Overnight Thread- The Last Friday Before Obama Induced Doom Day On August 2nd Edition[CDR M]
— Open Blogger

Evening morons! Figured I'd start out the night with a dog and beer pic to help drown our debt limit sorrows. Let's just say, the drinking lamp is lit.

Now, what would you choose? This South Dakota Cowboy Town For $799,000 or an entire Detroit city block for a pack of Pall Mall's? I'd think I'd go with the cowboy town. That saloon would be kick ass. Perfect for a moron meetup and some high stakes poker. Plus it's NOT in a blue state. So ChemJeff, how's the Applebees thing workin' out? Might I suggest going to Starbucks and trying this pick up line? You never know! Worst case, you end up with an extra cup of coffee just hopefully not poured over your head!

Last Meals Project
This is kind of morbid but interesting none the less. Last Meals Project. This guy has gone and looked up what prisoners had as their last meal prior to execution. What would you have for a last meal? Me? I'd have a nice, big ass steak with a baked potato (with all the fixin's including bacon) and some corn mixed with asparagus and baby carrots with a beer chaser. Two beers if they'll let me. Then some Tiramisu. Gots to have me some Tiramisu.

Meat Desserts
Speaking of food (and dessert), how about some Sweet Meat Desserts? Slice of bacon pie anyone?

How Companies Got Their Names
Ever wonder how some companies got their names? I mean, Coca-Cola is easy but how about Adidas? Here's How 50 Big Companies Got Their Names.

DiY Training Vid
OK, here is your handy, do it yourself training video. Do you know how to make a beer bong? Well, you are in luck as Mandi is here to help us out in this endeavor.

Interesting Info
I had no idea that these Units Of Measurement actually had values associated with them. Then again, I'm a guy and never read directions.

A smidgen. If you just need a smidgen of butter in a recipe, it’s only 1/32 of a teaspoon, which isn’t even worth adding the butter at all.

Fapping Electronics

Anyone know what the above picture is? Well, it would seem that it is the FDA approved Electronic Male Fapping Enhancement device or iFAP for short. What the? I think I'll stick to the five finger shuffle. No batteries or tongs. Jeez. It's like SonicCare for your schlong or somethin.

War Pron
Someone order a couple JDAMs for delivery? Here you go, tonight's War Pron:

Art Submission
This bike is pretty bad ass. The Alien Harley Motorcycle.

Random Instrumental Song
I love this song. Heard last year during the football season during a commercial for the WAC Conference. Finally figured out who did it.

Yeah, it's true. This President blows.

Tonight's musical journey involves time travel. Yeah, that's right. Back to the 80's. Good times.

Well, it seems George Lucas has finally got a trailer out for his WWII movie about the Tuskegee Airmen called Red Tails (it's been in production for like 20 years). You just know he's screwed this movie up somehow. The air combat scenes, while cool, look about as good as the show Dogfighting that was on the History Channel. Wish they could've used more shots of the real deal but we'll see. Hopefully it's historically accurate but not likely knowing Hollywood. At least it looks better than Pearl Harbor did. So far.

My mother's family was from Detroit. We drove past the house she grew up in a year or so ago. It was turned into a crackhouse at one point, the hedges and trees were very overgrown, graffitti on the garage.

The city finally got around to tearing it down. Just yet another of many empty lots.

"Detroit! 50 years of Democratic Leadership!"

That needs to be put onto buttons and bumper stickers. I used to defend the city in my younger, liberal days. Now I just accept that it's a toilet.

On the plus side, Detroit is my favourite third world city.

Canadians never seemed to understand the intense pride Americans take in flying the American flag. I remember one Olympics a long while back where Canada was giving out Canadian flags and it turned into a flap because people found it distasteful that too many Canadian flags were flying. They found it 'American'.

It worked. Aside from the military, I can truthfully say I have no pride or loyalty to Canada. The human rights tribunals helped of course but once you've experienced freedom in other countries, it's hard to come back and feel the cold fingers of the nanny state massage your prostate.

Me too. Canadians never got the entire 'flag represents freedom' idea. The American flag is a symbol. Canadians can't even tell you what it means to be Canadian after "hockey, beer and we're not American," much less have a flag represent something.

Apparently a lot of countries find American patriotism weird. In Europe they've all been so traumatized by the 20th Century that they see any display of national pride as the first step to Nuremberg.

I've tried to explain this to a German professor. I explained to him that European Nationalism/Patriotism always involved more than just pride in their country. For example, German/French/Russian  nationalism or patriotism always has an irredentism aspect to it.  It's always Germany is great and therefore should take Alsace Lorraine back, or Russia is great and we need to rebuilt the Romanov empire.

Whereas American nationalism or patriotism is nothing more than pride in our country and it's history.

114 I can see that. It was pretty much in line with the Captain America origin story as well as the part about being frozen in the airplane.

The last five minutes were, to me, the most interesting part of the movie.  (No spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen it; they find the plane at the very beginning.)  I really wanted to see where things went after that, but whoops, out of time!  End credits.

It really irritates me that studios have become so arrogant about their prospects for franchises that they don't even bother to end their movies anymore.  They just assume everyone will be back two years later to pick the story up.  (And they're usually right.)

Morons and Moronettes, I will confess that I am under the influence of Bombay Sapphire. That said, I received the THIRD poll about the debt limit from one of my local congressmen this afternoon.

My response was: "Congressman Brooks,

I received your email poll asking my opinion on whether or not the debt ceiling should be raised. I responded (and received the poll two more times...).

I am disappointed that you voted in favor of Representative Boehner's plan. While I do believe that Mr. Boehner harbors no ill will against the American people, his plan does not do enough. The cuts proposed are smoke and mirrors. According to Moody's and the S&P, it's not enough to keep us from losing our AAA rating. Plus, these aren't real cuts. They're just reductions in future planned spending.

I don't have a great credit rating. That's my fault (okay, some credit goes to my ex-husband) and I've been working diligently to improve it. The major credit reporting agencies for those of us footing the bill for all of these programs and entitlements take into consideration our debt versus our income. If it's unbalanced, our credit rating suffers.

Those representing us in Washington need to abide by the same rules as the rest of us. These smoke and mirror cuts do not reflect how those of us facing financial uncertainty spend money. Congressman Brooks, when I was out of work earlier this year and had damage to my home on April 27th, I knew that my insurance would not cover the flood damage to my home. I knew that FEMA might. I did not even for a moment consider a SBA loan. The economy is too shaky for me to consider adding to my personal debt.

I've read that this debt ceiling increase will add $20,000 worth of "responsibility for the debt" to each law-abiding, tax-paying household in the United States. I'm not okay with that.

When times get tough and the future is uncertain, I tighten my belt, cut unnecessary spending, and save money in every way that I can. I expect my Government to do the same.

Before I was able to start improving my credit, I knew that if I were to get a loan, I was going to pay a higher interest rate. It was my penalty for not appropriately managing my finances.

While I don't wish to see the US in a position where the interest payment on our debt grows higher, we have not appropriately managed our finances. It's time for a little tough love. We can NOT tax or spend or borrow or print our way out of it. It's time for this nation to tighten its belt, cut unnecessary spending, and save money wherever we can.

President Obama said (paraphrased roughly) that we need to start acting like adults. Adults take responsibility for their actions. We've spent beyond our means. We've brought our financial reputation into question. It's time to fix that. We don't do that by asking the credit card company to increase our limit.

If we eventually default on our debt, that's the price we pay for our reckless spending. It will be hard. It will, likely, be painful. Maybe it will teach us that we need to live within our means; that no one is out there who's going to bail us out and save us from our folly.

Let's be grown-ups, Congressman Brooks. Let's make the decision to own our mistakes and move forward in a way that makes sure we don't make those same mistakes again. Anything less than serious, real cuts in spending and anything less than expecting those entrepreneurs who've been successful to contribute to our continued pilfering of our children's and grandchildren's earnings is not enough.

I hope my vote for you was a good one and I look forward to your response.

Regards,
Ima Wurdibitsch (name changed to protect the bitchy)

If I have my head up my ass, please let me know. I'm not too proud to send him another message correcting any incorrect assumptions or understandings I may have had.

That's another thing I didn't like -- the feeling that the filmmakers were treading on eggshells, trying so hard not to do anything that might offend somebody, somewhere.

Not only was there never a single American flag; there was never a swastika to be seen, either.  That makes a certain amount of sense since the Red Skull was in command of a rogue division, but you just knew the studio was afraid someone might get angry if a swastika showed up in a WWII movie (much of which takes place in Europe).

You better believe they'd never have had Cap fighting in the Pacific Theater.

The Army appeared to be much more integrated than it actually was at the time.  They just had to create diversity where it never would have existed, right down to putting a Japanese guy in the captured division.  It was just ridiculous and constantly took me out of the movie.  (Yes, I'm a racist.)

172 Ref "Red Tails" The CGI was quite a bit better than History Channel Dogfights. But still could have been better. If the picture isn't coming out soon, they have time to tweak it and make it look more real. I noticed the bomber pilots complaining about their fighters not being near enough. That's the same thing the German bomber pilots complained about during the Battle of Britain. Look, you can escort close or escort far. If you escort close, the bomber crew can see you and they feel good. If you escort far you can gain tactical advantage over the enemy interceptors and shoot them down. But the chance of some interceptors getting in amongst the bombers goes up. Ref the early combat record. Yeah, no kills. They were flying a lot of ground support in P-40s. Pretty damn good record when they got front line fighters and got to play in the big leagues. Ref "Dogfights". The episode on the Tuskegee airman was pretty good. They went over a HELLACIOUS engagement that started when about 50-100 of our guys ran head on into 50-100 of their guys... at about 100 feet over a lake!

175 I explained to him that European Nationalism/Patriotism always involved more than just pride in their country.

I would say more specifically, European nationalism is racial - the tribe of the Germans, or French, or Russian is great.

American nationalism is built on our belief that our ideals, which transcend petty racial groups, are good and worth being cherished.

177 Yeah it seems like their "patriotism" is a case of "We're the greatest people on the world and we should conquer other places and make them subjected to us and keep our place pure." Our patriotism is "We're the greatest place in the world come and join us and be a part of it." See, it's the "We're the greatest place on Earth" that drives Libs batty. Traditionally conservatives view politics as merely one segment of life, so it isn't something you get into in public unless you are gathered to talk about it.

Liberals view politics as EVERYTHING. So it makes as much sense to talk about politics endlessly, since it is the only important thing.

If there were American flags in those scenes they certainly weren't obvious.  The filmmakers were clearly making a conscious attempt to marginalize the flag throughout the movie.

And ensemble ethnic WWII squad is an old trope back to the 40s. Remember Hogans heroes at all? And Americans of Japanese heritage did fight in Europe.

Some did, but not in integrated units.  Neither did blacks.  And yet (avert your eyes, Rum) when the Captain breaks out the captured unit, among the prisoners are the Japanese guy and at least one black guy.  This simply wouldn't have been the case.  The movie was making a typically liberal all-races-must-be-represented bid.

But that makes my point more strongly I think. If people seem to like the music in movie X - why wouldn't you expect them to listen to it on the radio?

I'll admit, I am a sucker for our flag. I just love seeing it move in the wind. It's quite a sight to see and I never get tired of it.

Ben, so am I!

Alexthechick, what size are your feet?  I wear a 2 or a 2 1/2 in kids (U*g*g*s, Danskos, Juicy Couture Kids, Keens, Hunter, Michael Kors Kids are about 2/3 the price of adult shoes) and a 4 in women's.  My running shoe is a 5 because ASICs run short and I wear orthotics in my running shoes.  You can save so much money if you buy kids shoes (and they are more and more adult looking now, it's crazy).  The rule of thumb is to go down a size and an half for kids.  So if you're a 4, 2 1/2.  If you are a 5, 3 1/2.

I read one excellent (fictional) short story about a woman who cooked convict meals.  She was in charge, and did the "last meals".  Because she had problems with her teenage son at home and was a single mom, was sick and tired of everything, especially the prisoner, who was her assistant, she decided to put tin-foil pieces in the hamburger that was the "last request".  She went on, in her mind, for a great deal. doing a rationalization over this atrocity,  that we can only conger up ourselves.  Well, the death-row guy couldn't put down a bite, anyway so he didn't know..  .  A lot of times they will order tremendous meals and eat them.

Elections have consequences, folks.

We could do a whole post on that:

Can anyone imagine that our president would bow countless times to countless world leaders.

Can anyone imagine that our president wouldn't even comment or lift a finger to aid the people fighting for democracy in Iran or Syria or elsewhere.

Can anyone image that our presidnet would be on the side of Zelaya in Honduras?

And ensemble ethnic WWII squad is an old trope back to the 40s. Remember Hogans heroes at all? And Americans of Japanese heritage did fight in Europe.

The 442nd was a battalion of Japanese American soldiers.  (I think the majority were from HI).  They are the most decorated battalion in history with 21 MOH recipients.  They under Mark Clark.  Not only did the rescue the Lost Battalion (from TX), they also were instrumental in freeing the prisoners at Dachau.

303 I gotta object to some of the measurements; A Shake, being ten nanoseconds, is approximately the time it takes a neutron emitted from one splitting atom to hit another splitting atom; it was defined as such as part of the U.S. Nuclear program.

But it was already in common parlance in the phrase "two shakes of a lamb's tail", the 10 nanoseconds definition only came up because some physicist was feeling funny. Therefore I refuse to be held down to a specific time if I use the unit in other contexts. Seeing as the site doesn't care whether the precise or imprecise definition came first, I don't find their statements definitive.

Your porch light isn't just about showing that you're home and accepting visitors, it's part of your home's security. Burglars and miscreants don't like to work in the light. If you want to show that you're not accepting visitors, a partially tanned hobo pelt hanging next to the door should do the job nicely.

333 There was no official policy of segregating any "Asian-Americans" during WWII. Units that were mostly all one ethnicity were so because, under the "empty division" National Guard plan, there was a geographic affiliation of many regiments.

I met a wonderful Japanese guy from Pittburgh while touring the Hurtgenwald with the 78th (Lightning) Division. Germans were astonished to see him (in '44, not on the tour). In the 99th, there were several guys who were referred to, with the ethnic accuracy typical of the time, "Chinese or somethin." They were accepted and served well.

Nisei thought they weren't sent to the Pacific because of what the Japanese would do them if captured. Perhaps there were different stories being told.

i dont think you are imagining it. but i have a theory. My guy is one of those fatherless  hispanic babies born to a chick dating the gang.

they dont seem to talk to their babies or read to them much. i suspect those babies are dragged around but not really cuddled and told stories to alot. SO they dont have words to use. because nobody is teaching them. And they feel ignored, so they scream. it's odd.

Grimmy doesnt look like his brothers, they are all bastards and probaly from different dads, None were good in school, and he flunked kindergarten. To this day, Mr. Grim's vocab isnt great, but hes not a stupid man and hes an awesome problem solver. However as a woman who lives with him and who knows something of being a mom, im pretty sure that little boy was never held and rarely just... you know... talked to. He was downright puzzled by the concept of "kiss goodnight" he'd never heard of it.

these are just my observations and do not go for all hispanic families, some of which are wonderful (I have had the pleasure to be part of of them) But some... well thats my theory peaches.

my foster daughter had to explain it to him. it was a completely alien concept to kiss and hug before you go to bed so that everyone in the house knows everyone else loves each other every night.

The other odd thing about him is he can be completely invisible in plain sight and move silently. This helps him vocationally, but socially we had to remind him not to be a "creepy gargoyle in the corner." He grew up in a scary house. Being invisible and silent meant not being noticed was better than getting attention.

If he hadnt found the USMC and they hadnt found him the perfect niche, i am pretty sure he would have ended up in prison, and not become a hero. I am pretty glad he chose the path of angels, but it was narrow, and he nearly fell off. As it is they polished up his halo and polled his horns. The USMC of course sharpened his teeth and talons some, but thats just business, you know.

362 Long time ago, my girlfriend's car was broken into in my backyard parking lot, under my two-story mercury vapor mast light that made reading possible after dark in my yard and four adjoining properties. The radio was stolen. The smartass young cop who took the report said, "Well you sure gave them a nice light to work by." This happened during a 'Light the Night Against Crime ' campaign, co-sponsored by the power company and the police department.

He also pointed out that there was a public housing project, a long way away by street but only about a mile if one walked the railroad track a block away. The police "knew" that it was used as a crimeway, but there "wasn't anything they could do about it." Then he stood there, like he was waiting for me to say there was something I could.

That was the last time I called the police for anything. As far as I'm concerned, they're in on the deal. That light's been out for 15 years.

There's always video games.

I had forgotten how much fun the first GoW is to play.  Even after one has been "spoiled" by GoW3, the first GoW still holds up, particularly because its story-line is much better.  It's also a bit more subtle and has some good quiet, yet moving moments.

365 Saw the grandkid today of my music teacher way back in middle school.    Reminded me of the time the music teacher was lecturing some of the boys in in the class  who happened to have gotten caught by him smoking on school property and said that they shouldn't be sneaking fags on the school grounds.  We thought he meant gay men, and the whole class giggled.

Then there was the time in middle school that our science teacher called my class a bunch of hellions.  We thought she had sworn at us.

Then there was the time when our middle school had the varsity-teacher basketball game.  The music teacher and one of the varsity kids were going for a jump ball.  The music teacher jumped up, came down, and his opponent's finger went straight up his nose.  Blood everywhere!  The whole auditorium screamed.

What brought this trip down memory lane?  Hell, I don't know, could be that I'm on my 2nd beer.  Yeah, that's it.

Also for suckers.

I guarantee that at least 95% of all rich and well-off libs find and exploit every tax-loop hole and break they can find, legal or not.  Hypocrites.

The one thing I liked about Fuckabee is that he set up the "Tax Me More Fund" in Arkansas where people could contribute extra money if they felt they didn't pay enough in taxes.  I think overall it netted about 3 or 5 thousand dollars, showing yet again that libs seldom put their own money where their mouth is.

502 Finally watching that Red Tails trailer...

First thought, looks WAY WAY WAY better than Dog Fights.  Much as I loved that show, sorry guys I can't really see the comparison.  But since it's Lucas Film, I can compare the VFX to the Star Wars prequel trilogy.  And it really works here.  Lucas was trying in the prequels to give some of the fight scenes a quality that was a cross between newsreel footage and a seriel matinee.  But here, it looks very very good.

Cuba Gooding Jr. is in this?  Okay, cool.  He was in the HBO movie, The Tuskegee Airmen.  But as I recall I believe his character winds up dying fairly early, either by accident or by suicide.  I guess he wanted to play one who lives this time.  Okay, I'm down.

Bryan Cranston!  I like this guy, he's good.

It's a story that has been done but it's such a great story.  Very feel good, very awesome.  I'm guessing it's asking too much to be on the level of something like Glory, or even the Tuskeegee Airmen, but if it's at least honest in its history and sincere and patriotic, I think it could be a winner.

Totally useless trivia.  Frank Fujita of the Texas Army National Guard was captured with the rest of his unit in the Pacific.  Because they had done so well in the Louisiana war games, they were shipped overseas before Pearl Harbor.

As for Red Tails.  I will pass.  I admit the CGI model of the Bf-109G-6/R6 is gorgeous, the markings are totally off kilter.  And every 109 in that clip is a Bf-109G-6/R6.  And that is just the first 12 seconds of the clip.  If they can't bother to be correct when History Channel's Dogfight series does, I will pass.

I vote for the South Dakota town.  Maybe if we donate to the tip jar, Ace will buy the town.

First bill is Senate Majority Leader's under suspension (2/3 to pass), which means the failure to pass will look worse than it already will be. That's all I'll say until later.

HAY everyone, I just got back from Cowboys & Aliens, and it was COOL! I wrote a review of it here.

510 I saw Cowboys & Aliens, didn't like it but figured it would be a mileage may vary type of movie.  Personally I thought Harrison Ford was one of the film's saving graces.  And Olivia Wilde's hot and hard nipples.

Can't mention them nipples nearly enough.

512 Howdy and ciao-dee folks, here is one last plot twist in the soap opera "Debts of Our Lives": (Reuters) – Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said on Friday his budget legislation would increase the nation’s borrowing authority until March, 2013 and reiterated that he would not accept a short-term debt limit increase as Republicans are insisting.

513 plus assorted tastee treets thehill.com Actor Ian Somerhalder made it off the small screen and onto Capitol Hill on Thursday to testify at a hearing. Somerhalder, best known for his role on the TV series "Lost," appeared on the Hill Thursday to testify about the plight of endangered species before a subcommittee of the House Natural Resources Committee. Somerhalder, who founded an eponymous foundation in 2010 focused on protecting animals and the environment, tweeted his excitement all day Thursday. "I'm about to testify in Congress for our most threatened species!" he tweeted. I had no idea this actor was so concerned for the vanishing taxpayer. And right on cue: thehill.com Headline: Women would suffer most from congressional budget cuts By Jeffrey R. Lewis, chairman of the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement Women across America should ask themselves one question: Why is Congress determined to destroy my economic future? Why is the Republican plan to solve the nation's debt and deficit crisis going to push me closer to poverty in my older years? It sure is a good thing the Boehner Plan deflected criticism of Republicans so well.

518 Boehner stuck his neck out. Waaay out. He used every available tool in his arsenal as Speaker to discipline his troops into accepting a plan they loathed.

That, folks, is "compromise". It is doing something you'd rather not, ceding ground in the name of comity and the name of putting the interest of the greater good before your own interests. The Boehner plan is a stone-cold turkey that comforts no conservative. Seeing him in interviews, he knew it. "This is the best we can get from these guys" is the perfect summation of his position.

And the Democrats chopped his head off. The Senate raped the prostrate Speaker of the House.

Lesson? Forget compromise. The Democrats' experience of compromise is not consonant with yours. To you, compromise is a virtue that glides hand in hand with reason and objectivity. To them, it is a weapon to be used to get their way.

The logical and rightful endgame for Boehner at this point is to pack it up, to indicate that compromise itself turned out to be a failed ruse.

The Senate has the Cut, Cap and Balance proposal which the House has passed, and the Boehner Plan which the House has passed. It is up to the Senate to vote on something. And the Senate would be well advised to vote on the House bills as presented, because the window has closed on getting another vote from the House on any of these measures.

The House has done it job, and is finished dicking around. Now the Senate and White House must act.

519 Cowboy, I agree.  What I don't understand is why it is so hard to do the right thing.  I guess it is in the agreeing of what the right thing is.

Is there really anyone thinking leaving our grandchildren in debt is the right thing?

Get as bigass a fixture as you can find, load it with the highest wattage incandescent bulbs you can find and leave it on 24/7. It's even better if you rig up a speaker to it that blurts out at random, "Suck it, libtards!"

You give Boehner too much credit. He's cooked up something with Obama, Reid and McConnell.

Limbaugh is 100% correct as usual. They don't give a shit about the debt, they just want to be reelected until it all crashes and we start looking for them with baseball bats.
