Some Food For Thought On Benghazi
— JohnE.

Days from the start of the Iraq War until the fall of Baghdad: 21 Days.

Days from the Benghazi terrorist attack to securing the site: 17 Days and counting.

This is absolutely absurd. Explain to me how the situation on the ground is safe enough for a CNN reporter but not safe enough for an FBI investigation team? Is it the Goldilocks of dangerousness? Too dangerous for some but not too dangerous for others?

Furthermore, why is the Administration admitting that this is terrorism treated as some sort of endgame? Congratulations, you admitted the obvious. Now, what the hell are you going to do about it.

I sure as hell wouldn't want to send anyone into that. The damn site is a flipping mess by now anyways. Let the Libyan government do some clean up for awhile--which it looks like they are doing. I do as well. The speed with which it was turned into a call for suppression of free speech seemed too fast to me. On the other hand, it requires an actual conspiracy for it to *not* have been organic, and I don't think I'm ready to go there. And yet, how did Scoamf even know about a video  practically  no one had seen yet in order to blame it?

31 Have the sandstorms started already? I guess the Maghreb weather patterns are hard to predict. This is from 21st January 2009-video. Air support would be zero, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eozg_SXfqy0 Here's some history- Lady Be Good was an American B-24D Liberator, AAF serial number 41-24301, which flew for the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. Based at Soluch Field[1][note 1] in Soluch (today Suluq and Benina International Airport, Libya) as part of the 514th Bomb Squadron, 376th Bomb Group, it failed to return from an April 4, 1943 bombing raid on Naples, Italy. At the time, the plane was assumed to have crashed into the Mediterranean Sea and its nine crew members were classified as Missing in Action. In 1958 the nearly intact Lady Be Good was discovered 710 km (440 miles) inland. Subsequent searches uncovered the remains of all but one of the crew. [...] The crew took off from Soluch Field shortly after 3 pm., one of the last to depart. High winds and obscured visibility prevented it from joining the main formation of bombers, and it continued the mission on its own. Their mission was the second part of a two-part, two-flight raid on the harbor of Naples, with a flight of 13 B-24s.[2] Nine B-24s returned to base because of the sandstorm, and four aircraft continued on.

73 Don't miss the main point: all the regime's actions since the death-- not the kidnapping, which the brave Navy SEALs prevented-- of our ambassagor in Benghazi have been part of an effort to conceal they set the deal up. They give the blind sheikh back in return for a radicalized ummah (= encirclement of the "little Shaitan"). It never was merely a 'crime' scene, and it surely isn't now that people have been trampling all over it for going on three weeks.  They went for the wrong letters: needed CIA, NSA, NRO, all that stuff, and USMC, not FBI.

I understand wanting to keep a light footprint because it might upset the Libyans to see US troops.  Islam hates it when soldiers show up on 'Muslim land.'  Wanting to, but not actually doing it when lives are at stake.

To simply make "no assessment," get waivers of usual security, to ignore warnings, the date being 9/11, MSM reporting from Benghazi, State Dept travel warnings even.  Amazing.  Hard to avoid malice at some level.   And a huge cover up using the First Amendment as the scapegoat.

79 From a Drudge link, we have this:

ST. LOUIS • A St. Louis teen who authorities say is a member of a gang called the "Obama Boyz" has been charged with two shootings on Saturday.

Anthony Jamal Lee, 18, fired at a group of people from the window of a Grand Prix at 2:17 p.m., according to charges. A 13-year-old boy was struck in the side of his body and had to be hospitalized; a 17-year-old boy was grazed by bullets on his face and arm.

So I need some input from that Atlantic writer -- is this racist too? True, it's no Obama Phone, but it IS a documented St. Louis gang name.

82 John Patrick O'Neill (February 6, 1952 – September 11, 2001) was an American counter-terrorism expert, who worked as a special agent and eventually a Special Agent in Charge in the Federal Bureau of Investigation until late 2001. In 1995, O'Neill began to intensely study the roots of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing after he assisted in the capture of Ramzi Yousef, who was the leader of that plot. He subsequently learned of al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, and investigated the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia and the 2000 USS Cole bombing in Yemen. Partly due to personal friction he had within the FBI and federal government, O'Neill was pushed out of the Bureau in 2001. He became the head of security at the World Trade Center, where he died at age 49 in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

He was the lead expert in the FBI and he died in the World Trade Center on 9/11 Yea, I can't remember her name either. I can't remember the book I read on the intelligence gathering leading up to 9/11 either right now (The Looming Tower maybe, even if it wasn't that one it is an outstanding read) but it was unbelievable. Anyone who reads that will stop believing Bubba is just a good ole boy and realize how culpable he is for how screwed we are in the middle east. Some middle east expert said that losing Libya was like having our eyes poked out on middle east intelligence, it was that important a terrorist outpost. Obama knew this was terrorism from the jump.

88 O'Neill was pleased to be assigned as commander of the FBI's investigation into the USS Cole bombing in October 2000. However, upon arriving in Yemen, he complained about inadequate security. As his team investigated, O'Neill came into conflict with Barbara Bodine, the U.S. ambassador to Yemen. The two had widely divergent views on how to handle searches of Yemeni property and interviews with citizens and government officials, and they only grew further apart as time progressed. After a month in Yemen, O'Neill returned to New York. He hoped to return to Yemen to continue the investigation, but was blocked by Bodine and others. He continued to investigate the Cole bombing, but eventually decided that the FBI investigation in Yemen must be pulled out due to inadequate security

These agencies were the direct result of the 9/11 commission recommendations to prevent further attacks.

The 9/11 attacks were the result of the wall of separation erected by Jaime Gorelick between the FBI and CIA, she was coincidently on the 9/11 commission, her primary role was to mitigate any blame of Clinton for intelligence shortcomings. Also remember, this was when Sandy Burger was actively destroying Clinton era memorandum that was being housed in the national archives.

And if an American citizen, particularly an official is killed overseas, FBI has the discretion to investigate. FBI was sent to the USsCole, Khobar, etc, to ensure that any evidence obtained was legal to use in court, should suspects be apprehended and extradited . They are usually on the ground within 48 hours of a major incident, so the fact the no one has shown up 15 days later is very telling.

Maybe Romney knows what to do, and he'll use the stage of the debates as his grand stage for the attack he needs to make. So desperately needs to make. I have said in an earlier post that the MFM debate mods will completely neuter this by refusing to say a word about anything relating to foreign policy in the debates. I'll bet they would like to try. But they cannot do this. The elephant is too big for the room. Wouldn't we all be bowled fucking over if Mitt Romney gave the performance of his life in Debate 1, by using any whisper of the foreign policy issue, any tiny whisper, as his cue to launch into a prepared riff of sixty seconds or less that would clearly and cleanly pin the label LIAR on Obama, and follow it by a blistering statement of just how godawful UNSAFE he has made the world for us.

168 Anybody remember the movie "Wag the Dog"? Didn't they pretend there was a war so that people would vote for the incumbent? Maybe O just couldn't figure out how to fake it in the internet age, so he has hil starting something? I know crazy, paranoid, conspiracy theory of an idea. I will go back to watching xfiles reruns now.

This will suit them fine. Hillary will be protected, so Bubba doesn't torpedo JEF and Rice simply enters the government/media/lobbying/college revolving door. It'll be like the one designated victim from Fast and Furious.

Fri.night and it has HIT THE FAN on the i-net. This Benghazi thing is BIG.

O will have to be trying to get out of the debate-- Romney has the chance to take him  out of the running  -- as long as he doesn't say what a fine fellow

his is and "just meant well".

I'm thinking Soros is hiding under his (own) bed about now.

Those that talk about "Faux News" better start listening now!

174 I expected Obama to be lousy at the job, he had no experience or training and no temprement to do it. I though Hillary would be better at foreign policy though. Good lord she's awful at this, and she surrounded herself with hapless ideologues. I've worked for a lousy female boss who hired on all her cronies and basically dominated the entire business before. It really, really sucked. Men got no promotions, knew nothing, couldn't get anything right, and were always to blame when the boss and her BFFs screwed up.

178 willow- Rice and Obama go way back. They are closer than Holder. She's not going anywhere 6 weeks before the election and even if she did it would reflect on Obama. And nobody is going to believe that she went on multiple Sunday shows to repeat the same lie that her boss supposedly knew before her. She works for Obama. There is no way on earth a Un Secretary has or should have a better brief on security than the President. Obama is in a lose lose situation. If the media continues to hound this its going to cost him points everywhere and but him back on defense.

Jackstraw, I hope it rolls right to the top as we all hope, But we have seen Obama throw anyone even his grandmother under the bus to get where he wants to go.

188 On August 7th, 1998, the US Embassies in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi were attacked by Egyptian Islamic Jihad, forerunner to Al Qaeda.

Thirteen days later, President Clinton had some 75 cruise missiles launched, attacking camps in Afghanistan and a pharmaceutical facility in Sudan.

Yeah, people snark that Clinton hit a bunch of empty tents and an aspirin factory.  The point is he had the balls to respond and defend the United States from her enemies.

Eighteen days of Obama lies and counting ....

189 "I want to know how Obama knew about that video so soon, and why he continued that narrative for so long."

I have no doubt Obama knew about the video on September 9th (or the 10th at the latest) when the Grand Mufti of Egypt condemned the video publicly and the Mufti's statements were carried on Egyptian television.  I'm sure the Embassy noted it and I'm also sure the Embassy reported it to Washington.

As for why he continued the narrative this long, I haven't foggiest idea.

190 Love it. Ace of Spades bloggers doing the work the media ignores.

The Goldilocks FBI. I hope they bring lots of money to give to them (Hillary and Barry's idea of Middle Eastern diplomacy...see Drudge and how we are throwing millions to Egypt and Syria in thanks for their rioting, murder and mayhem).

Thought Brett B said the video was shown on Egyptian TV prior to the Cairo demonstration, but I had never heard that before.  I had also never heard that the Grand Muffer of Egypt condemned the video on Egyptian TV.

In any event, I think this is another progressive action designed to convince us that we need to give up just a little of the First Amendment's protection so that we can have "peace in our time".  We will never get that 1A right back if they succeed, as they appear to be doing!.

Yeah, they showed bits of it. It was in the newspaper, too.  So was the Mufti's condemnnation.   Garance Franke-Ruta at The Atlantic wrote about this in her timeline the morning after it happened. On 9/12.  I'd been harping on this since reading about it that day.

Here's her timeline: http://tinyurl.com/9ob29x2

I've also been harping on why Anne Patterson, our Ambassador to Cairo, has been conspicuously out of the picture in all this.  Her embassy must have known about the Mufti's condemnation and had to have reported it to Washington if anyone there is worth a plugged nickle for doing their job.  In fact she was in Washington at the time.  I wonder why and when she left Cairo.

196 I don't even know why the FIB is involved.  It's too late to learn much from the site, and we already know the answer, as to who did it.  Foreign Intelligence is not under FIB's purview.

Did we send the FIB to Pearl Harbor to take bomb fragment samples back to Washington?
