Overnight Thread-The I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Edition [CDR M]
— Open Blogger

What’s up Moron Nation and Happy Eve before New Year’s Eve! Back at the helm as Maet is out and about looking for the perfect hobo to capture and feed his family during these hard, hard times. Remember earlier this year the uproar over vuvuzela’s? Well, it takes a real man’s sport to properly use this noisy contraption properly.

Well, it is the end of 2010 so it’s time for the obligatory top 10 thingee’s of the year. Here’s your first one. Top 10 Sex Scandals of 2010. I can't believe that Larry King is still trying the pull my finger thing. Jeez. Here’s a snipet.

Mister John “Foot in Mouth” Mayer had plenty to say to Playboy about his former lovers Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston. In the interview, the singer called Aniston his dream mate and said that Simpson was “like crack cocaine to me ... It was like napalm, sexual napalm.”

Now correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t napalm imply some kind of burning sensation and not the good kind? Hope it wasn't tabasco.

So in NY we have the Ball Drop (morons snicker everywhere) but did you know what else is dropped on New Year's Eve in other cities (morons giggle everywhere)? Here's the Top 15 Strangest Things Dropped On New Year's Eve. What's up Pennsylvania? You got two in the top 10 and the first one looks like a burnt Mr. Peanut.

Here are you 20 best mug shots in 2010. Holy cow. I think #18 might be a troll that frequents the AoSHQ threads.

Well, GM seems to be reacting rapidly to their upcoming debacle called the Volt. It’s not as green as they would have you think so they have hit the drawing board and have come up with this. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the Chevy Outhouse, powered by farts. I think Taco Bell sales are about to go through the roof.

NASA's Secret catalog coming soon? Shape-shifting bra made of NASA space foam is the latest thing in 'biocosmeceuticals'. The only caveat? You already need some cleavage to make use of it’s “benefits” otherwise, stick to the push-up, padded ones. Or I guess you could give the Japanese Chinese Vibration machine a try that promises to vibrate your mammaries to a larger cup size.

Many graphs depicting eating habits in the United States. U.S. Food Facts.

Well this is interesting as it may explain why liberal vegans are friggin wacked out violent extremists. Too harsh? Red Meat Has A Calming Effect. I think Hobo meat counts.

Speaking of red meat and because I’m a giver, you moronette’s can enjoy this article. People’s Magazine Sexiest Men Alive in 2010. WARNING: NSFM. As in Not Safe For Morons.

Alright morons, sticking with the red theme and to offset the above post, I present to you some Ginger Ladies. WARNING: NSFW. Really. Kratos, watch out bro! Sexy Gingers.

Ok, some of you guys are hitting the party circuit for New Year's Eve and you are panicked right now because you don't have the gift for smooth talking your way with the ladies. Well it just so happens that there's an app for that! Now I realize not everyone has a smartphone yet so here is a handy list of some pick up lines that you can use instead. Some examples:

-You're so hot, you must be the real reason for global warming.
-I hope you know CPR, 'cause you take my breath away.
-If you were a tear in my eye, I would not cry for fear of losing you.
-Was your father a thief? 'Cause someone stole the stars from the sky and put them in your eyes.

Heh. Not bad. This is what happens when you mix LL Cool J with Dexy's Midnight Runner's.

More mash-ups at the Top 10 Mash Ups in 2010.

My, my. Florida sure had some strange headlines. One would almost think that we have some morons living there. Florida Tops Odd News in 2010. A taste of what’s in the article.

There were other strange dog stories. A man was walking his Jack Russell terrier in Tampa when an alligator snatched it.
He pulled out his handgun and started shooting at the gator. It let go of the dog, but the pet wasn't breathing until the man performed CPR and revived it.

Geek or serial killer? Take the quiz and see if you can figure out which is which.

Heh. Don’t be mad Peaches, it’s just the way Tom is. Top 10 Embarrassing Sports Star Endorsements.

Well my fellow morons and moronettes, this is my last ONT of the year unless Genghis gets trapped in a Chinese sweat shop factory. God Bless you all and have a Happy New Year!

Tonight's ONT brought to you by:

8 You got two in the top 10 and the first one looks like a burnt Mr. Peanut.

We actually got 3 in the top 10, thank you very much!

I went to the baloney drop in Lebanon a few years ago.

True story - my family used to live by a Seltzers Smokehouse Meats warehouse when I was a wee God of War.  One late night, my stepfather went out to his car for something and noticed an unmarked truck at the warehouse being loaded up with meat.  He called the cops and they arrested two plant workers who had been stealing meat stock from the warehouse for over a month.

About a week later, my parents got a huge package from Seltzers with all kinds of gourmet meat and baloney.  We ate so much that month that to this day, I really can't stand the taste of Lebanon baloney.

Chris in Va - or "Not Ed Rendell" if that is your real name - I set the divider differently.  I grew up in South Carolina, so I say the real Virginia begins where the towns are named after guns - Remington and Winchester.  Anything inside that ring is really kinda like an extension of DC and Montgomery County.

Haha. Yeah if you look at the 8th on a map they connected Reston via a nice sliver so that you wouldn't compromise the rest of the area. Didn't work out well long term as Fairfax 'blued'. Supposedly the 11th is going to end up more favorable after the upcoming redistricting. So will the 10th. They are going to throw a couple of less favorable 11th precincts (probably a few in Mason) into the 8th. Moran will have no complaints with that.

191 Funny, Tom Brady wasn't driving a Prius when this happened;

Brady was involved in an early-morning crash Thursday in the Back Bay area of Boston, when a minivan drove through a red light and into the path of the $97,000 Audi S8 driven by Brady.

The loaner Audi was part of an agreement between Brady and Audi that in some way involves Brady's participation in the Best Buddies charity. He has been honorary chairman of the charity for the past three years.

Motive power in the second-generation D3 S8 powertrain features a 5.2 litre all aluminium alloy 5,204 cubic centimetres (317.6 cu in) Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) 40-valve (four valves per cylinder) 90° V10 petrol engine (parts code: 07L, identification code: BSM). This engine is a derivative of the Gallardo's original 5.0 litre Lamborghini V10,[4] which was also developed under the Volkswagen Group ownership.

Perhaps, but the US is also spending money to prepare for any number of particular types of conflict - vs China, or NK, or Iran, etc. Also, we are highly concerned with minimizing our death toll in combat. China really only has to prepare for one type of conflict, and they aren't that concerned if it costs a million lives to win it.

Yeah Garrett I said it.  I am not a fanboy but I've been listening to U2 for, let's see, 32 years?  (Jeebus that seems like forever.)  They've made some great music.  And I don't think Bono is as pretentious and self-important as he is made out to be.  He gave a lot of props to G.W. Bush back in the day when that certainly wasn't cool.

Here is what Bono said at the 2006 National Prayer Breakfast:

A number of years ago, I met a wise man who changed my life -- in countless ways, big and small. I was always seeking the Lord’s blessing. I - I'd be saying, "Look, I've got a new song...Would you look out [for it]. I have a family; I'm going away on tour -- please look after them. I have this crazy idea. Could I have a blessing on it."

And this wise man asked me to stop. He said, "Stop asking God to bless what you’re doing. Get involved in what God is doing -- because it’s already blessed. Well, let's get involved in what God is doing. God, as I say, is always with the poor. That's what God is doing. That's what He’s calling us to do.

Now, I don't know about you, but there's a guy who doesn't think he is as important as all that.

251 #268 China really only has to prepare for one type of conflict, and they aren't that concerned if it costs a million lives to win it.

And they are getting quite adept at coming up with lower-cost ways to negate our high-tech weapon advances - using satellite-killing missiles to blind our view from space, developing missiles designed to sink expensive aircraft carriers.

Thankfully, the Chinese still have a long way to go before they become a blue-water naval power and are able to competently project power.

Has your brother met Kratos' brother?

Posted by: Editor at December 30, 2010 06:27 PM (YX6i/)

261 A quick hello!  'Hope everyone's day went well.  Mine consisted of realizing our getaway was snowed out (Mr Y-not managed to reschedule with the inn despite their no-cancellation policy) and checking my dog's pee for traces of blood (she had a couple of instances of it, but seems well otherwise and is back to normal; we'll take her to a vet Monday - couldn't get an appt earlier but will use emergency 24 hr vet if need be).  Doesn't that sound exciting, morons?!  Fortunately, the snow that ruined the getaway made the pee-watching much easier!  See, that's the silver lining!!!

'Looking forward to tomorrow's year-end threads.  Less cooters, more reminiscing would be my hope.

In the meantime, the only guy on that list I think was actually hawt was Hamm.  The others looked ghey or skeevy, especially Robert Downey.  I don't get the appeal.

Of course toying with them over $1-2T is probably a pretty good way to make sure they decide that the status quo doesn't work for them...

I'm not so sure they might not settle for even Taiwan to stay independent as long as they trade with them enough.

Siberia has always been a desire for China since they used to own it, and could use the resources. Plus its where China's low tech but supposedly decently trained army can match up well.

270 And this wise man asked me to stop. He said, "Stop asking God to bless what you’re doing. Get involved in what God is doing -- because it’s already blessed. Well, let's get involved in what God is doing. God, as I say, is always with the poor. That's what God is doing. That's what He’s calling us to do. As a wiser man once put it, God sure must just love the Poor, seeing how he made so many of them! Bono reminds me of the rich guy that that went to Tibet and climbed one of the peaks of the Hindu Kush to see the great hoky man that sat there. "Master," he asked, "What must I do to find contentment?" "Give all your wealth to the Poor," said the holy man. So the guy climbs off the mountain and gives away all his great wealth. Still not content, though, he climbs back up the mountain to see the holy man "I did as you told me! Now what?," he asks. "Now get the hell off my mountain, I detest the Poor!," the holy man answers.

Boys, do you know what Franklin County is famous for?

Moonshine, white lightening, Mountain Dew, "Apricot" brandy, catdaddy.

In other words, untaxed liquor.

Bedford, for something entirely different. The Bedford Boys.

Radical anarchists is what they are saying.  Follows two other bombs today.  I lived in Athens 20 years ago.  It was kinda like that then.  Bombs, night clubs, banks, etc.

There was a group called November 17 always struck at US interests - IBMs office, Citibank, etc.  And then the Soviet Union was breaking up, so they started bombing those guys for not toeing the line.  The day I left Athens there were 13 bombs, Soviets, Czechs, Poles, Yugoslavs - all those embassies.

Even something for the PLO I think.

Same kind of stuff.  Though the two bombs earlier today were at courthouses, and this one at a night club - my guess is the nightclub is part of a drug war and it is being masked by the radical anarchist thing.

379 Oh speaking of being a hidden conservative...

Years ago I and the misses went out with one of her coworkers. This was the first time we'd gone out with the coworker.

We were watching a basketball game in a fairly quiet bar. It was a game I really wanted to watch. I could tell the coworker was a wacky leftist, but whatever, I'm used to being around leftists, so I keep the chat idle. She keeps making inane, PC, lefty comments.

After a particularly stupid statement the coworkers boyfriend says coming like, "See how unpolitically correct she is, that's why I love her!!!" even though every word coming out of her mouth is textbook PC.

Well, the missus knows my feelings on PC but at the time wasn't really to aware of politics and opines, "Really? 18-1 [real name withheld] is conservative too!".

Two hours of political arguments later we finally get to leave. I did manage to get the coworker to shut up in time for the last few minutes of the game, so there was some small benefit and the missus did learn why you can't talk about politics with lefties...

Urban legend.  I know lots of people tell that tale, didn't happen that way.

The story goes that Palestinians kidnapped Russians in the late 80s like they were kidnapping Americans.  And then the KGB or some other piece of the Soviet intelligence world found the families of the kidnappers and cut off body parts (the best tellings they cut off their dicks) and sent them to the kidnappers and then they let the Russians go and never bothered them again.

Nice story, people say yeah you go all medieval on them that's the only way to go.

Trouble is its 100% bullshit.  The Palestinians would NEVER have picked on Soviets cause that would be biting the hand that feeds - the reason why those terrorists didn't fuck with the Soviets was because they were on the same side, it was where their bread was buttered.

And that's why it wasn't til the Berlin Wall was practically down before November 17 started bombing them.  Cause the money dried up.

That's certainly true, most nominal lefties get that way through laziness - its all around them and they don't care enough to educate themselves.

Living in liberal areas you have to be able to identify the politics of people you are around before you talk about anything approaching politics. There is a huge difference, presuming you don't want a huge argument, in how you should handle them;

Raving Lefty: Ignore

Ignorant Lefty: Play with their world view

Euro-phile: Bad mouth Eurotrash in a non-political way

etc...

Every year has at least one Friday the 13th. The largest possible number of Friday the 13ths in one year is three. Surprisingly, it turns out that a 13th is slightly more likely to fall on a Friday than any other day. This happens because the leap year rules make some patterns of weekdays happen more often than others.

my sister sent me a chain email with politically incorrect jokes. some are funny.

sorry for the crappy formating, but i am just cutting a pasting.

One of the other questions was to name two things commonly found in cells. It appears that Nigerians and Zimbabweans is not the correct answer

You can say lots of bad things about paedophiles but at least they drive slowly past schools

A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin.I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache"

Just put a deposit down on a brand new Porsche & mentioned it on FaceBook.I said "I can't wait for the new 911 to arrive !" Next thing I know 4000 Muslims have added me as a friend !!

Being a modest man, when I checked into my hotel on a recent trip, I said to the lady at the registration desk ...
"I hope the  porn channel in my room is disabled."
To which she replied, "No, it's regular porn, you sick bastard.”

I hate it when they build a 2 lane freeway anywhere. Having a freeway soon generates enought traffic for three. In LA thats a total joke.

Chicago's Ryan is bad - they take two three lane freeways and merge them into each other every mile or so. I used to have to make eight lane changes in about five miles to just avoid being forced off the highway.

470 LA Freeways and streets were a dream after all those years in NJ.  Admittedly the freeways deteriorated noticeably in the 15 years I was there, but they're still far superior to the poorly marked, poorly designed, and poorly maintained roads in NJ, which were not much improved from the day they were built in the 20s and 30s.

When I lived in Piscataway, there was an overpass over the 287 that was being worked on the whole three years I lived there, and when I visited from CA two years after moving, it was STILL being worked on.  Google maps has a feature that will show markers for areas with construction. The symbols cover Northern NJ like ants on a jelly donut.

This part of FL has such smooth roads you almost fall asleep. The streets in this neighborhood didn't really need repaving, but they repaved them all 2 months ago.

479 HEY!

Greetings and stuff.  I'm back at the HQ for a few minutes to axe a favor.

I've been searching for info on how public sector unions got so damned powerful. Someone (Kratos?) mentioned (in the "K~Bob is a drunken moby" thread) that President Kennedy signed an Executive Order spinning the whole thing up a major notch.

I remember seeing something on a Fox news special about something that President G.H.W. Bush signed that made it worse, but I can't find it. He did manage to veto an amendment to the Hatch Act that definitely would have made it far, far worse. So that seems like a good thing. But the program I saw sort of blamed it on him.

I did find this, which is interesting.

I'm a little freaked out that we don't seem to have a simple resource out there that gives serious details on the history of this thing.  No wonder Glenn Beck is raking in the mega-bucks. Even the Cato site seems to want you to learn about this history the hard way (plowing through gobs of papers). Unless my search-foo has totally failed me.

Someone here has to know a better set of search terms to unravel this beastie.

I'm looking for one site or one online document that does a decent job of explaining how we got here, and no, I don't need the short version. I already know that. I want details. Like the Executive orders link I provided.

Thanks for any help you can bring to this quest!

In Chicago there were some bridge repairs that were steel sheets nailed into the road with pins covering three inch cracks in the road. Think of a giant bandaid of steel.

I'll give you I-95. Why the hell is that freeway only 3 lanes out of DC

Long story. The freeway out of DC isn't 95. It's 395 (the Shirley Memorial Highway). It was supposed to be I-95 but that project was scrapped in the 60's due to protests from  DC residents who were due to be bulldozed. The southern spur from Springfield to 14th St (actually to NY Avenue) was renamed I-395 . The northern portion became (iirc) parts of DC/MD 295 (the Balt-Was Pkwy).

I-95 proper was routed around the eastern side of the Beltway from Alexandria to College Park, Maryland and this section of the Beltway is signed as I-95/I-495. It is four lanes.

A significant part of I-395 runs through Arlington County and those NIMBY assholes will not let the state improve anything (hi I-66. Fuck you Zimmerman!). The late Rep. Stan Parris (R) got HOV lanes added from I-95 to I-395 into the district in the 90's. The state now wants to expand these from 2-3 lanes in a partnership with Flour-Transurban (who are managing the I-495 HOT lanes project in Northwest Fairfax County). In return, the lanes become HOT-3. Current vechiles can continue to use them but you can also buy your way on for a variable toll. Flour will also expand the existing lanes from their terminus in Dumfries to Thornburg. The state will pay very little. Which is good because the state has very little.

Arlington, of course, is suing claiming it's a racist roject and holding the whole thing up.

What are you talking about?  We left the Iron Brewery, got some Slurpees, and drove back to Reading  .

Yeah, that was surreal.  We're leaving the Iron Brewery, trying to get back on the Interstate and as we're passing through this one area of town about 200 black teenagers start crossing the road en masse, followed by cop cars.  We had to wait about 5 minutes for them to all pass...

I tried looking up what that possibly was about, but no luck.

487 San Francisco is funny. Going there with East coast driving skills feels unfair. They have major intersections controlled by 4 way stops. You pull up. Cars at all 4 sides. Nobody goes. You look for a sign, east coast forever (maybe a whole second) and you go. AND NOBODY HONKS A FREAKING HORN OR ANYTHING!!!!

I've been searching for info on how public sector unions got so damned powerful. Someone (Kratos?) mentioned (in the "K~Bob is a drunken moby" thread) that President Kennedy signed an Executive Order spinning the whole thing up a major notch.

Wiki'ing the largest of the public sector unions;

http://tinyurl.com/ryuy8

Before the 1960s, only a small portion of public school teachers were unionized.[5] But that began to change when, in 1959, Wisconsin became the first state to pass a collective bargaining law for public employees. Over the next 20 years, most other states adopted similar laws. The passage of these laws had a significant impact on NEA, which began to serve members as a labor union, in addition to serving members as a professional association. Passage of these new labor laws, along with NEA's new role as a labor union, helped NEA membership grow from 766,000 in 1961 [6] to roughly 3.2 million today.

491 And why in the world would you take the six lane 5 and turn it into two lanes to continue on, with one lane going to the 60 and the other three going to the 10. Kbear knows what freeway connector I'm talking about.
Posted by: Rum, Goddess of Doom at December 31, 2010 01:12 AM

I damn near separated my shoulder congratulating myself once when I was driving to the OC and I didn't end up going east on the 60 at that interchange.  It's also a lot of fun going north where you have the 101 split just to the south of there in East LA

The main problem with the LA freeways is just that there's more cars than they can handle, and Sacramento stole the gas tax and bond issue money for road maintenance. They're at least well lit, marked, and designed where in NJ the roads are a clusterfuck from day one and if it rains at night you hope you properly guess where the yellow lines used to be before a trooper pulls you over for crossing them.

495 There is no such thing as a Maryland plated car without a Democrat sticker. Does not exist. K-Bob, I do not think it is possible that Kennedy created public sector unions in the federal gubmint. I worked a project at US Customs they had a history thing. After 9/11 Customs and Border Patrol were merged. They said that was a huge deal because they wanted to do that during WWII and that wasn't big enough to merge the agencies because their separate unions wouldn't allow it. I think I read on some thread here someone saying FDR wouldn't allow public sector unions. I don't think it is true.

K-Bob, Muravchik's The Rise and Fall of Socialism is good for the historical lesson.  People like Samuel Gompers, George Meany, and Layne Kirkland hated, hated socialists.  They knew what the socialists were after and were constantly on guard to keep them away from big labor leadership.  Without those commie-haters in charge, there was nothing to stop the labor union-socialism dynamic duo.  (I think Muravchik needs to do another edition of his book, updating it.)  I'm guessing that had something to do with the ugly power grasping.  It's no longer for union members; it's all about union leadership.  I think someone like Gompers would hate the fucks running the show now.  (Remember that he was combating real labor abuses in his day.  Since those are over and done, the need for unions isn't what it was.)

Glenn Beck should do a show about that.

515 Thanks, folks!

The book tip looks promising, RDB.  I'm mostly interested in the Federal workers aspect of this mess. The states should be able to cope with their own labor woes if we can get the Feds to cut the crap. The lesson there is how prosperous certain states (*cough* Texas, Tennessee *cough*) are when they restrain that crap.

I agree with Brewer that old-school unions (especially here in Coal Country) would have detested the communists. Especially when dealing with the goons employed against them to try and break them up back then.

People like CDR M or whomever around here is from Chesapeake would know more than me on this but supposedly in the tidewater area they want to "de-HOV" their lanes on I-64/264. But the state took federal money to help build them and so it would have to pay that back to break the agreement. And no money is getting spent on that.So they sit half unused each and every day.

I never did like the HOV concept. If that's what we have to settle for, fine, but while the principle is sound I tend to think it's just another way to whine about people in their dirty dirty cars.

Yep. Prince George's County, Maryland. I'd now segway into the massive corruption that IS PG County but that probably doesn't well considering this started by you mentioning slow black angry ladies and PG is majority black.

Unfortunately race & PG County are intertwined. You have a 65% black county that votes 85% Democratic, has no minority party (not heven a token one - look for the PGC website for the GOP. It's like a trip back to the mid-90's. And remember this isn't some rural county, it's one of the most populous in the state.) and massive unending corruption. And the residents pretend it isn't there and blast the Washington Post or any other outlet or person who mentions it, either as some mean fuddy-duddy or as a racist out to undermine their black utopia.

Meanwhile the outgoing county executive and his wife, an incoming county council member, attend the inauguration of the new council under federal indichtment and wearing an ankle bracelet.

But no, nothing to see here, move along.

What I'm wondering is how this Big Labor = Government Workers Unions stuff can be rolled back to something more sane, where unions represent normal citizens and not Democrat politicians.

I think it's amazing to read about the Hatch Act, which supposedly "restricts" government workers' unions to issues solely pertaining to collective bargaining. It's apparently construed so thinly that it's nearly useless.

I quit FB.  But they suspended me first.  It was during that Everybody Draw Muhammed Day thing.  Muzzies were getting people booted by organizing massive waves of complaints.  There was even another FB page where they were talking about who to target.  I didn't feel like re-upping after that.

551 Why would you care then? I only talk to people with whom I have an interest in hearing their response. Well at least when you can control it. Why put your personal information out there for someone you give no shit about? I guess by keep iun touch you mean teh Facebook posts & status updates & such but that's not real communication to me. Obviously nothing over the computer is real (as real as in person) but Facebook & its ilk moves further away from the concept while simultaneously giving the illusion of the opposite.

It is frivolous bullshit but it has its uses. Consider this. You're hanging out with a random friend, and this friends random friend comes over and you talk for a bit and then leave. Normally you would never call or email or otherwise speak to this person because you just barely met. But you know them well enough to friend them on facebook because that's what facebook is for. And then maybe you exchange a random comment or two. And it gives the illusion that you know each other better than you do, so maybe if this person can do you a favor, or put you in touch with someone useful to you, you have just expanded your network a little bit, and pretty soon your evil facebook octopus tentacles are EVERYWHERE MUAhahahaa.

But really. I got free cookies last week from someone I haven't spoken to in ten years because of facebook. How can you hate free cookies, Chris?

Incidentally Rum, Ms. Hughes, is an example of a black Republican (woman no less!). But she doesn't run the city, she's only a councilwoman.

She's also a federal employeee and member of the Commonwealth GOP Women's Club. She's active in NoVA Republican circles.

So she ran as an Independent per the Hatch act. Others do it all the time. And for the first year all was well until the Dems filed a bunch of complaints against her last autumn. From my understanding (and I must acknowldge I could be wrong), the complaints are quite frivolous. But she's a black Republican. In a Dem city and the Dems are angry that they lost two seats on what was an all-Democratic board last year.

I don't hate free cookies, I just hate illusions and pretenses. Either I know you or I don't. Either you're an acquaintance or you aren't. Either you're a friend or you aren't. Either I want to know you or I don't. And frankly if I don't know you, I don't want you to know a damn thing about me. And if I do, I doubt I'm going to post something meaningfully personal about myself on Facebook.

I had a ton of pseudo-friends during the Myspace era, which I was also late to and only signed up because I awas annoyed into it. (this was when people used myspace) I had over 1,000 contacts. And talked to maybe 20 people regularly, of which only 5-10 were really close friends. And I tlkaed to them outside of Myspace too. So what's the point?

yeah, it's one of the best animes in the past 15 years. A few clunker episodes but it's mostly killer. Worth buying the Remix boxset. After that, I would check out Samurai Champloo (same team doing a mix of chambara and modern day stuff and they got Nujabes to do soundtrack duties)

The same reason you're stating. Third parties or people who were introduced to me from others & sought me out or people I knew from places & events that sought me out. If they had some link to me of some type I didn't turn them down. But it was pointless.

Now I could have not accepted I suppose (if that's what you're getting at) but it brings it back to what's the point? That leaves you with the core of people you do care about - the people who I would be contacting by e-mail, or IM, or phone or in person. And the middle ground between the two might not be chatting on the phone or IM daily but would keep in contact via e-mail.

Other painfully boring drives ...  I-81 from Binghampton NY to Watertown NY.  In the winter it's like driving through Poland

Alligator Alley across the Everglades. Thankfully it's not that long

US 27 from Lake Okeechobie to Pembroke Pines can be put in that category too ever since they expanded it to limited access. I remember back in the 70s when it was two lanes, and the sheer terror of heat refraction and no shoulders and deep canals on each side kept the boredom away

I've never driven I-70 or I-80 through OH and IN, but I've heard those are snoozers, and I-94 in North Dakota and Eastern Montana is dangerously monotonous

Oh no, the NIMBYs on that side of the Valley have nixed any expansion plans for the 101. They were going to add an HOV lane to the 101 in the Valley and they all freaked out. So they're content with the traffic being as shitty as it is on that side of the Valley, I guess.

Disagree. The ONT is a glorified chat room. And should be a chat room (hides from Ace). Facebook is more interpersonal and yet still just as serious.

I suppose that's the thing. If my "friend" is only "heard from" on Facebook, then my message to that "Friend" is "Take a running leap off of the nearest available bridge, preferably after fucking yourself."

I guess we define friends differently, or perhaps the culture as a whole does these days.

The middleman. The need for a "profile". The need for frivolous "status updates". If I want someone to know my status, I'll tell them. And frankly I doubt most care. As sorry as I am to admit it, I'm not important enough to need to remind everyone what I'm eating on a particular day or that I have a cold. If they are a clsoe friend I'll tell them or we'll talk anyway and they'll inquire. It's less like human to uhman contact and more like artiface.

617 The middleman.

It's really not that much different from any other forum or chat thingy. I don't know why this particular arrangement of messeges offends you so much more than any other.

620 Eh, i like facebook. It's a good way to keep in touch with people and it has a good layout. You don't have to do status updates, i hardly ever do and neither do most of my friends, it's mainly for messaging and if something happens during the day that's worth making a post about  or just goofy shit and music videos.

I'm picky, opinionated, irritable, and contrarian? I don't know. Perhaps you are right. Your attitude seems a bit different than many (most?) I've come upon. I think Facebook takes itself too seriously. I think Facebook thinks it's more than it is and I think the media further this impression. And I think many people buy it. They think it's "more" or "deeper" than the other forms of communication, when it's actually not (indeed my opinion is that it's the opposite but obviously again I'm the minority here). I'd argue this also leads to a "dumbing down" (for lack of a better term at 3am) of traditional communication. And that's not good for society.

Incidentally, since I'm in the minority here, can I get some sort of federal grant?

I noticed that the first personal customazations for facebook are starting to show up around the tubes, so it's only a matter of time before it turns into the  sparkly, stroby headache inducing site that myspace became.

Your not really wrong, but it's kind of the same thing as teenagers sending 3000 texts a day. Everything is bad if you go insane with it. Of course, if I ruled the world no one under 18 would be allowed internet access or a cell phone, but that's another matter entirely.

oh god. Yeah I don't get "texting" either. It seems to me that the invention of the phone was because hearing someone's voice & vice versa was preferable to printed (text-based) communication. Evidently Samuel Morse is making a comeback!

(Don't get me wrong, there are reasons for texting. Though iI'm talking about the weirdos for whom text has superceded the phone as the way to communicate on the fucking phone).

Asian kids go crazy with it because the way billing works over there voice minutes are really expensive but texting is almost free.  In the US I'm not really sure why they do it.  Because you can send text messages in class?

648 Good Morning Morons

A man was walking his Jack Russell terrier in Tampa when an alligator snatched it. He pulled out his handgun and started shooting at the gator.

Why??? He should have been shooting at the Jack Shit Terrier or just let the gator have the damn worthless dog. Those hyper little barking hole digging SOBs have no useful traits what-so-ever.

We have no "kittehs" in my neighborhood. Over the past few years more and more neighbors have deemed it their "God give right" to own a dog and let it roam free. One had a Jack Shit Terrier who job it was to bark at me every day and dig up my lawn and the foundation to my house.

RIP Geraldine Hoff Doyl

The famous pic

Amazing comparison between then and now. This young woman was a 17 y.o. girl working in a factory in Ann Arbor.

Now a 17 y.o. girl in Ann Arbor not only would not be working at a factory of any kind, she would be sleeping in until 1 pm and then texting her anti war buddies to go down and "protest" the evil war mongers at the war factory.

2012 approaching Morons!

What will most likely be the first GOP presidential debate for 2012 will be hosted in SC on May 5th.

No word of who will be there yet even as this Dem PR rag puts up a picture of eye of Newt.

I guess we can see who they want our candidate to be.
