Research 2000: What We're Going To Reveal Could Be The End of the Daily Kos
— Ace

Pushback.

Now, what I think could have been the end of the Daily Kos was the assertion that R2K gave Kos good numbers but then Kos changed them, thus creating the suspiciously non-random patterns.

What they really say, though, is that the scandal about Kos is about owing people money, which isn't a good thing, but it's usually not the kind of thing that destroys someone's credibility.

The liberal blogger fired the pollster earlier this month and said he intends to sue in coming days. His State of the Nation polls tracked the favorable and unfavorable ratings for national elected leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Del Ali, president of Research 2000 in Olney, Md., said he could not respond to the specific allegations Tuesday and referred questions to his attorney, who did not return a call seeking comment.

“I can tell you, we’re fine. What we’re going to reveal, that will be the end of the Daily Kos,” Ali said. “I can say, it has to do with people owing money.”

Still, here's hoping for some popcorn-worthy stuff.

Via Gabe's Twitter feed.

Caution on Falsified Data Claims? Someone in the biz notes that R2K was considered one of the least accurate polls, and asks, "If they were just faking data, couldn't they have averaged Gallup and Rasmussen and faked something closer to accurate?"

Also questions whether some of the offered proofs of falsification are particularly strong.

One thing that I don't get is this paired-odds and paired-evens business. If you have an even number, and split it, you have to get both even numbers or both odd numbers. That's what an even number is.

The polling person also suggests that with sample sizes of 2500, subgroups of 600 or 800 should still yield decent results with a not-too-bad margin of error.

6 So true story. During the 2000 recount, Kos was my personal chakra masseuse. Whenever I needed a good, um, karmic cleansing. He was there for me. Sometimes, he'd reach around and lick my third chakra, too while he cleansed the second one.

My guess is that they gave him the poll results he paid for -- and his check bounced.

He has already sent a cease and desist letter to Mr. Silver, who runs fivethirtyeight.com (and will be joining The New York Times in August), citing negative statements he has made on his Web site about the polling company in the past. 98 And then wait for the check to clear.

No checks!  Cash, Krugerrands, bearer bonds, diamonds, etc.

My dad taught me about a trick you can sometimes use when people write a bad check.  He used it a few times over the years in business.

You call the bank and say you're holding a check from so-and-so for $X and ask if it will clear.  If they say no, call back a few hours later, then tell'em you're holding a check for $X-$500, $X-$1,000, etc and so on until you've kinda zeroed in on what is really in the scumbag's account.

Then go down to his bank and deposit enough of your own cash into his account so that the check for $X will clear now.  Banks will generally accept deposits into an account from someone who isn't the account owner.

Of course you're out the cash you had to deposit to bring his account balance up, but at least you got something...and it really pisses off the dude who thought he was going to fuck you out of everything when you turn it around and fuck them back draining their account..

103 There are lots of possible scenarios to "explain" this. Here's a couple:

Kos knowingly bought bad numbers.

Kos smelled a rat a long time ago but the scent was just too sweet to act on.

After learning he was about to be exposed, Kos turned rat in order to shift the blame.

I'm tired and it's late so I'll confine my future comments to snarking, but a wunderkind like Kos doesn't get rolled -- for years -- by a bogus pollster. There's lots more to this story.

104 Remember when Kos first came online: 2002, during the Black Years of the Democratic Party, when they couldn't shoot straight. But you could still get a bank loan if you could talk a good line of bullshit. What Kos did was web design and web architecture. Kos probably owes people out the ass because his sports and online women's websites haven't panned out in this economy, and instead of becoming a wealthy behind the scenes Dem power broker with a website, he believed his own propaganda and sat down in front of the camera too much and made enemies of too many Democrats. Believe me, a lot of Dems want this guy's ass.

No, Ace, the numbers are independent, not the result of a split even number.  E.g. all pairs of Favorable among Men - Favorable Among Women matched.

Sadly, yes.

No one that I've seen is asking this important question, however:

Is Larry King retiring or did CNN force him out as part of a general shake up at CNN? Remember, Campbell Brown announced she's leaving the network soon. Old Larry's ratings generally sucked. Is it that much of a stretch to think he's being put to pasture?

123 Here's a link to a story from National Journal from April of this year pointing out a "house effect" for Kos's polling. http://tinyurl.com/2ctaj3y In it are a few choice words from Markos about Research 2000. One of the things that I think will come out eventually is that Kos was getting Research 2000 to make his demographics look more like the 2008 Presidential election instead of a Republican landslide to kind of slow the MFM meme that Republicans were going to make big gains in 2010. He was chronically undercounting older voters.

Looking at Nate Silver's tweet stream to see if he was really lumping R2K in with Rasmussen, I didn't see it (the cease and dsist letter from R2K's lawyers is really pretty terrible).   I did see that he is considering shifting his model from registered voters to likely voters and that the Dems would not like what they were going to see.

129 A nonobvious way the GOP benefits from Kos' misfortune is that the lefties themselves will start clamoring for poll transparency.  The right can then use that debate to re-urge global lefty polling bias based on representation sampling.  Obama's poll numbers have been slipping in even the most pro-Administration quarters, but how much worse would they be if we removed sample bias?

Posted by: Blacksheep at June 29, 2010 07:57 PM (B8ZBN)

132 but how much worse would they be if we removed sample bias? Posted by: Blacksheep

It's a good question, but I doubt severely that the Left is willing to give up on any front no matter how weak it may seem right now. They are not rational magnanimous creatures that would do such a thing especially if there is even a remote chance that the numbers break against their candidates and policies. Notice how it wasn't the Right that turned every single area of life into a political battle. The Left views every bloody thing under the sun as a brickbat that can be used to attack the Right.

Petulence Obama's poll numbers are an odd thing. The 'Country's Course' versus 'President's personal approval' numbers are the most disconnected stats one can imagine. I suspect a portion of these polls is affected by the sample bias, but I think there is something else involved, whether it's respondents compensating for answering negatively toward all levels of governance or some sense of respondents wanting to appear 'fair.'

His response was that people who read tabloids deserve to be lied to.

And this it is with Kos.

You're not reading that site because you want actual data; you're reading it because you want feel-good numbers to help you vent your liberal spleen.   That board is infected with 9-11 "truthers". . .that's all you need to know.

"What we're going to reveal will be the end of Daily Kos. . .it has to do with people owing money".

The only revelation that's going to "end" the Daily Kos is if these guys have receipts showing that the site was bankrolled by Bush and Cheney since its inception.

If its just that Kos is a deadbeat?  So what?  Probably most of his readers are too.

139 Ed Anger @ #106 is probably close to the truth:  they can prove Kos knew about the bad data or methodology or even suggested it or demanded it as a condition of the contract.  I would have thought the same, but that there is nothing in writing to that effect, enabling him to get out front by "exposing" the BS and thereby diverting attention from himself.  But maybe they have emails or something . . .

Another great question is:  What about Kos' new book, which supposedly "proves" conservatives are all nut-case Neanderthals, proven by the results of polling by . . . you guessed it!  This thing is supposed to be coming out soon - what do they do, pull it back and erase references to the polling firm, but keep the data?  If they delete the data, he has no book to sell!

I love the smell of Schadenfreude in the morning . . .
