Overnight Open Thread (31 Jan 2014)

I still can't believe the GOP is actually trying to come up with an immigration deal (which does not make any sense) when they should be focusing on jobs which would win votes, at least from current U.S. citizens.

Whatever. It's Friday. Get a drink and dive right in to the ONT. Weaponized Flatulence

Police Sketch Artist

Seriously, how much money does a police sketch artist make 'cuz I think I can draw about as good as the above sketch. Man with the bowling ball for a head in police custody.

So You Want To Fly A Plane...

Pretty sweet camera footage but should not give you the sweats like those crazy Ukrainian dudes hanging by their fingertips from building ledges and cranes do.

I'm sure I'm guilty of harassment for posting an article about an Air Force First Lieutenant that is also a Seahawk Cheerleader. I think former Eagles cheerleader Rachel Washburn would beat Alicia though in hand to hand combat.

School Closure Map

I guess some areas of the south could've used this map before the big snow/ice storm hit. Map shows how much snow is needed in your state before it closes. I know here in the Hampton Roads area, my kids have missed 5 days of school from the last two snow storms.

20 CDR, mine is 110 feet off the road. I got 9 - 10 inches here. Took me two days with a regular flat garden shovel. That doesn't include the run I had to make for the dog (min-pin) because the snow was up to his ears.

I have a feeling tonight's ONT will go some way toward bringing a tiny bit of closure to those who knew Joffen well. At least I hope so.

That said, I never had a whole lot of interaction with Joffen, unlike many of the longtime commenters here. But, for what it's worth, I am deeply sorry to hear about his passing and the anguish it's causing his friends here at the HQ.

79 We've missed 4 days of school already this month in Chicagoland. All for cold temperatures, not snow. We've had plenty of snow, but that's been dealt with. They're closing school now for negative temps. Jan. 6 was -18F with -50F wind chill. That was seriously cold. But the recent 2 days this week were only -5 to 0F. I think the kids would have been OK to go to school.

You should be able to get a 5,000 watt generator for about $600. Check Costco. They're all the same. Four stroke engine attached to a generator.

Then buy a manual transfer switch so that you can route the power to wherever you need it in the house. And run the cable to a plug outside, so you don't have to worry about running it through windows or doors when you need the generator.

It will cost a bit, but if you can do the wiring (simple, simple stuff) yourself it will be just in your budget

138 One more point about generators that I got from a pro: the key factor in calculating your wattage needs is "motor loads." 162 The Eighth Canine Commandment: 8. Before you scold me for being un-cooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Story time: I have cats, not dogs, but I assure you they are very capable of registering complaints. I live in a split-level home, and a few years ago I had to have some work done on the ground-floor level. That is where I normally keep the litter boxes. While the workmen were there, I temporarily moved the litter boxes into the kitchen and closed the door to the downstairs level. When I returned home from work, I found a turd on the kitchen floor outside the litter box. I cleaned it up and went to work the next day. That night there was a turd on the floor in the upstairs hall in front of my bedroom. Fortunately, the workmen were finished and I was able to put the litter boxes back where they belonged. There is no doubt in my mind that if it had gone on for a third day, the next turd would have been on my pillow. Kira did not like having the litter boxes in the kitchen, and she let me know it in no uncertain terms.

181 "I know here in the Hampton Roads area, my kids have missed 5 days of school from the last two snow storms."

Yeah, but two of those were already planned teacher in-service and work days planned in case it snowed - because if it snows here, it will snow around the last week in January.

Good news! The Hickory Middle School robotics team came in 5th out of 19 last week at a competition on NSU against all high school teams. We ended up 4th seed and lost to the #1 seed in the semifinal elimination match. The very first time these kids have ever competed in robotics. I'm so proud I could burst.

If any of you know someone who struggles with it and are having a hard time grasping what they're going through, I highly recommend getting a copy of William Styron's Darkness Visible. It really helped me to understand what I was going through, myself.

Each of the 32 teams then gets taxed on its own.

Is your hot water gas or electric? I once ran my gas water heater off a computer UPS. The exhaust blower and solenoid totaled about 500W, I think? 238 I posted this quote this morning A phenomenon that a number of people have noted while in deep depression is the sense of being accompanied by a second self — a wraithlike observer who, not sharing the dementia of his double, is able to watch with dispassionate curiosity as his companion struggles against the oncoming disaster, or decides to embrace it. There is a theatrical quality about all this, and during the next several days, as I went about stolidly preparing for extinction, I couldn't shake off a sense of melodrama — a melodrama in which I, the victim-to-be of self-murder, was both the solitary actor and lone member of the audience.” ¯ William Styron, Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness

258 I recommend that when questioned by anyone on whether you possess a weapon or not, that you carefully and calmly, LIE and say NO.

Getting upset or your back up at being questioned will most likely be take as a yes answer and also causing the person asking to question your emotional control.

The smaller organs of gov't use local information more often than the larger and can be very disrupting because they're local.

Even if you have none, you cold still invite speculation and unwelcome attention by LE.

Also recommend that you keep your information hidden or understated to your neighbors (no matter how long you've known them), your doctors, your children's teachers and pretty much anyone who isn't family (and maybe some of those).

Time to think proactively is now, not when they announce they will be doing searches based on information received.

When I lived in an apartment, my neighbor had a cat named Chloe. I would sometimes cat-sit when the neighbor was away. Chloe had three kittens, and I continued to cat-sit all of them, up to the point where they were about six months old and nearly full grown. Between the four of them, two were long-haired and two were short-haired. There was one male and three females. All were black. They were all related, of course, and lived together. Their personalities were absolutely unique and individual. They were as different from each other as night and day. I still marvel at that.

Brother.

I offer this.  I lost one of my closest in a murder/suicide.  I spent hours on the phone beforehand, not 2 days prior saying "Do NOT go near that guy!"

I did everything.  I've retraced my steps a thousand times over the last two years, and I cannot find fault with anything I did or didn't do.  I did everything I could.  At the end of the day, you can only do so much.  Logically, you know you did it right.

Emotionally, survivor's guilt is still there.

It doesn't make sense, and there's no fixing it.

Just is what it is.

Press on and apply the wisdom to the next time you're needed.  All you can do.

Uninteruptable Power Supply. AKA a "battery backup". It worked fine, but only for about 2 hours and then the battery was dead. I have a generator now, but I don't have a transfer switch. The few times I've used it, I've just backfed into both phases. I definitely recommend the transfer switch, though. The most crucial things were the fridge and the water heater. But I found it was nice to have some lights and the TV too.

282 I want you morons to know what a special group you are. Seriously. When I first started reading Ace, a few years ago as I do not remember, someone (do not remember who, apparently I am a senile aging super-model) threatened to take their life. Folks here got the email and somehow phoned family and there was a very good outcome.

For those of you who are friends of Joffen, I am sure he loved you. Sometimes, no matter if they know they are loved, the pain they cannot escape. Death brings guilt, even for those left behind by illness (or, in my brother's case, a sudden stroke had me thinking: "Could I have been a better sister? Could I have called him more? etc). I do know this: if you love someone and/or he/she is your friend or brother or loved one, they do not want you to grieve for them but to live your own life better.

I am so sorry for those who knew him. You are good people. I may only be a "fractional" moron, as I just pop in now and then and talk to myself...but I do know when I see a familiar name there is a connection, and I have seen this name and it saddens me. My prayers are for you as well as his family. xoxo

286 "I know suicide is a sin, but I trust God's mercy." There is a strain of thought that those who contemplate/attempt/succeed at suicide are not, at that moment, rational. As for the dumbing down of schools, it's been happening for decades. Back when I was in school each grade had A-classes through F-classes. A-class students were in advanced classes, B-class students were somewhat advanced, etc... down to F-class which were behind the rest of the classes in progress. We didn't ever judge the kids in the D,E,F classes. Heck if they were cute, who cared?! The division of classes as they were meant that the advanced students did not experience boredom and apathy and the slower students did not drop out due to an inability to keep up. It helped to prevent resentment as well. It worked. That system no longer exists because, you know, self-esteem.

The ice/snow was cleared off enough that I was able to make the run from West Central Georgia to West Tennessee yesterday. I got to the hospital about 7:35PM and Dad passed about 20 minutes after I arrived. Evidently he had been waiting for me. *** God Bless, Country Singer. It is a Blessing that you were able to make it there and that your dad held on for you. As painful as it is now, you will cherish those minutes the rest of your life.

Easy crusher.  I have Nero's ashes still in the car.  They said they made a paw print.

Background:

he was a 14 yr old g shep.  Survived bloat.  HGE  (hemorrhagic gastro enteritis), both of which have 20% survival rates, during his lifetime.  He was a warrior, and my best friend.

I could barely muster the courage to pick up his ashes.

Years ago, some asshole shot my Arab horse, Misha.  She died in a ditch.

So I know loss.  Quite familar with it.

You know that little thing, Benghazi?  Glen and I were working on a book and I talked with him 2 weeks before we died, and I was giving him shit about how he got his arm broken on a bike ride in NYC because his situation awareness wasn't up to par.

But.  You don't "fuck you" people here.

It's not polite.

364 Just got back from my mother's 94th. Depressing conversation. 1. We are $17 trillion in debt. 2. The economy is underperforming so badly that the Fed has to use the extraordinary combo of 0% interest rates and quantitative easing to prop it up to mediocrity; meanwhile the latter appears to have created a stock bubble. 3. We have two Americas, now that we have stopped making things and become an information/marketing culture. The gap between these two Americas will continue to widen because not everyone is capable of landing a bullshitting job in a "global corporation." 4. Government is metastasizing. 5. We have a 2-term president who hates his own country and thinks of America in faculty-lounge terms of "empire." 6. This same anti-American president is abandoning our allies and bowing down to our sworn enemies. 7. The Left continues with the AGW putsch even when the actual temperatures have flatlined. 8. The irrational war on carbon energy continues even while the US is awash in it. 9. Our Thomas the Tank Engine President continues to babble wide-eyed about "high-speed trains." 10. Teh ghey--they will never stop the assault until the first amendment is abandoned and churches are forced to grovel. 11. Teh "war on women"--guess what; it's really a war on men. 12. Lady Gaga & the culture. Rant over.

370 "The GOP immigration deal makes no sense" because you are looking at it wrong.

Here's the trick:  THERE IS NO DEAL!  Not only was Boehner reportedly "unenthusiastic" over the "priniciples," he told Rep. Fleming that he was not committed to bringing ANY IR bill to a vote this year.

Now, if you get your news from the NYT, WaPo, or Talking Points Memo, you may have a different understanding of what happened.  Apparently many conservatives get their news from those sources, oddly enough, since they are going nuts over the prospect yet again.

Aren't you tired of going through the Annual "Boehner's Imminent Immigration Betrayal" frenzy?

You see - you may wish to sit down for this - sometimes politicians say things to please one group of constituents even though there is no chance of actually following through.  It's just for PR.  This keeps the Chamber appeased, doesn't get the Latino groups worked up against us, and keeps Democratic attacks to a minimum as long as they think we are "working on it."

And there is no real risk of ticking off the Tea Party folks, because they stay ticked off at leadership anyway.

I have to wonder if all our negativity about the future of our corner of the world didnt have an impact or an impression on Joffen. I actually try to be more sensitive saying some stuff around HR now that I know it hurts her. Whether it should or not is irrelevant at the moment. But I think I should've known Joffen would be hypersensitive to some of the things I casually say here; things that could trigger cues.

Another problem was the timing. If it had been an overnight snowfall, there would have been no traffic problems, but the snow happening during the day meant that people would leave work and cause bad traffic to become worse since everyone decided to leave at once.

Y'all made the right decision and your Daddy is at peace. Five years ago this month we went through the same thing.

He will always be a part of you. Not a day goes by that I don't miss mine, a WWII Marine who dealt with every issue with a great sense of humor. It was an honor to be his only daughter. He was a Southern gentleman, a great Daddy and husband to my Mom, and a Christian. I am only thankful to have had him in my life for as long as I did.

My prayers are for you and the rest of you morons tonight, for comfort and peace. xoxo

I find that it's helpful when confronted by most deaths to be grateful for the end of someone's suffering.

I was overjoyed when I found my father that way and that's why I'm taking one of my dogs to get taken out tomorrow.  He's sleeping now in my living room with a bellyful of ground chuck.  16 years old, deaf, almost blind, horribly arthritic, and a huge growing tumor on his ass.

For who's sake are we desiring to prolong the suffering of another?  Is our comfort worth more than their pain???  If we want the best for them who are we really crying for?

RIP Joffen I have no complaints

445 No way soothsayer.

That is not on you.

He chose to read here.

Do not look to politics for your satisfaction or personal vindication.

Far too many people here let the daily/weekly/monthly ebb and flow of the political process control their own happiness. If you let it, I guarantee that you will end up depressed. Why? Because politics in general is inherently unsatisfying and in most ways beyond your immediate control. Obsessing over something that you personally can't do much about and that is almost always unsatisfying is a near perfect recipe for depression.

And if you are clinically depressed for God's sake stay away from politics. There's always something somewhere horrible to focus on and the depressed have a preternatural filter that blocks everything except despair.

This, times 1000. I have been medicated for over 20 years, because when I am not, I crash hard. Hard enough to try. And I don't want to try anymore, dammit. So I take the meds.

479 As much as I love you Ace & Co... fuck you for the dog 10 commandments. I just had to put my dog down today. And I already miss him.

I'm so sorry.

I was just tearing up when I read the Canine Commandments.

We lost our little Dolly last April, and it still hurts every day. Her sister misses her still as well. People who say they don't know are idiots.

I was wondering why Daisy was laying almost upright on the sofa back, cuddling up to a jacket I threw down. I realized after an hour that I wore it when I was carrying her sister Dolly when she was so very sick in that Jacket, which I hung up and hadn't worn since. Both my wife and I cried when I realized why she was doing that.

Again, I really do feel your pain and wish I could say it'll get better. I can't. But I can say you were good and did everything you could for your wonderful dog.

And he was rich - yes, richer than a king - And admirably schooled in every grace: In fine, we thought that he was everything To make us wish that we were in his place. 487 Ashley - The *exact same thing* happened in Atlanta in 1982. Not 'similar', the same thing. People acted as though it wasn't coming. Huge mess in consequence. No institutional memory. Wiki:" A January 1982 snowstorm, which came to be called "Snow Jam '82" by the media and those who lived through it, also crippled the city just as bad as ice can, striking in the afternoon while everyone was at work, several hours earlier than expected. Tens of thousands of people were stranded in the city, abandoning cars on every road and freeway and booking hotels to capacity, unable to get home to the suburbs." Posted by: Mike Hammer at February 01, 2014 12:13 AM (aDwsi) 30 years in Atlanta means that a whole new group of people are there that weren't even living there when that happened. Thanks.  For you, and the rest of the military veterans out there, toss a salute in the direction of West Tennessee about 1630 central time on Monday.  The rifles should be firing and Taps playing about that time.  Dad was a retired Senior Chief, and will be getting the appropriate sendoff.  Another thing he would have found ironic is the ships going into the Black Sea during the Olympics, since he went there on USS Turner (DDR-834) in the '68 (I think it was 6 and they stared down the Soviet Black Sea Fleet (his General Quarters station was as the CO's bridge phone talker).

And this will describe the level of integrity that he had:  Dad was a Personnelman (PN), the primary duties of which are the maintenance of enlisted records and processing all sorts of paperwork, including awards.  Anyone who's been in the military knows how admin types are notorious for getting all kinds of medals, since they write up the paperwork for them.  Dad retired wearing only the National Defense Service Medal and five awards of the Good Conduct.  Anytime he got put in for an Achievement Medal or a Commendation Medal, he'd round file the paperwork since he knew it would be taking an award away from someone else.  He did the same thing for the Expeditionary Medal he was entitled to from the Bay of Pigs; he told he couldn't in good conscience wear it after the way "those poor guys" got left on the beach with no air support.

525 I don't know of any time Ohio schools were closed by state order, as that map suggests. The decision is made by individual district superintendents, who go for a drive at 0500 (or delegate the transportation manager to do it). Recently there has been the "level" snow emergency, a FEMA imposition, but even that is imposed by the county sheriff. Not the state.

I used to get a pretty good rise out of kids in gun safety classes by telling the story that even though pistols are like crack to teenage boys, if you put ten kids in a room with a gun on the table, the person to pick it up and wave it around will be the adult anti-gunner who's never touched one before and doesn't know how to clear it. I have seen it happen, and it gave the young something to think about: don't be like weird Uncle Kevin. Do we use the anagram PSH here? Well, it's often fatal.

526 so, in case you missed the part where I am complaining about, ny, ny is not in the south. you may also be mistaken in thinking that I would somehow forgive the northeast's unpreparedness for natural events. nope. sand ans salt spreaders are not especially expensive, nowhere near as expensive as plows. if you have had a prblem similar to the one you have now in the last 25 years it is your fault that you are experiencing it now. I am not sure you everyone in Atlanta has missed my comments about new york city and surrounding areas. I have also complained about the recent decision to simply close the main road in long island instead of making an effort to plow the road and keep it open. government should be getting better at what it does and services it provides. better equipment information tools everything. how is it getting worse? why is anyone in atlanta defending or excusing the performance of state and city in the face of two inches of snow? your temperatures never even dropped below the point at which deicers work. with even a minimal effort your city and state should have managed easily. as for tropical storms hiting ny nj, stuff was built where it should not have been. no sympathy from me.

535  @ 527 -- "why is anyone in atlanta defending or excusing the performance of state and city in the face of two inches of snow?"

Because it would be stupid of them to invest tax money on snow plows and salt spreaders in a state where, when it actually does snow maybe once every ten years, it typically melts away within 24 hours.

536 My sister lived in Atlanta for 9 years. She said they had at least one black ice event EVERY year. It was not a surprise, it was a regular event they should have been prepared for. Not to mention they were warned repeatedly. She's living in NC now, and said there was lots of warning & preparation.

I've lived in NC most of my life. It's not true. We closed Tuesday for snow. No snow Tuesday. Snowed Wednesday. Three inches, but stayed below freezing.

537 I'm sorry that I apparently labeled your obvious lack of knowledge as a Uhhhh.... obvious lack of knowledge of whereof you speak. Last time, come on down and live it. I'm a transplanted Yankee, since 86. You have no fcuking clue what you,'re talking about regarding budget priorities for every 10 year events vs. Day by day certainty. Last time, for the crowd, you may come down here and experience it for yourself. Or blow me. But mostly, blow me. Posted by: ManWithNoParty you are a cretin. the point I made and which you missed was not about atlanta in particular but poorly managed government in general. you elected to make it personal. all the same, if you knew as much as you claim to know you would know the difference between plows and sand and salt spreaders is immense. a small attachment at the rear of a dump truck full of a sand salt mixture is not expensive, few grand per truck, tops.

In the St. Louis area, city and county government is completely separate (for now).  Whenever we get winter weather, usually within hours, and often while it  is still coming down, county roads are being salted and plowed.  It generally doesn't take  long before  even side streets are passable.

City roads tend to develop into ice rinks, and stay that way for as long as the temps remain low enough to not allow melting.

What's the  difference between city and county?  It's not geography.   It's government.

550 When my dad committed suicide, we sat around trying to figure out what we could have done differently, and there wasn't anything besides sitting next to him 24 hours a day. I lost a young cousin suicide a few years back. 17 years old, had the world on a string. I know everyone says that, but he really did. He got broken up over some twist tail little bitch who didn't just dump him, she kept being involved in his life. I don't know her, but I suspect in some way his mooning validated her or some sick shit. His folks recognized what was going on and moved fast to counter it. They were a hunting, outdoors family, my uncle removed all the guns from the house. He took time off work to be there for cousin, got him talking to professionals. It seemed to be working, and one day uncle went for a short walk just to bleed off stress. Cousin called girl from the garage phone (or maybe vice versa, I don't know). On the wall was a family heirloom, "the gun great grandad carried in the Mexican War" or something like that. It was an antique, a decoration, hadn't been fired in a century. Nobody even thought it worked, it was supposed to have been spiked before it was mounted and had been passed down through the generations as a decoration for God's sake. In a fit of " I'll show you, you'll miss me when I'm gone", cousin proved that it did. Five seconds thought and he'd have put it down. Everyone really did everything they could have done ( except removing the heirloom, and remember, nobody knew it was in working order ). Sometimes it's not enough.

592  @ Berserker -- It's a hell of a thing. Two guys I worked with (back in the early 90's), and had known since high school, took their lives within a month. The second one -- just a hell of a nice guy -- had been dumped by his girlfriend about a week before and was feeling pretty down.

He loved the Little Rascals and we'd been talking about them during breaks at work for a couple of days, and it always seemed to lift his spirits. I told him I had four hours' worth of episodes on VHS, and he asked if he could borrow the tape for the weekend. I was happy to do so and brought it in to work with me that Friday.

It was the last time I ever saw him.

The other guy was a friend I'd gotten to know while drinking and smoking weed at parties and hangouts over the years. He died playing Russian Roulette with a .44 at another friend's -- supposedly. There's always been a little doubt over the actual circumstances, but that was the "official" line. He had been more involved in the whole drug scene than I ever was, and some people were less than happy with him at the time.

602 I started reading about Joffen this eve in tonight's ONT (after first seeing the dog commandments) while waiting for a haircut.  Went back to the Ukraine thread to catch up then had to stop because my phone was about to run out of juice.  That Green Day "Time of Your Life" song came on just then and G-d help me but that effin' song almost had me crying.

TL;DR Mumbling drivel to make myself feel better.  Dogs rule.

I've been here as a mostly lurker under different names for 10+ years.  I read through 50% of the ONT comments about 50% of the time.  It's funny how people come and go, some I remember some I don't but there's a continuity across the "generations".  I have no idea how that's relevant, I guess it's not lol but whatever, I liked Joffen's posts, always liked the Sunshine Patriot tag (EoJ came up with that?  Ha, makes sense for some reason).

I'll add to the pile of "you all did everything you could, incorporate his memory into yourself and keep going".  My wife's cousin just died after being in a few days long brain-dead coma from a heroin overdose; they pulled the plug.  Second cousin dead in the last few years from a drug OD to go along with a suicide a few more years back by another cousin who was one of the children molested in that Boston priest scandal (he had gone public).  She's got a big family but still...  You do what you can and remember that you have your own life and family to take care of (reminds me of the Moron who was dealing with a seriously off-kilter step daughter or niece(?)  I never found out how that ended).

I don't really believe that suicide is a sin.  It can be selfish, but sometimes it's utter hopelessness and not a copout or spite.  Being in that hole can be more than depressing, it can be downright terrifying.  I've been pretty down at times, and have thought of ending it all but couldn't figure out how best to do it without messing everyone else up.  Then I had a child and realized that no matter what happens I can't leave him.

Eh, I guess I'm writing this to add a virtual stone to his (temporary) marker, and to make myself feel better.  Didn't work, but RIP Joffen, I've got a massive headache but I'll wash the ibuprofin down with a toast to you.

Regarding the dog commandments: dogs are the best, and I try to remind myself of those things whenever my dog bothers or "inconveniences" me. I probably don't deserve her.

Little Billy gets injured on the school bus because of the snow? You just know his parents will file a million dollar lawsuit. It becomes a cost/benefit analysis, and it is much cheaper to just close the school and not worry about the possibility of a lawsuit.

Don't worry about it.  It was well-stated, and well worth  the read.

Anytime I think of making blanket statements about suicide, I think about those folks in the  World  Trade Center on 9/11.  Technically, they committed suicide when they jumped out of those windows to escape whatever hell was at their backs.

That's  the thing of it:  you never know what hell is at someone's  back, pushing them to jump, either literally or figuratively.  Yes, it's hard for the survivors to carry on, but  we are living, and  living is ALWAYS hard to do.

I just wanted to say RIP Joffen. I was on the ONT the first time he threatened to do this. A lot of you good people saved him then and probably have since.

You're good people, from what I saw  after his wife left was a pain he may not recover from. He did then after of couple of weeks of everyone here helping. It didn't stick.

So anyways, prayers for him and his family. There is nothing more to say.

631 Each one of us is a tiny, short-lived miracle of hope in a vast, ancient universe. Life is tough, and we fuck it up. But we get this chance to see and feel and think and taste and smell and laugh and have kids and live. For such a short time, each of us is a pinnacle of creation, however flawed we are. As hard as life is we still are loved and are never truly alone. None of you have any real idea how much you are prayed for and loved. Infinitely. The odds against anyone of us ever being born tells me that each one you should realize just how important you are. Goodnight, and may God bless each one of you tonight.

677 676 I'm reading about earthquakes a bit above. Va had an earthquake? Oh, right, it did. I was in Loma Prieta (the infamous World Series quake). That was an earthquake.

Posted by: SFGoth at February 01, 2014 04:28 AM (CyDmM)

I was taking a sick day for Loma Prieta -- and was in one of the type of buildings that failed so spectacularly in Northridge -- 2 story apartments over parking. I'm laying there on the bed going, "yuck" when the shaking starts....and it's obviously something, so I stand on the bed.....then the wall behind my bookcase drops about 3", cocks back about 6", and abruptly throws all the books off the shelf, so they're hanging in air -- still arranged in groups where the shelves were, but about 1" in front of the shelf edge.

At least I had it better than my next door neighbor. He had just gotten home, shucked off his shoes and slacks, and was pouring himself a drink to relax when the fridge jumped him. He knew it was an earthquake, and -- despite living on the second floor of a two story building -- his primary concern was something falling on him.....so he decided to head for the middle of the koi pond in front of our building. He dodged the still-dancing fridge, and started making his way downstairs, being battered against the wall and stair railing at every step, until he got to the bottom, where he crossed the sidewalk, climbed the ornamental hill in front of the pond, and discovered that the shaking had stopped.

And, of course, that he was extensively bruised; in a dress shirt, underwear and socks; clutching an open 1.75 liter bottle of whiskey; standing in the landscaping.

I should extend this -- they found an individual when there was more than one with the same name in their city, who had a generic cellphone that didn't resolve to a physical address, in the middle of the wee hours of the morning, based on very sketchy information and concern from a stranger 3000 miles away, without waking up half the town or otherwise causing alarm. And I understand, totally, why they shut down to me afterwards -- they had to notify next-of-kin first.

I was thinking of the poor cops thinking they were on some wild-goose chase after some internet bullshit and knowing that I'd been calling repeatedly with "please hurry" and trying not to stir up the people who pay their salaries.....then discovering the body. I'd even lodged a complaint that their website didn't have a phone number for 911-level calls coming from out-of-the-area. They did a good job and don't deserve to go through self-doubt flagellation.

686 I woke back up, and logged in to my computer -- at 4:20 am.

Anyone got a joint?

Bogarters.

And in case you ever wondered why it's called bogarting, the Urban Dictionary has an answer:

To keep something all for oneself, thus depriving anyone else of having any. A slang term derived from the last name of famous actor Humphrey Bogart because he often kept a cigarette in the corner of his mouth, seemingly never actually drawing on it or smoking it. Often used with weed or joints but can be applied to anything.

I should make sure that MP4 is aware of this.

She mentioned the death of her child a year back, and that she had gone 10 months unemployed due to the economy.

But she went to a doc, and takes an antidepressant to deal with the depressive symptoms. and it's under control, but her friends/relatives give her a bit of grief about her using drugs. but she is controlling her grief.

i dunno, it was just a sorta weird convo to have with your banker, that you just met for the first time. It was nevertheless a 'real' one. I see her again this am to complete our deal; I plan to stress that I didn't express sufficient initial sadness at what she must have gone through.

It's really funny [as my Gramps used to say, "funny -- peculiar; not funny -- ha, ha"], how often people have confided in me on the slightest of acquaintance -- and sometimes very shocking things. It's been happening since I was about 15, and sometimes -- to be honest -- I was not ready for the sort of revelation involved.

But I've always tried to listen and reason things through, and do my best to help people to a better understanding and a better place. I'm usually better at the "understanding" part, having read widely in my youth and been habitually curious.

One thing you cannot do, however, is to take all of the pain in the world into yourself. I can empathize and counsel, but have a very clear distinction in my mind between "my problem" and "your problem" -- not through any sense of vindictiveness or anything, but because it would have ripped me apart before I hit 20.

While you can tell her that you regret seeming removed from her obvious pain, the more distressing issue is her "friends" giving her grief about using drugs to numb the pain. What kind of "friends" are these, that demand she suffer?

The whole deal about immigration is national debt per capita.

If congress wants to spend the crap out of things, it's going to raise the national debt per capita unless they raise the "capita" faster.

I was part of the 82 Snow Jam. It transformed my 1h commute into 5.
This time I slept till 4pm and went to work at 9pm, took maybe 20m about 5m more than usual. Where I met a half dozen of the day shift that were spending the night and monitored at least 1 dozen drivers (ICs) and employees as they sat on the interstate. One guy took from 16:30-6:30 to get home and another got stuck on the top end from 9pm to almost 2pm the next day.  Just Wow

Regarding trying to save others (not counting bad brain-chem will-killers): We are God's voice to some, and sometimes our apostleship reaches the listener, but it's the listener's choice to listen. Or not. God gave us relative free will and will not violate it Himself, so it's unlikely we can. The very Son of God himself only had an 91.6%* success rate among his own closest associates. Most folks don't blame Jesus for Judas's choices or think the perfect One could have done more. *Yes, I actually pulled up the calculator to divide 11 by 12. I'm so ashamed.

There's no blame to be had here, he died of a chronic and deadly illness, one that medical science doesn't have a solid cure for yet, and I'm sure he's somewhere a lot better now.

If the darkness ever seems like it's too much?  If every loss seems to multiply and every success vanish as soon as you blink?  Talk to your friends, vent to the Horde (I did a few times, not sure anyone remembers), don't try to keep it to yourself.

There is that thing of "math anxiety" - apparently the brain cells that would do numbers get choked by - or their CPU is totally tied up by - anxiety about getting the answer. "Raising the capita" to reduce the debt per, works great as long as all the newer members of the capita don't want any services, perks, and other assorted free stuff from the guys that gave you the debt in the first place.  So obviously the GOP-e has come up with the perfect solution of even more unlimited immigration than we now have, namely, screw the base, pacify the CoC, and ensure cushy consulting gigs after the fall.

I took the smallest dose of Elavil possible to relieve my nerve pain. The only bad thing I have to say about it is that it made me excessively thirsty and dried out my eyes & throat & took two months to work all day.
