Seems Like Old Times: MSNBC In Ratings Collapse, Down 20% Year-Over-Year
— Ace

Discussing mere numbers is boring.

Let's talk about specific names of specific failures. Failure isn't interesting unless it's attached to a human agent of failure. No one ever goofed on an anticipated circular storm for failing to kill people.

The soft start for All In With Chris Hayes has not helped. Hayes, down 32 percent in total viewers from The Ed Show last May, has offered a poor lead-in for MSNBC's primetime flagship, The Rachel Maddow Show, at 9 p.m. The show delivered its lowest-rated month since it debuted in September 2008 (717,000 total viewers) and its second lowest with adults 25-54 (210,000). Maddow was topped by typical time slot victor Sean Hannity and CNN's Piers Morgan.

Chris Hayes' massive throbbing failure has transformed Ed Schultz into a Titan of Broadcasting.

I was confused by the whole thing and was pretty sure I would come home and check the news and find out that Michele Bachman had done some horrific crime the way they kept making her out to be a criminal.

22 One might argue that MSNBC suffers from being available on the non-basic cable packages but that doesn't excuse their YOY numbers.... unless... their viewers are of the 47% class and, finding themselves fighting cost-of-living increases on a fixed budget, can no longer afford cable.

145 Brian Stelter of the New York Times covers the media and has written a series of articles over the years about the awesome growth in MXNBC ratings.

Below is a sample from just after the 2012 election. Wonder if Brian will cover the recent developments.

When President Obama won Virginia and most of the other battleground states on Tuesday night, ensuring himself a second term as president, some at MSNBC felt as if they had won as well.

During Mr. Obama’s first term, MSNBC underwent a metamorphosis from a CNN also-ran to the anti-Fox, and handily beat CNN in the ratings along the way. Now that it is known, at least to those who cannot get enough politics, as the nation’s liberal television network, the challenge in the next four years will be to capitalize on that identity.

237 The United States [Federal Government], which opposed the [New York and New Jersey] legislation, offered the Soviet Union landing rights at a military base so its foreign minister, Andrei A. Gromyko, could fly in for the General Assembly meeting. But the Soviets refused. When the United Nations committee met to review the situation, the Soviet delegate, Igor I. Yakovlev, said the ban on landing "raises the question of whether the United Nations should be in the United States."
A furious Mr. Lichenstein replied that if member states felt "they are not being treated with the hostly consideration that is their due," they should consider "removing themselves and this organization from the soil of the United States. We will put no impediment in your way," he continued, "The members of the U.S. mission to the United Nations will be down at the dockside waving you a fond farewell as you sail off into the sunset."

262 MSNBC isn't going anywhere, it's the Democrats very own C-SPAN.

If you pay for cable you're paying for MSNBC. In spite of it's 'ratings collapse', like ratings matter, MSNBC gives its owners access to the White House.

High level access and favorable PR are worth a lot more than ad revenues to a cable company/media conglomerate like Comcast worth $80 billion.

Look what MSNBC did for GE when they owned it - the CEO got to hang out with the POTUS.

It's all about access and reliable PR spin, otherwise MSNBC would have disappeared a decade ago.

Plus I think the show validates people who really should be getting psychiatric help.

I am of a mind to call our station and ask them to drop it.

They should replace Rachell's show with "Vag Chat", hosted by Sandra Fluke....and/or Keith Olberdork. Alternatively, "Weiners Whimsies", hosted by the Next Mayor of NYC.....you know who!

331 These rating numbers are strange. I would have thought with so much of the core viewership unemployed and living in Mom's basement that the ratings would have been higher.

334 So who are these people - this Chris Hayes and a person called Rachel Maddow - of which you speak?  Should I value their opinions? Do they know anything of theories of Natural Law, or turkey hunting, or the fiscal realities facing these United States, or do they know of a better way to build a firewood shed in my back yard?  Are they persons I should care about except as souls to be saved, or not?

335 Something about that Maddow fellow. Not sure what it is. Strong jaw line? I bet he gives great head. I'd certainly pay $20 to find out.

336 Americans are becoming a lot more focused on the scandals in Washington.  When both the NYT and the AP flip the bird at the White House, things are getting serious.  MSNBC is not serious.  CNN has come to the conclusion that it must be more serious.  FOX is beating the war drums.  It's gonna be one helluva summer.

"Dude, he would laugh on my face at such a wimpy call out. Id need to challenge him with reciting the parts of a tridentine mass or something."

If he needs a St. Joseph Missal , the Mass of Pope John XXIII version, he can borrow one of mine.

Posted by: mrp at May 29, 2013 04:49 PM (HjPtV)

337 Chris Hayes is a whinier, more feminine version of Rachel Maddow.

How that was supposed to translate into ratings success is a mystery.

340 How MSNBC Became Fox’s Liberal Evil Twin
Published: August 31, 2012

MSNBC has pumped up its ratings by recasting itself as a left-leaning riposte to Fox News, and that’s fine. Fox long ago proved that a lot of viewers like to hear cable anchors echo what they already think; MSNBC is just playing catch-up. Fox is still well ahead, especially during a Republican convention, but on Tuesday, there were times when MSNBC drew significantly more convention viewers than CNN.

345 I watched MSNBC last night. A few observations... 1. Unlike CNN or even FOX, there were no guests representing "the other side". Everyone was highly sympathetic to MSNBC's politics, and in total agreement with each other. It was, to put it crudely, a circle jerk. But I figure if three people have the same views, two of them are unnecessary. 2. They spent much of their time downplaying the Obama administration's current scandals. They blamed it on the Republicans even though most mainstream media are covering these scandals extensively and carrying the stories forward. It was crassly partisan, without much regard for the public interest, IMHO. 3. Maddow, O'Donnell, and Hayes all covered pretty much the same stories with slightly different takes. One may as well save time and watch only one of them.
