The Left Has a Freakout over the Hobby Lobby Decision

Of course OUTRAGE!!! doesn't requires any facts or understanding of the case.

scotusblog

freakout2

freakout1

Even if you're a US Senator.

elizabeth-warren-hobby-lobby

And even Harry Reid got in on the insane outrage action.

freakout3

But wait - the Supreme Court decision just upheld the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act as providing an exemption from the Obamacare contraception mandate. Hmm 'Religious Freedom' - that sounds kind of scary and conservative. Just what kind of rightwing monsters were supporting this RFRA back in 93?

Why this kind:

RFRA passed in 1993 with overwhelming bipartisan support. It was sponsored by Democrat N.Y. Sen. Charles Schumer and earned the votes of leading lib dinosaurs including Harry Reid, Dianne Feinstein, Patty Murray, and Barbara Boxer.

So twenty years ago a religious freedom exception to some laws was the orthodox liberal position - today it's the new fascism. But with the same old liberal faces bellowing and raging over it.

Quote of the Day

They must always have a Great Evil to crusade against, because only crusading against a Great Evil can excuse their own actions.

-- Glenn Reynolds on the Left

Quote of the Day II - The #WarOnWomen Begins

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which Senator Hatch and I, and 23 other Senators have introduced, would restore the compelling interest test for evaluating free exercise claims. It would do so by establishing a statutory right that adopts the standards previously, used by the Supreme Court. In essence, the act codifies the requirement for the Government to demonstrate that any law burdening the free exercise of religion is essential to furthering a compelling governmental interest and is the least restrictive means of achieving that interest.

The act creates no new rights for any religious practice or for any potential litigant. Not every free exercise claim will prevail. It simply restores the long-established standard of review that had worked well for many years and that requires courts to weigh free exercise claims against the compelling State interest standard. Our bill is strongly supported by an extraordinary coalition of organizations with widely differing views on many other issues. The National Association of Evangelicals, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Coalitions for America, People for the American Way, just to name a few, support the legislation. They don't often agree on much, but they do agree on the need to pass the Religious Freedom Restoration Act because religious freedom in America is damaged each day the Smith decision stands.

-- Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA), September 18th, 1992.

The Like 100 Years Old Constitution Actually Had a Pretty Good June

Last week the Supremes shot down Obama's "recess" appointments because under that old document, they were not really recess appointments.

And also free speech buffer zones, because even people protesting to protect the unborn are entitled to speak their minds.

And hey, government, leave our cellphones alone.

Today, in Hobby Lobby, the principles of religious freedom in the First Amendment, as codified additionally in legislation, were upheld.

And also today, the Supremes upheld freedom of speech principles in holding that home care workers could not be forced to subsidize public sector union political activities.

For an old lady, the Constitution is holding up just fine.

So Julian Assange Has a New Gig

Salt Lake PD Enter Owners' Property, Shoots His Dog While Looking For a Lost Child

"We were looking for a lost child," an Salt Lake City police officer tells dog owner Sean Kendall. "He entered the yard looking for a lost child. He was threatened by the dog and shot the dog. That's as simple as it gets." I don't think so. While the cops' claim of exigent circumstances and their immunity from prosecution will shield them from all but the mildest legal blowback, the video above will do major damage to the SLCPD's relations with the community.

The takeaway here is that your dog is not safe in your own fenced yard if there are police nearby who feel like taking a look around.

'A Swat Team Blew a Hole in My 2-Year-Old Son'

MA SWAT Teams Claim They're Private Corporations and Immune from Open Records Laws

So they're heavily armed agents of the government when it's convenient, but a private corporation when the law cramps their style. Of course being a private corporation ought to also mean giving up all qualified immunity for their actions as well.

As it turns out, a number of SWAT teams in the Bay State are operated by what are called law enforcement councils, or LECs. These LECs are funded by several police agencies in a given geographic area and overseen by an executive board, which is usually made up of police chiefs from member police departments. ... Some of these LECs have also apparently incorporated as 501(c)(3) organizations. And it's here that we run into problems. According to the ACLU, the LECs are claiming that the 501(c)(3) status means that they're private corporations, not government agencies. And therefore, they say they're immune from open records requests. Let's be clear. These agencies oversee police activities. They employ cops who carry guns, wear badges, collect paychecks provided by taxpayers and have the power to detain, arrest, injure and kill. They operate SWAT teams, which conduct raids on private residences. And yet they say that because they've incorporated, they're immune to Massachusetts open records laws. The state's residents aren't permitted to know how often the SWAT teams are used, what they're used for, what sort of training they get or who they're primarily used against.

Florida Man Faces $48k Fine For Jamming Drivers' Cellphones

Because he didn't like people talking on cell phones during his commute home.

An American driver is facing a $48,000 fine after using a mobile signal jammer in his car to block motorists around him from using their phones on the road. Jason Humphreys reportedly used the jammer from the back seat of his Toyota Highlander for around two years before being caught by Florida police. The 60-year-old said that he used the jammer - which transmits radio signals that interfere with mobile phones - because he was 'fed up' with watching others use their phones on the road.

...The case along I-4 started on April 29, 2013, when the cellular company Metro PCS contacted the Federal Communications Commission because a transmission tower along I-4 would suffer in the morning and evening. A week later, agents from the FCC's enforcement division in Tampa staked out the freeway on May 7, 8, and 9 and pinpointed a "strong wideband emission" in the cellphone wireless range "emanating from a blue Toyota Highlander sport utility vehicle," with Florida license plates, according to a complaint issued by the FCC on Tuesday. Another clue: When Hillsborough County Sheriffs deputies stopped the SUV, their own two-way radios were jammed."

Of course everyone looking down at their phones when their calls abruptly cutoff probably didn't make for safer driving either.

I have seen several numbers where it is 1,500 votes.

MS Code 23-15-561 on vote buying:

(3) Any candidate who shall violate the provisions of subsection (1) of this section shall, upon conviction thereof, in addition to the fine prescribed above, be punished by:
(a) Disqualification as a candidate in the race for the elective office; or
(b) Removal from the elective office, if the offender has been elected thereto.

You watch, there is going to be a move to make abortion for any frivolous reason mainstream.

190 It doesn't surprise me one bit that Cochran was involved in vote buying. I'd said earlier that Cochran was a Dixiecrat at heart and that blacks couldn't trust him. Blacks with principle wouldn't touch him. But, as whites have our people without principle, of which Cochran is Exhibit A, so do blacks . . . (I'd also hoped McDaniel would have tried *some* outreach, like running against alien amnesty, but, well. He was a newbie to Southern politix.) The fact that black Democrats in that state are now saying they "own" him also implies that Money Changed Hands.

"Something isn't right" - then I learned what the surgery was for, and it wasn't exactly minor..She now has an appt for Wed morning to see if she needs to go back under the knife (probably). If so, this will be MAJOR surgery, and she's beside hesrself. Please keep her in your prayers. Thanks in advance.

240 Some of you may recall last weekend that I was asking for advice on what kind of car to buy. I had been thinking about a Mazda 5 since I saw that it got a "recommended" rating from Consumer Reports, and also that blogger Karl Denninger had recently bought a Mazda 6 and is very happy with it. So I was looking online today and found one with a manual transmission at a nearby dealer. They had 10 with automatics. I decided to drop by after work to take a look at it. It was also listed as on sale for almost 10% off the list price. I remembered that a friend had told me that the end of the month was the best time to buy because they want to clear out inventory. I got there and measured the cargo compartment to make sure it was big enough for my purposes. But I wanted to be certain. When the salesman handed me the key to take it out for a test drive, I asked him if he wouldn't mind if we drove to the storage facility where I keep my telescope. It was over a 40 mile round trip. He said OK, so off we went. We folded down the back seats, I set up the ramps, and wheeled the scope in and out a few times. It fit fine. So I pulled the trigger. We went back to the dealership and I signed the papers. Tomorrow I will go to the bank to get a cashier's check. The paperwork indicates 49 miles on the odometer, most of which I put there myself. That was literally the first car I looked at. It drove fine, has good reviews, and my scope fit in it. Why prolong the search? Now all I have to do is find the title for my Corolla...

And guess which Republican candidate you must vote for said they were totes wrong:

Scott Brown issued a statement Friday in strong support of the law, as well as a similar law recently signed New Hampshire. Brown voted for the law as a Massachusetts state senator in 2007.

"I supported the Massachusetts law that created buffer zones around abortion clinics. Despite the Supreme Court's decision striking down that law, I do not regret my vote," Brown said in a statement.

Then he went a step further, encouraging New Hampshire lawmakers to find a way to fix the law here so as to keep it in place.

258 Looks like she had 4,200,000 rounds of rifle ammo in her holds when she went down, Mike: LUSITANIA sailed with 4200 cases of Remington .303 rifle cartridges, a thousand rounds to a box, with 1250 cases of shrapnel shells, and with eighteen cases of fuzes (which Bailey and Ryan describe as nonexplosive, but that does not sound right). The shrapnel cases were officially described as non-explosive. Simpson quotes a shipping note referring to the shrapnel as "1248 cases of 3 inch Shrapnel shells filled," and refers to this as a "fairly lethal load." Patrick Beesly, seizing on the adjective "filled," assumes the official description to be a lie, and the cases to in fact be a highly explosive and dangerous load. It is difficult to see how this interpretation can be made by anyone who understands what shrapnel is; it would seem extremely obvious that a non- explosive but filled shrapnel case is by no means an oxymoron, but refers to shells containing the metallic fragments of shrapnel without the fuzes and the small gunpowder charge used to scatter the shrapnel. [Bailey and Ryan, p. 96; Simpson, p. 106, ch. 8; Beesly, pp. 113-14]

That John Prine song is a crock. You oughta look up the facts in the case: that town, Paradise, was mined out not by Peabody, but by the TVA. They destroyed the town to build the world's largest coal power plant, and because they were federal didn't have to comply with the rules that would have bound, say, Peabody, for instance.

I have driven the breadth of the county he claims was fouled, and found it rather a lovely place. You can't even hardly tell it's hell on earth.

271 Even if you're a US Senator. Notice how that stupid cunt called it "basic care", because anyone with a brain knows it has little to do with health. Posted by: Blacque Jacques Shellacque at June 30, 2014 10:39 PM (778K1) Pelosi apparently hasn''t read the warnings that come with BC pills. The ones that describe about fifty different side effects, many of which are fatal such as blood clots, uterine and cervical cancer, etc. Or IUD's, which work by irritating the lining of the uterus, making it inhospitable to an egg wanting to implant, but also create major cramps and severe bleeding. Not to mention the chances of perforation, infections, etc. Lots of women with IUD"s end up with pelvic inflammatory disease. None of this stuff is basic care. Why? Because no one really has to have sex. If you don't have sex, believe it not, you won't die. You won't develop high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid problems, or acne. It is a choice to have sex, and then it is a choice to attempt to not get pregnant from having sex. All birth control is optional, it is merely a choice and a responsibility. I'm sure SanFran Nan believes Botox is basic care.

287 192 It doesn't surprise me one bit that Cochran was involved in vote buying. I started backing up and looking for a weapon of any type, when the new neighbor came charging out into his yard and calling the dog. That dog was less than 10 feet away and snarling. The call off worked, the dog retreated, and I went inside and had a beer or seven. Thanks, neighbor!

I would have shot that dog most likely if armed. But I was on my own property and I did nothing to create the hazard in the first place.

Now compare that with a cop entering your fenced yard without a warrant due to 'exigent circumstances', and killing your dog in his natural territory. Is that really the kind of world you prefer?

310 Bill Oreilly....ugh... Can I just take a moment and share a little insight into his sense of humor? Once upon a time in the 1970s, Bill was hired as a consumer reporter at WNEP16 in Scranton. To make ends meet he took on extra duties as a gag writer and runner on the late night horror kitsch movie show... Uncle Ted's Ghoul School. Uncle Ted was a local magician that got into the trade as a form of rehab after being wounded in the war...a charmingly eccentric (and possible high octane) performer...that Bill found terribly unprofessional, due to his unwillingness to deliver Bill's expertly crafted gag lines. So Bill arranged for an on air spot sponsored by a local funeral home that was to feature Uncle Ted in a casket. Ted, being a well known claustrophobic, refused. Bill agitated until management ordered Ted to go along.... As the spot setup is underway, Bill locks Ted in the casket, leaving Ted screaming on air...Bill still says it's the funniest thing he ever did.

339 From Cory Gardner's site: http://corygardnerforsenate.com/corys-record/ Cory has promoted legislation to streamline the permitting process for renewable technologies on federal lands and supports a paid-for extension of the wind production tax credit (PTC). The GOP was right to get damaged-goods Buck to run for the House, to chill there and earn a decent record at least for the next few years. Voting for Gardner in the Senate, though, is a vote for Solyndra.

We shopped on cars.com for a used one and got a fantastic deal on a 2012 TDI SEL that was still under warranty ad is loaded. Now I actually enjoy my 100-mile-a-day commute, especially with the 44 mpg the diesel gets. And the car was made in Chattanooga by the plant that voted against the UAW. I do love the Mazdas though. Have a friend who works for them and could have gotten us an employee discount on a 6. Was a close call between that and the Passat. You will love your Mazda.

411 BTW, you might mention to commie debaters that condoms, the Pill, chemical IUDs and morning-after pills aren't covered under Ontario's "Medicare" but are paid for by the individuals. I think (physical) IUD implantation and definitely tubal ligations are covered because they involve surgery. (Vasectomies too.)

You might also mention that the wait time for a tubal ligation in the Ontario county I looked up the vasectomy info from has a six week to three month wait list for the procedure (unless you arrange it ahead of time before a birth with the doctor performing the operation directly after the birth or, disgustingly enough, after an abortion).

437 I showed up late for the last thread about becoming the party, and I need to comment. IMHO, the best thing to do in MS is write-in McDaniel. Here's why...Thad Cockring will lose. The democrat will win. Now you may think that is a bad thing, and normally it would be, but what the state and national GOP did to push him over the line is unforgivable. Dirty, rotten, underhanded, and rotten to the core. To spit in the face of your base, and court your opposition? Lowest of the low. WRITE-IN MCDANIEL Yes, there's a chance of ending 50-50 in the Senate, or even continued democrat control. Yet the party "betters" chose this low road, not the base in MS. Perhaps they should have thought of the consequences, too. Write-in McDaniel. Don't stay home on election day. The GOP needs to understand that their base is active. When election results are tabulated, there will be NO doubt why things ended poorly for Thaddeus. Write in McDaniel. There will be a message sent about betrayal. You want a head on a pike? Write in McDaniel. Machiavelli rhetorically asked if it was better to be feared, or loved. Send a message. Write-in McDaniel /rant off

Yeah, I read it the same way. Too bad some rich TPer doesn't just pony up $20k to get this guy to tell his story, but he's definitely angling for some dough.

And no, there is no way I vote for Thad in the general election. I'll point out an additional reason besides the 'send a message' one -- By all accounts, 2016 has a shit pile of vulnerable Repubs defending their seats. So even if we barely regain the Senate in 2014, chances are good that we relose it in 2016. So, two whole years of Senate control, but not with enough of a majority to overrule anything TFG vetoes.

I'd rather the GOPe gets a message NOW.

Posted by: chique d'afrique (the artist formerly known as african chick) at July 01, 2014 12:42 AM (r+7wo) *** Understood. American pets like dogs and cats are considered family members, as they have personalities. This is why you are seeing so much objection to putting a .22 behind the ear of a pet/family member, personally. 508 Just my two cents in here....I love animals, and greatly dislike putting them down. But I recognize that this is sometimes necessary. Further, I also know that there are crystallizing moments when you go along with something, you excuse it again, you didn't get a clear look -- and then something trivial makes it obvious that you have a problem [happens in auditing all the time.....and some might think the Cochran situation in MS is one such for the RNSC]. Further, I don't think a properly administered bullet is any more-or-less merciful than a trip downtown to a vet to get The Shot.

But there's something else going here, too. I was jolted by the anecdote and went through a whole lot of disquieting speculation myself. But, then, I got to thinking -- this is the guy who was there. Out of all the incidents in his life, this one hit him hard enough to remember it....and blurt it out here.

So, yeah, I got upset about it....but I'm not going to condemn him for doing what he did, because he was obviously upset, himself. And I'm not going to second-guess him for what he did, 'cause he was there and knows more of the facts and circumstances.

What I will say is, "that really sucks, buddy."

Lots of things that faw down go boom are falling out of the sky.

The Israelis have designed and built a very tricky small smart glide bomb that is able to find and destroy a single particular vehicle with a high value target inside, in heavy traffic in an urban center, with next to no collateral damage other than to those inside the one vehicle. One day as we were driving past, we saw a chain of women with the first attached to a dude. Then there was that one time we watched one chase a hapless fellow off a tree. When I was quite young they came into our house in the city once. I was terrified. Those were Yoruba ones and IIRC you gave them money. Where I'm all for the Israelis sharing the pain, I've always wondered why they've never dialed-it-up to 11. Hamas calls for the extinction of the Israelis, why isn't flying a Hamas flag a reason to JDAM a building? Why allow a Hamas Parliament -- wouldn't it be efficient to wait until they're in session and JDAM the chambers? If Hamas runs a government, why isn't every government building, installation, or employee a legitimate target? After all, they could always take a sick day or resign.....

When a city announces "we abhor and denounce Hamas, and all their people and policies," and can substantiate that by keeping 'em off the streets, then you stop bombing that city. I mean, that's the way it's worked for 10,000 years of recorded history -- why did it stop working in 1948?!?

I make no claim to being ultra-keenly attuned to Israeli-US politics, but I commented a couple of months ago that it sure looked to me as though Obama and Kerry were sick of Netanyahu and were trying to game the situation so as to get a more peacenik Israeli politician installed in his seat.

(I specifically mentioned Tzipi Livni as their apparent favored dovish alternative.)

630 @603, @607.....look, I could go all psychoanalytical on you and listen to every incident that BBD ever gave you a butthurt, but can we get beyond the cattiness for a bit?

BBD read fwb's stripped-down narrative as "1 + 2 = 6". I read it as something that stood out in fwb's memory -- that [in his view] he had a problem dog that he was trying to mend, but it wasn't getting mended.....until, finally, it showed itself to be a danger to others and he dealt with it as needed.

But it's not BBD's fault that she read it the way she did -- those were the words on the page.....and, just like "1 + 2 = 6", it didn't make sense. First time biter, first time shitter -- you don't kill a dog for that. And, mind you, it's an upsetting-enough scenario for anyone.

For all that is decent and right -- if you want to attack BBD for her past crimes and transgressions, start fresh on some other day. Work on getting fwb's dog story tamped down to rationality tonight for everyone here.

Having the vet take your animal's life DOES introduce a degree of separation. The same degree of separation that having someone else butcher your meat does.  Doesn't make you a more moral actor by any means.  Lotsa people who just don't have the stones to do something like to front that they are to moral to do it instead.

Mack the Knife wore gloves you know... didn't make him a good guy in reality, tho he was convinced.

Whether you drop a live lobster in the pot of boiling water yourself or if you pay someone else to do it for you I still think it's monstrous.  You're not more moral to pay someone else to do it.  You don't escape moral culpibility by having someone else do it in your name.

640 I'd have been on sooner had my internet connection been on the shitter all day. Anyway... Transformers: Age Of Extinction In brief... If a movie could kick ass and suck ass all at once this would be a good example of one. The kick ass? The action. Michael Bay is still the reigning king of action movies. Shit blows up real good when Michael Bay is behind the camera. While not as nightmarishly insane as the action in Trans 3 it was still purty awesome. The suck ass? The story and character. Look, when your characters make Shiksa The Beef in the previous three movies look like a fully realized human being you've got a problem. I didn't care for any of them. I couldn't have given a flying feck about them. Oh, the hot women were hot and Mark Wahlberg looks cool weilding a gun-sword/sword-gun thingy but why anyone did what they did is beyond me. *Shrugs* Oh well. I'd recommend it only if you were already looking forward to it because you know what to expect. If you didn't care or hate Michael Bay...well, no reason to see this. After much generosity...3/5 stars.

I will be in touch with the vet tomorrow, for sure. BTW, I have passed through Browning, MT on several occasions, and it is indeed the Wild West, as Bill describes it. I respectfully disagree. While I think @591 and @607 were worthy of retraction, I can see @626 as further evidence that fwb's actions were necessary -- and, while not in direct response to @421, responsive to that point.

A news story that I read when I was young really hit me hard -- an unscrupulous dog-breeder in the San Fernando Valley had managed to create a kennel of Saint Bernards that were psychotically anti-social, to the point where so many of the families that adopted puppies were getting injured that the authorities seized the operation and culled the lot [this was, IIRC, the inspiration for Stephen King's "Cujo"]. There are puppies whose eyes haven't even opened yet that need to be put down.

But the great majority of bad dogs are trained that way [*spits* at thought of Michael Vick]....and the duty to put one's pet down is tainted by the thought that the same person may have trained the animal to be a danger.

But fwb didn't train this dog. And, like I said, I wasn't there. But when the total pattern of what you know hits the red-alert button, you act accordingly.

707 "Nothing, really. I think it was a bored teen from the condos behind my neighborhood."

Dangerous habit for a teenager to pick up, nosing round other people's places after dark. Lots of ways for that to not end well.

"I did take time today to relocate a motion sensor floodlights above the garage door."

I'm a big fan of motion sensors.

For a time, we had unknown individuals coming and stealing recyclables from our outdoor can. I put in a sensor light in the nova-class output range, which burned silhouettes of said intruders into the asphalt. This got rid of them. (People a block over complained when that light came on, not kidding.)

I also bought a sprinkler head with a motion sensor on it.

That is intended to scare away nuisance animals. It does. Only for a few times, though, and they learn to ignore it. But it is amazingly brilliant for getting humans to go away. Wait, what's that sound? Chuk-chuk-chuk? Oh shit! I'm getting soaked! Run!

Our UPS and FedEx guys did complain that the thing fired on them in daylight. They're good blokes and treat our deliveries respectfully. I don't want to alienate them.

I think that when I set it up again, I'll rig it for night ops only. It runs on batteries. I'll put in a dummy battery holder, fed on light gauge wire from a transformer at the house, and put the transformer on a 24 hour timer.

Posted by: torquewrench at June 30, 2014 10:20 PM (noWW6)

708 @642 Transformers: Age Of Extinction --------------------- I enjoyed it. I've heard complaints that it's a bit long, and I understand why people might feel that way. It's got a long running time. And even though I didn't mind the length myself, I did start to become aware of it. I've also got a sneaking suspicion that at least one plot arc was cut, as one of the characters seems to appear and disappear more or less at random. On the plus side, there weren't any of the stupid slapstick humor moments that the earlier films had. i.e. no Bumblebee bumping his head on the ceiling. No Autobots accidentally destroying the concrete in the backyard. Etc... There was still some humor, but it felt more natural. There were also some obvious sequel hooks this time around, suggesting that Bay plans to integrate the next few films more closely together (iirc, he's stated that this film is the first in a new trilogy) than was the case with the original three movies (which were more or less independent stories with recurring characters).

To answer your question Maet I was doing it because in a lot of ways people have just become vicious towards each other here, especially against new people, delurkers and people with divergent opinions, especially on the daythreads.  It seems like it has become a sort of sport here to act towards other posters in a way which normal people would never act towards other guests in someone else's home.  It's sad to see the transformation, it's not a positive change, and as you can see with your own eyes (see Anna's comment above) I'm not the only person noticing it tho I have indeed been the one most vocal in trying to ensure it gets quashed.

I have been an advocate for trying to keep the conversation open to as many legitimate contributors as possible, and trying to reduce the barriers to new posters and delurkers. That's been my motivation and I'm not ashamed of it.

I'm sorry to see the delight you seem to take in wielding the banhammer. I, as I have said on numerous occasions, held you in much higher esteem. I wasn't kissing your ass. Not my style at all.

I have a LONG track record of very positive and productive contributions here.  What's that worth?  I just wonder what role all this negativity has played in the exodus of so many greats we used to so enjoy like Purp and Jake just to name the most recent and productive on the ONT. It bothered me to see the maliciousness grow like it also bothered many other people, and what I posted was motivated by a desire to keep this place a great place to be for great people.  If that's whining and bitching to you well we disagree.

I just don't do threats well.  All the shitty bullshit that's gone down here and you come after ME? Oh well.

Thanks cooth for your kind words I've really enjoyed our time together and I hope you didn't take the bebe thing wrong. You're a good guy.

I should really work up something for the weekend gardening thread about defensive gardening. I learned it back in school in Santa Barbara -- of all places -- where Carissa (Natal plum) is frequently used as a decorative hedge. I can't expect 95% of the country to know about it, 'cause it doesn't take frost -- but this is a pretty bush that makes barbed-wire look like giant cotton poof-balls [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carissa ]. Oddly enough, people don't trample shortcuts through carissa plantings.

Similarly, in parts of SoCal that have frosts, people have hedges of pyracantha -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyracantha -- which is otherwise known as 'firethorn'.

A lot of classic gardens have roses growing alongside fences. A lot of people believe that this enhances the beauty of the fence....while it's somewhat obvious that it enhances the security.

And, finally, one of my favorites -- it is too freakin' easy to grow a berry bramble alongside a wall or fence.....and it doesn't take much to make that completely impassible. Plus, if you leave space to get close but not in....you get berries!

just wonder what role all this negativity has played in the exodus of so many greats we used to so enjoy like Purp and Jake just to name the most recent and productive on the ONT.

What a load of horseshit.  You're just spewing crap to fit your view.  Purp has disappeared before, and based on his penchant to search the IPs of people pissing him off and mention if they're posting from work that "negativity" you claim is something he was doing.  Jake left because of getting into it with ace.  Nothing to do with any commenters.

717 >>>> I also bought a sprinkler head with a motion sensor on it.

"What brand?"

Drat, I can't remember off the top of my head.

Without rummaging in the garage, and with an assist from the powerful intertoobz, I think it is the Contech Scarecrow.

719 "I should really work up something for the weekend gardening thread about defensive gardening."

Yes! This is a hugely underlooked avenue of security.

I occasionally muse about mounting long shallow boxes under windows, with thorny vines. The sort of thing that would be difficult for a prospective intruder trying to climb up from the ground, but that would be easy enough to jump out over from above if evacuating the house in a fire.

Fell into a thicket of wait-a-bit when a piece of ravine trail crumbled under me.

I was incredibly lucky to have been able to climb back up out instead of having to force passage. And I was wearing a leather jacket that took the brunt. It was badly chewed up. Plants are mean! Waaah!

Plants are your friends. And you should always deploy your friends in ways that they can help you out.

Remember Sunflowers in the back.  Walnuts up front.  Watch out for the tunnelers so always have a few back shooters.

723 It looks like we'll be doing Nisene Marks next weekend. This would be our second visit, and we both delighted and scared-the-crap out of ourselves on the first visit (we had been hiking all day, and were shaky and sore on the trail, and hit a stretch of trail abutting a 100' sheer drop -- and the alternative was a 5-hour backtrack with 3 remaining hours of daylight). Frankly, I suspect Castle Rock was worse....but Nisene Marks looms larger in memory because of the sense of betrayal -- beauty, beauty, beauty, beauty, *DANGEROUS*.....

724 When we move, I want a holly hedge next to the driveway. I just think the spiked leaves and dark green look badass next to the asphalt.

725 OK, I know you're all crazy, but I've really got to go to bed. Someone has to support the LIVs, works beckons. But at least today I got off the hook for paying for some abortificents.

It bothered me to seethe maliciousnessgrow like it alsobothered many other people, and what I posted was motivated by a desire to keep this place a great place to be for great people.

MAx -- I've got to be totally honest here.....you frequently have the Peter Lorre roles on AoSHQ threads. That can get you arrested at Rick's Cafe Americain, or banned most anywhere else. I don't want to be the one that gets you banned, but your behavior is your own affair.

727 So I bought a belt sander yesterday.  That's my big news.

Actually the thing is freaking awesome, that is, if you need to sand stuff.  Which I do.  Well did.

Now I have to paint it.

Looks like I missed some actual news yesterday, what happened?

729 Cthulhu, the Peter Lorre role?  You do know what role he had in Fritz Lang's movie M don't you?  Although in the movie The Verdict with Sydney Greenstreet he was a tipsy accessory to murder.

730 Despite her law degree, Elizabeth Warren is clearly a stupid woman. She didn't read the SCOTUS decision or understand it and she thinks not wanting to pay for abortion inducing drugs is a "vague moral objection"? Honey, woman who work at Hobby Lobby can still get sixteen methods of birth control. She's the second coming of Barack Obama. There are some subjects I won't bring up on my whiteboard signs because I worry about the freak outs from tolerant loving leftists. The Hobby Lobby decision is one of them..

732 Your values: "Vague moral objections." Pray tell, what label does Sen. Warren give HER values? Bet it doesn't contain the word "vague".
