Should Conservative Women Just Embrace the Term "Feminism"?
— Ace

And men, for that matter.

So long as we mean by "feminist" what I think 85% of the country means by it.

9 Never liked the word "feminist," myself. But, I kinda like the urban dictionary definition: A person who supports equality between the sexes. Feminists can be (and are) women, men, and transpeople. Feminists are black, white, and everything in between. Feminists are straight, gay, and bisexual. Feminists understand that inequality effects everyone. Feminists ARE NOT Nazis, or women who can't get laid. The very existence of these views is proof that feminism still has a lot of work to do. Some feminists shave, and some don't. Some are "fashionable", some aren't. Just like any other group of people. Not all feminists are lesbians, though lesbians can be feminists. The ongoing Civil Rights movement and the push for gay marriage are often associated with feminism as each cause expresses a very sane desire to create world recognition of our intrinsic equality. John: Lisa's a feminist? You mean a bitch, right? Max: She just believes in equal rights, man. I'm a feminist, too.

53 It doesn't no good to wage this pissing war over the meaning of the word imho. Let them have the words feminism. Define it as women dancing around in hoo-ha costumes and demanding free contraception at the same time they're simultaneously telling you to get their laws off their bodies. Take the word and shame it. Give it the meaning it deserves.

54 Ok.. to be serious.. nope.  we shouldn't.

Look at the VAWA debacle happening in Congress.  First off.. we never needed a Violence Against Women Act in the first place.  we got so many fucking special groups now it's fucking ridiculous.  A crime is a crime.. once you make it more of a crime if it's against some special protected group, we no longer have equality.

So now, the freakin' libtards want to add LGBT  (which means any freak who has a grudge against someone even looking at them wrong can claim "abuse" and that includes transgender MEN - in a violence against WOMEN bill!) to the bill.. and Indians too!

So.. to me, this shit's gotta stop.

That's the problem.  First off, Feminism never meant that.  It was always a "rebellion against the patriarchy."  In the early days, if you were a male who agreed that women deserved equal political rights, you were on the side of the Feminists, but no one would ever have called you a Feminist.

Now, though, "Feminism" hides behind that nice rosy perception while Feminists (as a rule) are actually for anything but "equal treatment."  They want special consideration and privileges.

Posted by: Serious Cat at February 27, 2013 11:10 AM (UypUQ)

75 No! Feminism has been associated with women who want us to see ourselves as career victims. Back in the seventies I had a friend who was always talking about how we needed the Equal Rights Amendment. I told her we didn't need it because a woman who was discriminated against, based on gender, was already protected by law and could try to prove her case in court. Her response: "It'll send a message. " You want to know why so-called moderate women voted for Obama? Because they buy the liberal bs that they get 24/7 from almost the entire media, that women somehow have it tougher than men. It's bullshit, but they believe it because it is promoted in all the news shows except Fox News, and in all of the entertainment media. Republicans and conservative women calling themselves feminists won't accomplish anything. Liberals will still control the message through the media.

102 There's a reason why there are references to different waves of feminism. Look, if you were to look at my life, I would be considered an alpha feminist. I do not consider myself a feminist at all because third wave feminism, which is nothing but a truly pathetic and bastardized form of Victorian mores, is what is currently deemed the One True Feminist way. I don't want to be associated with that in any way. I'm torn on this. I do believe in taking back the language and I do believe in taking back terms. It's simply that I'm exhausted from fighting for years and years and years about this very subject. I guess my gut response is good luck with that.

I can't even agree to that because some laws cannot be justly and equally applied to both men and women because again,  men and women are different.

Posted by: polynikes at February 27, 2013 11:15 AM (m2CN7)

115 No. I am a woman but I am no feminist. The thing is, even though people spout the crap about feminism just means you're for equality, in practice that is not the case. Yes, men and women should be treated equally under the law. No, men and women are not identical (I would argue we are complementary). And the feminist movement seems to always be pushing this crap that men and women are identical (but, wink wink, women are really superior) and that is just biologically incorrect. And it sets people of both sexes up for miserable failure when we expect women and men to behave identically or be capable of identical things. So, in a nutshell, I am not a feminist. I am all for being a don't-mistreat-people-because-of-their-sex-ist. Or, in short form, a decent human being.

I want nothing to do with women who dress up as vaginas and demand free birth control, abortions, and transgendered people in the military, or who care more about women being admitted into exclusive golf clubs than real abuse that's happening to women such as child brides, female genital mutilation, stonings for adultery, and honor killings.

Women's values and beliefs are just as important as men's; What are "womens' values and beliefs" and how do they different from men's in a way that matters? 3. Women have, or ought to have, ambitions equal to men. Meaning what? As many women should want to be engineers as women? As many men should want to be homemakers as women? I'm all in favor of saying 'Sure, we're feminists' and coming up with what we mean by feminism. The 85% of the country has a loose idea at best of what they mean. 148 beach party, Feminists don't believe in equal treatment. They want special treatment. Women are under represented as engineers? We need special programs to get women into engineering. Women statistically make less per year than men? We need to ignore the fact that women spend fewer hours per week on the job, and take time out from their careers for child rearing. Women make a choice to work for a religion that opposes contraception and, therefore, offer insurance that doesn't cover contraceptives? We need an executive order forcing said religion's insurance to provide free contraceptives. Not equal treatment, special treatment. I'm not a victim, I don't need special treatment, and I don't want to be associated with feminism.

Now, though, "Feminism" hides behind that nice rosy perception while Feminists (as a rule) are actually for anything but "equal treatment." They want special consideration and privileges. 162 In my experience (insert warning about anecdotes and data) most women who embrace the term Feminist are not actually about Equality, and Equal Rights, and Equal Pay For Equal Work.

They may say that's "All they want," but when you point out, "Okay... so in most cases you've got that.  You've even got special legal protections for them to boot."  They ALWAYS say, "But that's not enough."

I suspect that, if you made them face their dark, inner selves that they try so hard to repress, they would be just as much anti-man (again: still talking about the ones who claim to be feminists but also claim not to be "against men") as the Left wing Femo-Marxists.  The difference being they're ashamed to admit it, where the harridans on the left embrace it.

166 I've been under the impression myself that feminism is starting to take on a rather bad connotation. Maybe that's just me in my conservative world, but all the women I know don't seem to like to associate with this word. In a strictly libertarian sense I don't have a problem with it. In a social sense I do though. Feminism is responsible for creating a long list of mental disorders. This is something that is heavily studied now and professionals are pointing fingers at feminism. The fact is we are different biologically. Our bodies are different, our minds are different. Women have been encouraged and pressured to pursue things that frankly they aren't naturally inclined to... and as a result things like depression and anxiety are on the rise big time. It's like that line from Jurassic Park... "so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should. "

Let's teach more of this vapid "equal" BS to our kids so that they can maintain the Disney illusion of a magical , free land , populated by unicorns and friendly dinosaurs and doctors who only accept " for smiles and love" for their work.

Lacey no he is not not really.

Lacey, *I* am a "feminist."

My wife was making more money than me the first time her contract came up and we had a 7 month old baby.  My "man card balls" told me to get her out and try to get back on at my airline, but she blinked and she was right later that year my airline died.  I have been dutiful hearth stoker for my soldier for 13 more years....

I do look forward to going out and being primary earner again, but my duty to my family required gender neutrality in our analysis.

If "feminism" is female "equality" then yes like "racial equality" I am for it....

hell I have always been for it.

If the best man for a job is a woman hire her, black yellow red white....

223 Sorry in advance for the long read. (and about posting it on the wrong thread earlier). Oops. The Democrats, Obama and blue states don't want to empower women. If you want to empower women, buy them a pistol/ammo , teach them how to accurately and safely shoot it , then help them get a CHL. My wife took her CHL (Concealed handgun license) class , written test and shooting qualification yesterday. She passed with flying colors. She is walking around here puffed up like a bantam rooster and is very happy. I am very proud of her too. The instructor told me she got a perfect score on the shooting practical (250 points out of 250 possible on the 50 shot timed test). He said she shoots better than he does. I told him I had her shooting at a 4 inch diameter spinner (about the size of a human heart) from 15 yards (max distance on the test) and after some practice she could hit it every time, so the trials at 3 and 7 yards and hitting that 8 ring or better were a piece of cake. Heck most of her shots were in the bullseye with a few in the 9 ring and 2 in the 8 ring. I also had her shooting 1 shot per second (twice as fast the test). She whined about it and didn't like it too much, but it sure made her a better shootist. He didn't like her 1 handed grip, but I told him "I trained her like that on purpose because next I was going to teach her how to shoot with a pistol in each hand, Texas gunslinger style (a double duelist, pistol packing mama)". He just laughed. The test is timed, you have to get off a series of 50 shots in so many seconds from 3 distances (3, 7 and 15 yards). Here is her target. 175 is the minimum passing score. They want you to shoot center of mass. That's just one example of Empowering women....She now has a murder, mugging and rape free zone that extends 15 yards in any direction around her. She doesn't have to be beholding to, or fear any man a putting hands on or abusing her. She is woman, hear her pistols roar! In my experience that's a lot more effective than the whistle, or Judo lessons Obama and the Democrats want women to have.

232 beach party, Feminists don't believe in equal treatment. Posted by: nerdygirl at February 27, 2013 04:22 PM (tAOpG) LOL, where did this rant come from? 240 As for the militant anti-abortionists on here, you can point out that Susan B. Anthony was vehemently against abortion and she was one of the earliest feminists. It's annoying hearing people talk about the "erosion" of the traditional family unit. If you believe in that, NO ONE is preventing that. Parents forget that they have the power to influence their kids by example. How many of us know conservatives who are divorced because of reasonable reasons like a cheating spouse? I know quite a few and its unreasonable to assume that every marriage must be preserved at all costs-this often makes life miserable for everyone. I'm glad that feminists made it so you can't smack a chicks ass at the office or can actually divorce if your spouse is a shitbag-although yes in many ways feminism has gone too far (Title VII cough cough). Still, feminists can be liberals or conservatives and aren't just whiny whores on their periods (ala Cartman) i.e. Wolff getting "offended" that Katy Perry joins the Marine Corps in one of her music videos. If the Left gets to subvert all our shit, why lets do the same to them. Make them defend and attempt to redefine the very words and concepts they assumed to be invulnerable. (Because really, trying to sell young people on being "anti feminist" is a sure fire way for disaster, but defining feminism along more conservative lines might actually work.)

Posted by: Danny at February 27, 2013 11:37 AM (YoqPl)

241 Feminist theory demeans and lessens women simply by its existence.  The notion that women have to be the same as men reinforces the idea that men are the preferable gender, and that women must mimic them in every way in order to be validated.  Feminist theory by its existence negates the inherent worth of females by saying they must conform to the image of males, take on their roles, their identity, their purpose.  Feminism by definition is anti-woman.

So it's nice we have equal rights now. I think that could be viewed as a kind of feminism. I don't think that feminism has to involve embracing man-hate. But that is what the connotation of the word is now, and I don't know if it's worth trying to reclaim the word.

248 **237 Because why would you willingly give away potential top employees or customers to your competitors? ** Maybe this was a problem 30 years ago or whatever, but now it's a punitive anti-male system that does, in the real world, force men out of positions of power. A lot of reverse discrimination out there, so to speak. So, what are we even talking about. Fems want to continue to punish men. This hurts american companies.

250 241 Feminist theory demeans and lessens women simply by its existence. Posted by: mama winger at February 27, 2013 04:37 PM (P6QsQ) ::STANDING OVATION:: Thank you, mama!

I  wonder  if  we are  fighting  the wrong  battles.   This  is  where  Bush  was  right and  Carson  is  right.  We need  to make  more  owners.   Owners are  better  than  renters,  in  general.  We  need  to  start  bribing  people  with  things.  The  dems  do  this, but  they  do it with  controls.   Maybe  we  should  give it to  people  without  controls,  or  with  fewer  controls.   I  don't  know  how  to  do  this.   I  think  it could  work  with  education  vouchers  (though  it  needs  to be packaged and  marketed  differently).   It  could  be  done by  maybe  offering  each  individual  a  gun.  We  have  totally  given  up  property  rights  in this country  because  too  few  now  have  any  property  worth  protecting.   What  if the  GOP  promised  another homestead  act  to   lower  income  people?  Just  some  rambling  thoughts.

I find that hard to beleive since the fems anti-male movement has made college a hostile place for men, but whatevers. discuss.

Yes, because physics doesn't matter.

Now, I'm not going to say about her because I don't know.  But I will say that in general a 6'2" 220 lb man in decent condition could absolutely overpower a (how tall is she?  5'10"?) 136 lb woman even in prime condition.  Especially if he gets the drop on her.  Especially if he doesn't hold himself to any rules.

Specific cases will be different, but in general this will be true.

Remember that a criminal isn't trying to knock you unconscious (necessarily) or win a certain number of points.  The criminal is trying to disable you long enough to do their business (theft, murder, rape, whatever) and get away.

But enter in the ring a guy with some cardio and skills and relevant weight class experience, all bets are off.

295 Interesting remarks and question. Certainly most of the country does not know the history of the feminist movement. Most only remember the initial idea which was equal access to jobs (doctor, lawyer, indian chief) and equal pay for the same job. Some also have the vague idea of it being related to "reproduction rights" or "sexual freedom". But a sizable group have picked up the idea that these people reealllly don't like males, tend to promote lesbianism as "the political litmus test" for being feminist and intend to end the traditional existence of "the family'. Yet, most people lack familiarity with the alien mindset found in their "research publications" or heard in academic presentations. Using the same term therefore carries mixed messages relating to the group who hears the word and therefore, could backfire. I'd try to develop alterative language that captures how must women see themselves: professionals, family managers, consumer decision makers, mothers, community leaders (I'd use organizers, but the democrats have hijacked that word-- but females have dominated volunteers service for decades)

I've  listened to quite a few women, young and old, who despair over the fact that there aren't any real men out there anymore.  And by  real men, I mean someone who vows to protect and provide for them, but mostly treat  and love  them as ladies.  So many women out there that actually want to be  treated as  a woman but can't find a man willing to do so.

The situation is very different now - more women have the income to support children on their own; their grandmothers and many of their mothers did not have careers. But initially when it became easier to get a divorce, there was a epidemic of middle-aged men dumping their long-time spouses and running off with the local librarian or whatever. Since many of these wives did not have an education or career, this create quite a social shockwave. Their daughters were taking notes while this went on. It gave the radical arm of the movement a club to swing, and they did so.

The supporters who forced that metamorphosis continue to pretend that "feminism" is about equality, but their words and actions betray their actual intent, which is female SUPERIORITY. They should be shamed into ignominious obscurity. The only place for poisoned words is the gutter.

318 It's great being a feminist. You get to work at a crap job all day, get taxed up the wazoo on the salary bc it's not enough less than your husband's income, then come home and pretend to manage a house that is completely out of control, pretend to cook overpriced frozen food, and farm out the raising of your kids to the school system/local daycare. then you get to bitch and whine about how exhausting it is "working two jobs". yay feminism!

I was married to a feminist.

Luckily, she never legally took my name so there was no name change after the divorce.

Feminism was rotten to the core from the beginning.

Feminism is a form of narcissism.

I'm anti-feminist to the maximum extent allowed by law.

A Marxist is someone who believes Marx's theories are superior to the alternatives.

An Islamist is someone who believes Islam is superior to the alternatives.

A feminist is... someone who believes the sexes are interchangeable? Yeah, that's it.
