Overnight Open Thread (5-31-2014) - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

Our friend, Joe, otherwise known as CDR M, is off celebrating his birthday tonight, no doubt unwrapping the new puppy that his little ones thought he might need.

Let's all wish him the heartiest, happiest birthday ever.

In the meantime, you're stuck with me, and my potluck. I'm feeling rather linkyish tonight, so link-stew it is:

Kicking off the Caturday link-stew is the cutest, most determined little cat who ever lived. Meet Clark Gable, otherwise known as Bella:

RIP, my Bella.

You had to know that with all the media attention focused on the VA scandal, the Feds would be forced to take action. It seems they have a plan.

"I just boogie!" says 82-year old Iron Nun who has completed more than 340 triathlons.

You've gotta love 'er.

You know those fancy observation decks at the Sears Willis Tower? The ones that I will never, ever step foot upon? Yeah... about that:

Have no fear! It was only the "protective coating" which couldn't withstand the weight.

For no particular reason:

The National Spelling Bee has resulted in a tie. It's the first such result in 50 years.

(CNN) -- Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe correctly spelled so many words Thursday that the Scripps National Spelling Bee had to declare them both winners.

Why? Because there weren't enough words left on the competition's list for them to keep facing off until only one was left standing.

In the bee's final round, Hathwar, 14, an eighth-grader from Painted Post, New York, correctly spelled the word "stichomythia" -- dialogue especially of altercation delivered by two actors.

Sujoe, 13, a seventh-grader from Fort Worth, Texas, correctly spelled the word "feuilleton" -- part of a European newspaper.
Must-see moments from the spelling bee

It's the first time the bee has ended in a tie in more than 50 years. The last time there were co-champions was in 1962, organizers said. Ties also ended the bees in 1950 and 1957.
This year's spelling bee champ is .... Spelling bee runs out of ... words?

"It feels pretty good because not only do I get the victory, but I get to share it with someone else, so it means a lot to me," Sujoe told CNN's "New Day" on Friday.

A pretty amazing attitude, eh?

Congrats to both the winners and to all who competed.

More on #YesAllWomen. He's such a sensitive fella.

Men are surging with far more aggression-stoking testosterone than women, but they are brought up in a way that makes them uniquely ill-suited to manage anger, sadness or any emotion at all. Consequently, and contrary to popular stereotypes, women are more likely to have constructive ways to deal with difficult emotions and men's emotions are often out of control. It is therefore not surprising that men are much more likely to be involved in violent crime, including but not limited to sexual crime. It is also not surprising that men are four times more likely to commit suicide than women.

And so the rape problem, the gun violence problem and the suicide problem are all in many respects different facets of the same problem, different symptoms of the same disease: Men are never taught how to deal with difficult emotions, and so they take it out on other people or themselves.

Of course, treating a disease often requires treating symptoms, which is why it is crucial to continue taking steps such as raising male awareness about sexual violence and dealing with firearms. But if we want to address the underlying causes of these issues, then part of the solution must be to construct a healthier form of masculinity that empowers men to deal with complex emotions in positive ways.

Wait. Did he just refer to the state of being a man as a "disease"?

40 Our sweet kitty named Bella passed away late last summer. The day she passed I brought her to the Vets and asked if they knew of any kittens up for adoption. They told me to come back that afternoon. I did, was presented with two kittens, one fluffy black/silver/white longhair, the other a textbook Siamese, both only 4 weeks old, forcing a choice. I chose the Siamese, and told them to give me a little time. The next morning I picked up the black/silver guy. He's currently bathing himself in the crook of my arm. The Siamese is asleep at my feet. Omaha and Duke.

Men act like men because they are not women, and that is not a "social construct" but a result of biological reality. We used to have mores and values that channeled these male traits into constructive ends and away from destructive ones. The sad thing is that no matter how much all that is destroyed by the minions of the Left, it will still be blamed by those minions.

83 I have a cat that showed up as an abandoned feral kitten, from the local cat ladies. He moved in with me and was always (and still is) painfully thin, and the only thing he wanted was to cuddle. The vet diagnosed him as positive for FIV, said he'd only live 6 months, and suggested putting him down. I said no (I regretted putting other cats down way too much). Now, 4 years later, he sits in my lap and bites my fingers when I type and chases and tortures to death birds. He won't let me pick him up in the house but outside in the yard he likes to be carried around. He and my other black tom like to roll around in the yard trying to strangle each other. Cats.

95 Bella's owner uploaded another video with an explanation of why he looked liked a drunk little kitty:

Bella was my best buddy. His licensed name was Clark gable but we started calling him Bella before we knew he was a male. Bella was born with a congenital defect which created a severe balance disorder. The doctors said he'd never walk. And when he did, they said he'd never run. He fooled them all by not only learning to walk and run, but by learning to climb stairs and get up on furniture as well. He was the neighborhood mascot and everyone was inspired by his determination.

Jet fuel leaking into the Shawsheen river, toxic smoke blowing into neighboring towns. As far as Berdahl goes it disturbs me when one says prisoner of war (POW). What WAR? War on terrorism? Over seas contingency operation (per TFG)? The Taliban have no uniforms no nothing. In fact, if I may, he was a hostage(whether willing or not). Just a irk of mine so to speak.

I followed this for awhile and then it got put to the wayside. His father was not who I see now with retweeting the Taliban and saying shit and stuff. Yes, the Taliban has a twitter account ie;The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. BUT...who did this exchange was the PAKISTAM-Taliban not the Afghan Taliban. As Brad Thor mentions the Haggani taliban like money (and young boys/girls) and why the hell did TFG do this?

male suicidal tendency?

Sometimes I try to do things
And it just doesn't work out the way I want it to
And I get real frustrated, and like I try hard to do it,
And I take my time, but it just doesn't work out the way I want it to
It's like I concentrate on it real hard
But it just doesn't work out
And everything I do and everything I try
It never turns out, it's like, I need time to figure these things out
But there's always someone there going, "Hey Null, you know, we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately, you know? You should maybe get away, and like, maybe you should talk about it you'll feel a lot better"
And I go, "No it's okay, you know, I'll figure it out, just leave me alone, I'll figure it out, you know? I'm just working on myself"
They go, "Well you know, if you want to talk about it, I'll be here, you know, and you'll probably feel a lot better if you talk about it. So why don't you talk about it?"
And I go, "NO I don't want to, I'm okay! I'll figure it out myself!"
But they just keep bugging me, they just keep bugging me and it builds up inside...

Unless it explicitly states that you pay for the permit fees separately, stick to your guns & don't give them an extra dime. That should be built in to the quote. my guess is they tried to save that permit money, and then got caught somehow, and want to stick you with it. For that, I would demand they pay for your roses, too.

Carol,

I work for a BBB award winning roofing contractor.  Two Pinnacle Awards in the past three years, and runner-up in the off year, and the one before..... four awards, consecutive.

So, when I tell you that Shredded Chi has it exactly right.  HE.  HAS.  IT.  EXACTLY.  RIGHT.

Your insulation contractor, seems to have been caught in Carneyesque Flagramento, by the local building inspector.  Check their office to see if your contractor was cited for such on your jobsite.  If they were, that's all the proof you need that they're just trying to roll-off the costs to you.

Although not foolproof.........Angie's List and the BBB can usually point you to the better contractors in your area.  Go with the Award Winners from each.  You won't get cheap bids.  You WILL get competent and qualified contractors.

330 "carol you need a permit to add insulation to your walls? that is stupid"

In this part of Commiefornia, you have to pull a permit now simply to PAINT your walls. Carol out in Massachusetts is getting off easy.

Carol, in re the contractor's assertion that insulation will keep animals out of "empty spaces": I've never seen any form of insulation that some or another kind of critter won't tunnel their way into in order to nest. They like insulation, as it keeps their younguns warm.

All possible openings into wall cavities have to be sealed with heavy metal mesh to keep larger critters out, and then behind that, thin screens to keep insects out.

The screens need to be separated from the mesh by enough space that an animal clawing or gnawing the mesh won't damage the screen. The mesh shouldn't have any holes larger than roughly a nickel. Bigger than that and a determined mouse will get in.

It is a lovely work, but I've gotten so fed-up with the concert experience that I probably wouldn't have gone. It's sad, really -- the piece is meant to be enjoyed in a hall with others, so you can all synchronize breathing and have a group experience with live acoustics.

I tend to just write those sorts of things from scratch instead of repurposing earlier work, for just that reason. Too easy to miss something that should change but was left alone.

Failing that, dig up a friend who is an obsessive grammar and punctuation and spelling fetishist and hand them a copy before it all goes out the door.

I did that once and she gave it back saying, perfect, except of course at the end of the third paragraph, i before e except after c, and it's not "recieved".

And, FFS, of course I know the correct spelling, but your brain sees what your brain expects to see, and I expected to have spelled the word correctly, and that's what I subjectively saw. It's that second pair of eyes who don't know what to expect who will spot those things for you.

It's called a "punch list", and every contractor expects one from every savvy client. Make a list, make it thorough, and tell 'em that final payment depends on EVERYTHING on it being fixed.

I once held back $250 for a faucet. The guy was going, "it's only $80 of work to do, why are you holding back $250????" And I replied, "because if it's $170 of profit, you should be happy to do it."

I'm thinking of using froglube on my mill. Any thoughts? The problem is that I'll abandon the thing for months, use it a bit, and abandon it again -- and froglube sounds like it's a good option (being for firearms that are stored, used for a bit, then stored again).

The problem is to be always available at a moment's notice, but no guarantee for maintenance -- and a magazine suggested using a gun product on a lathe. From there, I went to hobbyist torture-tests of gun products (including spraying with saltwater in some cases). It really looks good for preserving a "stand-ready" condition without periodic maintenance requirements.....just like you might want a gun to "stand-ready" without dorking around with it all the time.

455 The problem is to be always available at a moment's notice, but no guarantee for maintenance -- ... That's tough, and to my limited knowledge not done, and not usually tried. The US Government uses lots of cosmoline, and most heavy machinery is packed as your mill was, for a reason: long-term rust prevention. My understanding is that moisture, and particularly condensing moisture, is the biggest danger. Climate-control is part of the plan. The back of a dark garage is usually cold and somewhat humid. A heavy duck canvas cover will help a lot, as it will keep dirt, dust, etc., from settling on the metal parts, will tend to keep humidity away (if there is enough oil under it), and can be removed quickly ... but any condensing moisture will eventually work its magic, and you will find out too late. Covering all of the ways with SAE 140, then putting the mill back in its crate, throwing in some desiccant, sealing the crate, etc. ... the mill might be almost instantly useable when removed. There's some risk here, and I do not know of any studies. Maybe this will work. Perhaps lubing all the ways, then covering them tightly with oil-soaked heavy cloth, then desiccant, then sealing or covering with canvas ... sounds sort of like a fire hazard, although SAE 20 and SAE 140 aren't particularly flammable.

Hmmm....I need to think about a "mill cosy" [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_cosy ] ....but I'm thinking I'm on the right track. Clean all the shipping goo off, apply long-term protectant from the gun world, then lubricate on use. A couple of months in, unwrap and squirt a bit of oil in the works, and I should be good to go.

464 ... apply long-term protectant from the gun world, then lubricate on use. A couple of months in, unwrap and squirt a bit of oil in the works, and I should be good to go. You might want to do some research on the products. There is a potential "chemical compatibility issue" that you might face: what does the combination of "long-term protectant from the gun world" and 20W oil do while you're not looking? I suspect that there will be no problem, although you will likely need to strip the gun-protectant from the mill before use. It may cause the oil to run off too quickly and therefore leave the ways rubbing against each other. You might be better off coating the ways with oil, then covering with a custom-fitted canvas cover, like a dust cover for photographic printers. I think leaving some room for air circulation might be better, but a complete cover and desiccant ... 2 points on a pareto chart, but no data values for either ... which one to choose ...

Not kidding: the automotive aftermarket have graduated from car covers to entire car envelopes. You lay down a flat piece on the driveway or garage floor, drive the car onto it, then zip around the entire perimeter of the flat piece a shaped top cover enclosing the entire vehicle.

Coat the entire works with a heavy layer of cosmoline and plutonium and DDT, put it in a giant mylar sack, suck out all the air. and seal. Put that in a second mylar sack, pump in nitrogen, and seal. Two meters of rebar-reinforced concrete, then take off and nuke the entire site from orbit, just to be sure. You can't be too careful.

I hate valets!  Why is it that when they are in the car for like a minute or maybe three, they always find it necessary to change the radio and the seat position?   I hate people messing with my stuff, why can't I park my damn car?

And don't get me started about the guy who always wants to take my bag when I am checking in at hotels.  No I do not want you to take my bag.  I moved it 600 fucking miles myself, I can damned well take it from the lobby to the room.

Arrrrgh.  Sorry, pet peeve.

Hope you are well this morning Carol!   :-)

Had he told his companions he would? Unless he was under orders, or under medication that warped his rational thought process. Who knows. That our personnel were ordered to do a "Saving Private Ryan" routine attempting to retrieve a deserter is bad enough.
