Republican-Controlled House Schedules Vote on Gun Control Measure For Next Week
— Ace

This is why I laugh at people who say things like "I can't vote for Trump; I'm a principled conservative.".

The House will vote on a counter-terrorism package that will include a provision to prevent suspected terrorists from buying guns, Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., told Republicans on a conference call Thursday, according to a source on the call.

The House, when it returns next week from its July 4 recess, will also vote on a mental health bill , sponsored by Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Tim Murphy, Ryan told his House colleagues.

...

On the call, Ryan said it common sense that suspects on terror watch lists not be able to buy guns, but he wants to be sure that any provision protects due process for people who may mistakenly be added to such lists.

Now in theory, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a bill that blocks suspected terrorists from buying guns -- so long as there are strong due process safeguards, and that people have the right to challenge the finding and have a lawyer paid for by the state. (You shouldn't go bankrupt trying to get your name off a list you were added to with no due process standards, other than a bureaucrat's say-so.)

But of course the Democrats would never agree to any true safeguards -- their strategy is to always demand more than Republicans will/can give. It is a key election strategy that they not have any law the Republicans buy into. they want the election issue. They don't give a shit if terrorists have guns or not. They want to win the House, and they'll murder American citizens with their own hands for a better chance at that.

They really just want something else to point at when Republicans bring up their miserable record on combating terrorism. Oh, I mean combating violent extremism and/or man-made disasters.

And meanwhile, the Republicans will keep chasing the Democrats -- watering down procedural protections until they vanish altogether.

The Democrats either want no law or at all, or a complete surrender by the Republicans which will demoralize GOP voters while showing Democrat voters that Democrats can show they're "tough" enough to burn the Constitution in their quest for power.

I just can't see the Republicans doing anything here but embarrassing themselves and further alienating their base. They're patsies, and always will be.

10 The senate bill that's supposedly the one the house will use vote has the NRA's backing (I think it's the Corbyn bill). If the GOP had any sense they'd ram it down the throat of the dems and say "see, you get what you want AND we respect the 4th and 5th amendments." Alas, they don't.

16 The Democrats always want to impose totalitarian measures because they assume that they'll always be the ones in power to enforce them. How do you like your unconstitutional power-grab now, assholes? This is very reason true conservatives are against more state power -- to prevent shit like this.

26 The NRA's default grade for all politicians needs to now be reset to "F-minus". And if anyone wants a better grade, let them earn it with a properly indexed measure of all of their procedural votes, and not just the "scored" vote, as is now the case. This'll keep asshole politicians (redundancy!), from voting to allow f'ked up bills to reach the floor, where Democrats and (R) traitors will see them through, only to vote "against" the damn thing to preserve their "score". Every granular detail of the process needs to henceforth be scored. Committee votes, procedural votes on rules concerning how future votes will be voted on, parliamentary moves, all of it. Hold. Them. Accountable. Then vote their asses out. Whether by soap box, ballot box, bullet box, whatever. I'm past caring about civility, really. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX

49 I think Ace is reading this one wrong. My bet is that the House passes the Cornyn version that the Dems blocked in the Senate. Since they can't filibuster in the House, that will spike the Democrats wheels. It puts everyone on notice that something will pass, and that even the NRA is on board with it. But the Dems would rather play politics. Of course the media won't report it that way, but I've seen a lot of leftist on Facebook having to admit that the due process problems are REAL problems. I think this tactic goes our way in the minds of the public.

European arms dealers have access to shit tons of genuine full auto war surplus AKs from war zones much closer to Europe. Libya, the Balkan wars, the Ukraine, Syria...

Just seems unprofitable and therefore improbable.

and the "take" is an amendment for national reciprocity.  I would hope it has become abundantly clear to all that we are the first and last hope for our personal safety.  Time for people to train up and take that responsibility.  The conceal carry laws are a hodgepodge of gotchas just waiting to imprison an unwary person for months/years if caught and convicted.

Exactly. Evidence that liberals aren't too bright: they never grasp that the totalitarian measures they support might someday be used against them.

Once in debating a liberal who proposed some grossly un-Constitutional measure (something like shutting down Fox News, IIRC) I mentioned that President Pat Buchanan would doubtless make excellent use of such power. A long silence ensued.

If it ends up being this was a F&F gun, then the scenario of the Obama administration moving these guns overseas to get them out of the media seems plausible.

116 Here is a question, is there an actual case of someone being on the terrorist watch list, buying a gun and using it in actual crime? I'm guessing the same sort of person who would be on this list is really going through legal channels to buy firearms. It's sort of like in New Jersey where there was an effort to tie your firearms ID card to your drivers license on the theory it would make cops more safe during traffic stops becaus then they would know who could potentially have a firearm during a stop. Turns out there has never been a case in New Jersey where a police officer has been shot by someone who legally possessed the firearm he shot the cop with so all cop would have is a database of law abiding citizens.

152 Now in theory, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a bill that blocks suspected terrorists from buying guns -- so long as there are strong due process safeguards, and that people have the right to challenge the finding and have a lawyer paid for by the state. (You shouldn't go bankrupt trying to get your name off a list you were added to with no due process standards, other than a bureaucrat's say-so.) At the very least. I will go so far as to say that when we're moving from a watch list to a list that prevents the exercise of a protected right then there must be due process provisions BEFORE a name is added to the list. Because, you see, I have a sneaking suspicion that the list of terror organizations will be prepared by the Southern Poverty Law Center. In further fuck me running news, the one thing, the ONE MOTHERFUCKING THING, that I have defended the Republicans on since regaining control of the House and then the House and Senate is that gun control has been thwarted. *clings desperately to the Indians* AT LEAST YOU'RE BEING NICE TO ME! In the car yesterday, before I turned it off in disgust, I caught the intro to _Fresh Air_ on NPR, where Terry Gross was interviewing someone about counterterrorism.

In her lead-in, Gross mentioned that Omar Siddiqui Matteen had been reported twice to the FBI but that the feds had closed the file before his rampage.

Of course, what Gross didn't inform her audience of latte liberals about is that the Bureau closed the file on those report because Matteen was a member of a protected class, a Muslim, and that the complaints were dismissed by the feds as being merely due to "racism".

Oh: also on NPR, later in the day, listeners were informed in those weird whispery NPR voices that the Istanbul airport attacks were committed by "suicide bombers". With absolutely no mention of *why* those individuals engaged in suicide bombing. Facepalm.

173 There is no such thing as Islamic terrorism or extremism. These unfortunate incidents are symptoms of hatred, racism, sexism, and lack of diversity and tolerance inherent in white privlege and the concept of American exceptionalism. We deserve to be punished by those we've oppressed. After centuries of hateful discrimination, we cannot blame oppressed victims for fighting back with workplace violence or peaceful protest that get out of control. The only solution is to use whatever means necessary to bring those with anachronistic ideas of self reliance and hateful discrimination into our modern era of enlightenment and understanding. We must defend ourselves from thosewho cling to old preconceptions, unfounded faith in disproven ideals, and deny proven science. They are the threat and barrier to the full realization a peaceful global society of understanding and common good. We must all trust the entirety of our safety, defense and well being to the State. The State will provide for all and punish those who would exploit you. The State will ensure fairness and equality. The State is benevolent and above all base motives of profit and greed. It is the role of the State to provide for the defense of all and our common interests. Owning or bearing arms is a threat to the State and the public and serves no purpose in a peaceful and tolerant society. Self reliance, self defense and independence are in direct opposition to our common ideals and a threat to our society in the name of openness, fairness, and the safety and security of our children and the Middle Class. We must disarm them and bring the enemies of our global society to heel. ~ Your Unigovernment

191 Now in theory, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a bill that blocks suspected terrorists from buying guns -- so long as there are strong due process safeguards, and that people have the right to challenge the finding and have a lawyer paid for by the state.

This sounds reasonable - at first blush. But I think the way you have it stated still gives the government too much power.

First, I think we should be separating out the people who might be on this list into 2 categories: those who are American citizens and those who are not. For non-citizens, if they are suspected of being terrorist they should be removed from the country. If we want to give them some due process, have some kind of detention where they are held until have the chance to defend themselves. However, national security is paramount, so any "rights" they wish to exercise should be secondary to protecting the country.

As to citizens, I would be OK with the government getting something like a TRO, but then subject to some due process where the government would have the burden of proof to turn the temporary ban into something permanent. If they fail to do so in a reasonable timeframe, the temp order runs out and the citizen is once again able to exercise his 2nd amendment rights without restriction.

From historical posting I would have thought you would be a definite NevahTrump.  I see the points you make but for me the arguement to go with Trump is the positive condition of his impeacheability.

It is very easy to believe that there is a point that the constitutional order can be preserved by the Senate impeaching Trump if necessary.  The Democrats would never vote to impeach Hillary, she´s only slightly less protected than Obama.

Damage by Trump is repairable.  Damage by Hillary is systemic and eternal.

Trump may accidently do some things right.  Hillary, like Obama, is set to destroy this country.

235 "I cannot allow Hilary Clinton. I prefer a crapshoot longshot that is Donald Trump. At least he does not have a hate on for the USA." Very true, but I think there is a difference now with Hilary. Obama is an ideological zealot. Leftism trumps all with him. Not that he doesn't like the power, money, and perks, but he truly does not like America. The power is a way for him to be the God that leads his followers to leftist utopia. He is a true Alinskyite warrior for the left. OTOH, I'm coming to believe that Hilary has become so corrupt and jaded that for her, the money and power have become her raison d'etre. She would skip out on an sjw meeting with her acolytes in a heartbeat for another speaking fee or deposit in her favor bank from Google. Obama maybe not quite so much.

If you are a responsible owner of a firearm of any kind and have never broken any law, you are an imminent threat. If people are reporting you to the FBI for making specific threats against people and groups on the basis of your religion or affiliation with certain "JV teams" or similar foreign groups, you are not a threat and above suspicion. Think I'm exaggerating? A jihadi who might be being secretly watched who is turned down for a firearm purchase could use the due process system to ascertain why hes being watched, what hes done that the government is aware of. 437 I'm confused as to why, Ace, you laugh at people who say they can't vote for Trump as a principled conservative. It's not as if there are more than a couple dozen, maybe? conservative House members. And what, three, maybe four conservative Senators?

What doesn't make sense is the people saying they're voting for Trump because he's anti-establishment. Really, Trumpsters? How many incumbent Republican lost primaries? 14 million primary voters energized to change Washington... did even a single GOP incumbent lose his or her primary?

I won't vote for Trump until he can prove that he has a yeoman's understanding of what conservatism really is. Then he's got to prove he'll govern on core conservative principles. Why, as a conservative, would a sacrifice that just to vote for a Democrat? Doesn't mean I'm voting for Hillary, it just means I'll exercise my Constitutional right to not hold my nose -again- and vote for the GOP nominee. Instead, I'll write in Ted Cruz.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at June 30, 2016 02:28 PM (39g3+) The #NeverTrump-er's I know in real life have all come around. They gave me shit for months when I threw in for Team SMOD after Cruz pulled out (despite the fact that I was a vocal critic of Trump until it became clear he was the only non-Hillary/Sanders possibility), but they've all now come to the same conclusion. While communists deserve destruction, nothing more and nothing less, they don't all _know_ they're evil. Hillary is knowingly evil, and literally has no accomplishments other than appointments by fawning leftists looking for a semi-famous woman to put in front of a camera. Being a secretary, being a senator, only means something if you did something of value in those offices. Trump cannot surpass her level of evil, at best tie it if he is something much more than what he's currently credited as, and at least has some experience doing things even if they have nothing to do with the presidency. Further, the GOP is dead anyway, so if Trump just grinds his feet into America's couch after being elected, we can hopefully get a new party or a reboot in another 4 years, and dump a lot of incumbent-for-too-long GOP driftwood in the process. If you're actively concerned about the country, you've reached the same conclusion, even if you hated Trump with a passion 6 months ago, even if you still do today. There is good reason to be suspicious of those still in Trump freakout mode - if they're not shills, they're beholden to the left's approval, seeking to be popular among the cool kids by peacocking negotiable "principles," an impulse which has handed the left the culture war on a silver platter. The latter is actually worse for our side.

I think it's also a sort of random, 'just to be safe put all the names on it' list.
My dad got on it because his name matched the name of an IRA terrorist. It's also a common name (hint: 1st name John), which means....A LOT of men got on the list for having that same name.

Seems to indicate that they just wanted to dump a list of IRA names w/out taking the time to differentiate them from a bunch of Americans of Scots-Irish descent. Like, hey, if they're not the terrorists they'll prove it, so what's the big deal? Transfers the work from the accusers to the accused/terrorist until massive paperwork submitted by citizen proves innocence.

Must be a real mindfuck.

453 If you read about the Orlando case, that guy was taken off the terror watch list. The FBI seemed to really drop the ball. So, what's a new law going to do to make the FBI enforce it better? Logically, reform of the FBI, with perhaps a few firings, would be in order. But that can never happen. (See the VA and its endless scandals.) Instead, our legislators must be shown to "do something" and thus they are now "doing something." The commenter who said that if we keep having terror attacks the 2nd Amendment will go away is correct. Most Americans are soccer mom types and they will demand security. Most people aren't Thomas Jefferson. Now, here's where I offer up a small defense for voting on this kind of bill: it might assuage some people and put some pressure off of dropping the 2nd amendment entirely. The due process is key. Even as I offer this defense up, I don't feel good about it. Our system appears broken.

45 Wasn't it the Trump supporters that told everyone they didn't need the other Republican primary voters to beat Hillary? Now it's the NeverTrumpers that will usher the end of all things because Trump suddenly needs their votes? Except what exactly is Trump doing to unify and win back those voters?

456 My vote for Trump is in reality a vote for the Constitution, a document as forgotten as the holy book in the times of King Josiah. Unlike George Will, I'm banking on the other 2 branches of government rediscovering their historical reason for existence, should Trump prove "Obama-like". If Hillary becomes President, anyone who thinks we won't see the EXACT SAME acquiescence that has gone on these 8 years, is deluded. Also, judges....a chance w/Trump...with Hillary??

458 The Republicans are *denying* the Democrats their election-year wedge issue.  Remember, the Democrats voted this same thing down in the Senate.  But in the House, the Democrats claim the Republicans won't let them vote on it.  Okay, let them vote on it.  And when the Democrats vote it down (because Democrats don't support due process), the Republicans can torpedo their talking points.  They get to look like the compromisers while the Democrats are the stubborn partisans.  Yes, the media will still try to make the Republicans the bad guys, but they won't have the ammunition for it.

This is good strategy, don't know what you're complaining about.

459 I agree Lauren, what America needs is a leader of conscience who is (allegedly) conscious.

No grievance, other than a personal feeling of gratitude for Paul Ryan's efforts in DC since taking the speakership.

He's done game work, and I am certain has a LOT of "win" right around the corner.

He gave Obama more walking around money than he asked for, he is pushing as hard as Obama to keep the waves of Jihadist "refugees" coming in, and is now aiding Obama in attacking the 2d amendment.

I'll bet John Boehner who was my own personal Congressional albatross by the end is kissing the ground in thanksgiving that unlike Dhimmi Carter who had to wait damn near 35 years to have a big enough fuck-up to make America take him off the "worst asshole in this office" mantlepiece Ryan managed to make Boehner look sane in less than a year.
