Overnight Open Thread (30 May 2014)
— CDR M

Shinseki's resignation is not near enough. No way. Especially since it was just elaborate theater. While vets wait, VA employees do union work.

In total, the VA spent at least $13.77 million on 251 salaried employees performing full-time union work. Others, who were not included on the list provided by the VA, work part-time for unions at the taxpayer expense. In fiscal year 2011, the latest on record, the VA used 998,483 hours of this “official time,” costing taxpayers more than $42 million.

The newly released records show that in Baltimore, which has the nation’s longest wait times for veterans’ claims, taxpayers covered $372,674 in salary costs in 2012 for a clinical dietetic technician, a patient-services assistant, a health technician, a medical-support assistant, and two nurses to spend all their time at work on union issues and none of it working with veterans.

In Columbia, S.C., the VA pays one health technician a $40,706 salary to work for the American Federation of Government Employees.

23 Stealth conservatarian comment ninja "aperson" strikes again! On an article at a local news site about an "urban farm tour" in which progressives visit a bunch of hipster houses with big yards all over Oakland and Berkeley where they create mini-farms in the city -- because growing your own food means you have a lower carbon footprint and thus you stop Global Warming!! -- "aperson" had this to say (starting with a quote from the article): http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_25853767/urban-farm-tour-features-four-berkeley-home-scale " aperson 6 minutes ago "K. Ruby Blume, believes urban farming makes a lot of sense, not only to raise healthy food for one's family and beyond, but also to learn to conserve natural resources and reduce the carbon footprint." I'm just sitting here laughing and laughing. How does K. Ruby Blume and everyone else involved in this event expect the visitors to get to each farm, scattered as they are all over the East Bay? That's right, the only way to do this "tour" is via automobile. The amount of "carbon footprint" created just by the farm tour on this one day is greater than whatever amount she thinks she's saving for the other 364 days of the year combined. Hey, I grow vegetables in my garden too, but please, people, stop it with the "carbon footprint" and "climate change" mishigass already. Hypocrisy is embarrassing to watch. Either live up to your words and cease using the products of civilization, or just shut up about how evil that civilization is."

41 I had a rather perplexing feed failure with my new 1911 a couple days ago. I fired off what I thought was a full magazine, and the slide locked back as it should. When I lowered it to reload, though, I found a complete, intact cartridge rattling around in the breech. I was shooting with a friend who apparently owns a couple of 1911s and shoots regularly, and he didn't know why it would do such a thing. It puzzles me greatly how the cartridge could have got out of the magazine with the slide locked. The cartridge had no firing pin mark and when off fine when I loaded it back into the magazine and chambered it, so not a misfire.

62 Re the VA - here's a great opportunity for the repubs to play their own version of economic populism. Congress should introduce a bill requiring the VA to fire and prosecute every employee, at every level, who falsified data to collect a bonus. Stealing from your employer and the taxpayers is not acceptable, no way, no how. Pass the bill, and let the dems try to defend civil service rules that protect crooks.

68 Sweden's Cultural Genocide It has been pointed out before that Sweden is becoming increasingly repressive of... the Swedes (especially women) and Swedish culture. It is illegal to criticize immigration, even if what is factually true, even politicians. That is no longer a (classical) liberal democracy where people can openly debate or decide, but a "democracy" where only "correct" opinions are allowed. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=5887

80 How old is the mag? Perhaps the spring is getting worn? Well, the gun is probably nine or ten years old, but was fired less than fifty time according to the previous owner, so the magazine should be practically unused. The springs are actually quite stiff and difficult to compress. The gun probably had about 90-odd rounds through it when the failure happened, so that may have had something to do with it. The cartridge was a hollowpoint - I doing a test magazine to make sure they fed properly...it eats FMJ and my friend's cone-nosed, soft lead reloads just fine, and most of the hollowpoints worked fine. That one failure is a little worrying, though.

181

That particular 1911 issue, though rare, is often caused by the shooter's thumb putting upward pressure under the slide lock lever.  It's not the same as a high, thumbs-forward grip, but rather, a more conventional grip, with the right hand's thumb high up on, but not forward of, the pistol's left side grip panel.

Under recovery from recoil, that thumb can slide up the grip,  e'r so slightly, but enough to push the slide lock up and into serving it's purpose, before it's time.

In that the slide would have had the normal 1/8" of forward movement before finding it's further movement retarded by the slide lock, it could have enough momentum to kick that last cartridge out of the magazine, leaving it "rattling around in the breech", quite as described.

So, before you start tearing into the guts of the pistol, run a couple hundred rounds with a bit of awareness of the right thumb's hold and grip on the gun.

Bet you can duplicate the matter, just by knowingly putting that wee bit of upward pressure under the slide lock lever.  And if you do, you'll then know how to train away from that condition.

Good luck!

182 Speaking of 1936, ever notice that people in that era looked much older for their age. Teenagers looked like they were in their 30's and people in their 40's and 50's looked like they were 70. Even in the 1950's when I was a kid, grandmothers who were in their fifties dressed in black oxfords, longish print dresses, wire-rim glasses, and had gray hair pulled back in a bun. And they all had dumpy figures. If you watch the film Marty with Ernest Borgnine, his mother and aunt are in their fifties and look and act like old ladies and their grown children speak of them that way, who will Mother live with now that she's a widow of 54.

237 Anyone here ever get the urge to sell all their property and go become a monk? Or is it just me? No, it ain't just you. The culture and the condition of our nation is painful to contemplate. It's gone to conditions unimaginable in just a few short years and really, there's not much separating conjectural tyranny with what we are enduring right now. The culture spits venom at goodness and at the kindness of your towns and neighbors, and we are demanded to deny our own selves and our own beliefs in order to avoid fascist mobs. Our president is a low-functioning community college professor with delusions of grandeur and one entire party is filled with plain traitors to the Constitution - while the other is headed by those "leaders" willing to sell their own souls for the adulation of the popular and stupid on television. It can get to the point where you will go, "Am I crazy? Am I the Crazy One?" You're not crazy. Here's Bill Whittle on this: http://youtu.be/3aw3df-LpbY We're being Gaslighted. And you're not crazy. Things are terrible. But - if some of you guys have the gumption to keep going, there might be a way up and out of this - I sure hope so.

282

Peaches,

Looks like we're moving the Houston area Moron Meetup to August.... timelines were just too tight to allow for a June agenda.

So, if you make it to Houston, I'll fix you up with a couple hundred rounds of .38 special, 148 gr. wadcutter ammo.

This is good Winchester Western (WW) stuff from the 1970s.  Vintage ammo, superlative accuracy.

As for an autoshucker?  9mm is recommended, and the remaining question will be, do you prefer a full-size service pistol, a mid size car or purse gun, or an ultra compact hideaway, concealed carry one?

There are suggestions for each category, but ultimately, the best one for you is the one you shoot best, and feel the most comfortable with.

Jim

Possibly one of the new crop of revolver for 9mm or .40 with moon clip? Shotgun is okay but it ain't, obviously, concealable. Everyone goes 12 gauge but I'm so good with 20.

Well now I guess they will have to ask patrons about their sexuality for the reports. What a creepy requirement to put on a business. However my favorite golf story is the joke that David Feherty told about Nancy Pelosi in an elevator and the amount of bullets in the gun We'll take him. There are a bunch of golfers who live on the south end of town at Lake Nona and Windermere. Oh, and Faherty is a hoot and a holler. And a huge Crimson Tide fan. As I mentioned recently, the NBA can kiss my little white ass. I watched about five minutes of the Heat/Pacers game tonight before I came to my senses and turned on the Golf Channel.

I have to walk her 4 miles a day to keep her under control. She won't eat out of a dish, have to put her food on the floor. The list goes on and on.................her worst trait tho is she won't give you the time of day unless it's on her terms. Her terms sometimes means you can be sitting on the toilet and she will try to sit on your lap. Love her to death but she is a lot of work. 383 Caliche? Until you have faced it all other clay pales in comparison. Back in the late 80's a neighbor was quoted 3k to dig a pool. They hit caliche. The quote became 6k. They would have to use dynamite to "dig" the pool. I first faced caliche back when I was 18. I was a weight lifting fanatic in peak physical condition. I swung the pick-ax with all my might....and knocked a 3/8 divot out of the dirt. My eyes nearly popped out of my head in shock. I suspect caliche translates to "I f*cking quit".

Engineering story: some company was trying to develop a ceramic car engine and they came to Alabama for some of that famous red clay to study it. Don't know what became of it, other than it was so hard, it needed to be molded to what was then really close specs. I know you can't get that stuff washed out of socks, and dried, it's harder than Superman's kneecap. Went to a mud race once and they had people race each other on foot down the track. Two girls got stuck in it waist deep and it took them almost an hour to get them out.

Basically, dog walks right next to you while you yank on the leash to make this happen. Pretty quickly, retrievers get it and get in line.

A friend had a 3/4 wolf breed who was acting up. We did the whole grab the ruff on that dog and it changed the attitude 100%. Never growled at anyone but strangers for the rest of her life. Did run into one bad chow, it had to be put down. It would not stop staring back and growling. Sure enough, a week later it bit its owner - bad - who had to shoot the bastard while it was clamped on him. Wasn't rabid, just bad wiring/inbred.

No, love.  Just use them as a reward for good behavior.  Dogs are so easy, they're food whores and, really, they actually WANT you to be the alpha.  Takes all the pressure off them, they do quite well when the boundaries are clear.

Naw... almost everyone in America does that.  It rewards begging and whining, however.  It encourages the behavior and makes the dog dominant.

This may come in handy with your kid and husband, as well ...lol.

484 She was also on Animal Planet. I think the show was "It's Me or the Dog". B'Gal adores teh Dog Whisperer and watches a lot of his shows. He'll be the first to tell you that you have to exert dominance over a dog or you'll have all kinds of trouble. One of my best buds had a Rot/Shepherd mix that he trained as an attack dog (he lived in that part of town). Jabba weighed more than I did when he was alive and was the smartest dog I've ever had the pleasure to have known. He loved me and I loved him. I was introduced to Jabba as another leader of the pack and learned a lot about dog psychology from him. He almost ripped the throat out of one of my girlfriends when I stupidly took her with me to feed him while my buddy was out of town. She tinkled herself, just a little, when he went after her because he didn't know her.

And I'll add that IMHO, these days the "stars" of the game get hurt more often because of these rules.  I'm old enough to remember the Oilers' great years and if a player sneezed at Gretzky Dave Semenko would be in the guy's face.  The stars need to be protected by teammates.

549 OTOH, I have another sister who (years ago) I found out wanted to see what the big deal was about "The Godfather." She blanched when I told her it was almost three hours long, but God bless her, was willing to stick it out anyway (our backup plan was to make it a two-night event). When it was over, she could see why it took three hours to pack in all the rich goombah deliciousness.

550 I don't see many movies in the theater any more. Here is why" 1) They are expensive as heck, even with senior matinee. 2) I am surrounded by rude people, coughing up lungers, crying infants, texting, talking, kicking the back of my chair. 3) You still have to sit thru twenty minutes of advertising. I am OK with five minutes, after that, fuck you, I ain't buying a ticket.

You may think I'm wrong, but I think Lindros made a big mistake when he demanded to not go to Quebec City.  I think his career would have lasted longer if it had been there, and later Colorado.  Stanley Cup?  Maybe not.

557 navybrat: also correctamundo. Also, maybe I've been lucky but I've never had to deal with really rude patrons who talk all the way through the movie. Maybe because I tend to avoid crowded showtimes and prefer weekday matinees. One of my favorite libs to hate, Jeffrey Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere, recently posted a diatribe against a-- yep, you guessed it, African-American-- fellow moviegoer who not only was rude, but *threatened him with violence* when he complained. He proceeded to post racist crapola in a manner that would make him go apeshit if anyone even remotely conservative said the same thing at their blog. Thankfully, his whole comment section (even the other libs) was happy to call him out on his outrageous hypocrisy.

Sounds like a reasonable pairing.  ...and I love how beers have become so diverse and more respected as "pairings" for food.

I offer NO respect to the word "foodie".  I hate it with the strength of one-thousand suns.  I also drink lawnmower beer, mainly.

What I enjoy is something that plays alongside another flavor and allows me to go beyond the "peanuts and Budweiser" I've been used to.

643 But according to VA inspector general reports and other documents that have gone overlooked in the current firestorm, federal officials knew about the scheme at the heart of the scandal -- falsifying VA records to cover up treatment delays -- years before Obama became president. VA officials first learned of the problems in 2005, when George W. Bush was entering his second term, and the problems went unfixed for the duration of his presidency.

Jim Nicholson, former Secretary of Veterans Affairs (2005-2007), said on CNN (I believe) that during the last years of the Bush Administration the VA was putting in place a new system for appointments, at a cost of over $200 million, but the Obama Administration abandoned it before it was compete.

IMO, it's a terrible series, with low production values and riddled with historical inaccuracies.  I'm not sure they are biased in one direction or another, but generally it is a dumbed-down version of The World at War.  The references to WWI give it a slightly broader scope, but the inability of the writers/producers to understand basic history make it an embarrassment as a documentary.

714 While on the subject of the seven deadly sins, we're pretty clear on lust, pride, sloth, gluttony, and envy -- but the other two are more interesting.

The first is "greed" -- or, sometimes, "avarice"....and, maybe, "covetousness" (which links it back to the ten commandments). Yet, wanting to get ahead and have nice things makes the world go 'round. The boundaries on this sin seem the most weakly defined.

And, then, there's "wrath" or "rage" -- what the heck is that doing in there? While the others seem like character flaws, this one seems like poor impulse control. Nobody sets out one day to indulge their wrath, as one might for lust, gluttony, or sloth.

Self control is something Christians are supposed to maintain if at all possible.  The loss of control may cause you to do things you regret, and may cause you to sin to try and hide what you've done.

Or at least, that's my understanding of why those are in there.  Somebody who actually knows something may offer a better explanation.

Take into consideration every time you've sold a car, face-to-face.  If both parties think they've won?  Interestingly, they have.

Should you decide to lie and sell a mis-represented product?  Once?  How many times should you "take advantage" through lies of omission?

Your tolerance shouldn't depend solely upon the market.

That is my Free Market, non-denominational, morality-play "take" on that ambiguity.

I'm really pointing out that they're somewhat incongruous on the list -- and, thus, might be imperfect descriptions of deeper concepts. As an example, "greed" has a specific meaning within transactions -- it means to drive something beyond mutual satisfaction into maximum personal satisfaction on your end and barely tolerated acceptance on the other side. It spreads misery and doesn't encourage repeat business.

But "covetousness" means something else. It means that you're visiting your neighbor and he has a nice toy -- a motorcycle, shop-tool, swimming pool, whatever -- and, instead of thinking "nifty" and working out how you could do likewise, you think "I want his toy......"

This could very well be a result of a process similar to where the Inuit supposedly have 87 words for "snow" -- we live in an age where greedy and avaricious feelings are commonplace. But it also seems that there's a certain missing-of-the-point. One central concept that can be roped into those three words is a cardinal sin....but peripheral elements to those words may not be.

727 I see it as being about your relationship with the other party.

If you're greedy, you aren't respecting the other party, you are seeking to have a one-sided domination instead.

If you're covetous, again you aren't respecting the other party, you are instead wanting to take something at the expense of the other.

That's a good description of how I look at it, as well. It sort of dovetails with "bind not the mouths of the kine that tread the grain."

730 Covetousness always carries a connotation of wanting to have without earning. It's the kind of desire which leads to wanting to take something by hook or by crook. If you think your neighbor has a nice car and say to yourself "I'm going to buy one of those when I get the money", no problem. If you offer to buy your neighbor's car at a price he agrees to? No problem. If you go to your Senator and say that it's unfair that some people are able to buy better cars than others and that the nice cars should be redistributed to people that can't afford them, such as yourself? That's covetous.

DPMS or Armalite.  I want AR10 in 308.  I like Armalite but I am trying to see the other side of things and you can't say DPMS is a bad choice.  What I want is the best choice for my needs.
