So People Are Putting Butter In Their Coffee Now
— Ace

I think the idea was promoted by "The Bulletproof Executive," a health guru.

Supposedly grass-fed butter (and not the usual cheaper sort of butter) helps you burn fat all day, and helps your brain, because it has oils in it that promotes brain functions.

I do this on occasion when I forget to buy cream. It's surprisingly... good. It actually tastes a lot like cream (which is understandable, as it's basically the same thing), except there is film of butter at the top of the coffee, which gives it a slippery sort of feel.

But it's not slimy or anything. Just a little different in the texture of the aftertaste.

Just thought I'd share. It's pretty convenient just to keep a big bar of this in the fridge for when you run out of cream.

Oh, and then there's the miracle berry.

Apparently the berry contains a protein which is almost as sweet as sugar.

Anyone interested in cutting carbs can see the value of that -- a healthy protein which can be used as a sweetener.

Miraculin was discovered 50 years ago. It's only being seriously developed as a sweetener now.

Why?

Why, Government Corruption, of course.

As a chef and entrepreneur, Homaro Cantu has a reputation for an avant-garde approach to gastronomy. He believes the answer to one day eliminating sugar from our diets lies in a protein known as miraculin which was first discovered almost 50 years ago. Miraculin is a taste-modifier, one of only a handful of such naturally-occurring molecules in the world. It is found in the berries of a plant known as Synsepalum dulcificum or, colloquially, the “miracle fruit,” which grows in parts of West Africa.

...

The idea of introducing the miracle berry into food as a sugar replacement was actually first conceived almost 50 years ago by an entrepreneur called Robert Harvey who began to create a range of sugar-free products coated with the berry extract. Initially, his company Miralin appeared destined for instant success. In a poll in which schoolchildren were asked to choose between a sugary food and one of Harvey’s new treats, they voted overwhelmingly in favor of the latter.

However, things were about to change rapidly. The sequence of events which ensued would not look out of place in a Hollywood film. Harvey began to suspect that he was being followed on the way home from work; then one night in the summer of 1974, he reported that his office had been raided and his files stolen.

Shortly afterwards, the previously supportive Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared that miraculin was an additive, meaning that the berries could not be sold as a sugar substitute without further testing. Harvey suspected foul play. He suggested that the FDA had been pressured by the powerful manufacturers of sugar and artificial sweeteners, keen to quash this new challenge to their business, something both parties denied.

“For the FDA to overturn the ruling, as far as I understand it, would require years of testing and a large amount of money, which it was not possible for Harvey to raise in the poor economic climate of 1974,” explains Canadian author Adam Gollner, who chronicled Harvey’s story in his book, The Fruit Hunters.

...

As the FDA ruling stands, it is possible for the berry to be distributed to customers in restaurants and coffee shops but any food product containing it would only able to be marketed and sold outside the United States.

The big problem with miraculin powder as a general substitute for sugar is that it breaks up, denatures, when it's cooked -- so you can't use it in donuts or cookies.

39 "25 >>>Count me as officially lost. What else would you feed cows? ' Most cows are started on grass and then "finished" on various grains, mostly soy and corn. I don't know how that process goes exactly for dairy cows, but I would assume that instead of "finishing" them on grain it's more of a supplementary thing for their entire lives.

Butter is the butterfat separated from the whey in cream. Some of it (European style) is cultured cream first (enzymes sour the cream a little before churning).

108 "And what is "cold-brew coffee"?" Just what it sounds like. You brew the coffee with cold (well, room temp) water instead of hot water. You can do it with a special gadget but it works almost as well with a french press. Just poor in the ground coffee and then fill the press up with water. Stir in the grounds, and then cover with plastic wrap for 24 hours. Then press it and pour it into some sort of container. Then you use the coffee as a concentrate. You can do it hot or cold 1 part coffee to 2 parts hot water if you want it hot, or 1 part coffee and 1 part water over ice if you want it cold. It's smoother tasting and less acidic than hot brewed coffee.

167 Cattle loose in a pasture are still not 'free-range.' given that it my take 20-50 acres to support a cow/calf pair in a lot of cattle country, they are fed daily or twice daily... usually silage, old hay, misc. grain mixes, hobos, and as noted above, smaller weaker 'downers' who are ground up for protein... leading to prion transmission and CJD (theoretically). Corn prices are through the roof courtesy the ethanol fiasco, so everything from stale bagels to flood damaged candy has been tossed in the feed bunks... True grass fed beef is scarce and expensive. Eating weeds in a pasture is not grass fed.

ONLY grass fed butter. Last I checked, cows only eat grass. That's why when most people normally see a cow it's standing around in a grass covered pasture, eating grass. Or hay, which is dried grass.

Then there's the coffee which only Bulletproof Executive sells because it happens to only be grown on a single plantation in an unnamed Central American country.

Your friends were making 'sweet creamery butter' if they were making it from the cream.

Regular Grade A butter is made from the butterfat that is removed from milk...resulting in low-fat milk.

What a load. But I'm still going to try the butter coffee thing. I'm on the paleo diet (no cream or milk). I do about 200-300 push ups a day, 300-600 flutter kicks, just whatever. Not all at once. 50 here, 50 there. Miss some days; point being when you eat? it's mass. Sesame street: mass = energy, so do work and burn those joules. it's just freaking physics. You body is a closed system, essentially. If you want to lose weight, eat less, move around more. It's really that simple. I was a 225lb fatty at one point. Got my CC permit photo taken. Took one look and went: "holy crap on a cracker that guy is FAT!" 175 now. Fighting weight.    Only punch I know of with that short travel is to make a fist with the thumb extended and jab the solar plexus with it.

Takes the wind away, the continuation is resting the knuckles against the stomach and bringing the hand up sharply with the thumb still extended.

It winds up under the jaw in the soft part--and the opponent loses any further interest in fighting.

358 Lot of WWE in the martial arts world. So, so much! Ever watch an Aikido demonstration? Guys running willy-nilly at a "master", and being flung away just as fast. For clarity, Aikido DOES work. Some of those guys can grab you just right and put all sorts of compliance holds or redirect your energy. But that crap where the student gets flicked away like a fly only works because the student is almost running PAST the teacher, and only halfheartedly reaching at him. Either a straight on tackle, step up and punch like a boxer, or the serial-killer preferred swarm attack would be more representative of a real attack.

373 The one inch punch is not real.

Yes, it is real. It can be demonstrated. You can knock people down with it. The problem with it is obvious. In order to use it you have to get within an inch of somebody without encountering a whole bunch of other longer range techniques from the other person - all of which also work and can be demonstrated.

The one inch punch is much like the old saw about capturing a bird by sprinkling salt on its tail.

388 WWE stock tripled in the past year on hype, then went back to the old price when the WWE Network subscriber #s came in less than hoped and the new TV deal was for less than hoped. WWE reported 670k subscribers and analysts were hoping for around 1M. And their new deal with NBC was for an 80% increase, and not the 100-200% increase analysts had expected. The TV rights deal was the big disappointment. Still, the WWE Network is doing well as a brand new venutre, just not as good as hoped. And their TV revenues will almost double -- but not increase nearly as much as they'd projected. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

389 The one inch punch is not real. >>>Yes, it is real. It can be demonstrated. You can knock people down with it. I saw the famous one inch punch demo on video and there are some problems with it. 1. The puncher is at a specific very short range to the punchee. 2. The puncher is very careful to set up at one inch, then when he loads up he gets another couple of inches. 3. There is a chair behind the punchee, and in part he only gets knocked down because he stumbles over it. 4. Who knows if the punchee played it up a little bit.

401 I put coconut oil, GF butter, and organic, free-range, artisanally pulverized Peruvian cocoa powder in my coffee these days and I hope it helps. It seems right. The drawback is that I can't really taste the nuances of my coffee with the cocoa powder in the mix. I can't even distinguish Viennese roast from Italian. But seriously, it does extend the suppression of appetite compared to cream only.

461 I hate to do this. No shit. This morale patch thing is not with Ace's stamp of approval. I contacted him and he said he wasn't ready to go down the road yet, so I removed any reference to the site from the patch. However. I'm sold out. Called my patch monkey and they're going to run another batch for me. The next run, the skull and crossed swords will be black. I *think* I've filled all the orders and have sold the entire first run. And look, I'm not going to retire on this $$. I sell them pretty much at cost + shipping. Going to order 50 more. First run folks do get a bonus IDF patch designed by me and Uri. Uri is a hoot.

464 Stealth conservatarian comment ninja "aperson" strikes again! On an article at a local news site about an "urban farm tour" in which progressives visit a bunch of hipster houses with big yards all over Oakland and Berkeley where they create mini-farms in the city -- because growing your own food means you have a lower carbon footprint and thus you stop Global Warming!! -- "aperson" had this to say (starting with a quote from the article): http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_25853767/urban-farm-tour-features-four-berkeley-home-scale " aperson 6 minutes ago "K. Ruby Blume, believes urban farming makes a lot of sense, not only to raise healthy food for one's family and beyond, but also to learn to conserve natural resources and reduce the carbon footprint." I'm just sitting here laughing and laughing. How does K. Ruby Blume and everyone else involved in this event expect the visitors to get to each farm, scattered as they are all over the East Bay? That's right, the only way to do this "tour" is via automobile. The amount of "carbon footprint" created just by the farm tour on this one day is greater than whatever amount she thinks she's saving for the other 364 days of the year combined. Hey, I grow vegetables in my garden too, but please, people, stop it with the "carbon footprint" and "climate change" mishigass already. Hypocrisy is embarrassing to watch. Either live up to your words and cease using the products of civilization, or just shut up about how evil that civilization is."

what is this about a patch?

Posted by: chemjeff at May 30, 2014 04:29 PM (9GG/0)

500 I saw the famous one inch punch demo on video and there are some problems with it.

We experimented with it in the dojo back in the late 80's. It is not what it looks like; if you concentrate on the punch from that range it will never work. However, if you understand the physics behind it there is nothing mysterious going on. I've been knocked down by it and knocked people down with it -its not magic, just simple physics.
