Progressivism Can Only Be A Parasite
— Open Blogger

The Village.jpgImzy.com (Conceptualized)

Imzy has been described as a "social-justice kumbaya version of Reddit". I had never heard of it until dri posted a sidebar item announcing its demise after a little more than a year. And its investors took an $11 million bath.

Started by former fired Reddit Vice President Dan McComas, Imzy was built on the idea of "safe space". McComas said that he wanted to give users a "nice" place to have "nice" place to discuss "nice" things without "being harrassed." It was supposed to be "a community forum product that was heavily moderated so as to conform with social-justice norms."

In other words, it was an online version of The Village.

And it failed. Imzy was an enterprise set up along explicitly progressive lines, and it flopped.

I wondered why this progressive enterprise failed. Which led to wondering why most, if not all, progressive enterprises fail.

In order to better understanding this, I believe C.S. Lewis holds the key.

In his classic book Mere Christianity, Lewis spent some time explaining the nature of good and evil and the relationship each has with the other. He starts out by considering 'dualism', by which he means a philosphy wherein Good and Evil are two more or less equal powers in the universe that are at war with each other. Lewis, of course, rejects this view, and argues that it fails because evil really can't be a stand-alone entity, which is what 'dualism' would require:

Put it more simply still. To be bad, he must exist and have intelligence and will. But existence, intelligence and will are in themselves good. Therefore he must be getting them from the Good Power: even to be bad he must borrow or steal from his opponent. And do you now beg to see why Christianity has always said that the devil is a fallen angel? That is not a mere story for the children. It is a real recognition of the fact that evil is a parasite, not an original thing. The powers which enable evil to carry on are powers given it by goodness. All the things which enable a bad man to be effectively bad are in themselves good things-resolution, cleverness, good looks, existence itself. That is why Dualism, in a strict sense, will not work

I remember first reading this almost 40 years ago, and it just made so much sense. And still does. He touched on this theme in The Screwtape Letters. Here is Screwtape himself railing against God:

He's vulgar, Wormwood. He has a bourgeois mind. He has filled His world full of pleasures. There are things for humans to do all day long without His minding in the least - sleeping, washing, eating, drinking, making love, playing, praying, working, Everything has to be twisted before it's any use to us. We fight under cruel disadvantages. Nothing is naturally on our side.

(And I know this raises a question of why. That is, if the devil is borrowing strength from God just so he can sh* all over everything, why does God allow this to happen? This is an important question, but it is not my intent to go into it here. My point is merely to affirm the truth of what Lewis is saying, that it is impossible for evil to be anything other than a parasite. Evil can't really create anything new. Or, actually much of anything at all. )

And I think that progressivism's relationship to conservatism (AKA normal life) is exactly like evil's relation to good. Progressivism, like evil itself, is unoriginal, derivative, dependent, and basically parasitical. It can never be anything else. It is utterly dependent on something outside itself, usually something it was set up to oppose, in order to survive.

In other words, in order to spit in God's face, the devil must first be allowed to sit in His lap. Like the old USSR, which could only survive because of massive cash infusions from the West, and let's not forget how Lenin was forced to reinstate some aspects of capitalism in the 1920s in order to keep the entire country from going TU. And wonderfully progressive Sweden can only distribute generous welfare benefits to its surly and ungrateful immigrant population because of their dependence on North Sea oil and also because their defense during the Cold War was paid for by the United States.

Examples abound. French Revolution? Fail. Cuba? Fail. China? Massive fail. Innumerable little revolutionary socialist/commie collectives, syndicates, communes, conspiracies, claques, and movements? All fail.

Remember Air America, the progressive alternative to conservative talk radio that was supposed to take the world by storm, and put those evil reich-wingers in their place? Yeah, me neither.

The only progressive institutions that are operational didn't start out that way. Academia, the MSM, the Episcopalian Church, ESPN, the Nobel Prize Committee, the federal judiciary, AARP, all of those were simply co-opted by the progressives. Which is just more evidence that my thesis on the parasitical nature of evil (progressivism) is correct.

But, I could be wrong. Can anyone think of any counterexamples, any thriving progressive institution that started out that way and remain true to its progressive roots? I can't, but I always could've missed something.

OK, maybe Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream. I'll give you that one. And also those seedy little "alt-weekly" newspapers that every big city seems to have. Any others?

So Dan McComas blew it. He used the wrong business model. In order to establish a progressive hegemony, you just can't set one up from scratch because it will flop. No, he needed to have used the only progressive strategy that has thus far proved successful. To borrow the language and imagery of the inestimable Iowahawk, it goes like this:

1. Choose a target
2. Burrow in
3. Hollow it out
4. Wear its skin

And then walk around in it and demand respect.

McComas' failure should serve as a warning to all progressives wishing to acquire unlimited power, that is, just sit tight. That's all you have to do. O'Sullivan's First Law is on your side.

11 CS Lewis is one of my favorite writers. You misssed his best quote: "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." And he continues: They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will: to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals. Very very fitting in 2017, no??

While it utterly fails at tangible results that improve anything, the creep is still always one direction. A few years ago did you think the headlines of the day would be about which bathroom you choose? Now they're taken seriously.

23 My point is merely to affirm the truth of what Lewis is saying, that it is impossible for evil to be anything other than a parasite. Evil can't really create anything new. That's part of Tolkein's Middle-Earth mythology, too, which makes sense since one of the many things he cribbed from was Christianity. Anyway, at one point in The Lord of the Rings, there's a whole thing about how Sauron or Melgoth or Lord Douchebag the Really Evil (I forget which Great Evil, and as big a fan as I am, the names are kind of silly) or whoever made orcs and trolls as twisted copies or parodies of elves and ents, respectively. It's actually a pretty cool part of the worldbuilding. The other thing this made me think of is "The Revolution will eat its own" which was supposedly said about the French Revolution well before Robspierre was guillotined. But I guess the Left eating its own is different from organizations "evolving." Air America failed because it had no purpose-- it filled no niche that wasn't already filled to bursting. In conclusion, wow am I bored.

The thing with Ben and Jerry is that they were smart enough to sell out to eeeeevil multinational conglomerate Unilever long before their progressive jackassery built up to critical mass and killed the brand. Any success for BnJ over the nearly 20 years since then is almost certainly due to the economies of scale that a huge corporation can command.

33 C.S. Lewis was brilliant in so many ways. If it were possible to argue people into Christianity, he would be the one that did it. "Progressivism" has always been with us, its ultimately selfish and childish, that part of us that always has been there wanting the easy road, to be treated nice, and to think that if you "live the way you want the world to be" then things will be better and we can fix everything. Its deeply arrogant, presuming we can fix it all and make paradise. Its childish in its understanding of the world. "Progressivism" tries to make a way where you don't ever have to grow, or change, or strive, or face difficulty, like kindergarden. It is an attempt to make people who are odd and strange and offbeat feel normal by "de-normalizing" ordinary people, declaring them "privileged."

44 Progressivism is inherently coercive, for openers. It's Will to Power is inherently corrosive of traits like honesty and openness. And it leads to planned economies, which are always sub-optimal at actually getting things done, and which impede true economic progress (which so often depends on exploiting unplanned for discoveries).

The same thing spreads from institution to institution absorbing it to its cause, and taking little of any pre-existing instrumentality of the structure itself. It refuses to learn, it just wants to burrow the hollow academics of Marxism from structure to structure. And the goal is power. Power to override the discretion of people who are "wrong" and institute the "proper" order. They get away with doing this by telling each group what it wants to hear, out of earshot of the others (e.g., eco-nuts and blue collar union men). But that's impossible when you are broadcasting. So Air America had to broadcast pablum that engaged none of their constituencies, and bored everyone. It was also very NY-centric, at least in the short time I listened to it. 58 Well of course "progressives" are the dread lampreys of existence... they are not for anything, but merely against most everything- in order to exist they need to oppose and take, as they never had and never will have anything to PROpose and give. To combat this, she aped the worst people in the freaking world and staged a photo holding the severed head of a sitting US President- in short, this cockroach took a vile dump on the sensibilities of about 60 million or so voters in this country. Identity through the opposition of something better than herself. Not identity based on intrinsic value, or ability, or admirable trait. In short, a leech. A parasite. A diseased tick on the body of humanity. But oh...artistry. Satire. Uh huh. Can only hope this miserable hack bitch lives a long, unpleasant remainder of life either being unknown, or recognized and actively/loudly hated.

Again, though, those are regressive businesses that have co-opted otherwise good, normal things.

Ice cream is good.  People like it.

Capitalism is good. It raises people out of poverty.

Newspapers are good (or were, before they all tilted left of Castro). They provide information and opinion.

People don't buy Ben and Jerry's for the proggy politics; they buy it because it tastes good.  And Ben and Jerry can make those proggy statements because selling tasty ice cream has made them enough money that they can afford to take any hit in sales they MIGHT endure from doing so.

And as for the alternative newspapers, well, they saw a niche in the market and they pounced.  Even if they're free, that's still employing a capitalist idea to disseminate a product.  You might not get money, but you get a voice.  Sometimes that's all you need to get the REAL prize: power.

Coming up with a new version of a business type with a well established and proven viability is hardly a progressive triumph. I think they kept their salary range within a multiple from high to low. That's not a terrible idea, and if you start with the baseline budget for for salary cost and can manage to pay everyone something that falls within a range that works for the marketplace, then you are still playing the capitalism game as far as I can tell.

61 I could give two ***** about a businesses politics most of the time.

87 "But, I could be wrong. Can anyone think of any counterexamples, any thriving progressive institution that started out that way and remain true to its progressive roots? I can't, but I always could've missed something." Generally speaking, I think the main issue here is that progressivism has defined itself as the striving towards something but never put very much thought in exactly what they're striving towards. If you're going to say that the way that we've organized society now is bad, suboptimal, unfair, whatever, you need to tell me exactly what your perfect society should look like. Progressivism, like most prominent philosophesr since Descartes, rejects the idea of an objective good, so they can't state a positive case for their position. It's never "society should be organized like this:" it's always "we shouldn't be doing this, it's not fair." Because of that, progressivism just becomes a vehicle for socialism, since at least that is an actual idea of how society should be, and on the surface, it has the same qualities that progressives say would "fix" society today. Never mind the fact that socialism doesn't actually do what it says it's goals are.

89 C.S. It is an attempt to make people who are odd and strange and offbeat feel normal by "de-normalizing" ordinary people, declaring them "privileged." Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 31, 2017 12:43 PM (39g3+) Sympathy for the Oddball, the Insane, Perverts, and Criminals is a standing feature of Progressivism, because they are the battering rams of Progressivism. They are the "proof" that Progressivism works as all human behavior is malleable. So, you can be whatever you want to be and do whatever you want to do as long a you have proper guidance by the proper leaders. And guess who those leaders are?

The problem the left always has is that they grossly overestimate their numbers. They're very loud and well-represented, but not very numerous. Rush Limbaugh did well because there's millions of conservative or at least right-middle people out there who had no voice. And he was really entertaining and fun to listen to.

Really interesting point. Never thought about it that way.

I'd add "deviant" along to odd, strange and offbeat, since the latter terms are more harmless, whereas a lot of things that can, in the long run, hurt society [like pedophilia] are in line to be normalized.

96 Modern liberalism is built in specific opposition to reality. It views reality as an oppressive construct maintained by the belief in it by some critical mass of people (whether it is most people, some people, or even one person "bad thinking" varies per liberal).

As such, it is no surprise that the more in tune with liberal thought an organization is, the less well it will work. They are designed that way.

Imagine, for example, two villages - one lifted from say 1776 America and on built on leftwing positions on the issues of the say re gender identity, multiculturalism, socialism etc...but both villages with 1776 era technology. Does anyone believe that the leftwing village would survive a generation without changing its policies to match the American village?

And even looking at your counter example of Ben and Jerry's, they certainly mouth leftwing talking points but while in fact enacting non-leftwing policies. B&J has a marketing department, competes for markets, suppliers and employees, etc.

Once they achieve a goal, they have 3 more goals to move toward, always pushing more and more radicalism. My mom brought up something yesterday on the phone. She said its amazing how nice and polite and friendly everyone is in shops and out in public now. And then she said what I thought was very interesting: she said its kind of sinister. That these people weren't nice, but they were trained to act that way, hiding what they really are. That people like that can change very quickly. And we've seen it. People shouting Love Trumps Hate, then hitting you with a bicycle lock. People saying they love everyone, then waving a bloody head around.

105 So, if someone is FORCED to be good, by threat of violence... is he actually Good? As he has not freely chosen that path?[I/] There's a bit in the MST3K movie Jack Frost (the one with Baba Yaga) where the hero, having been cured by Grandfather Mushroom with the head of a bear (well, a horrible bear mask), does various good deeds and nothing works. Then he notices something, says to himself he should fix it, and then magic happens and he no longer has the head of bear. The comment was along the lines of, "So talking about a good deed is better than actually doing it?" I assume the curse was motivation-dependent, not deed-dependent, but of course the movie didn't *say* that. Regarding the names of evil characters-- my favorite is probably from the Disney cartoon Dave the Barbarian. It was a broad fantasy parody, and reasonably amusing. Anyway, the Big Bad was a pig named Chuckles, the Silly Piggy. No one took him seriously. Maybe you had to be there.

113 OM's idea also can be applied to explain why the progressives end up on the wrong side of literally everything. Because they exist as a corruption of good ideas, they are by definition excluded from even by chance ever ending up on the good side of an argument. Hence the internal conflicts that we see--the preference of transgender bathroom and changing room policies despite the obvious harm to girls. The preference of Islam to Judaism and Christianity, in plain opposition to homosexuals and Western Civ as a whole. Because they must, must take the stance that is opposite to the good, regardless of where that leaves them in terms of a coherent philosophy. And yeah, I think we can make a 1:1 correlation between progressivism and evil.

131 Anybody ever see that movie, "Wholly Moses" ?  When I think of the Devil, I think of John Ritter in that movie.  Just an average angel who got the short straw, reluctantly toiling along at the unpleasant job he got stuck with.

I like Anne Rice's portrayal too.  Poor, hated Memnoch the misunderstood angel, defying God on behalf of man who never gets to tell his side of the story.  Probably misguided but his his heart was in the right place. And his intentions were good, at least at first.  Also doing a thankless job he really doesn't take any joy in anymore but excels in it nonetheless.

The best part was the URL of their website: "coffeepartyusa.org," i.e., "cpusa.org." There was no apparent reason to include the USA part except to make it an obscure inside reference to the cognoscenti, something the Reds love to do (as I'm sure zombie will attest).

139 Really interesting point. Never thought about it that way. That's all "privilege" theory is; its an attempt to make normal people seem unjustly elite and normalize the bizarre, outsider, and perverted. It started in the 1980s with a feminist who wrote about male 'privilege' in American society, because they were more comfortable and fit in better: normal. Lunatic radicals grabbed the idea and ran with it for every situation that involves normality and typical American culture. There's nothing 'privileged' in being ordinary. Its just not awkward and uncomfortable like being out of the ordinary. I'm a Christian role playing gamer, I've been the oddball my entire life. I'm at peace with that, its who I am. People need to learn to deal with their life and problems instead of whining to the world to change so they don't feel bad any longer. That's the crap your 2 year old pulls screaming and thrashing on the floor. We're supposed to grow out of it.

"Progressivism" tries to make a way where you don't ever have to grow, or change, or strive, or face difficulty, like kindergarden. It is an attempt to make people who are odd and strange and offbeat feel normal by "de-normalizing" ordinary people, declaring them "privileged."

Rush frequently hammers on the theme that feminism is really a hangout for women who have otherwise failed to succeed at being female. I think he's right. There's every bit as much competition among women to outpace their co-gendered half of humanity as there is for men, and they don't all make it. Feminism is a victim-based fallback for them to justify to themselves why they lost.

170 I guess there are all sorts of ways to sort this stuff. I have a hard time with good/evil, because I think essentially none of us are equipped to judge the balance of either in any other person. We can judge actions, and we can even judge societies' tendencies, and decide a community is good/evil based on a preponderance of actions. I just don't think that translates into individual character, or even explains individual actions. It's a fools game to seek to pass judgment on people, because we NEVER have enough information to do so. And how this relates to the failure of leftist enterprises... well, I must admit this is going over my head.

238 One question Dennis Prager asks that gets interesting responses is this (paraphrasing from memory): OK, if you don't believe in the 10 Commandments, you reject religious underpinnings of what is considered societal behavior, then on what basis do you predicate killing is wrong? Posted by: Lizzy at May 31, 2017 01:11 PM (NOIQH) I will presume you mean murder rather than killing. There are multiple answers to that: Let's start with this: Humans have innate value and no person has a right to deprive another of matters of value unwillingly. How about this: Each individual has a right to bodily integrity. Bodily integrity is both necessary and sufficient to identify a person as an individual. Murder is an unwilling violation of bodily integrity and thus must be prohibited. Then there's this: Humanity is marked by sentience, intelligence and free will. Murder is a violation of free will and, thus, a rejection of humanity. That's a question that people who have never bothered to think through any philosophic or religious questions at all think is a gotcha question and Prager is smarter than that. Bluntly, I think less of him for knowing he does this.

The more I study him, the more respectful I become. Not only was the Left in Spain absolutely batshit, but Franco shrewdly allowed the fanatics in his camp to go volunteer to get killed on the Eastern Front, all while having his diplomats quietly reassure the UK and the USA. Repositioning all his military in the Pyrenees Mountains, as if he expected Hitler to stab him in the back at any moment, was also a good move.

279 It's strange that so many of the truly successful stories of capitalism ends up espousing marxist ideals ONLY after having made their financial nut. Leftism protects their stash especially if they can prove their leftism enough to become the left's darlings. I don't see anyone on the left wanting to dismantle Disney or Amazon. It's a business plan.

281 149 Those seedy alt-prog "newspapers" survived on ads for strip clubs and outcall hookers. Legalizing pot has given them a whole new revenue stream.

282 Planned Parenthood. However, as a business enterprise it would never survive. As a left-wing charity it is immortal. Also, Ben & Jerry's actually makes good ice cream that turns a profit. The hippy "cause" aspect is just a front.

283 Shakespeare would have enjoyed writing a play about Feanor.

284 ...my father hates everything about me and every couple of months decides he has to let me know about it in detail, and I'm STILL not a progtard. Posted by: Hikaru at May 31, 2017 01:40 PM (luj3F) Sorry to hear that. Today I was thinking if time-travel were possible, then I could be my own father. An improvement over what did happen would be relatively easy.

285 Great post!!!

286 Great post. Still confused about how a screenshot from "The Prisoner," about getting to why a spy abruptly quit, supports a post about liberal politics as parasitism. But it makes me want to see the series anyway. I like the look of that wacky town.

287 ACLU?

Or is that merely a parasite?

288 Thanks so much for adding the Lewis passage. I've never read that....having got lost in the wardrobe, so to speak...but I will now. The steady "progressive" attack we have witnessed the last forty+ years follows Lewis' logic quite nicely as they have used the US Constitution to subvert US society, "fundamentally transforming" what has arguably been one of the few national sources of GOOD into a shade of its former self. Fallen angels indeed. But what the Lewis quote you include does not answer is, does he believe these evil *&^%s can be destroyed root and branch? I guess I'll need to read the whole thing to find out. Until then, here's hoping.

289 Man am I sorry I missed this thread.

I would love to discuss the why of why evil is allowed. It's great stuff.

If you think of evil as the irrational choice away from objective good it makes sense. That also defines the left.

290 Watching the videos of the Imzy.com founders on TechCrunch blather about how wonderful their SJW-safe-space community version of Reddit would be - knowing it failed miserably - is a cocktail of heroin, blowjobs, and cash with whipped cream.  Seeing Jessica Moreno (with her arm & leg tatts, cool-geek glasses, etc) standing next to a wall in the Imzy offices with a giant ruler painted at the corner - like a parent uses to measure a child's growth - is the perfect metaphor for their childish business model.

291 If we examine the CONTEXT of DJT's famous tweet , It's obvious that " covfefe " means " MSM bullshit ", Trump knows that only a a powerful set of neologisms can save us from the Stupidity Buildup of the progs .

292 Late to the party - but Sweden? North Sea oil? Methinks you got that confused with Norway. But...Sweden has a very open, free-trading economy. (President Trump, a man who thinks economic freedom is a sick concept, would be very much opposed to such a thing.) This is where they get their money from. However, Sweden also has a massive problem: the money they forcibly confiscate from its citizenry in order to pamper them and allow them a perpetual adolescence discourages them from having kids. And, as they are the future taxpayers, the government finds itself in a conundrum: it can't afford to pamper people, but at the same time, they can't talk to its citizenry like adults and explain to them that the government has to get out of the babying business. So, Sweden does something else instead: Sweden begins to import taxpayers. (THIS is why Sweden, among others, has unfettered immigration...and if this leads to changes in society that the voting public finds uncomfortable or problematic, the government says "so be it".) Therefore, Sweden is STILL a failure.
