Overnight Open Thread (31 Aug 2013)
— CDR M

Hmmm, not surprising. The President does not care if Congress gives him approval to strike Syria, he's gonna do it anyway.

A senior State Department official tells Fox News the president’s decision to take military action in Syria still stands, and will indeed be carried out, regardless of whether Congress votes next week to approve the use of such force.

The official said that every major player on the National Security Council – including the commander-in-chief – was in accord last night on the need for military action, and that the president’s decision to seek a congressional debate and vote was a surprise to most if not all of them. However, the aide insisted the request for Congress to vote did not supplant the president’s earlier decision to use force in Syria, only delayed its implementation.

If Only

Administrative error sends Bradley Manning to death row, Nidal Hasan to gender reassignment surgery. Oh man, I needed a laugh.

After sentencing concluded last Wednesday in Fort Hood, Texas, it was reported Hasan would undergo gender reassignment surgery and change his name from Nidal to Nahid Hasan. Nahid is an Arabic name meaning “one with full, round breasts.”

Not long after it was revealed, the traitor formerly known as Chelsea had been transferred to death row where he awaits execution by lethal injection.

Leavenworth officials announced that both gender reassignment and execution have been approved by fiscal offices. Due to end of fiscal year funding constraints, changing these allocations will be too costly in the final quarter.

Messy Food Eating Etiquette

Man I didn't know there was a right way to eat buffalo hot wings. I just tear into them like a piranha. 10 messy foods you're eating the wrong way.

Yes, you can eat these gracefully, sauce and all, says Sandy Muskopf Hyde, president of the Etiquette School of Ohio and a native of Buffalo, NY, birthplace of the famous wings. To minimize mess, go for drumsticks: Hold the ends with the thumb and index finger (or first two fingers) of both hands, and eat the drumstick clean. The two-boned, flat chicken wing is a different story, she says. Pick the wing up by the ends with the thumb and index finger (or first two fingers) of both hands. Locate the end with the larger bone sticking out. Use your fingers to pull the cartilage off from this end and discard it. Locate the smaller bone, twist it loose with your fingers and pull it from the wing. Do the same with the larger bone. "You may now eat your boneless chicken wing," Muskopf Hyde says.

Non-Alcoholic Beer Challenge

Dumbass wonders if drinking 28 non-alcoholic beers in an hour will make him drunk? Actually, he figured 30 would make him legally drunk at .08. He could only handle 28 in an hour. No small feat and he paid for it as he promptly ralphed it up. In the end, he ended up blowing a .02.

7 Fables of Cory Booker Crypto-Progressive and soon-to-be New Jersey Senator Cory Booker has been caught in a bit of a fib. Specifically his tales of his friend “T-Bone” — “the drug pusher who the mayor has said threatened his life at one turn and sobbed on his shoulder the next” — turnsout to be a complete fiction. Much mirth has been had over his imaginary friend, though the media will just cover for him like they do for all politiciants of the Progressive persuasion. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=3114

37 The Russian T-50. Well, okay. I've been reading all my life about how Soviet, and now Russian technology was going to leapfrog the US. And it never happens. Modern fighter jets are inherently unstable (and built that way) to allow them to have steep angles of attach. The "stealth" aircraft are even more so. It takes some sophisticated hardware and software to make them flyable by normal mortals. And that's where I have big questions about the T-50.

since when are we One nation? He has done nothing but divide us into seperate angry groups intentionally and called half of us his enemies.

and this comment found on the left site has to take the cake for KoolAide drinking;
Defining what your position is, detailing why it is so strategically & legally, then opening up the formal debate to provide one more check & balance via Congress, then fulfilling your leadership role as President to make the ultimate decision about any military response.   Brilliant.

69 The AIM-54C is no longer in service. AIM-120 can do a lot of the same things except without the range or ability to kill cruise missiles skimming the water.

The ASF variant Tomcats would have had an AESA radar to replace the -71 with far more modes.  Talking over 17,000lbs of fuel carried internally.  More powerful F-110-GE-229 engines for more thrust.  Able to do AoAs over 70 degrees.

The mock-up of the Tomcat 21/ASF cockpit was Star Wars.  Pure glass cockpit front and back.  The RIO had a primary MFD along with another 18x6 that could be configured into three smaller 6x6 screens.

I think a towel wrapped around the body and held with belts or safety pins might be worth a shot.

I think the X factor here is that he actually hears and feels criticism if it comes from the left. So if he gets a "Yes," he can share the blame, and if he gets a "No," he can try for some macho warmonger cred, or, more likely, go for the blameless climbdown. He might be envying Cameron, and he didn't really mean the red line thingy anyway.

On the other hand, a brief study of history should take you there as well.

169 The reason Boeing is peddling the pannier is pretty simple.  Like every other evolution of the Northrop Cobra LWF YF-17 to something better, it has required the engineers to make the plane bigger and heavier.  YF-17 -> F/A-18A/C -> F-18E shows this runaway growth.  They could not do more weapons carriage without hacking the fuselage again.  So presto, we give you panniers on the centerline and two inner pylons which at the first sign of trouble, ie being bounced, jettison and try to survive.

214 "Is the Super Hornet able to shoot off the Phoenix missile, AIM-54?" No, it can't but that's necessarily a bad thing. The Phoenix was designed to hit big lumbering Russian bombers (Tu-16/Tu-95) who would be hunting U.S. carrier groups in the event of war. Great big metal objects in the sky returning a huge radar signature, flying around 500 miles an hour, and maintaining a very limited flight path. Secondarily, it could be used to target the anti-ship missiles that those Badgers and Bears could have launched. I'm not talking about the stuff today, no. I'm talking 50 year Russian cruise missiles (AS-1) which were subsonic, the size of aircraft themselves, and did little maneuvering once launched. It's success against such types of targets was okay. It's success in testing against other types of targets was not as much. The AIM-54 wasn't some type of "reach and touch 'em" weapon to be used against a tactical aircraft or targets traveling at supersonic speed. There are many who decry the Super Hornet. I am not one of those. The SH has proven to be one Hell of an airplane. On time, under-budget, and meeting the USN's specs while doing so. There's a rarity and quality in that alone. Think about the fact that the SH has replaced, and reasonably performed successfully in doing so, the following aircraft. F-14. A-7. A-6. EA-6B. Legacy Hornet. KS-3A Viking. That would be fleet air defence, medium attack, heavy attack, electronic warfare, fighter-bomber, and, buddy tanking all in one airframe. That is no small feat. The F-35. It's run long and over budget, but, it's the next big thing. And it'll be a fine airplane once in service.

Chinless is winning and Ebola needs to turn things around or Iran and Russia will step up to the next level and the USA will be in retreat. Ebola only cares about that because it makes him look weak and stupid. Of course he is too weak and stupid to see how his weakness and stupidity got us here in the first place. 254 As much as I like (most of) the commenters here, the really distinguishing thing about HQ is how often ace gets really involved in the comments. I felt very badly for him yesterday when he was so wound up by a couple of turds in the thread. So if him venting the way he did - at a specific person over a specific asshole comment - helps him put things in perspective and keep on engaging us, then I'm glad he did it. YMMV

258 I suspect the goal is to set the whole ME on fire and massively reduce the numbers of the socialist fanatics' natural enemy, the religious fanatics. Like so many inclined to kill each other, the two are very much alike in their desire to impose an intensely regimented society upon all humankind.

I don't think our fighters suck, but many of us do have great memories of the older models.

274 " Oh pulease. The Super Hornet is not a success. It can't bank as fast or turn as quick as a Legacy Hornet. Acceleration compared to an F/A-18C is sluggish. Its range is barely 10% greater than a Legacy Hornet. And it only has two more weapons stations than an F/A-18C." Yeah, actually, no. The SH's high alpha handling characteristics are superior to the Legacy. Acceleration, you win. Range is better than that if not much. The SH's radar signature is less than the original and the Tomcat by a notable amount. WVR engagements in this day and age are very rare. It's about who can see who at range, avert detection, and fire first. Missiles do as much if not more maneuvering today than the aircraft themselves do. The combination is the SH's AESA and AIM-120 is just about exactly what the F-22 is sporting these days. We think the F-22 is a bad ass world saver, but, we can the SH for having the same? Both are designed to see the enemy far off, keep the enemy from seeing us too soon, and, firing at them first. Be it ATG or ATA. Both are doing the same job with the SH doing even more for the Navy. For the money spent, the results, and the capabilities..........the Super Hornet is a resounding success. Saying otherwise is, simply, abject ignorance.....

When you get to the bottom of the page click on the last comment number you read.  That will refresh the page and bring you to that comment.  On subsequent clicks of the last comment you read you will have to jump back up to hit the refresh button but it will drop you down to that last comment your read as long as you made sure to click it.

That cuts down on some of your scrolling.

Machinists Mate - here

Posted by: PMRich at August 31, 2013 07:11 PM (KDUNf)

373 To continue along this theme......the F-14 was an aircraft that never needed to be. The Russkies targeted U.S./British/French carriers as strategic targets in the Cold War. They sure did as they feared that nuclear strikes could have been launched off of them into peripheral Russia. They were prescient as that was just exactly what, at least, the USN was planning. The Russians dedicated hundreds of aircraft, tactical and strategic, to the idea of nailing foreign warships in the Baltic, the Black Sea, the Med, the Pacific, and the Indian Ocean for just such tasks. The Russians in the 1960s and 1970s were actually pretty wary of the F-4. Not because of it's performance over Vietnam in close air combat with the NVAF , but, because of it's performance as an interceptor with the USN and USAF. The F-4 was a big honking thorn in the side of Soviet planners as it could hit targets at range and do so consistently. The Soviet Union wasn't going to be sending squadrons of Mig-17s or Mig-19s against the U.S. The F-4 owned any formation of Mya-4s or Tu-16s they could send. The Russians weren't plyers of radar avoidance, or low level flying at the time. This applied equally when it came to U.S. carrier defence where the F-4 shined. The F-14 was not any serious improvement in performance over the F-4. Other than radar and the added AIM-53, they were very similar aircraft. Top speed. Range. Etc. The F-14 had a new radar and a missile. McD in the early 70's offered a modified F-4 with radar and AIM-54 (though only two rather than four.)

We have no positive interest in Syria. To be truthful, any act against the Assad regime is inherently supportive of Al Qaeda, which by their own voice and the 2001 AUMF is an enemy of the USA. Such action is treasonous.

Posted by: RWC at August 31, 2013 08:02 PM (6TV0b)

488 Okay, aviation hat on.

F-14: magnificent and fast Iron Works design. An enormous maintenance hog. Far and away the costliest frame in the fleet with regard to total cost of ownership. Carried the Phoenix missile, which is one of those ambitious concepts that never worked particularly well in practice, if at all, and thank God a carrier was never in a position where there was an AIM-54 as the deciding factor in its combat survival.

A dangerous dog at times when boarding, especially with the completely inferior original engine fit, which was notorious for putting a number of newly trained or rusty aviators in very bad places near the ship. At times exceeding those mediocre aviators' responses, to lethal effect. (cough) Kara Hultgreen (cough)

Could have been a considerably improved aircraft in the various advanced re-engined configurations. A shame that never happened. I held a wake when Cheney killed the idea. However, it would never have had the delicate signature management necessary to keep it alive against today's advanced threats. Impossible to retrofit to that level either.

F/A-18: so much of an improvement in maintenance cost over the F-14 that it's not even funny. Even more reliable than the incredibly reliable A-4, which is a much less technically complex plane. The safest fighter jet ever to have been in the fleet from a boarding standpoint. Every aviator I've talked to praises its docility and controllability on approach. No surprises. And, like the F-14, it has TWO GODDAMN ENGINES, which, F-35 boosters, take notes, this will be on the final exam. The final exam that's scheduled for night over cold hostile water in bad weather.

However, short legs. Did I mention short legs? Short legs. Laughably short compared to some of the jets it was described as replacing. There is a reason Bugs do so much buddy tanking. Tiny weapons loadout to range. I used to work with an A-6 guy. He would write up a typical mission profile for his community, involving moving X number of tons of ordnance to a target at Y nautical miles out, and shove that down the bar to the Hornet guys to watch the blood drain from their faces. Heavy deep strike ceased to exist when the A-6 went away. Hornets can not fill that hole.

The Bug in its various forms is also slow and draggy. There is the canted wing stores problem. The -18 is an improvement when it comes to signature management over the F-14, but jeez, what would not have been? Even this latest version with "better stealth" is still going to get picked up and picked off awfully fast by modern threat radars. And none of the Bug variants, to include the latest, have kinematics sufficient to get in and out of triple-digit SAM envelopes quickly enough.

F-35 bitching to follow.

508 The Dems have dirt on all GOP pols, of every category. Opposition research and all that. I think it goes back to the 90's with the Clintons and the "FBI files" that they got hold of. When that was put out in the open, all of a sudden GOP senators and congressmen began retiring or playing ball with Clinton. It is why they never did a fucking thing about Benghazi. Hillary! has the dirt on Miss Lindsey getting it up the tailpipe and has the goods on McCain. It's why both of them were so quick to work with her in the Senate.

I hate to see the Navy putting all of its eggs into the Hornet/Super Hornet basket though, and they really really REALLY need a longer range carrier ASW platform. Policy wonks have been wrong before (fighters don't need guns in the age of long range missiles...can you say gunpod?) and unfortunately when those fucks are wrong Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines pay for it with their blood.

523 Can someone explain or link to this Marple/Ace situation? My take? Best link is right on the home page at the top of the side-bar in re Miss Marple particularly but I think this really boiled over for Ace in the comments on the Robin Thicke post. In response to what was IMHO a really funny long-form comedy gag (you didn't even need to watch the video to appreciate it. I didn't care to but neither bewbs nor brunettes are particularly my thang. ) that Ace obviously spent some time crafting some of the commenters wanted to rehash for the zillionth time how much they think current pop culture is unconservative trash and LIVs and moral decay and "Why aren't we discussing more serious issues", yadda, yadda, yadda. This isn't nearly the first time something like this has happened but I think that this was the straw that broke the camel's back for him and he got openly upset or butthurt, as the case may be. I think he was justifiably proud of the piece that he wrote and to see the response so quickly devolve into the same tired repetitions of "Bah! Pop Culture Sucks!" might have felt more than a bit like casting pearls before swine. I come here as much for the comments section some days as I do for Ace but I can see where (I think) he is coming from. It can seem at times as if some commenters will only be happy if Ace posts items so that we can have alternating variations on Allen G's "The President is a SCOAMF... or Burn it Down..." on an endless loop. I mean, I get the need to vent. Lord knows I've done it enough times myself here! I think that Ace is a hugely talented writer and that he hosts one of the best house-parties on the intarwebz with the best guests but... If the host wants to get his dance on in the living room but you'd rather play in the pool right now (which is still open BTW, go ahead, no one is stopping you!), it seems a tad ungracious to insist the stereo be shut off and everyone file out to the pool deck, especially if you haven't even bothered trying to organize even a lame-ass game of Marco Polo. And no, this isn't Charles Johnson (whoever the fuck that was, either he had some blog a decade ago that I never visited or he's some genocidal, baby impaling dictator in Africa somewhere, judging by the way his name is invoked). It's more like, you invite some people over to enjoy a dinner that you put a lot of time and effort into and some of your guests spend all their time talking to each other criticizing your taste in furniture, your neighborhood, how they generally don't like pork-chops or asparagus or whatever, without ever tasting a bite of the meal you prepared for them! I'd get a bit tetchy after a while. My 2 cents. I know, TLDR. Just can't think in listicles.

Ergo, it makes no difference any more. I'm cranking out the cold drinks and setting the chairs up on the balcony, if it's gonna burn I might as well enjoy the pretty pretty lights.

My dad told me the same thing about previous planes, I can totally understand. It is nice to know that they made improvements in maintainability on newer planes. Too bad they went the opposite way on the ships themselves for so long.

Got to go aboard the Iowa once, I was amazed at how the ship was layed out so that it was easy to access main engineering equipment. Complete with hatches above primary equip. for removal and trolleys for transport to maint. shops on the ship.

On the 'modern' ship I was on, you had to completely disassemble a pump in the engineroom, haul the parts out, then put it all back together on the main deck - so you could take it to the tender for repair. The other option was to wait for a shipyard period and cut a big effin' hole in the side of the ship.

Cast aside these fairweather patriots, for weak though the flesh may be, NOBLE and TRUE is the spirit within!

581 On the 'modern' ship I was on, you had to completely disassemble a pump in the engineroom, haul the parts out, then put it all back together on the main deck - so you could take it to the tender for repair. The other option was to wait for a shipyard period and cut a big effin' hole in the side of the ship.

Posted by: PMRich at September 01, 2013 02:11 AM (KDUNf)

On the nuke carriers they have these huge holes with bolted on covers on the main (hangar bay) deck and below, I understand they are for refueling the reactors, but everything else either gets disassembled, repaired in place, or if you are lucky and able to get it to one, goes up the ordnance elevators.

582 the House bill on Syria should say that Obama can do whatever he wants there for 48 hours and repeal Obamacare entirely. Or fuck off. His choice. Oh, Gawd no! Don't give the Stupid Party any ideas. Obama doesn't give a rat's ass about Syria, he never did. He does however care very much about Obamacare. That's his LEGACY. No brainer on his & Valerie Jarret's part as to which to choose. Aside from the politics of the whole situation, I think it is a terrible idea to play around lobbing missles into Syria "for 48 hrs" just for the hell of it, even if it is authorized by Congress.

I have an ancient (by technology standards) digital video camera that records on cassette tapes that you can't get players for (and never could AFAIK) and hooks up to the computer with a firewire cable that I could never get working. I could never tell if it was the computer port, the cable or the camera itself that wouldn't transfer data because I only had the one computer (something tells me that was it because the card readers stopped working also). I can hook it up with standard RCA connections to transfer data off it if I want to, but I don't have anything on it.

My new video camera records to a data card but the formatting is apparently unique to video cameras so won't play on anything any-damn way.

On the CGN I was on we had a compartment directly above the reactor with a large hatch just for this purpose, but don't remember a hatch in the overhead leading to the outside - get the torch. This isn't so bad really, a reactor only gets refueled every 15 yrs or so if the ship is at sea alot.

Hard to let that one go on what has been such a scamperfull Saturday so do with this description what you will... It's got six sides but the top part looks like a regular rectangular USB port except for slightly narrower with a little tapered drop down for the extra sides.

Posted by: Deety at August 31, 2013 09:53 PM (UaCt0)

596 The newer camera is probably recording to AVC, a common for mat for cams. If they didn't include any software that understands it and can transcode to other codecs, there is plenty widely available. Any good video editing app should handle it. Also, most decent Blu-ray deck or the boxes that do internet streaming and playback of files off a network or USB drive will be able to work with it.

On a PC, VLC will play pretty much everything worth mentioning. I use a free-ware app called Media Coder for transcoding to other formats. It knows about the hardware features of more recent Intel chips to greatly speed up the process if you don't require the absolute highest quality, as the experts still claim a quality edge for multi-pass software based conversion.

606 "Got to go aboard the Iowa once, I was amazed at how the ship was layed out so that it was easy to access main engineering equipment. Complete with hatches above primary equip. for removal and trolleys for transport to maint. shops on the ship."

In the era of the _Iowa_ class, the designers assumed that the ship would get in a fight, and then would probably have to endure being in several more fights after that before finally reaching a safe location for external repair/refit. Hence, built to take damage, and built to repair what they could while operating on their own.

Compare and contrast to modern USN warships, which can't even reload their main missile batteries while at sea any longer. Something important breaks? It has to be fixed by a manufacturers' tech team. Typically while in port.

611 One of the highlights of our visit to Saint Petersburg was the opportunity to see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reply_of_the_Zaporozhian_Cossacks in person. The story -- well covered by wikipedia -- is that the Z dudes were kickin' serious tuchis in 1676 and the Sultan sent them a letter couched in the usual flowery language to cease and desist. Rather than assent or reject the request with the usual flowery language, the Cossacks parodied the style of the request in obscene and scatological ways in their reply.

The backstory, however, adds depth to things. The Russians have long recruited badasses from the 'stans (Kazakhstan is just a variant spelling of "Cossack-stan") for "force projection" in the mideast and Europe. The term Czar (or tsar, whatev) is, itself, a variant spelling of "Caesar" from one of their more successful campaigns (Ivan III, grandfather of Ivan "the Terrible", managed to marry a niece of the Byzantine emperor in 1472, and -- since Constantinople had fallen to the Turks in 1453, the Russian Court decided to be the "Third Rome" and named Ivan IV "the Terrible" as the first Czar in 1547).

So here we have a bunch of folks who are talking about being the heirs of the Roman and Byzantine empires, using cossacks from the 'stans to whomp Ottoman Turks.....and their muscle is so dismissive of the Turks that they send such a contemptuous message.....

But, wait, it gets better! Catherine the Great decides that she's a little tired of the uppity Z guys and liquidated them in 1775. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zaporozhian_Host

So you get this total little microcosm of Russian history out of this one painting....

That stuff can be configured, although I've never had much trouble with it myself. And I suppose you have to make some allowances for it being French. Which is also why it can play DVDs and Blu-rays without a license, as French law regarding playback licenses is very different from most of the West. Technically, using it outside of France is illegal but nobody has seen fit to pursue the matter.

I found it worthwhile to build an HTPC because I kept running into stuff that none of my equipment would play. The game consoles don't like to admit MKV exists, and the Blu-ray decks and dedicated boxes that do speak MKV tend to not handle anything outside of their narrow range well. A bunch of stuff I have uses a spec for subtitles that falls into this category, even though VLC has no problem with the same files.

I've gotten the impression that Media Coder could convert the subtitles to a more modern standard but I don't know enough to give it the right parameters. It gets pretty esoteric.

639 "I think we're saying the same thing."

We are.

"At least with the ship I was on, we could theoretically load new missiles at sea.. on a calm day.. with a lot of hand wringing. Really it wasn't that bad with the rail mount systems, get it on the rail and lower away. How in the world do you reload an in-deck vertical launcher?"

The original ships with VLS had the provision to do that. A traveling crane on the front of the deckhouse. It had enough reach to cover all the vertical cells. The capability has since been deleted. In-port reloads only. You have to figure the voyage back to port with empty missile magazines, with a shooting war still going on, would be a bit nerve-wracking.

"Why, oh why do you make something for war that isn't easily repairable, easy to reload?"

I asked an old machinist's mate that question and he said, "It's a sign that it's been a long time since the last really big war where the Navy had to really fight. People forget basic stuff in peacetime."

647 Oh cthulu! That is awesome! I'd never heard of the Zaporozhian Cossacks before. Liking their first draft of the reply though: Zaporozhian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan! O sultan, Turkish devil and damned devil's kith and kin, secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight are you, that can't slay a hedgehog with your naked arse? The devil excretes, and your army eats. You will not, you son of a bitch, make subjects of Christian sons; we've no fear of your army, by land and by sea we will battle with thee, fuck your mother. You Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of Jerusalem, goat-fucker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser Egypt, Armenian pig, Podolian thief, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets, and fool of all the world and underworld, an idiot before God, grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our dick. Pig's snout, mare's arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw your own mother! So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. You won't even be herding Christian pigs. Now we'll conclude, for we don't know the date and don't own a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year with the Lord, the day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse! Koshovyi Otaman Ivan Sirko, with the whole Zaporozhian Host.

653 Posted by: epobirs at September 01, 2013 03:34 AM (kcfmt) Yes. French. Also, MKV is an AVI in a beret with a tiny moustache. The file, not the beret. Early on in that format war I said that MKV should be renamed IANAAH for "I Am Not An AVI, Honest." Also for some reason most of the MKV files I get are encoded terribly inefficiently, which does not make it the format's fault, but I do have to recode them if I want to keep them. Basically it's an open standard which is encumbered by "goals" for future development, I can understand why people wouldn't want to support it. Basically you can't lock anything down for supporting in hardware. Progress has been minimal so some hardware does support it, until it changes again.

My cheapo Blu-ray deck, an LG BP-220, handles about 85% of the MKVs I feed it fine but the remainder is enough to make me dissatisfied. The primary failure is not definition of the wrapper format. It's unsupported codecs that should not be unsupported. For instance, a lot of boxes don't know about Ogg for audio, even though it is freely available for anyone to implement on their firmware.

Problem is, a lot of fansub groups favor it for what I'd guess is more political/religious reasons than anything else. But easy as it would be to support, Ogg is missing from a lot of places.

I suppose if I got all of my stuff from official source it wouldn't be an issue but I haven't the disposable income for such indulgences and wouldn't want to give any money to Hollywood if I had it.

Have a cookie! Basically Ogg missed the "first wave" of hardware implementations that saw AVI and mpeg support hit DVD devices properly, and when the "second wave" hit it was seeing some "upgrades" that made it look unstable, and had no metadata support (officially). It just occurred to me I haven't seen a "third wave" of support, there may have been one when I wasn't looking. Some mp3 hardware players and firmware replacements for them support Ogg. And phones and stuff, which is kind of the way people are trying hard to go - tablets and smartphones. The goal is to get you on a service where you pay for access but don't *own* anything or have it locally. Part of the decadal cycle of centralization that fails every decade.

I got a little glimpse in the mid 70's, when the LA County Museum of Art had an exhibition of Scythian artifacts that was impressive as hell -- even when I revisited them at their "home" in the Hermitage a couple of years ago.

If you think about it, we know a whole lot about the history of Western Europe, the MidEast, East Asia, and the subcontinent. We know semi-fictionalized things about the history of North and South America, North Africa, and Australia. And we know diddly-bupkis about the history of Central Asia, Central Africa, and Southeast Asia.

But the Russians do. The Hermitage has quite a bit from Central Asia -- mostly in the untenanted corners. But it was rich and rare for me because the spots it illuminated were so totally blank before.

It may be my age but I'm very untrusting of infrastructure stability. Given the financial ability, I'd have a lot of safeguards in place against major inconvenience from temporary loss of utilities and services. ot a full-on prepper but I like the idea of a little insurance making a disaster into something livable. Like having enough generation capacity to not lose the contents of the fridge and to run the microwave. Or a pair of water tanks, one for drinking and cooking and the other gray for keeping the toilet flushing. And things like solar panels to keep your small electronics charged, the level where it's practical and unobtrusive.

Consequently, I like to have my media local. Given a high enough level of disposable income I'd probably have Netflix and/or Hulu subscriptions, mainly for my mother and sister. Given enough freedom from the anxiety of unemployment I'd probably spend more time gaming than watching videos. Given a bit more financial stability I'd keep downloading torrent but perhaps get more cable channels or a Netflix subscription to feel justified, regardless of how Hollywood views it.

So, you know, probably not a great plot. Also while he was traveling for the US Army I'm fairly sure he didn't pose for anything in Russia during the war. Man, what a time to be doing that work, in the midst of WWII (though started during the cheesy treaty between Nazis and Soviets).

Wouldn't the world burn just as well without us sticking our dicks into the chicken, just because we can, everywhere we go? Burn it! But, leave us out of it... please! Hand those people some gas and  some matches, and then point at the other guy for a change!

705 I was on vacation all week. I missed all of the fun, though I did catch some of Ace's rants. No wonder Zero likes to be away so much,it is so relaxing. But I don't get to nuke Syria if I'm feeling down.

706 I once saw a casket somewhere on the internet that was painted like a package with "Return to Sender" stamped on it. That's the one I want.

707 Maryland Air National Guard drop dud bomb on Darlene Hurley's bar parking lot. "Military leaders say the pilots involved in the training exercise were extremely experienced. And once they realized there may have been a malfunction, they avoided any densely populated areas." That's a non-apology. And what qualifies as avoiding densely populated areas? Hitting the parking lot instead of the bar. It takes an extremely experienced pilot to land an unarmed bomb between two cars in a lot. Impressive, the pilot maintained control during what "may have been a malfunction" of the brain or the designated target or the machinery.

708 On Krauthammer's coin Obama is still proving his amateurism in his SECOND term in office. No wonder his supporters say he needs and deserves a third term. Maybe by then he'll have figured out something or something. That was rich of him yesterday, declaring that the "British Parliament has FAILED" to do his bidding. "Tell us what we need to give you to help you make better decisions." -- Wilmington, DE Council Woman At Largesse to her constituents, the brazen and bold thugs with no respect for life whatsoever. Where stupid hits ground zero.

709 Where's the morning thread!? I need some levity and banter before I start on another day of homework. :\

710 Oh, well fine! I was just informed by my Dad, that because of my failure to give up the entirety of my last paycheck (had to pay the DMV $120 & a $150 traffic Citation, which I couldn't and had to spend $20 on parking to defer as I only had $75 in my checking account) $20 gas his car , $40 gas mine , $15 Groceries he has decided that if I can't come up with all of next month's rent $660 in my next paycheck (not gonna happen)then we have to move all of our crap to storage and live in a homeless shelter. WTF! I know, that he has "borrowed" close to $3000 from friends and family in the past 2 months. I know that he gets close to $700 Social Security. WTF is he doing[/i[/b]] with all of this money? So...quickly? I know that I have to pay $400 every month on a crappy $1,600 car loan that he took out. I just don't know how do do it but I bet he's WRONG. I'll bet you can't just put your shit in storage and show up to a homeless shelter.. If he's right and if he's smart, we will wait until October so as not to bake like potatos whilst living in our respective cars.

711 Barky said he was afraid that Hillary might give him a broomstick up the tail pipe if  he didn't do as she ordered.

I told Barky he can flip-flop and swing like John F. Kerry during Winter Soldier - nobody is slicker that Barky's dong with KY lub! I then bent Barky over and shoved  my sausage up his button hole. I told him should get his mojo back by diverting the blame to hundreds of congress critters. Let the MFM cover for him!

Barky started doing the stroke and I gave him a hard twerping from behind. I said the NYT could eaisly cover his flipping failures. I gave him a fill-up and put his butt plug back in place. He bleed a little but he has regained his homo, er, mojo. We are a better prepared to blame Hillary for it. If  Hillary goes under the bus will Barky will be in the drivers seat.

President Gutsy Call has announced "I've made the decision to bomb the shit (er really the twinkies) out of Syria."    Unless of course those big ol meanies in Congress won't let Gutsy Call do it---in which case, he'll say "I'm all wee wee'd up and bummed about that, but I really can't do it now."

What a brilliant leader.

Eat the drumstick portion of the wing? Why take advice from the severely retarded?

Saw a show where at the end they had a neat freak eat barbeque chicken. He did it without getting a drop of barbeque sauce on his face, clothes or fingers. He was then mocked mercilessly because  he didn't know how to enjoy eating. Same thing applies. Some foods are messy. Doesn't mean you have to eat them like you are a mincing faggot. (Not that there is anything wrong with that lolololol.)

715 560 wtf do I have to be envious about sport? First, foremost and last, this is a vanity blog. I actually make a living from the internet, and I've done so for a long time, and I do so with a minimum of effort and zero commuting. Any idea we have a 'relationship' is strictly on your end, and again, shows how far off the deep end you are. Anyone on the net I haven't met personally, I don't consider to have _any_ kind of relationship with because on the internet no one knows you're a dog. The envy is terribly obvious on your part, envy of anyone who gets a paying gig on the net who isn't you, who seems very full of himself, who goes on and on when he has a tiny point to push, and who thinks he's funny and again, beats half a joke into 2 pages. The fact you'd think _anyone_ envies you is pretty revealing in itself. (dirty little secret, you can't really ban anyone on any site, you've tried a dozen times and had to resort to deleting my posts because you couldn't actually ban me, or anyone else with half a brain). And, you write too long. Self-edit! (from someone who actually gets paid to write). I have a wife, I have 3 kids (one a lovely 2 month old girl) and I have a life. My best advice to you: get off this fucking blog and get one. The internet makes you crazy and the deeper you are into it, the crazier you get. And you are BEYOND in deep, acer. I bet you dream the internet. That's why you sweat every little bullshit comment on your blog. You sound more like Charles Johnson daily. This is the kind of shit that drove him batshit, living with his head up the ass of his own blog. Obsession is unhealthy.

716 He read it before he deleted it. My work is done. I'm trying to help the poor slob. If he wants to make a living, if he wants to be a writer, if he wants to "make a difference", there are better and healthier ways to go about it than to live in this fantasyland.

717 NeoSocs rarely care about the intricacies of the rule law, especially when they've painted themselves into a red line corner.
