Pothole Crew Suspended for Fixing Pothole

Three County Cork road workers were returning from a job in Carrigaline, Ireland, when they saw a pothole. They stopped and repaired the pothole. A Health and Safety worker saw them, and the three men were consequently suspended from their jobs because they had not filed the proper paperwork for this particular pothole before repairing it.

Well Form 27B-6 sure is a bitch to fill out.

108 After a long day of real and semi- Biblical texts, at long last Vikings. And I run up against my first historicity issues, in my face. Thrilling horse chase from the hero's home, on prancing big Arabians. Pretty sure domesticated horses in Scandi in the 8th century would have been those smooth-gaited ponies.

Then, a Swedish earl arrives for an arranged marriage deal. He says it was a very rough crossing. Now, those aren't the fjords of Denmark we've been seeing. I don't think a sea trip from Sweden to Norse country would be called a crossing.

It's a thriller, and good as gold in attitude. I hope they're not going to kill me with a thousand little detail cuts.

188 I've noticed a pattern with Trollboy. He shows up here on holidays, almost invariably. He was here on Christmas Eve, New Year's -- I don't know if I read the ONT on Valentine's Day or Carnival this year. Now Easter. You see what this means, right? We're all he has. No family (that can stand to have him around), no friends, nothing. When others get together to enjoy each other's company and feast in celebration of faith or secular good cheer, he has nothing. An empty room, some cold instant ramen, and a glowing screen. When everyone else is having fun, he sits alone and spews his hate at us. For just a few seconds it makes him feel strong and powerful. The thought that he might make someone else unhappy is the only thing he has left that he can enjoy. He knows he will never inspire joy in others, or know love, or feel pride in children. He cannot experience fellowship or any human bond at all -- like all liberals, he only knows how to hate those who don't think the things he's been told to think. Why do you go on, Trollboy? Why not end it now? I'm sure you have lots of pills in the bathroom -- you strike me as the sort of person who is constantly beset by imaginary ills. Swallow them all and let the darkness take you. For once in your life you will bring a tiny flicker of joy to others.

202 I hope the Astros in the AL works out and builds a good rivalry with the Rangers. All sports should have a Dallas-Houston rivalry. Same way all sports should have a NY-Boston rivalry and an LA-SF rivalry. Dallas and Houston naturally hate each other and always will. Atlanta's problem as a sports town is there is no natural rival.

Cincinnati and St. Louis in baseball, although that's a very civil rivalry.  I've sat near St. Louis Cardinal fans in Cincy a bunch of times, and it's always very polite and friendly.  A couple of years ago, there was a family of Cardinal fans in front of us, and we had a good time talking baseball all through the game.

The Cubs fans are different.  They're animals,  like Grateful Dead groupies following their team around.  They think the world owes them something. Sad, really.

310 From my POV the decline of our culture began when baseball was surpassed by football as the national sport. Baseball is beautiful strategy on a pastoral field punctuated with short periods of extreme athleticism. America used to be the world series, a series where the Pirates could beat the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth of the 7th game with 2 outs when a second baseman not know for hitting big homers won the series. Now its the gaudy multi-billion hype of the super bowl. So goes the decline of a once great nation.

313 Just spent way too much of today arguing with a schmuck on Reddit about the contraceptive mandate. He thinks that because contraceptives/abortion are a private matter between a doctor and a patient, that a third party can be forced to pay for it without their having a say. Also, because the mandate affects everyone, that it is okay to force people to violate their moral convictions. Not to mention, that that schmuck believes that abortion costs and insurer less than raising a child through age 26, forcing a person to pay for another abortion is not subsidizing it because actuarially it'll cots less. *Sigh* the left will not be happy until people are forced to act the way the left wants them to act. Once that is achieved, making them believe that there are five fingers becomes a fait accompli...

PoliticalHat, these liberals nowadays are more or less shallow and braindead.  I actually have a little bit of respect for liberals who can construct a logical argument and are willing to think about things like consistency of their position or long-term ramifications of what they propose.  Instead, about 90% of liberals nowadays only advocate for things like the contraception mandate because (a) it helps Obama, (b) it hurts Republicans, (c) it's sticking it to the filthy dirty churches, especially those hayseed rednecks and those pedophile Catholic priests, and (d) because they just feeeeeeel entitled to free shit.

You should see some of the comments on Slate.  I still remember when Slate used to be somewhat classy.  Now it is just a slightly more pretentious version of Daily Kos.  It really is Idiocracy in action.

341 Here is a logical fallacy that I am picking up on these days. It is used by the Left. Incessantly, as a matter of fact.

That, unless your course of action, your policy, your creed, whatever the case may me, unless it can be proven to be effective 100 percent of the time, it should be abandoned.

Now, think on how completely idiotic this is.

They (the Left) are mainly using this argument as a buttress for gun control. See, the DA in Texas got killed. He had guns. His guns did not save him. Therefore, ban guns.

OK, now let us examine that same logistical application as regards other public policy.

Medicine. Unless you can cure a malady 100 percent of the time, with no side effects, the cure should be abandoned. This is absolutely ludicrous. Medical remedies which cure less than half of the subjects are routinely approved.

Taxes. Unless you can collect 100 percent of all the taxes owed by all of the tax cheats, you should abandon tax collection efforts. Again, ridiculous. The IRS and other state agencies routinely pursue tax collection from a very small percentage of cheaters, and the rest of us fall in to line.

Speeders on the freeway. Unless you can catch them all, you should not catch any. WHAT? Any of us freeway commuters know that you can catch about 10 percent of all speeders and have an effect on the speeding public, in that, they will slow down.

More examples from the Moron Horde? I know there must be many.

Logic. I wish more of us used it.

This is particularly annoying from lefties because none of their shit works, not even a little bit. Affirmative action? Promotes the unfit beyond their abilities. Head Start? Bazillions of dollars, worse than useless. Redistribution of results? -- breaks the feedback loop that encourages productive, worthy activities.....leading inevitably to suboptimal waste. Green power? Needs "instant-on" regular power as backup....which just so happens to bypass all the benefits of well-tuned regular power systems.

Their entire worldview is a humongous rust-bucket of FAIL, wrapped around vacuous "feel-good" slogans based on logical fallacies.....and then they set up "conservative" strawmen to refute those whose experience and talents have them going, "wait a second on that....."

Why are the streets not filled with people protesting a country that has WMD's and is threatening to use them against our homes. Is the brain death complete (rhetorical question only). Outrage would overwhelm the media's ability to express it if we put one mass murdering savage under duress, but it is totally okay with our brothers and sisters that someone is threatening to nuke us. Well good then, I hope they at least try. We need a serious wake up call. I guess communists don't  want to  talk bad about other communists.

Carhartt is made in the US.  In the late 1990's I did the Engineering work for the Network and Wireless Inventory Control System in the new plant they were just finishing!  As far as I know they were still in place in 2007 when our warranty ran out!

369 When I lived in MA in the mid-80's the only potholes that ever got fixed were on the MA Turnpike.

On RT 9, which I traveled every day, they'd wait until the pothole got big enough to put an orange barrel in, then they would put the orange barrel in and consider it "fixed".  There were some on RT 9 that had those orange barrels in them for over 9 months.

Posted by: @PurpAv at March 31, 2013 09:34 PM (/gHaE)

370 @363 @PurpAv I was in MA in the early 80's out on Rt 2 (Ft Devens) and there was one Orange Barrel in a pothole out there for the whole damn three years!

Posted by: Old Dog at March 31, 2013 09:43 PM (tQYJH)

371 One of the local papers used to run a weekly photo series on the most notorious potholes in the greater Boston area.

Even public shaming wasn't enough to move those fucking apparatchiks to do anything.   It was really quite amazing how absolutely unresponsive liberal government can be to ordinary daily concerns.

There will be more and more of this in the future.  People are gonna have to fix their own potholes if they want then fixed.  With concrete being cheap, a few bags of that 4hr quickset and a 5gal pail of water can fix most pretty quick.  Blitz strikes in the middle of the night when there's no traffic would have the road ready for morning rush hour.

$15 for a few bags of concrete and an hours time, or $2,000 in repairs to the front end of your car.  Not a hard choice really.

There's nothing anyone could offer me that would get me to move back there permanently.  Even if I were offered $1M/yr to work there, I'd pass.

I've come to realize peace of mind is worth far more than money.  The level of daily aggravation was debilitating.

375 Beat you, I got the hell outta there in 83. In 97 I was offered $275 G's a year to go back and work on a Communications Development job. Mentioned it to the Wife and almost got kicked out of the house before I could mention that I had refused! She hates that place worse than either of us I guarantee!

376 Well night all.  Starting this Camp NaNoWriMo on a good footing.  1,700 words down.  So already a few words ahead of where I need to be on day one.

So they just *lie* like a freakin' rug - and I bet they totally believe it, no matter how much reality hits them - because it *has* to be correct, it just *has* to!

I accidentally borrowed the attention span of a five-year-old tonight.

379 Merovign, so what did you give the five year old in trade?  A nice chocolate Easter bunny?

383 Looks like I have the place all to myself. Think I'll go walkabout and see what's out there on the cold, cruel web.
