Report From VA-8: If Enthusiasm Is The Measure, Jim Moran Is Done
— Ace

We went to Murray HQ yesterday and the place was packed with enthusiastic volunteers. The head of the office says it's been like that for over a month. Maybe Jim Moran's time has come.

We were given the names of veterans in the precincts and a door knocking we did go. Many of the vets we spoke to had never heard of Moran's disrespectful statement about military service. I suspect that they'll do their own networking amongst themselves with this new information.

When we came back with our walkbooks the HQ was even MORE crowded with people making calls, compiling information. The place was a hive of activity. I have worked in other campaign offices before, but the level of electricity was more than I'd ever seen.

Nate Silver doesn't even have Jim Moran on his list. I think he ought to.

Here's the Marxist Jim Moran's quote!

“Now in the last seven years we have had the highest corporate profit ever in American history. Highest corporate profit! We’ve had the highest productivity! The American worker has produced more per person at any time, but it hasn’t been shared, and that’s the problem because we have been guided by a republican administration who believes in this simplistic notion that people who have wealth are entitled to keep it and they have an antipathy towards the means of redistributing wealth.”

It would be delicious icing on the cake if Moran went down. but based on how is district is gerrymandered, I would not think there is much of a chance.

Moran, McDermott, Stark, Frank, Kucinich, Waxman

Yeah, as if we really could get rid of  "those people", but alas, they are too safely ensconced in Safe Democrat Districts.

I'll be happy with a swing of 50 or 60 seats, and firm "Hell No!" to any more of Obama's stupid ideas.

21 My friends, as a Concerned life-long Republican, I think that it is time to acknowledge that we have lost. Barney Frank will win by fifty points. Russ Finegold will win by twenty-five points. The American people will not break faith with Dear Leader so early in the forty-year reign of Democratic power. The pollsters may be having some fun to generate interest in the campaign, but we all know deep in our heart of hearts that we are lost. On Wednesday, we will begin the process of amending the Constitution to make Dear Leader President-for-Life. In the current crisis, elections are an expensive and unnecessary distraction to the Permanent Government. In order to promote Change, it is important to move forward without distractions. We are DOOMED!!! DOOMED!!! Yours, A Concerned Life-Long Republican

He's just taking it for granted he'll win. I have, however, seen many signs and sign-holders in the street for his challenger, Dembrowski.

If Dembrowski wins it will be the biggest out-of-nowhere surprise victory in the nation.

How's a guy like Markey, a political hack, gonna win when he doesn't even take the time to ask for your vote?

I don't know why Markey thinks he's immune to enthusiasm gap because his colleagues in MA sure are feeling the heat. They're even debating and spending money for their reelection. Markey is doing nothing.

I suspect that they'll do their own networking amongst themselves with this new information. When I saw the Moran clip here, I gave Murphy a few bucks. Ewok the vote!

110 With MSNBC leaning forward (which bears an astonishing resemblance to bending over) for Barry and the dems and with the other news outlets openly prostituting themselves in a vain attempt to stave off political annihilation, the turn around, as with the summer of recovery, is imminent.

Posted by: Hussein the Plumber at October 31, 2010 03:28 PM (r1h5M)

111 I spent Saturday afternoon volunteer phone-banking for Randy Hultgren (R) in IL-14, a neighboring district that used to be Speaker Denny Hastert's (R) seat until he retired in '06 and the Dems crept in and took it. I am getting really good feelings out here. The place was abuzz all day and we had made over 4,200 calls between us by the time I went home for dinner and they were still at it! Highlight of the day: I phoned a lady on my list (technically, her husband was on the list not her, but she answered) who had moved here from Poland and she told me how glad she was that we were doing this and how much she wanted us to win because she had "had enough of the Communists." That story got laughter and applause from the others in the office after I hung up! Several other people were upset with illegal immigration, something I didn't even have a bullet point for on my candidate's position sheets, but thanks to being informed, I could drop a few lines about Obama suing Arizona for enforcing immigration law and the Democrats wanting to give them amnesty and all those free government handouts and then legalize them so they could buy their votes and subsequently disenfranchise the rest of us. Hopefully, I helped influence some fence-sitters. One story from the people coming back in from precinct walking was of meeting a lone Bill Foster (D-Inc) volunteer during their walk and speaking with him. Turns out he was a college kid who had no idea who Foster was or where he stood on any of the issues. He was just doing this because he was getting paid to! The inside skinny is that the polls look good, up 3-5 points here. Keep it up folks! The air is charged with the electricity of something once-in-a-lifetime special, but only if we make it happen!

I hope Murray wins and I've been working for it. Don't know if it could possibly happen but even the libtards on my street don't have signs up for moran. They left their obama sign up for 3 months.

The libs hate him too and won't even primary him because he has so much dirty cash. Maybe they know they can get rid of him here and then win with some other lib the next time out.

Retire Moran.

Obama rally a warning bell for Democrats

If Saturday’s presidential rally at Philadelphia’s Temple University is any indication, Democrats are in serious trouble on Tuesday.

The warning sign wasn’t the event’s size. Organizers say the 1,600 -person affair inside a campus gymnasium was purposely put together on a smaller scale, compared to President Obama's October 10th outdoor rally, which drew an estimated 18,500 people. Instead, the alarm bells came during interviews with nearly a dozen attendees after the event. Many of the Democrats couldn’t recall Joe Sestak or Dan Onorato’s name without prompting. Others said they support the party’s ticket, but aren’t registered to vote. On her way to go knock on doors for the Democrats, one Philadelphia woman told me her message was, “come on out and vote, because we definitely need everyone out here to vote for Obama.” What did she think about Congressman Joe Sestak? “From what I’ve heard, he’s been in the community for a long time, doing the hard work.” And in the governor’s race? She couldn’t remember Onorato’s name, but said, “If Obama says go behind [Onorato], I trust his word.” In ten separate interviews, no one could tell me anything about Sestak or Onorato, except for the fact they’re Democrats.

174 And chew on this (Washington Post 10-31-10) LINK :

The Democrats' highest hurdle in the final hours will be motivating their voters. While Obama has warned repeatedly that a Republican majority in Congress would have devastating consequences for the country, barely more than half of all Democrats in the poll see a GOP takeover as a "bad thing," little changed from the beginning of the month.  (emphasis added)

176 Really, California is in an awful financial mess. Are people generally in denial about it, or do they think that Obama and the Federal Gov is going to bail them out? Absolutely. They think that they are too big to fail, so they have to get bailed out. The SF Chronicle had the story today of a 911 dispatcher in San Francisco who makes 90K with overtime, whining about a proposal to make city workers pay more for health benefits. Why, he's already in such desperate financial straights that he's had to start shopping at Wal-Mart. Is there no end to this man's oppression?

Please tell me more.  The last new stuff I've seen on this race was a "news" report showing a radio show in which Connolly was berating Fimian for saying that if one of the VT students had been packing heat, there would have been a lot fewer deaths.  This is true, but still politically dumb, and also a measure of Connolly's desperation.  He was sitting right next to Fimian, and it would almost have been worth losing the race to see Fimian pound the crap out of that little rodent.

Obama to Philly: 'I need 20,000 doors knocked on'

President Barack Obama  was greeted by more than 1,500 cheering students and volunteer canvassers at a Saturday rally for fellow Democrats in Pennsylvania, where he urged the young crowd to go to the polls Tuesday and encourage their friends and neighbors to do the same.

Hundreds spread out across Philadelphia afterward to knock on doors and pass out literature.

"Coming to a rally isn't the hard part," Obama told the crowd at Temple University. "I need 20,000 doors knocked on."

195 Please tell me more.

People I'm talking to in the Fairfax part of the district (which is what Fimian is going to struggle in) are telling me that over the past one to two weeks things have shifted heavily against Connolly and that Fimian is now expected to carry the Fairfax part of the district, perhaps easily. If he gets (well frankly he can lose Fairfax very narrowly if his numbers are outstanding in PW, which is only 1/3 of the district) 52% or so in Fairfax he will win the district by around 55-56. It won't even be that close.

The DCCC made this the hill they chose to die on. They have poured $1 mil into the 11th in the final days of the campaign - the most they are putting in any district in the closing days. I have also heard that Van Hollen warned Connolly not to sit on his ass complacently months ago and Connolly did nothing. My guess is that they want to save him because 1) this district would probably be out of reach in a less Republican year with a D incumbent and 2) Connolly was the "president" of the 2008 Freshman Dem Class.

Suffice to say that absolutely nothing about American politics makes any sense. Left is right, up is down, and logic, fuggetaboudit. Lies are passed off as truth and the only thing anyone in Washington cares about is getting reelected.

Until this Tuesday, that is. Then we'll start to get some semblance of sanity back and put at least a few adults back in charge.

I think one of the reasons the Post editorial board hated McDonnell so much is because they were largely responsible for Deeds' primary victory. And as he went into the polling toilet in the summer they felt they had to protect themselves. Thus "McDonnell want to shackle women to steam pipes in the closet".

This is a candidate (Deeds) who had to discard 25,000 DEEDS for Governor bumper stickers because they forgot the god damn "Authorized by Creigh Deeds. Paid for by Deeds for Goveror" line.

Oh. Fun fact! The guy who ran Deeds campaign? He ran Ned Lamont (yeah that Ned Lamont's) losing campaign for CT-GOV Dem nomination this year.

Yeah but unfortunately we don't have the State Senate so we won't completely control it. Not that I think theyd do much to the 8th other than make it more Democratic anyway as to make it more Republican you'd have to compromise the 10th or 11th's.

my wife is still a registered dem, although she has no plans to vote for a dimocrat for a long long time.

She gets a call from the DCCC 2 days ago about pro-life candidates and how they are against women's rights aka (in the dim's minds) abortion rights.  My wife is pro-choice, but she is also a huge supporters of women's rights, respect for women. Attack on policies, fine, not on the women themselves.

She let them have it, yelled at them about Whitman being called a "whore", O'Donnell (who she doesn't even like) being subjected to disgusting sexist attacks.

I don't think the Dimocrats have a clue that millions of women, pro-choice women, have figured out just how disgustingly sexist the undemocratic party is. And then they try to scare women with this abortion stuff, when they attack women so vicously, especially when millions of them remember the 2008 primaries. And its only increasing the anger against dimocrats more from women voters.

Wouldn't be surprised if more women vote GOP than the demon's rats this year and in 2012 as well.

I read an analysis that women in general tend to be for the 'status quo' party rather than the fire eater party. In the New Deal era they tended to be R, in the Reagan Revolution D. Perhaps Obamas "Change" has caused them to shift again.

Chris in VA - reason #3 for Connelly getting the $1M from the DCCC - well, speculation here - is that Connelly and Van Hollen are buds from way back.

Van Hollen was a staffer on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee when Connelly was staff director (all under the "chairmanship" of Sen. Claiborne Pell - AKA "Well-born" or "Still-born" - an affable but utterly clueless doddering idiot, who used to button-hole his colleagues when Uri Geller came to visit him - oh yes, "Clay" was way into the occult, para-normal b.s. - "oh, you must drop by my office, Uri Geller will be there").

Chris actually worked for the late MD Sen. Mac Mathias most of that time, but I think he switched to committee staff towards the end.

Chris is much younger than Gerry, but it's hard to imagine there's not a bit of a stronger tie there than is normal among House Dems.  When I saw the info about the DCCC $1M, I could only roll my eyes.  Not only has the Beltway become a pernicious alternate universe, with a voracious umbilical stuck into our pockets, souls, and freedoms - the "inside baseball" is now SO inside that you almost have to have personally known these people for decades to understand how/why they do specific things.

One of the really depressing things about the derailment of the Democratic Party in the last 20 years is to see someone like Van Hollen, who was pretty reasonable and sharp back then, going along/joining in/actually supporting irresponsible, ridiculous nonsense that it is hard to imagine his older self accepting.
