Shock: After Careful Consideration and Dispassionate Review of the Evidence, Democrats Decide to Seek Lightest Possible Penalty for Good-Time Charlie Rangel
— Ace

Wow. Am I the only one blindsided by this?

The House ethics investigatory subcommittee recommended that Rep. Charlie Rangel be reprimanded, which is the least severe punishment, according to a new report.

The disclosure was made today by Rep. Gene Green (D-Texas), who is the panel's chairman.

A reprimand falls below expulsion and censure on the list of available punishments.

Note that there was talk of Rangel making a deal, but if the worst he can face (after trial in the House) is basically one step above a Formal Snubbing, I'd say the man might as well roll the dice, eh?

Except, of course, the Republicans who will control the House might not be willing to leave it at this level, should his case not be resolved by then.

And this matters to the self-centered, self-aggrandizing, lush-living, out of touch felons who fill those plush seats in Congress in what way?

If "approval" polls meant anything, not a friggin' one of those pigs would be anywhere near their opponents in pre-election polling, let alone leading as many are.

Face it: from the Traitor-in-Chief to the "delegates" from territories and D.C., these fat and sassy greedheads are sittin' pretty. They know an occasional loser like Traficant falls through the cracks, but the vast majority have a get-out-of-jail-free card. Nothing they say or do can be held against them, thanks to a complicit media and a distracted electorate.

I expect to see most retain their seats in November. Pelosi will still be the Big Cheese in the House.

Until the general public gets a clue, America's only royalty will continue to thrive. And steal, lie and cheat.

They are allowed to get away with every felony short of murder (ooops...I forgot Zombie Ted Kennedy for a moment) and, unless millions of Americans wake up and rise up, they'll always be the Chosen Few.

And we will continue the painful descent into serfdom.

There are 4. The Ethics committee is split, 4 Republicans, 4 Democrats. And the recommendation came from a sub-committee, and no, I have no idea what the partisan break down is of that.

Though, one of them probably did agree to it on the theory that A) none of the 4 Democrats would vote to expel Charlie B) with no 5 votes, no punishment and Charlie walks off scot free and C) maybe in Darth Cheney mode, they figure that if Charlie walks off easy, they get a talking point out of it.

Everyone was surprised the other day when the 4 Republicans held together and said no deal for Charlie because he had plenty of time to cut a deal before the 11th hour. If you recall, the internets were abuzz with how Rangle was going to cut a deal. So, it is really wait and see time.

Maybe democrats are finally entering into the 'acceptance' phase of the ass kicking they are going to take in November. They have gone past not caring to embracing, and encouraging defeat.

Or maybe....They are in stage bargaining, deliberately recommended something light, so that when they hit Charlie with both barrels they look like bad asses.

Or maybe.... They are bumbling fools splitting the difference, recommending the lightest punishment so when Charlie gets 'Censured' it will look if you squint hard quasi tough almost but not really. I personally love how this approach combines fake outrage with ineffective punishment while diminishing neither. But most people see reprimand and censure the same way a dictionary does...

Get in an accident at 3:00 AM while drunk? don't bother claiming you are performing "house business." and you will not get off with treatment - you are going to jail.

Get found with $50K of bribes in your freezer? The speaker is not going to defend your privilege and prevent a search of your office - yhou are going to jail.

Forget to pay taxes? jail.

If the R's make a statement, and sign a pledge, that this will no longer be tolerated no matter what party. They will a) remind people of all the corrupt D's, b) paint the D's as the party of corruption, which they are, and c) let people know that the R's finally get it.

There was a post here within the last couple of days that mentioned the "political class" in this country.  I commented that the thing that amazed me was the fact that we could even distinguish a political class in this country.

That is kind of the root of this problem.  The "political class" in this country see themselves so far above us now that they have become every bit the same type of elite class that the founding fathers took such exception to when they declared our independence.

I believe in my heart that same repudiation of a subservient existence may be the only thing that will save this country.

I mean really, one can see it in many of the representatives that we have and in many of those who seek to be our representatives.  They have not gotten the message.

They will not descend to being our servants again as it is supposed to be and I hope that we will not acquiesce to being their serfs, because that is how they see us.

More than anything else, this is what convinces me that all this shit can't be "reversed."  We're gonna see it continue until it crashes, and in 15-20 years, we're gonna have to rebuild it from the ground up.  It's what happens in mature Western countries after they crumble under their own weight-- witness Russia for example.

Up until a few years ago they were ALL rent controlled. They changed the law to allow landlords to start uping the rent but there are still strict controls on it.

These stupid laws are the reason NYC has the highest rent for the shittyist apartments in the country.

Hell what we down here would consider a walk-in closet is an apartment there with a murphy bed and a hot plate. If in a neighborhood without bullets going through the walls it rents for $1500/month.

Continuation of a previous rant: The entire system is jacked.  Britain had royalty and the House of Lords that lorded over their subjects.  What we essentially have is two houses of lords.  A common person (I can't believe I am even saying that) can't hope to be elected to congress without incredible amounts of money and the corresponding quid pro quo debts behind them.  How is it that only lawyers and the rich are qualified to "serve" as our representatives?  Nearly $2.5 billion was spent in the last presidential race.  Some would say that Obama is the exception.  Not really.  Look at who bankrolled that campaign - among many other power brokers, foreign and domestic - George Soros.  It shouldn't be so hard to replace incumbents but they've stacked the deck in their favor.  They've set the whole system up to serve them, the people they owe favors to and their family and friends.  They take from the money we send to feather their own nests, exactly the situation that would mark the end of the union according to Jefferson.

All I'm saying is the outlook is bleak.

I thought a Shiksa was more of a temptress than a goat that shaved its ass. That chick is fucking ugly.  And I mean "fell out of the ugly tree and hit every stick on the way down" ugly.  If a milliHelen is the amount of beauty needed to launch a single ship, she has the Seventh Fleet heading back to port right now.  I've seen some ugly fucking women, but one look from her could knock a buzzard off of a shitwagon at 50 paces.

I find her unattractive.

318 Who the hell is Blazer, anyway?  Is he that fat guy? Posted by: Hussein the Plumber

Hop up on my knee young man and I will tell you about the legend of "Blazer". Many moons ago, a quick wit is said to have stumbled across this site while in search of a good single malt scotch. The legend has it that he was sharp as a razor in his attacks upon the moronettes and some of the Praetorian Guards of  AoSHQ. According to some of the old salts that frequent that section of the world wide intertubes, he had sampled some fine single malt one evening and proceeded to challenge one of Ace's Legendary Cob-loggers. It did not go well for this man called "Blazer". Rumors abound that he was spirited away by a young sprite, others say he fled back to his lair in the City of the Monuments, while there are a few that tell that one of Ace's sheriffs banished him to the dungeons of the Val-U-Rite distillery.
That is the legend of "Blazer". I can tell you more, but first you must, well, you know the meme.

I think the proper term is "clunker".

362 What we essentially have is two houses of lords.  A common person (I can't believe I am even saying that) can't hope to be elected to congress without incredible amounts of money and the corresponding quid pro quo debts behind them.

There are two major reasons for this sorry state of affairs and we can blame the asshole "progressives" of both Parties who did it to make the government more "democratic".

First the Senate was removed from being appointed by the legislature to being elected. That made them more of a federal body than a State body and before then campaigning wasn't officially done by the Senators..

Also the second thing was limiting the number of people in the House for "practical reasons". For example, in 1800 near the time the Constitution went into effect SC had a population of 345,000 people and two representatives or about 1 per 170,000 people, most of them concentrated around Charleston.  Today there are 6 representatives covering a population of  4,600,000 or about 1 per 760,000.

So a local representative now covers more people than double the population of the original State. In the past a local Rep knew a lot of his constituents and could campaign a lot cheaper.

In the name of "democracy" we have made the elections less democratic.

Gee, who woulda thunk it.

OK, since this thread is gettin stale, let me give my idea to improve the country (one of many.)

what we need to do, is cut off a nut whenever a lawyer passes the bar. We cut off another one if they break any laws or get elected to state or federal office. If they break a law in office, then we cut off another. When they run out of nuts, we cut off any adjacent protuberances.

Not saying this will help much, but it will make the citizens at least feel a little better about things.

491 Dan, oh am I ever going to vote. We have a couple of union c--ks--kers running, one for governor and one for my local state rep. You wouldn't believe the amount of money the local weasel has to spend on internet ads. As I said before, Michigan is in the toilet financially, and the teachers union has been holding mass rallies to get more tax money to buck up their pensions, paychecks, and cadillac health plans. I have relatives and friends who are teachers. They start out giving a rat's butt about students, and gradually buy into the union crap that higher pay and benefits = quality education for the students.

No, he just stoked the libido.  We were on our own.

I thus blame the school for not supervising him.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama on Friday called ethics charges against Democratic Rep. Charlie Rangel "very troubling" and said he hopes the longtime lawmaker can end his career with dignity. Several House Democrats went further, flat-out urging the New York congressman to resign.

"He's somebody who's at the end of his career," Obama said in an interview that aired Friday on "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric." "I'm sure that what he wants is to be able to end his career with dignity. And my hope is that it happens."

570 Well, why not....it worked for Charlie.....

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) has chosen to go through an ethics trial, like the one lined up for New York Rep. Charles Rangel, rather than accepting charges made by an ethics subcommittee, a source familiar with the process tells POLITICO.

The back-to-back trials of a pair of black lawmakers represent an unprecedented use of an ethics adjudication system that has rarely been used by House members accused of breaking House rules.

Waters' case revolves around allegations that she improperly intervened with federal regulators to help a bank that her husband owned stock in and on whose board he once served.

Hiya, kids.  Been sitting here reading this megaton thread for what seems like years.

So far, the major fly in the ointment I have to point out is that when Repubs have subpoena power in January, what the hell is Holder going to do about it?

Herr, heard from D'oh at the Jamboree a while ago.  In a hotel.  I asked him why the hell they weren't camping, and he said, "Shit, do you know how hot it is here?"

Jane, tonight would be a sweet night for Mr. D'Oh to camp out.  It's supposed to go down to 66 degrees!  That's practically fall temps after all the 100+ degree temps we've had.

According to Daily Caller, Ben Nelson, first Dem to do so, just said he's a NO for Kagan.

He's still going to be out on his arse, but at least he's got more sense than Judd Gregg (R)uinous to the republic, who said he's voting yes.  WTH is wrong with these idiots?

He's still going to be out on his arse, but at least he's got more sense than Judd Gregg (R)uinous to the republic, who said he's voting yes.  WTH is wrong with these idiots?

Ben Nelson really wants to be a senator in 2013 doesn't he?

Preview of Obama's new book.

Pat Gray, Glenn Beck's foil on radio, just read "Dreams From My Father" (aka Issues from My Daddy), and in discussing it talked about Ovomit's grandpappy and father who deserted him to end imperialism (capitalism) in Kenya.  So all those dreams were dreams of communism.  So the electorate's got that goin' for them, which is nice.

I never doubted it for a minute.

Apparently, Rangel's district has an history of electing and re-electing losers.  On Monday, Rush was talking about some guy who in the 1950's represented that district until Congress kicked him out for corruption.  The district had a run-off election to fill his seat, and he won that election.  He ended up not serving, but ran for re-election the next cycle and win.  That district is flush with Teh Stupid.

Is everyone (that is, everyone who expects to be back next session) getting in line behind Charlie to get their wrist-slap this term, rather than waiting for the inquisition that awaits after November?

Are we going to see a dozen Dems all lining up begging to be reprimanded now?

Will the Congressional Black Caucus volunteer to be sent to the comfy chair en masse?

I still say we need to get a couple pickups, set up guillotines in the beds,  and drive them around DC just to send a message.

Please don't, this Banana republic isn't worth it. Had some O'Marty drone troll up to the door, gushing about his greatness, along with the glory of a single party state, and its noble contribution to the US governance body.

Until she saw my Gadsten flag, by my PC monitor, when I opened the door wider.

The conversation ended soon after, with a sour departing look on her part.

At least you have some sort of representation in PA - corrupt, but still representitive... and not a rubber-stamp of One party rule without any opposition.

665 Aren't there EQUAL numbers of both parties on that ethics committee ? It sure does look like the Dems are serious about cleaning up the House. They could have easily stiopped the actions of that committee. When the GOP was in charge Hastret was made at their recommendation against Delay and simply removed the 3 GOP reps which meant that there was Bo quorum and so action was stopped. Pelosi ALLOWED it to proceed/
