Spring thread cleaning [Purp]
— Open Blogger

Fresh, clean, new, now with 50% more lilac smell.

I don't know who torched the oil wells in Syria, but that's usually a sign of desperation. Somebody is on the ropes...

Apple denied trademark for iPad Mini. Might be a kindness...this is a product searching for a market. Too big to be conveniently pocketable, like a phone, but with all the well known usability issues of normal sized tablets magnified by its diminutive stature. Why would anyone buy one, unless... ah... ummm... because its Apple and will impress my friends?

15 Over the last 13 years, the stock market has twice crashed and touched off a recession: American households lost $5 trillion in the 2000 dot-com bust and more than $7 trillion in the 2007 housing crash. Sooner or later — within a few years, I predict — this latest Wall Street bubble, inflated by an egregious flood of phony money from the Federal Reserve rather than real economic gains, will explode, too. Since the S.&P. 500 first reached its current level, in March 2000, the mad money printers at the Federal Reserve have expanded their balance sheet sixfold (to $3.2 trillion from $500 billion). Yet during that stretch, economic output has grown by an average of 1.7 percent a year (the slowest since the Civil War); real business investment has crawled forward at only 0.8 percent per year; and the payroll job count has crept up at a negligible 0.1 percent annually. Real median family income growth has dropped 8 percent, and the number of full-time middle class jobs, 6 percent. The real net worth of the “bottom” 90 percent has dropped by one-fourth. The number of food stamp and disability aid recipients has more than doubled, to 59 million, about one in five Americans.

19 Speaking of Syria: Listening in? The UK's Sunday Times newspaper exposed what it claims are new details on what Syria states are "Israeli espionage measures" planted on Ant Island – a tiny island opposite Syria's Tartus Port. According to the report on Sunday, divers from 'Shayetet 13', Israel’s elite naval commando unit installed the equipment. They approached the island from one of the country’s German-built Dolphin class submarines, which are armed with nuclear cruise missiles. Related stories: Syria TV shows 'Israeli spy gear' Israel warns it can't 'stand idle' as Syria war spills over Syrian tank shell lands in Golan Heights In early March, Al-Manar, a pro-Syrian Hezbollah affiliated television station in Lebanon, reported that the “rocks” could track and film Russian warship movements and instantly transmit pictures back to Israel by satellite. Glad someone is watching since obama seems more concerned with calling Republicans bad names.

61 I wanted an iPad Mini before the iPad came out. The iPod was very useful (I wasn’t willing to get an iPhone until the monthly service charges went way down; I bought a used Blackberry and used it without a data connection just to be able to sync contacts to my computer and use bluetooth in my car) but too small for some things like SSH or blogging via web browser. I bought the iPad 2 when my 2001 laptop finally started not being fast enough and I realized that for what I did on it, an iPad would be much easier to carry around. I bring a standard wireless keyboard with me while traveling and when I need to write a lot (you know, movie reviews, thought not on the epic scale as others who shall not be named) set the iPad on a stand. And when the boss needs me to fix a server remotely, I can ssh in from just about anywhere. Wouldn’t know what to do with an iPad Mini now, but having once wanted something of that size, I can see the use for it. BTW, what does the 'i' in iPad, iPod, iPhone, etc stand for? Not sure the “i” really stands for anything any more. When it first was used on the iMac, it stood for Internet.

As a soldier’s soldier, I think he understood that Joyeuse's efforts on behalf of our country were emblematic of an entire generation's sacrifices, and that the OSS spy was a symbol for his fellow WWII veterans, now in their twilight. The general acknowledged that recognizing this hero was the right thing to do. The United States is honoring Joyeuse for his selfless contributions on behalf of our country. At 3 pm on Good Friday, March 28, 2013, Rene Joyeuse’s sons and his wife, Suzanne, will see the fulfillment of his final wish: months before he died, Rene told his sons, "I will be buried at Arlington."

So my predictions for the season finale of The Walking Dead tonight.  Skip if you don't want my precognitive potential Spoilers based on other stuff.

The Governor's nerdy minion will try to stop him, and be beaten and mortally wounded.  But before he dies will tell Tyrese's group where to find annoying blonde chick.  They release her.  One of Tyrese's group will die by the end and he will end up joining Rick's group.  Annoying blonde gets to be the one to kill the Governor.  The prison winds up wrecked too much to be safe and so Rick's group has to leave it and move on.

78 The main market for the iPad Mini is education.  It costs 2/3 of an iPad.  That means a school can buy 3 for the price of 2 iPads.  With tight budgets and the desire to get more devices into the hands of students, it has a place.  The Chromebook gives it some competition, but the Mini has an edge in apps.  Also, the Mini doesn't require constant connectivity to make it effective.  The Chromebook is more or less a device designed to connect to the internet to take advantage of Google's services.  It can do more but is best used online.

I think OPEC will pretty much break themselves before too long.  This little skirmish in Syria is just the run-up to a bigger war between Iran and the  reactionary/traditionial Sunni Gulf states.

Nukes will ultimately be involved, and I'll bet a lot of oilfield infrastructure will be wrecked.    These guys just cannot stand the prosperity.  I look for the Russians and the Chinese to come in later and sort it all out, and come to control the oil fields themselves, since we are now so loathe to get into any "foreign entanglements".

And then there is the latest bit of news:  Australia and China will now have direct interchange of currency in trading,  and no longer use US dollars in the exchanges.  The days of the US being the world's reserve currency are now numbered.

184 Congrats! Make sure whatever school they go to, it isn't a den of left-liberal liberal-arts brainwashing. Well, that leaves Georgetown out then.

Pray they both go to UVA?

They have told us in no uncertain terms they are NOT going to the same school. The one who got into Tech and Tulane prefers Tulane, then Tech, over U Va.

Stevo 162: We're in the Peoples Republic of Alexandria. Georgetown (five miles away) would save us a bundle on travel costs, but I'd prefer the instate tuition.

Posted by: Jim in Virginia at March 31, 2013 09:53 PM (xKel7) As a twin, I understand the desire to go to two different places because we had to deal with the "Oh, you're so-and-so's sister." I'm in Alexandria too, so I both feel your pain and your desire to make them both happy. Seriously, if they want to go separate places, it's probably better if they do.

192 One kid is hard science / biology/  pre med or pre law. (The basketball game this afternoon is making her rethink premed.) The other is set on a public health career, which makes Tulane a good choice. (Plus the fact that we'd have to visit New Orleans two or three times a year. )

Posted by: I lurk, therefore I am, twin at March 31, 2013 09:56 PM (A/F7b) I say this because my twin and I were academically different: People would ask her if she was the "smart twin". My sister did better in certain academic areas than me, but people still held the stereotype. We went to separate post-secondary institutions and she excelled. If that's anywhere near the case in your situation, let them go to different schools.

Posted by: I lurk, therefore I am, twin at March 31, 2013 05:02 PM (A/F7b)

195 Jim in VA, those are all good schools. Having just had my three kids graduate (a singleton 16 months older than his twin sister), if they go the private college route, be prepared to need a lot more than $200K. If we had had to do it over, all of our kids would have gone to one of the fine state system schools in VA. Your daughters must be very smart and talented, those are some competitive schools for admission. If you are on Twitter, contact me there for some inside info on Charlottesville.

OK 'rons, shameless bragging. The twin daughters have heard back on all their college applications. One got into U VA, Virginia Tech and Tulane. The other got into U VA also; yesterday she got her admission letter to Georgetown.

Anyone have a spare $200K I can borrow?

Tech is less smug than UVA and better for engineering. I'm biased because I went there. Do not know about Tulane. Tech is probably cheapest of the bunch, but not as good for liberal arts.

213 I personally won't buy anything Apple due to a longstanding grudge but it would be madness on Apple's part to completely ignore the growth in the 7"-ish category and leave it all to Google. Give up ownership of a category to somebody else and it becomes a foot in the door for the other categories.

The smaller form factor works better for a lot of tasks and is more portable. A gaming tablet with a controller dock (a U-shaped frame that adds buttons and analog directional inputs) using that form factor would still be small enough to be reasonably portable and off a much bigger screen and range of software than the dedicated portable game systems from Sony and Nintendo.

A story that got oft reported this week was that Microsoft has relaxed the minimum display requirements for Win8 and RT to allow for smaller devices. You lose some features like the snap view of multiple apps, though that will probably come back as they extend the feature to allow for more configurations in a pending update. By the time anyone is ready to ship a 7" Win tablet the update will likely be the shipping standard, so scarcely anyone will ever know about the feature restriction for smaller screens.

If Microsoft wanted to have a Xbox portable that would also be the SmartGlass reference platform, a 7" Win RT table with controller dock would be a good way to go. Something like a Tegra 4 could possibly even muster emulation of the original Xbox and have access to that library in addition to newer stuff developed for the WinRT platform. Not a huge selling point but something to distinguish the platform. Given a 720p or better screen, they could also enable the Xbox 360 to act as a game server to allow use of that library, similar to what Nintendo does with the minimal processing in the Wii U controller, which is a thin client connecting to a terminal server.

216 Curse you, spammer, for killing this thread, but: A 7" tablet is too large for men's pockets. Most "nice" women's clothes either have no pockets at all, or pockets muuuuuuch too small for an iPhone. But women carry purses, and I lurve having a tablet that fits in mine.
