Romney Tours Damaged Areas in Louisiana; Obama Suddenly Remembers "Oh, Right, I'm Still President, I'm Supposed To Do Things Like That" And Follows Romney's Lead
— Ace

Remember when the media was insisting that Romney, apparently head of FEMA, cancel the convention to deal with Isaac?

Well, he's not the head of FEMA, but he did something the actual head of FEMA forgot to -- tour the affected areas.

President Barack Obama was today forced to announce he will fly to storm-hit Louisiana on Monday – hours after Mitt Romney beat him to the punch by deciding to head there this afternoon.
After it emerged that Obama was still taking time to fit in a campaign stop in Cleveland, Ohio before checking out how clean-up operations are proceeding in the Bayou state, the Obama campaign abruptly cancelled that event.

'In light of the President’s travel to Louisiana to meet with local officials and view ongoing response and recovery efforts to Hurricane Isaac, President Obama will no longer travel to Cleveland, Ohio on Monday, September 3,' the campaign said in a terse statement.

Obama is the one actually in charge of FEMA. He's also the one with a solid block of campaign stops through the storm.

Posted by: Roy at August 31, 2012 10:30 AM (VndSC)

59 Are we sure the chair is occupied?

No mention of Mississippi, Alabama, or Florida in the President's visit - all states which got flooded by Isaac's rains.  Counties in Mississippi were declared federal disaster areas.

If Obama had been smart, I know..., he would have cancelled his fund raising efforts with the approach of Isaac.  Now not only does Obama have to pivot on visits, but the entire President is visiting machine also has to pivot.  If Obama had not been jetting about during the RNC convention to fill his war coffers it would have been easier to plan and coordinate a visit to Louisiana.

I bet Romney and his staff started planning a visit on Tuesday.  And kept contacts with Gov. Jindal low-key and dependent upon Jindal's judgement.  So when things looked better, the Romney machine smoothly went into action after approval from Jindal.

So now Obama is playing catch up and that is what everyone will think.  There will be truth in that belief, just not the way it looks.  And do I even want to find out if Obama's FEMA direction has stopped fundraising for Obama long enough to do anything?

201 You could express concern for her alcohol poisoning--she did chug during speeches by Fortuno, Martinez, Rice, West, Rubio, Love, etc etc, right?- That was my first thought. Oh hey is your throat still raw from having to have your stomach pumped then? Another point to make would be that unless she was on the floor at the convention how would she know the racial composition of all the delegates since she was limited to what the camera of her station of choice (presumably MSNBC) chose to show. Shouldn't she be questioning the racism of the camerapeople, directors and producers instead?

"Since [Romney] is not currently a government official, he has no assistance to offer, and all he can do is get in the way (especially with his large entourage/Secret Service and by diverting local law enforcement attention away from recovery)," said Brian Brox, a political scientist at Tulane University.

"I understand Jindal's offer and Romney's acceptance (this will allow Romney to get some optics of doing the kind of chief executive things we expect presidents to do), but I would think the best possible outcome of this visit would be that he just doesn't get in the way."

220 Watching the Ryan-Rubio etc.. speeches I just could not get over how the much the current republican party look like a young, focused, and rising majority party like the FDR/Reagan coalitions that dominated the following decades.

Currently I would give about a 20% chance., that Jan 20 2013 may very well be the beginning of a 16-24 year streak of Romney-Ryan Rubio in the White house. The current Republican agenda of:

-states rights
-school vouchers (ebt for education)
-energy development
-save the safety net from itself
-no welfare without work
-pro-family values
-etc..

Has wide support, the olds media clenched fist is but hastening its own downfall,  Very fast growing hispanic majority even if it continues to vote 50-60% dem, their own social conservativeness will force democrats to water down some of their gay marriage and abortion stances to remain relevant.

The democrats old model of poor brown people voting for rich white coastal and DC elites to rule over them while their streets and schools collapse is coming to an end because of financial realities.  The only question now is soft landing or hard landing.  As Charter schools gain mainstream acceptance and the old media rusts away this whole system will reorient.

However, Iran has/nearly has Nukes, and even with a full court all of the above energy press we are 10-20 years from full energy independence... so this could all blow up in our face.  I can tell you this, If Obama wins a second term or Romney Ryan patch up the titanic and turn it around democrats as they have existed since the 60's are old dried up and spent.  They will either bend to Hispanic social conservationism and family support or they will become a non-nationally competitive entity.

230 Mama AJ, I will probably be turning blue about the whole Cat 5 of Katrina for the next twenty years.  When Katrina went ashore over Waveland, MS it was a borderline Cat 3/Cat 2 storm.  That is what the post-storm data showed.  What it had working for it was size, filled the whole Gulf.  It also moved slowly ashore so it hung around and pounded everything.  So did the winds which funneled all that water into Lake Pontchartrain.

Add the fact the levees, which Sen. Landrieu screamed in the house of landfall that the US Government should have funneled more billions into, failed in a storm they were supposedly designed to survive-that was twenty plus years of local parishes and the Corps failing on the job.  Post storm study of levees that did not fail showed their original construction was substandard.

And the New Orleans pumping stations.  They were not designed to survive inundation.  And some of the stations had been in existence for 100 years when Katrina hit.

Then add in human caused disasters like Blanco and Nagin, it becomes a miracle that more people did not die due to Katrina.

288 They're too stupid to realize just how far out of the mainstream they really are.

____

I couldn't figure out what the MSM was up to when they deny their obvious bias, like the NYT editor slapping down their own public editor for saying that the NYT bleeds progressivism, CNN blaming their ratings decline on being too even-handed, and Alcatraz O'Brien denying her bias after getting caught on air reading a moonbat blog, to name only a few recent examples.  Sherlock Holmes explanation of deductive reasoning that if you eliminate the impossible, whatever is left, however improbable, is the truth, doesn't help in that I was faced with two seeming impossibilities, to wit:  Are they really that stupid or do they really think that the American people are that stupid?

But I think there is a third possibility.  They are not so stupid as to think that they are unbiased and they are not so stupid as to think that the American people would believe that they are unbiased.  Rather they are selling out their own reputations and any honor they may hove for the purpose of encouraging their moonbat audience.  They will sacrifice all if they can convince a few small "m" morons to vote Obama.

It would be a pretty poor "surprise speaker."   You'd expect the Secretary of State,    and former First Lady, to be in attendance at    her party's convention.       Having    her    sneak in under cover of darkness to address the assembly would smack of desperation.  " What, they couldn't get someone else?"

The fact that she's NOT going to be there    is more of a story than her suddenly showing up.

...have you ever seen Barack Obama show any emotion?

Yes. But never empathic or sympathetic emotion. Only thin-skinned reax to criticism.

373 The look Obama gave him was emotional, for sure.

I believe "blinding hatred" would describe it.

374 Bobby-J should announce this weekend that he will be unable to meet with Zero during his visit, due to his having discussed some serious initiatives with Governor Romney during his Friday visit, that involve many private meetings with local families and rescue workers. He should then offer to send along an empty chair to accompany the JEF on his the-puddles-have-all-receded tour, representing himself as too-busy-to-mope-around.

377 @Romeo great point.  One thing I think we often overlook is that most of the commodities like oil markets are based on future expectations.  If they expect 2-5 yr out oil to be cheaper or more expensive instantly starts affecting what prices they will buy and sell at.

385 Quoting Anna Puma: "Somewhat lighter news - man arrested for stealing Ding Dongs and found to have MJ on him."

LOL!  I though MJ meant Michael Jackson, like he pilfered a Thriller CD or something.  Maybe I ought to stop smokin' that other MJ, ya think?

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at August 31, 2012 04:14 PM (r4wIV)

And the thing about Obama is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn't even seem to be livin'... until he taxes ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched unemployment. The balance sheet turns red, and despite all the poundin' and the hollerin' Obama comes in and... he taxes you to pieces.

Someday there will be a portrait of the stuttering clusterfuck of a miserably tyrant in the White House, bold as brass, as if he wasn't the worst thing to happen to this country since polio.

Just hang it in the kitchen.

I pre-emptively denounce myself, twice thrice*, for good measure.

*One phrase I thought of was so bad I had to denounce myself and erase and replace it before posting.

389 129 OT, sorta: My libtard sister (who's 43 and should know better) just posted on her FB page that she and some friends were playing a "spot the black person" drinking game during the RNC.

Do I let that sleeping dog lie, or is there a Moron who can hook me up with something I can bitchslap her with? Jakeman Sr. is rolling over in his grave. Posted by: jakeman at August 31, 2012 03:38 PM

Present her with the black and brown people who spoke at the RNC, and then show her the mostly white faces of those speaking at the DNC

390 Obama doesn't really have to worry about anything but the optics and politics of Romney being there.

If Issac had made a mess of things and people were drowning, we all know that it would have been Bobby Jindal's fault.

Yep, and as gas is ALREADY more the $4.00 a gallon in California?  Look out...

Last week I was filling up my tank, when a guy pulled up next to me in an old truck, with 5 Obama stickers on it....  I told him "Hmmm.... gas is as $4.04 a gallon, I think you're going to need more stickers...'... he was not amused.... LOL

Posted by: Cricket at August 31, 2012 11:29 AM (DrC22)

393 One point that strikes me about Mitt is that you don't build staples/Dominoes etc.. by pulling a Bush and push hard at the beginning and then sit back and soak up the profits.  Guess that's how oil drilling money works but business money is everyday a new challenge from any direction and if you get caught sleeping you can lose everything nearly overnight.  Mitt sincerely seems like he will play all 9 innings.   We probably wont like all of his more moderate decisions and compromises he makes with the possibly still democrat senate to get stuff passed... but he will run out the clock.

I think back on the Big Dig fiasco that happened I think as his term as Gov was wrapping up, and he jumped in with both feet and fought hard.  Mitt is many things but Bush/McCain/Dole silent punching bag aint one of them.  At least not after his 08 primary debates.  I wouldn't say this often but we can thank Huckabee for teeching Mitt to fight with the gloves off and stop looking over for an official to call fouls.  Street ball.. Ok thats enough sports metaphor but I really wanted to put a deep sea tuna fishing metaphor/joke in there but wazzername shultz, fluke, and Cher are beyond parody.

Red Skelton.
Danny Kaye.
These guys used to do routines where they were....'rambling'....on purpose.

It used to be a common comedy 'shtick'.
I grew up watching it being used.

It's a way of delivering Zingers...politely....and with deniability.
If someone takes issue with one of the Zingers....
You say:
"Oh well, I was just...rambling....just thinking out loud."
