"Peace Activists" Attack Israeli Soldiers Attempting to Divert Blockade Runners
— Gabriel Malor

Word filtered out last night that there had been casualties, including some deaths, on the pointless, Turkey-backed flotilla attempting to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza. The "peace activists" had been warned that they must divert to Ashdod where the supplies they intended to deliver would be searched for weapons and then trucked to Gaza.

They refused, choosing to make a political statement rather than deliver much-needed food and medical supplies to Gaza. They got their wish. The IDF released this video (embedded below) of the so-called peace activists attacking IDF soldiers as they board one of the ships. They attacked with guns, knives, and improvised weapons.

According to initial reports, these events resulted in the deaths of nine demonstrators and seven naval personnel were injured, some from gunfire and some from various other weapons. Two of the soldiers are moderately wounded and the remainder sustained light injuries. All of the injured, Israelis and foreigners have been evacuated by helicopter to hospitals in Israel.
Reports from IDF forces on the scene are that it seems as if part of the participants onboard the ships were planning to lynch the forces.

The flotilla is now under IDF control and headed for Ashdod. The peace activists got their PR message, at the pointless cost of nine lives. The Gazans will eventually get their supplies anyay. The Israeli blockade will continue. And the Israelis will get another scolding from the "international community."

Later: About this whole "international waters" bit that the activists are bleating about, it doesn't make a difference where the ships were seized.

Even assuming that the activists are correct and that the ships were taken in international waters, there's no "safe" spot for blockade runners. Israel has no duty to wait until its own waters are breached, not when the blockade runners have announced their intentions and set sail.

Israel gave the activists every opportunity to turn aside, both before they assembled and after the made a run for the blockade. The activists aren't bothering to pretend that they were planning to do anything other than challenge the Israeli blockade. They can hardly complain when the Israelis take them at their word.

35 Maybe Israel will finally understand the corner it is being pushed into?

This is why Israel should not have given even an inch to demands from the Indonesian Imbecile.  If he demanded that Israel stop building in Jerusalem, Israel should have ramped up building in Jerusalem, and started tearing down every single illegal, or near-illegal arab house there.  If the US complained, Israel should have quadrupled efforts.

There is no way out of this for Israel.  It's all or nothing, now, as the US has joined the arabs and the Europeans in trying to destroy the state.  That is the situation.

You're correct, but this won't matter.  The game is set and Israel is the pre-ordained bad guy.

This is why disengagement was such a stupid policy.  The world is spinning out of control and Israel needed to keep a cap on Fakestinians until somewhere else in the world blew up and the bigger conflagration got hot.

Europe and Washington are now looking to embargo Israel and the US, under the Indonesian Imbecile, even wants to try and implement a blockade, at some point.  The Precedent is going to push Israel until they have no choices left, but true fury or surrender and death.  Israel should have understood this scenario long before Nov 4th, 2008, as it was all easily predictable.

This is why I've been saying that the US and Europe are going to go absolutely apeshit when Israel hits Iran (even though the US and Europe are forcing Israel to take care of Iran).  This is the biggest setup in world history and will be one of the ugliest.

We'll see how much Israelis will stick to their "never again" claims.  They haven't shown any seriousness about that, up until now, but this is the endgame happening.

Ehud Barak came out and said that of the six ships only one the 'Mavi Marmara' seemed to harbor extremists bent on violent confrontation with the IDF. The other five ships and its occupants cooperated fully. How much you want to bet the Mavi Marmara had weapons on it for Hamas and the other five ships were decoys?

The Turks I've known have been cool -- but they are wussified secular Istanbul types, and those types aren't running Turkey anymore.

Turkey is going to be our enemy soon. We should start preparing now. At best we'll be able to buy their elites off like Egypt and the Saudis -- but the Turkish people are sprinting to the jihadi exit door.

The whole Ataturk secular revolution is being overthrown. The muzzies even claim Ataturk was a secret Jew and his revolution was an anti-islamic plot. Crazy conspiracy, but an effective way to destroy Turkish support for their founder-hero.

Yep.  And one of the main reasons that Turkey is in such a terrible spot is because the EU demanded that Turkey change its Constitution to take supreme power away from the secular military (who used to be charged with keeping the islamists out of power).  The EU demanded that Turkey abandon this structure of having the military as the supreme governmental power in order for Turkey to be even considered for EU membership - which was a joke since the EU never intended on admitting Turkey, anyway.  I agree with the EU in refusing to accept Turkey, but their desire to muck around with the govenrmental structure of Turkey in the process (just for laughs, I think) shows, once again, what imbecilic dipshits the Europeans are.

That Constitutional change was forced around 2003 and Turkey has been slipping into the islamists' hands ever since.  Now, Turkey is very clearly on the other side.  Thanks Europe.  Another monumental screw-up that you guys have brought to the world ... even as the EU, itself, is dying a pathetic death.  Typical Europe.  Yep ...

75 You're correct, but this won't matter. The game is set and Israel is the pre-ordained bad guy. Yes. I agree. The point is to get it in the record for future historians to see. Because of what is coming next. Israel is guilty when she defends herself, guilty when she doesn't. It is way past time to make the crimes fit the punishment. This is why disengagement was such a stupid policy. The world is spinning out of control and Israel needed to keep a cap on Fakestinians until somewhere else in the world blew up and the bigger conflagration got hot. I disagree. In fact, given the 'palis' propensity to fuck up a good thing, you know it was only a matter of time before they fucked this up. Cast lead was a good thing, but not prepared and handled in a media saavy manner. I argue that disengagement is exactly the right tactic to take, as it makes the case that 'palis' cannot be trusted to build their own state, and that Israeli concessions are not important to peace. Once these points are made, and that there is a hostile state lobbing rockets right next to you, on land you quit to provide concessions for peace and confidence building maneuvers, it gets real easy to say "no" to any future concessions and confidence building maneuvers. But we shouldn't be interdicting ships. Let them come in, let the terror state do what it wants, and if they keep lobbing rockets, destroy them, with extreme prejudice, and absolutely no mercy. Europe and Washington are now looking to embargo Israel and the US, under the Indonesian Imbecile, even wants to try and implement a blockade, at some point. The Precedent is going I agree, and I expect Turkey to use its NATO membership to some effect here. to push Israel until they have no choices left, but true fury or surrender and death. Israel Israel has no choice but to defend itself. If this defense pisses off others, so be it. But defend itself it must, and explain itself it should, loudly, frequently, and without apology. should have understood this scenario long before Nov 4th, 2008, as it was all easily predictable. Yeah. It was predictable. Obami has caused more damage to US allies than Carter. He has grabbed the brass ring of worst president ever, and is trying to dig some new lows here. I don't expect a blocking of the inevitable UNSC condemnation. This is why I've been saying that the US and Europe are going to go absolutely apeshit when Israel hits Iran (even though the US and Europe are forcing Israel to take care of Iran). This is the biggest setup in world history and will be one of the ugliest. Plausible deniability. Brought to you by an imbecile and his cohorts. What me worry? We'll see how much Israelis will stick to their "never again" claims. They haven't shown any seriousness about that, up until now, but this is the endgame happening. Posted by: progressoverpeace at May 31, 2010 12:22 PM (Qp4DT) The've been telegraphing the manuever long enough. No one should be surprised when it happens. I believe it to be inevitable. Gazastan aka Hamastan is a lost cause. We should simply interdict all land based routes. If they want to build an airport and a seaport, let them. If they want to import weapons, let them. If they lob a single scrap of paper over the fence, never mind an offensive weapon, we should destroy them. Completely, and utterly. There are no innocents in Gaza.

Which makes you wonder. Were the other five decoy ships or did the Mavi Mamara interject itself into the convoy to take advantage of the confusion ? I'll bet that ship was loaded down with rockets and weapons for Hamas. However, the Palis and the MFM will just say the IDF planted them there.

Yep.  Ataturk, who loved islam, understood that islam was, at its core, a political ideology that would take over any nation that allowed it.  It's funny that a devoted muslim like Ataturk understood the threat that islam poses to any modern society and structured his nation to always be on its toes against this natural encroachment that islam would attempt, but modern liberals would call Ataturk anti-islamic and a bigot.

Whenever I speak about islam with brain-dead lefties, I always bring up Turkey (though they usually bring it up first, as their example of how an Islamic nation can have self-rule and remain a non-threat - LOL) and I explain to them what amazing restrictions Ataturk knew had to be put on islam in order for the nation to live.  Needless to say, lefties never seem to know jack shit about Turkey or Ataturk.

But, I love when they refer to Turkey as the best example of muslim self-rule and then I explain to them that the Turkish military is the ultimate power, charged with dissolving any governments that are too islamic ... though that power is now gone (thanks to the EU).

Lefties are a cancer that will kill any society unlucky enough to have them and not keeping them in their sandboxes, where they can't hurt anyone.

87 They need better tactics. The video looks like a zombie movie. And now we learn the commandos got dropped into the muzzie swarm armed with paintball guns!

I don't know what the better tactics could be. Some non-lethal weapon that can clear an area of the boat of people so the commandos can drop down. Pain beams, sonic weapons, water hoses, something.

Personally I have no problem with them using lethal weapons to clear an entry zone, but it's bad PR, so they need a non-lethal something that can be deployed from the helo or a patrol ship that can clear space for the commandos to land.

Dropping into a swarm of wanna-be martyrs clearly didn't work.

96 I disagree.

Posted by: kranky at May 31, 2010 12:40 PM (80GjT)

I have to strongly disagree.  The problem is that there are about 5 different major war tracks going on in the world, right now, and the race for each of them is not to be the first to go "true hot" (as in all-out fighting, real war style).  But, everyone is waiting for some other guy to go hot and then they will finally unload.  But, no one wants to be the first and take the blame from the rest.

Israel should have paid special attention to this situation, as Israel going hot (against either Fakestinians or the Iranians or Hezbollah {I would remind you how much ridiculous restraint Israel showed in the 2006 "war", putting the whole effort on hold for a week to allow everyone and his brother to escape north - a total joke} or Syria ...) is what the rest of the world is waiting for.  Everyone will blame world instability (and the attendant monetary instability) on Israel and that will put Israel in the worst situation possible.

Israel's main task, post-9/11 was to keep as much of a cap on the Fakestinians until one of the other hot spots in the world went truly hot (India-Pakistan would have the most advantageous for everyone) and then Israel could have done what they needed to do.  But, Israel raced itself to the front of the line, just as dealing with Iran was obviously going to come down on them, in addition to everything else, and that was, in my opinion, truly poor strategy.  This was a race to let someone else go hot first, and Israel kept putting itself at the front of that line, even though Israel should ahve understood that they will never be allowed to defend themselves.  It is true that this problem was not the same with Bush in the White House, as the US would still be an Israeli ally, but Israel had to understand that, even in the situation, it was a race to let someone else open up first.

Further, the Gaza disengagement made no sense, because you don't do gift-giving like that in the arab world.  You don't give anything free.  Nothing.  Sharon should have understood this, as he was a strategic genius, but he seems to have lost his mind in the last couple years of his leadership.  You never give freebies to arabs.  That never helps the situation, but only inflames it, and this was done just as the world was put in this deadly race to wait for someone else to go into a hot war - and not a war like we've been fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, but a real war where restraint comes in a far, far, distant second to survival and the need to win.

I've sailed all my life and you have the right to protect your vessal in international waters from anyone. Isarael also has a right to protect itself from anyone whether in international waters or not. When you do it in international waters though you have to be ready for the consequences of international laws.

If it would turn out that this ship did not have arms on board then Israel is going to be dinged for it. Hopefully it was in their waters, if not they should have waited IMO.

I think the Mavi was the whole point of the flotilla.  The other five were for all the peaceniks, the useful idiots.  They were hoping either for this confrontation or that, after inspecting the other five, that the IDF would simply let the sixth go through.  Knowing who Hamas is, they couldn't resist having heavy weapons on the Mavi.

I can’t decide if they are going to find weapons on that ship or not. It would seem they would have known that they wouldn’t succeed in getting through the blockade, so was this just a PR stunt to make Israel look bad? Or, are they stupid enough to think that they could succeed and so did have weapons on board? Of course I mean crates of weapons, obviously they had other weapons on board since they fought the IDF.

And what was their intention in fighting the IDF? Supposedly they are “peace” activists, attacking the soldiers doesn’t square with that narrative very well. Was their end game just to provoke the IDF and make them look bad, or did they actually think they would succeed in their attack and make it through the blockade?

Oh, what the hell..

Under the Obama administration, America may be becoming a third world country.

BUT....under the Obama administration, America has become NUMBER ONE IN ISSUING APOLOGIES. So much so that Obama has ordered yet another federal bureaucratic department called Department of Homeland Apologies.

Obama will also issue a proposal to congress to replace the traditional National
Anthem of the Unites States to the classic rendition of Brenda Lee's 'I'm
Sorry.'

Will all liberals stand up, place your hand over your heart and sing along with
Brenda?  The new liberal National Anthem of the United States:

I'm sorry, so sorry
That I was such a fool
I didn't know
Love could be so cruel
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Uh-oh
Oh, yes
You tell me mistakes
Are part of being young
But that don't right
The wrong that's been done
[Spoken:]
(I'm sorry) I'm sorry
(So sorry) So sorry
Please accept my apology
But love is blind
And I was to blind to see
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Uh-oh
Oh, yes
You tell me mistakes
Are part of being young
But that don't right
The wrong that's been done
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Uh-oh
Oh, yes
I'm sorry, so sorry
Please accept my apology
But love was blind
And I was too blind to see
(Sorry)

161 I expect the plan was "Let's sail into the blockade and show the world how mean those Jew bastards are."

But on the high seas, when IDF commandos started rappelling down onto the ship, the old reflex kicked in.  "Kill the Jews!"

168 My personal take is that it all comes down to status. The libs have done a superlative job of "branding" their ideology as a badge of high status.

That's why you see libs doing that creepy agreeing-with-each-other stuff at social events: two or more libs have a whole conversation consisting of nothing but stuff they agree on. It's a way of establishing status and membership in the high-status group.

That's why they get so infuriated when we challenge the basis of their ideology. It's not just a political dispute: it's a strike at the core of their identity and the basis of their self-regard. "If being a liberal doesn't make me one of the Cool People, what'll I do?" For them it's far more comfortable to attack the source of the Bad Thoughts than to admit they could be valid.

You could transplant the state of Israel out of the ME and onto a newly created island in the middle of nowhere in the ocean, and the next day it would be surrounded by angry Muslim nations looking to eradicate it.

Israel will only get peace through victory.  I wish we would do the right thing and overtly support them as they do their thing.

On our local news site all but a couple of comments are anti-Israel and commenter after commenter keeps saying it is time the US stop supplying Israel with money to hurt the poor Palestinians. There was of course the obligatory “I am Jewish but…” comment as well. And one about how this person is backpacking in South America and has met so many crazy Israelis because they all have to serve in the military and it makes them unbalanced.

Is Israel in a position where if the US stopped giving them money they would be crippled, or are they fairly self sufficient now? I wish Israel could just tell the US to shove it.

Even if they could go it alone economically once their ravenous neighbors got the greenlight from Washington that the U.S. would not aid Israel in any way, shape or form in a conflict their so called peaceful and oppressed neighbors in the Middle East would descend on them like vultures.

US aid to Israel is now only about 1% of Israel's GDP, and Israel has weathered the current worldwide economic downturn much better than most advanced countries.  Although it could do without the money, Israel does still rely on purchasing US weapons and other military equipment.  Of course, the US in turn relies on Israel for military technology, intelligence, and civilian technology; and if the US-Israeli relationship were ruptured, the US would no longer be able to pressure Israel to refrain from selling technology to countries like China.

Interesting comment PGiS.

In recent days, the international media, particularly in Europe and the Mideast, has been full of stories about activist boats sailing to Gaza carrying desperately-needed humanitarian aid and building materials.

The BBC World Service even led its world news broadcasts with this story at one point over last weekend. (The BBC yesterday boasted that its global news audience has now risen to 220 million persons a week, making it by far the biggest news broadcaster in the world.)

Yet the BBC and other media fail to report on the fancy new restaurants and swimming pools of Gaza, or about the wind surfing competitions on Gaza beaches, or the Strip's crowded shops and markets.

No, this would spoil their agenda. Playing the manipulative game of the BBC is easy. If I had their vast taxpayer funded resources, I too could produce reports about parts of London, Manchester and Glasgow and make it look as though there is a humanitarian catastrophe throughout the UK. I could produce the same effect by selectively filming seedy parts of Paris and Rome and New York and Los Angeles too.

Of course there is poverty in Gaza. There is poverty in parts of Israel too. (When was the last time a foreign journalist based in Israel left the pampered lounge bars and restaurants of the King David and American Colony hotels in Jerusalem and went to check out the slum-like areas of southern Tel Aviv? Or the hard-hit Negev towns of Netivot or Rahat?)

But the way the BBC and other prominent Western news media are deliberately misleading global audiences and systematically creating the false impression that people are somehow starving in Gaza, and that it is all Israel's fault, can only serve to increase hatred for the Jewish state - which one suspects was the goal of many of the editors and reporters involved in the first place.

If you drop by the Roots Club in Gaza, according to the Lonely Planet guidebook for Gaza and the West Bank, you can dine on steak au poivre and chicken cordon bleu.

The restaurant's website in Arabic gives a window into middle class dining and the lifestyle of Hamas officials in Gaza.

And here it is in English, for all the journalists, UN types and NGO staff who regularly frequent this and other nice Gaza restaurants but don't tell their readers about them.

Please take a look at the pictures on the above website. They are not the kind of things you see in The New York Times or CNN or in Newsweek, whose international edition last week had one of the most disgracefully misleading stories about Gaza I have ever seen, portraying it in terms which were virtually reminiscent of Hiroshima after a nuclear blast.

In case anyone doubts the authenticity of this video (which is up on the club's own website I linked), I just called the club in Gaza City and had a nice chat with the manager who proudly confirmed business is booming and many Palestinians and international guests are dining there.

While Western media, misled by corrupt and biased NGOs, continue to report on a "humanitarian catastrophe" in Gaza, the Palestinian Ma'an news agency reports on the Olympic-size swimming pool that opened in Gaza last week.

How does an area that claims to be starved of water and building materials and depends on humanitarian aid build an Olympic size swimming pool and create a luxury lifestyle for some while others are forced to live in abject poverty as political pawn refugees?

Netanya does not have a municipal Olympic pool. Neither does Ashkelon, or Sderot. Gaza City is part of the Palestinian territory operated by the Islamic terror regime, Hamas. Netanya has been hit by repeated Palestinian suicide attacks, car bombings, and terrorist gunmen that have left over fifty of its citizens dead and more than three hundred injured. The Palestinians receive record amounts of international funding. The victims of Palestinian terror get nothing.

For one his justification that you can't be attacked if you are the one boarding someone elses ship has nothing to do with international waters.

And I'm just using the same justification he is for why you can't call it an attack or condemning them.  The boats don't belong to the Israelis, the town doesn't belong to the US Soldiers.  Their objective in both circumstances is the same.

sim, the other thing is Israel  provides most of the aid to Gaza herself, but you won't here that from the left or the MFM because it makes them look good. These so called humanitarian shipments are designed with the express purpose of drawing the IDF into a confrontation. The bottom line is all of the aid goes through Hamas to dispense how they see fit so most of it doesn't even reach the people who desperately need it the most, its a top down operation to them with it being used to control and gain influence over the populace.

Also, a few weeks ago Hamas bulldozed several buildings in Gaza and made hundreds homeless, because it said that it owned the land and people illegally built on it. You didnt see that in the MFM either because the evil juice weren't the ones doing it..

That those fucking refugee camps have been there for decades speaks volumes.  They're "refugees" from their own fucking government.  That's what gets me about all the complaints about "Israel expanding the settlements"; maybe the fucking palis should start building homes for the people they purportedly care about instead of purchasing offensive weapons.

Don't forget power too.  Remember a couple years back when Israel cut the power on them, so the Pali's government needed to hold their meetings by candlelight.  They even managed to get a photograph of the meeting released, with the window blinds pulled so the bright midday sun couldn't shine in to provide light.

196 Of course Israel has every right to use lethal force in boarding Turkish flagged vessels in International waters because....... Well because they are Jews and they are God's chosen people. So let me get this straight. We would have no right to board a container vessel in international waters if we suspected a nuclear weapon was on it and headed to an American port, we should just let the vessel dock first?

If you disagree with that then you would have to agree that the Israelis were trying to prevent arms from reaching Gaza to murder their people. You do realize if this was indeed an aid shipment that it could have just went overland don't you?

Ahhh, but then it would get inspected and that defeats the whole purpose.

Petraeus, himself, increased the risk to American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan by stating this.

If Petraeus' strategy included Israel laying down and committing national suicide then it was a strategy of incomprehensible stupidity, especially given the fact that EVERYONE knows that Israel has been tasked by the world with taking out the Iranian threat.  The world has set Israel up for that and they are going to go in for the kill right after Israel takes Iran out.

213 Palestinian virus warning

A new virus has been detected that you may want to take precautions against. Be careful, if you try to solve this virus problem, you will be castigated in the media and by the UN. This is the Palestinian Virus - a virus that settles in your PC, claims it was there before your PC was built or Bill Gates was born, then demands parts of your hard drive.

If you want the virus to leave you and your PC alone, you can try to give the virus the hard drive space it wants, but it will refuse the deal and start killing data on your computer.

Some people have suggested a solution for this virus problem is to give the virus its own PC. As stated above, this virus has been known to refuse the offer. Other nearby PCs wont take the virus either, even if the virus is compatible with the other computers. The virus seams to want nothing less than to take over your entire computer and with the removal and destruction of all your data.

Software based anti-virus solutions have been proposed, but so far only hardware solutions have had any impact. The only solution we have been able to determine that may work is physical removal of the virus from your computer. The only problem with this solution is all the other computers will object.

Will quibble with you on a bit of technicality: Eygpt, Syria, and Jordan do not consider them countrymen (at least in the sense that they will not offer them asylum as being any countrymen of theirs); I suppose the best description would be Arabs who have lived in the Palestine area (what often gets forgotten now is that there were Jews living in the Palestine as well, long before the nation of Israel was formed).

Be that as it may -- no, none of the co-religionist countries give a rat's ass about them other than how they can use them for political advantage.  That the Palis (for want of a better descriptor for them, if we're going to be technical) have gone along with this arrangement could be considered their own damn fault (truly, they've been going along with it since the days of the Grand Muft).

231  Even if the bloody boat doesn't have one piece of material that could in any way be construed as supporting an aggressive act, the Israelis couldn't let it through -- precedent would have been set.

It was a pretty good set up, so props to the miserable bastards for actually thinking one through pretty cleverly.

And no, Israel is not in a position to go acting like Putin (which may not be such a bad thing -- I don't know if having two Vlads at once would be such a good thing for the world); they've been "alinsky'd" pretty damn well.

Israel not only needs to worry about Iran, Palestine and a weak kneed U.S./EU/UN and their support (and this is the crux of the matter, the US and EU lack of support; Israel has to have somebody on the UN Security Council who will support them, spit) -- one of the biggest issues here is other ME countries wanting to see them take out Iran; those countries will push Israel mighty hard to get that accomplished as it would work out beautifully for them.  If I were Israel I'd be putting my nation on high alert -- there will be some sort of major terrorist attack coming out of Hamas controlled areas in the next few months; I'd almost bet on it -- at least by November, probably sooner.  The other ME countries cannot have a nuclear Iran, and would love to see Israel scapgoated for any attack; they will be pushing Israel very hard.

250  Actually, I do think I "get it" -- at least as much as a civilian housewife can.

The Israelis did the right thing insomuch as there was a "right thing" to do here (it really was a catch 22).  They could not let that ship get through the blockade, even if nothing incriminating was aboard (which we don't know yet) it would have set bad precedent for the future.  They could not use extreme force for the simple fact that you mention.  So they did the only option that was truly available -- that they got met with a bunch of club and chair wielding goons was just a "shit happens" moment.  The Turkish government (and other governments as well) has plenty of diplomatic room to wave this off -- it remains to be seen if they will take it or not (I'm guessing they will in spite of public outrage).

You have cause and effect backwards. Interesting how you did that. Evidently, you haven't been following goings-on in Turkey, lately, or you would know this.

-->Can you say hello to a 70 million muslim nation hell bent on revenge?

Huh? Welcome to the world. Did you just wake up or something?  And, 70 million muslims is nothing.  Of course, the muslims never cared about starting wars with 800 million Hindus, or with 2 billion Christians who control pretty much all of the really powerful weapons in the world .... but a few million muslims scares you.

For that, you probably should look to the EU and their forcing Turkey to amend their Constitution and take supreme power away from the secular military (which is what has held Turkey together and sane since the inception of the nation).  But, you can't bring yourself to blame the EU for putting Turkey on the knife's edge just to play around with them - as we all know that the EU never intended to let Turkey in, no matter what they did.

264 Turkey wants Israel to start something with Iran; I tend to believe this more than "crossing over to the other side".  It serves two functions: keeps the muslim street's attention on something and it can perhaps set up a situation whereby Israel is goaded into taking out Iran (which automatically makes Israel the scapegoat -- so win-win for the Turkish government, as well as the rest of the ME states).

As to "crossing over to the other side": The situation in the Muslim countries is very complicated to say the least -- AQ & Co. have caused a major problem for those governments (to put it in brief: some of the founding members of those nasty little groups consider wahhabbists to not be "fundamentally muslim" enough...and they believe in overthrowing government -- every government, as then it will bring about an Islamic golden age whereby no government shall be needed...inschallah will be the order of the day...nobody accused them of pragmatism when it came to religion).  Thanks to economics and a whole slew of issues, these folks have become quite popular with some of the proles (at least enough of them to make an impact) and they are not above murdering fellow muslims (as they don't see them as "muslim enough"); they are not above infiltrating and overthrowing a government.  It creates a very toxic condition for Islamic governments -- they have a terrorist problem of their own in their midst, and for now they are feeding that crocodile, hoping to be eaten last.

FYI, I haul from E Europe and am as far removed from the left as you might imagine. A bad tactical call from Israel may, however, turn out to be the most disastrous strategic blunder in recent memory, because, and now pay some attention, there is no better way to make the rift between the soft islamic govt in Ankara and the secular military disappear, than a perceived threat and loss of face caused by Israel. If I may add before you use the banhammer on me, you't better focus on domestic problems like the silent coup the Alyinskyte in the White House is pulling on USA rather than the two-bit satisfaction that a task force of the IDF Navy kicked in retard style some peacenik ass on the high seas. "The Elders group of past and present world leaders, including former South African president Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, on Monday condemned as “completely inexcusable” the deadly Israeli attack on a flotilla carrying aid for Gaza.

The group, which was launched by Mr. Mandela on his birthday in 2007 to try to solve some of the world’s most intractable conflicts, called for a “full investigation” of the incident and urged the UN Security Council “to debate the situation with a view to mandating action to end the closure of the Gaza Strip.” “This tragic incident should draw the world’s attention to the terrible suffering of Gaza’s 1.5 million people, half of whom are children under the age of 18,” the group said.

Israel’s three—year blockade of Gaza was not only “one of the world’s greatest human rights violations” and “illegal” under international law, it was also “counterproductive” because it empowered extremists in the Palestinian territory, they said.

The Elders includes six Nobel peace prize winners — former UN secretary general Kofi Annan, former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari, former US president Jimmy Carter, detained Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi and Mr. Mandela and Tutu.

Norway’s first female Prime Minister Gro Brundtland; former Brazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso; former Irish president and ex—UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson; Mozambican social activist Graca Machel; Indian women’s rights activist Ela Bhatt; and Algerian veteran UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi are the other members."

This wasnt a blunder dumbass it was manufactured outrage by the Pali's and necessary for the IDF. There is no need to ship aid via a water route, none, do you get that asswipe or are you that dense? the Israeli's will allow all aid through via land as long as they can inspect it first.

Which there lies the problem. You can't get Iranian made heavy weaponry through to Pali terrorists if the IDF gets to inspect it first. Israel doesnt need to apologize for trying to stop the murder of its people by folks who would make the Manson family look sane in comparison.

275 I lived in a Turkish muslim neighborhood in West Germany while in the Army in the late 70's. The only reason they put up with my roommate and me was because we had black market American cigarette rations to sell monthly.

We treat our dogs better than they treat their women, and that is not hyperbole. That whole environment was a real eye opener. "Culture" or "society" are not words that come to mind when dealing with that kind of group.

We are fortunate that there is an Israel and that they are up to the necessary task that will fall to them. They deserve support, and I think in the not too distant future, our gratitude.

It's a shameful state of affairs that they can count on neither from the asswipe

278 @280 unknown jane: to begin with, wait for daylight and the boats to come to immediate proximity of Israeli territorial waters. The timing was perfect for this (bad judgment on the ship crews there, not used for effect by the IDF). Request immediate compliance with the orders to head to harbour on suspicion of contraband and smuggling, maybe on live TV. Interdict their outward comms all the while. Half-assed commando operations (paintball rounds, dropping soldiers one by one amidst a frenzied mob??) are out of my script too. Given that this was a Navy operation, tactics should have focused on disabling the rudder and/or propulsion of ships in question, not on helo dropping a handful of troops in the middle of overwhelming, crazed foes. @281 blazer: if it wasn't blunder, what do you call it, success? they acted on faulty intelligence, with faulty PR and legal planning - see above, and with faulty military tactics - yea the guys on the ships have 19 dead, so what, they're with Allah now, no reason to be sad about it. The palis and the turks aboard those ships were stupid enough to challenge the israelis in a game of chicken which they lost; but do you really think they *were* stupid enough to imagine that a) they would not be stopped and b) that weaponry, heavy or otherwise, aboard the relief ships, would not be recovered by Israel and subsequently spend lotsa years in prisons there? would you bet your house that there are weapons aboard those ships? I would bet you 100:1 that there aren't any. The IDF should hang by the balls the ones responsible for this failure, they were immensely lucky not to lose any fighter for good today. Take care my friends, not everything is black or white in this world of ours.

285 They hailed that ship and directed them to harbor -- the ship refused.

Too much has been made of this "international waters" thing -- the fact is that the flotilla knew the rules (even that aid need not be brought by sea); they were hailed and ordered to proceed to harbor for inspection -- the ship attempted to run the blockade.  Now, what sort of choices does that leave?

Take care my friends, not everything is black or white in this world of ours.

From my perspective it is.

281 As has probably been pointed out by others already, Gabe, food and medical supplies are far, FAR from "much needed" in Gaza.

If there is any shortage of food and medical supplies in Gaza, it is a shortage caused with intent and political purpose by the leaders of Hamas.

I suppose we could quibble about meeting them in international waters rather than letting them penetrate into territorial -- however, that in and of itself poses a problem with setting precedent.

As for disabling the ship -- while that might have seemed like a better thing to do in hindsight, it is also fraught with complications.

Though I believe a significant number of muslims have "Stockholm Syndrome" due to the severe penalties for apostasy, I have regretfully reached the same conclusion.

This is not a religion. It's a death cult that sprang out of a syndication of desert bandits led by a pedophile.

Death is so central to it's ideology and disciplines that  there seems to be no other way. They are in fact encouraging it.

284 286: wait for daylight, wait for the convoy to approach national waters, call for a TV helicopter with good zoom lenses (BW imaging was a stupid stupid idea, it harkens back to insurgents blown in tiny bits by Apaches in Iraq and Afghanistan), interdict the ship convoy comms, USE ENGLISH FOR TV EFFECT when hailing said ships, then disable them and let them float aimlessly until the global warming or the next ice age comes along, or the peaceful dudes aboard the ships ask to be towed to a port when their water runs out. This is the Mediterranean, and the ships were sailing under a NATO country flag, it's not the Somali pirate infested waters, don't you get it? In order to get a degree of reference, both Bulgarian and Romanian Coast Guard ships, when in their respective territorial waters, regularly fire heavy machine guns or light auto cannons and disable Turkish poacher fishing trawlers which are then towed to port, all three countries are in NATO but nobody can complain about it. If this IDF operation looks like a success to anyone, then human wave assault tactics of the WW I must be the pinnacle of military art!!

From what Fox was saying this morning there were no food and medical supplies in the shipment.

Just what I suspected. Which means that this was just an attempt at testing the IDF's picket line and drumming up outrage. If the IDF  would have pussied out you best damn believe the next boats would have had rockets and assorted weapons and ammo on them from Iran and Syria.

I have posted on Turkey's Islamist government before. The ploy recently to announce a farce agreement (along with Brazil) to reprocess some Iranian nuclear materials as a means of helping Iran avoid international sanctions, was a deliberate attempt to undermine the United States efforts against Iran.

Now, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Islamist political party along with the Turkish government helped organize the flotilla trying to break the Israeli military blockade of Gaza.

Let's be clear, this flotilla had nothing to do with humanitarian supplies, which could have been shipped by land. The flotilla, if successful, would have opened the door to military supplies to Hamas concealed in later shipments.

Given that this was a Navy operation, tactics should have focused on disabling the rudder and/or propulsion of ships in question, not on helo dropping a handful of troops in the middle of overwhelming, crazed foes. erg, said this

have to admit i like the idea.still I think the Israelis results weren't as bad as might have been.

what's to say if they were drug to p[ort they wouldn't have had the fight at the port.

i'm not military i don't know.?

anyway, i still believe it doesn't matter what tactical decisions Israel made it would be criticised as overwhelming force etc..

haha, ok i'll finally leave the thread. whew,

Well let's see, you can take advantage of your superiority in night optical devices, or assault in daylight. Black and white imaging. It is called "infra red" - lets one see in the dark, per above. See if you can put it together now, Clausewitz.
