NPR: Souter's Retiring
— Ace

Let me just pretend this is another thread, and not a duplicate of DrewM's post.

Some good p-shops at Free Republic, including a long-overdue return of The Tourist Guy.

This is a good one:

1 Well, gee, can't wait to see what ultra-right winger we'll get in there now. Hard to beat Souter on his VRWC status.

5 Ooooo, I bet his replacement will make Darth Bader Ginsburg look downright conservative.

Posted by: Rushbabe at April 30, 2009 04:22 PM (LKkE8)

6 Actually, this is good.  Souter hardly ever voted the right way, so we aren't losing anything.  And the nomination process will have hearings and the nominee will be a good example of Obama's thinking (or his legal advisors).

It's bound to be someone controversial, and it will be fresh in people's minds going into 2010.

7 Maybe he'll finally get around to putting a roof on his house and some siding,....hell they that shit was peeling off even in the eighties, I can't imagine what shape it's in now .

9 Usually a justice tries to retire under the same political party of the president that appointed. What a shock Souter didn't.

Posted by: ricky at April 30, 2009 04:25 PM (muUqs)

10 Well, I guess Souter had no illusions about which party he's affiliated with... it's important to quit while your replacement will be chosen by the right sort of people.

17 Guarantee he'll pick the nuttiest leftist from the Ninth Circus.

One thing we'll be spared from the next nominee's confirmation hearings is watching Joe Biden take 20 minutes to ask a single question.

Posted by: kbdabear at April 30, 2009 04:29 PM (miw86)

18 So he'll get Souter, Ginsberg, and Stevens replacements probably, with a 60 vote lock of a majority for confirmation and fawning media coverage for whatever candidate to boot.  He can nominate whatever far-left assclown he wants.  Awesome.  Just when I think I've overloaded on awesome political news, there's this.

30 Breaking this story late on Thursday is PR whoring at it's finest. Sure to get wall-to-wall coverage all day Friday, plus some sweet Saturday action. Not to mention the scrambling that'll take place for the Sunday news shows.

Just watch. Scare Force One would have been the most important story on the Sunday shows, now it's a footnote. You can't tell me that the White House wasn't saving the Souter retirement for a rainy day.

33 Actually, this can turn out to be a good thing. Remember Barry is a weak-kneed, thin-skinned narcissist. A SCOTUS nomination is a good opportunity to increase stress on the Perfect One. Bury the WH in tea bags and lace wigs. Use this as an opportunity to educate the public about the Constitution.

Posted by: eman at April 30, 2009 04:37 PM (Dec0Z)

Obama has implicity stated that he'd appoint left-wing activist judges; something about (his version of) "justice" coming before the actual, you know, law.

Don't count on someone squishy enough that they might occasionally put the text and intent of the Constitution ahead of their personal leftist ideology.  Clinton nominated Ginsburg, and compared to Obama, Bubba was Barry fucking Goldwater.

Posted by: Hollowpoint at April 30, 2009 04:44 PM (plsiE)

47 I wouldn't be surprised to see Bill Clinton campaigning for the job, that way he could be only the second President to also be a Supreme Court justice, and it would be a sop to the Clintonistas.

As far I guess the deciding factor will be whether or not Collins and Snowe have seen the shot across the bow from the GOP and decide to fly right or not.  As far as I know Franken hasn't been seated yet so it's still 59-41 putatively.  I don't hold out much hope for them however.  I see them fighting each other to switch parties in order to get as good a deal as Specter.  Once Franken is seated the Dems don't need them anymore so seniority etc will be out the window.

ABC's Shame

ABC runs a report showing the names and faces of two CIA contractors who may have had a role in the waterboarding of KSM and Abu Zubaydah. The network apparently outsourced this report to a freelancer named Matthew Cole, whose record in Nexis includes just three bylines -- two stories for Salon (one of which about "how Bush administration aid to Pakistan helps fund insurgents who kill U.S. troops"), and one for the San Jose Mercury News just two days after 9/11 reporting "anxiety about a backlash" among Muslims, who assure the reporter that the attack "has nothing to do with Islam."

So, when is Operation... Whatever Ace called it, going to go into affect and we're actually going to hound the so-called "watchdogs" the way they do to ordinary citizens?  We can start by publishing Katie Couric's address

Ironic, isn't it:  those two ABC News assholes "out" two guys involved with the waterboarding program, obviously not giving a shit that they will destroy their lives, make them hire security forever, and threaten their families' safety.

When OF COURSE any sensible person knows that those two ABC News assholes will also have to hire security to protect them and their their families' safety ---forever.

Mr. Ross: please explain to your kids and grandkids their need to wear Kevlar vests, and answer "why is that man with the dark glasses, broad chest and machine pistol pushing  my swing"???

116 Breaking this story late on Thursday is PR whoring at it's finest.

122 Greetings, o drainers of fermentation vessels.  I'm finally home from a late rehearsal.  The weather warms up and the gigs are coming fast, so tonight we ran late.

I say the best p-shop was looter-dood-O, at the bottom.  What you can't tell from the photo is that the water is eight inches deeper than it seems, but he is walking on necks, so it looks like it's kinda shallow.  Like the questions at a presidential news conference.

These reporters remind me of the eunuchs in "The Last Emperor"  Only one "full male" was allowed inside the Forbidden City at night.  Just like the presidential pressers.  I wonder if the C-Span camera could pan to the left of the door to show the jars of pickled testicles stacked there.

I promised di a story.  You here, di?

Posted by: di butler (new and improved! With 20% bigger boobs!) at April 30, 2009 08:30 PM (qPIRP)

127 di,

Nah, you didn't miss it.  I just didn't scroll down far enough on the main page to see that an overnight thread was there.  I just jumped in here thinking it would become the overnight thread.

Here's the story, in brief.  I didn't want to ruin the mood last night.  You mentioned a case of someone who was flat, who became well-endowed late in life (we'll set aside circumstances).  I knew a girl in school who had the same experience.  The thing is, she and I were ordinary friends.  We could shoot the shit.  I never hit on her, and vice-versa.  She told me about how tough it was being flat.  We had laughs.

She later married a guy I knew pretty well, and who we all liked.  They had a kid, and my friend from school grew.  And grew.  It was all natural, and she ended up with serious major-leaguers, and was pretty happy.  I'd run into her once in a while, and she was also on the periphery of my own extended family, so there was a sort of double connection.  She was someone I always liked, and always enjoyed seeing.  Over the years she ended up divorced, but still connected to her ex's family.  They didn't stay married, but I'm sure they never stopped caring for each other.

We lost her to breast cancer a few years ago.  I'm not sure I've ever grieved properly for her.  I do know she was greatly loved by many people, and I'm glad of that.  Her name was Melissa.

That's the story.  It's why your story reminded me of her.  It's also why I had to play that song.  I played several others, to lift the mood.  She wasn't a gloomy type, so I chased away the blues with some blues.

Tonight we prepped for a gig, so it was like work.  I'm a little worn out.  But I wanted to see what the moronocracy was up to.

Remeber when you all were boasting about the greates, and weirdest, places you've had sex?  Well, these two people have a great answer, and even better story: http://tinyurl.com/dn6l8w

The  pair, in their early thirties, stripped on a private grass bank at the castle, where Her  Majesty was in residence.

They were  watched by crowds of tourists beneath the castle's Garter  Tower, in full view of hotels, pubs and shops over the road . .

Witness  Mark Robinson, 44, told The Sun: "One window from the guardroom opened  up and when a soldier saw what was going on he told his mates – and lots of windows opened . .

"They even ignored the Please Keep Off The Grass signs."

Miss Marple,

In a sane world I'd agree with you. But the nominee, who could be slightly to the left of Ward Churchill for all it matters, will be heralded by the MSM and proclaimed the smartest justice alive, a centrist who seeks consensus, principled, tough, a scrapper with integrity, yada, yada, etc.

Republicans who object to the candidate will be crucified by the Democrats and the media as being naysayers and mean-spirited, and this is how it will play out to the public. Shouldn't say it in this day and age, but this is AoS. If the nominee is a woman and/or a minority, the demagoguery will be even worse. I'm remembering Anita Hill and "these old white men" that "just don't get it" daring to question her.

Maybe, just maybe, if this was a year or two from now and people were getting a little sick of Obamaworld, your scenario would come to pass. But we're still under the spell of the Lightworker, and any who oppose HIM must be silenced.
