Overnight Open Thread (3-30-2014)
— Maetenloch

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs...

And do what needs to be done when it's time for it.

Admiral Jeremiah Denton RIP

On July 18, 1965 then CDR Denton was shot down over North Vietnam where he would be a POW for the next seven and half years. After extended torture and solitary confinement the North Vietnamese thought he was sufficiently softened up to be used in propaganda videos. They were wrong.

Denton's name first came to the attention of the American public in 1966, during a television interview arranged by the North Vietnamese in Hanoi. Prior to the interview, torture and threats of more torture were applied to intimidate him to "respond properly and politely." His captors thought he was softened up sufficiently to give the North Vietnamese their propaganda line

...During the interview, after the Japanese interviewer's recitation of alleged U.S. "war atrocities," Denton was asked about his support of U.S. policy concerning the war. He replied: "I don't know what is happening now in Vietnam, because the only news sources I have are North Vietnamese, but whatever the position of my government is, I believe in it, I support it, and I will support it as long as I live." The audience was aghast at his unexpected answer and the room went dead silent.
Throughout the interview, while responding to questions and feigning sensitivity to harsh lighting, Denton blinked his eyes in Morse Code, repeatedly spelling out a covert message: T-O-R-T-U-R-E. The interview, which the Japanese journalist clandestinely took from Hanoi to Tokyo and sold to ABC was broadcast on American television on May 17, 1966[. It] was the first confirmation that American POWs in Vietnam were being tortured.

You can watch his message in this video. The Morse code for 'torture' is -  ---  .-.  -  ..-  .-.  .

Gawker's Adam Weinstein Wants to Put You in Jail for Being a Climate Change 'Denier'

Those denialists should face jail. They should face fines. They should face lawsuits from the classes of people whose lives and livelihoods are most threatened by denialist tactics.

...I'm talking about Rush and his multi-million-dollar ilk in the disinformation business. I'm talking about Americans for Prosperity and the businesses and billionaires who back its obfuscatory propaganda. I'm talking about public persons and organizations and corporations for whom denying a fundamental scientific fact is profitable, who encourage the acceleration of an anti-environment course of unregulated consumption and production that, frankly, will screw my son and your children and whatever progeny they manage to have.

Those malcontents must be punished and stopped

I wonder if these climate gulags will be heated with Green-based energy sources.

Russia Supposedly Eyeing Finland Once Again

Well good luck with that. As the USSR learned during the Winter War the Finns are not to be trifled with. Simo Häyhä may have died in 2002 but the spirit of sisu lives on. The fact that Finnish is one of the few non-Indo-European languages left in Europe is telling. (Hint: it's not due to geography).

One of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest ex-advisers has claimed that the ex-KGB agent ultimately wants to reclaim Finland for Russia.

Andrej Illiaronov, Putin's economic adviser between 2000 and 2005 and now senior member of the Cato Institute think tank, said that "parts of Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic States and Finland are states where Putin claims to have ownership."

Of course there's a big difference between wanting something and being able to take it.

Argentina Is Joined In The Supreme Court By The Coalition Of Weasels

As they try to weasel out of their debts yet again.

Never mentioned is that the 'crisis' in Argentina actually consists of nothing more than that the politicians would rather spend money on various forms of vote buying than on paying their debts. They don't have to pay for any wars. (The Falklands war was way back in 1982.) They haven't had any natural disasters to speak of. Whatever crisis they have is completely of their own making, born of incompetent economic policy and waste

Argentina should be a wealthy nation yet they've continually lurched from bankruptcy to bankruptcy. The fault is strictly their own.

Why Were the Lights on at the Earth Hour Concert?

Or is it just another excuse for a self-congratulatory party.

Fucking For Denmark

Well based on the lady Danes I've met, I'm totally willing to help them out in their time of baby need.

The Dune in Your Head vs the One that Almost Got Made

Which could have have been awesome even given the special effects technology of the time.

Finally, the story of the greatest science fiction epic never made has finally been told. Jodorowsky's Dune is a new documentary about that beautiful, crazy-ambitious, disaster of an adaptation.

"They did everything right, really. Maybe a little too, right, you know?" said director Frank Pavich, when I reached him earlier this week via telephone from New York City.

"They" were Chilean cult filmmaker Jodorowsky, the self-taught visionary behind El Topo (1970) and The Holy Mountain (1973), and his French producer Michel Seydoux. This was 1975, and Jodorowsky had assembled a dream team of actors and artists to bring alive Herbert's tale of a feudal-like interstellar culture driven by the market for a valuable substance caled the "spice." David Carradine was to play Duke Leto, Jodorowsky's 12 year old son Brontis was cast as Paul Atreides, Udo Kier (Andy Warhol's favorite actor) would be Piter De Vries, and Orson Welles was slated to play Baron Harkonnen. (Apparently, Welles was lured by promises of on-set French bistro food.)

...Even Mick Jagger and Salvador Dali had agreed to be in the movie.

And then add in H.R. Giger, Dan O'Bannon, and soundtrack contributions from Pink Floyd.

Swedish Man Buys Army Tank 'on Impulse'

Well I would have too if I found one in the same condition for just $11,700. Of course then the hard part would be explaining to the wife that the driveway now belongs to the APC so she'll have to park on the street.

Jimmy Johansson, a 23-year-old from Borlänge in central Sweden, can now add tank to his list of possessions. But the 76,000 kronor ($11,700) purchase wasn't something he planned.

"It was just an impulse buy from beginning... I went to look at a motor and my eyes were drawn to this instead," he told The Local.

The PBV 401, a Soviet-built fully amphibious tank that weighs around 12 tonnes and travels at a top speed of 80 kilometres per hour, is parked out the front of his grandfather's house while Johansson decides what to do with it.

And the best part of the story:

The purchase was encouraged by Johansson's mother.

60 I am sad I missed common core discussion last night. So I am going to burst some bubbles here 1)if my kid goes to a private school I don't have to worry about common core. Well yes that would be nice, but depending on the textbooks the school buys, the curriculum may end up being common core compliant by default. At the very least, since the college entrance exams, like the SAT and ACT are being updated to reflect the common core curriculum, your kid may still have it eff up his or her life. 2)The awful examples we have seen of common core are local district problems, that isn't common core's fault. Yeah, no. The whole point of common core is in the first word "common" the poor worksheet examples you see are across the board. It could be that your particular district isn't quite there in the implementation yet, but you will get there soon enough. Look, they sold this as a common curriculum across all the states, its key selling point was stamping out the differences.

Ironically, a girlfriend who was Danish a few years back basically - uh, well, screwed the pooch, so to speak, with me - by being so baby-making obsessed that it scared me off.  She was no Emma (from the video), but a reasonably fetching slim blonde with a delicious (odd) British colonial accent (she grew up in southern Africa).

On that map - hard to believe Indonesia is mostly a tea country.  But perhaps others can confirm that.  Also, I see no data for Ethiopia, but ...... come on.  Think we can reasonably guess it's a coffee country as it is the birthplace of said beverage and the oldest cultural ritual is the coffee ceremony.

Finland.  Hmmm. I'm thinking, at most, that Putin might have mused about Karelia (part of Finland that has changed hands a few times).  Hard to believe Putin has any designs on Finland in general.  While on that topic, I continue to see no reason to think Putin's goals go beyond the age-old ones (suitably modified for the current situation) of maintaining a buffer on Russian borders, to exclude too much influence by major foreign powers.  That, plus energy transportation routes, completely explains Ukraine.  Georgia is different - Russia is obsessed with Georgia and always will be, for not entirely clear practical reasons.  I still think any messing with the Baltics will be to chill their desire for too-close integration with NATO and the west.  It's not territorial, and won't be, but won't end, either.

rickl, will check out that video - B-24, most produced heavy bomber of WWII (still surprises me to read that).  I believe my favorite (astonishing) WWII US production stat was that at the surrender in September 1945, the US was rolling off a combat aircraft every 5 minutes, 24/7.  Do the arithmetic on that.  And we "switched off" ship-building in 1944 - yet our WWII production patrolled the seas, first with us and NATO allies, then with other navies, until very recently, 60 years later (need to check which WWII hulls are still in commission, somewhere).

Ricardo K., I have been planning to finally read up more on the Winter War and Continuation War.  But one thing I already learned from research on winter warfare in general was that the Finns would target the Soviet field kitchens.  Troops in those conditions experience a catastrophic drop-off in effectiveness if they don't get hot food at least every two days or so.   One of many smart and devastating things the Finns did to punch way above their weight.

CO Alex, hmmm.  It was for an article published back in the early 80s.  Even if I could find the article, I might not be able to recall the source.  And I think most of my articles are still in storage back in DC.  This was way before digitization of media, so paper is all there is.  I did a lot of interviews with USMC (they had northern Norway mission along with UK Royal Marines and Dutch marines - ?? - ) and spent a week with the Canadian Forces in the field during their big winter exercise related to their northern NATO role.

So for now - no, sorry.  But I will try to think/search about it and come up with something.

164 When James Stockdale died, there was some mocking on the local radio station I had on in the car on the drive to work. I seriously thought about driving over to the station and punching the two idiots on the air in the mouth. *** I came to love Dennis Miller for what he said in defense of Adm. Stockdale during a routine at, IIRC, Georgetown University. He mentioned Stockdale and the little shits took the bait and laughed, and then he laid into them. It was fantastic. They walked away that night having learned something.

I'm not getting the logic here.

Jeez, most of the military guys I've known have rather, er, earthy senses of humor.   In fact, there were probably a few of them sitting around thinking of song titles in that thread.

166 "The Germans called is 'halb-starke' because it was not as heavily armored and weaponed as the B-17. But it was faster and carried a larger bomb load." And it was also the first true "strategic" bomber the U.S. ever produced. The B-17 was not. The B-17 was designed to attack fleets attacking the continental U.S. The idea was an airplane that could carry the bomb load of a medium bomber but do it flying faster and farther than a medium bomber in quick reaction to an enemy fleet detected headed our way. Look at the bomb bay on a -17 versus a -24. The B-24 carried more internal fuel and had a larger bomb bay than a B-17. The B-24 developed a reputation for lighting up quicker for the very reason it carried more fuel and munitions aboard it that could go up.

169 So, I patted myself on the back for exercising some semblance of fiscal and alcoholic restraint when I limited my purchase to a mere pint of Johnny Walker Black in anticipation of drinking it during today's UK basketball game. "Well done, DDR!" I said to myself. "You'll have that extra dough in your pocket and you'll feel a lot better the next day at work. Kudos, me!"

Here I am two days later, stone sober and struggling with flu-like symptoms, though not quite as severe, with a pint of Johnny Black sitting unopened on my computer desk. I guess I can hold onto it 'til the UK/Wisconsin game. Maybe.

183 Someone should ask President Obama if he thinks Putin is acting out of weakness when he invades Finland and all of those other places on his hit parade wish list. I'd be curious to know his take on the matter. In my view, we've never had a worse President. James Buchanan's been holding that title for a long time because he's suspected (with some evidence) of colluding with his Secretary of War, John B. Floyd, to concentrate federal armories in the South and scatter regular army units across the continent as a preparatory step for Southern secession and the possible (we now know certain) outbreak of hostilities--in a word: treason. Does sheer, wilful, narcissistically inspired incompetence beat out treason? I think it does if Obama's fecklessness, grandiosity and idiotic worldview ultimately bring about a war with a nuclear-capable enemy. As an aside, Finland technically lost the Russo-Finnish War. Because of manpower attrition and the damage to their industrial base, the Finns were ultimately forced to come to terms with the Soviets and give up territory and make other concessions. For his part, Stalin wasn't the type to worry overmuch about high casualty rates, but even absolute dictators cannot afford million-man losses without (at least somewhat) endangering their hold on power.

Heard good things. Directed by Frank Perry, who was Katy's uncle. Posted by: qdpsteve Yeah, it's a weird counter-culture swipe at the LA Suburban life. Burt roams the neighborhood, swimming in all his neighbor's pools, making fools of them, revealing an affair he had with one woman, and then he gets home and his house is deserted because his family has left him or they're dead. I forget now. If you like Lancaster, I guess you might like the movie. Lancaster was a big Hollywood leftie as I have read years later, and although a terrific actor, also a big asshole too.

I saw it once on late night TV during the 80s. It was an odd movie and was supposed to show the inanity of modern suburban life as Lancaster swam from one yard's pool to another. Unfortunately they forgot to include an actual plot. And the payoff was stupidly trivial.

I think the worst part is that he really should have learned the lessons of 2008—it almost sounded like he did for a few months, for example when he said in interviews that campaign finance reform was dead due to the Democrats having happily taken the legislation and let him bind himself to it alone. Kirk Douglas, his friend, made several movies with Wayne and they actually became pretty good friends. Lancaster was a terrific actor in certain roles, but a prima donna in other ways. But he's dead, so really, what difference does it make at this point? It just sours me when watching certain movies that he was in, like "Run Silent, Run Deep".

Posted by: qdpsteve at March 30, 2014 11:33 PM (HVI5a) I saw that Lancaster movie once, years ago, and then later studied the John Cheever short story upon which it was based when I was a Literature major in college. 'The Swimmer' was a truly good Cheever short story, as all Cheever short stories are, but not as good as most of those he wrote (in my view), and a story that I don't think translated well to a feature-length film. Burt Lancaster's performance is solid in it, though, so there's that. I have a 'best of' collection of John Cheever's short stories and take it out from time to time and just pick one to read at random. He's that good.

325 I was cruising around the intertubes this morning and compiled a few things. I was going to post this on the astronomy thread, but there wasn't one tonight. So here goes. A listing of Solar System objects by size: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Solar_System_objects_by_size All of the planets and named moons are shown, as well as selected examples of asteroids, trans-Neptunian objects, and comets. There are hundreds of thousands of known objects that are not shown, not mention the ones we don't know about. The outer solar system is becoming a pretty complicated place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_trans-Neptunian_objects All of the objects on this list have been discovered since 1992 except Pluto. And Pluto is not even the most massive; it lost that place to Eris, discovered in 2005 from photos taken in 2003. Some have stable orbits that are in various gravitational resonances with Neptune, and some don't. Some orbit more or less along the ecliptic plane, and some don't. Some cross Neptune's orbit, like Pluto does, and others are completely outside it. Astronomers now classify them as members of various populations, including Kuiper Belt objects, Centaurs, scattered disk objects, inner Oort Cloud objects, and there are some whose classification is in dispute. This is giving me a headache. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuiper_belt http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centaur_(minor_planet) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scattered_disc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oort_cloud One thing's for sure: There are a hell of a lot of potential SMODs out there. Reminder: Comet Hyakutake was discovered on January 31, 1996, and made its closest approach to Earth on March 25. Only four comets in the previous 100 years came closer. It was heading almost directly for us when it was first spotted. Its nucleus was about three miles in diameter. So, the subject matter is interesting enough for a dramatization but not to have read anything about it previously? Where did you think Andrew Davies, the writer of the series, got the information to base it upon? Venus, of course, but the "surface gravity" of Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are also close. Earth-like gravity is the most important factor for long term possible human habitation, yet people are obsessed with Mars! Venus is actually most Earth-like. Not on the surface, but 50 km above the surface. Air would be a lifting gas, and aside from the sulfuric acid, the temperature and gravity would be Earth-like. Yes, cloud cities not just on Venus, but on Saturn, Uranun, and Neptune would be our best hope for long-term extra-Terran human civilization. So, how about it? A HQ floating cloud city on Venus!

379 Well, we just had a small disaster that may have prevented a much worse one.

My mother was putting together some stuff for dinner and had a rice dish going in the microwave. We have a high powered (1250W) model and apparently this item was far more sensitive to the higher power than the other varieties she had recently produced via microwave. Smoke began billowing out of the microwave but I didn't notice upstairs because my vent is kept closed due to my room being much warmer than the others. Combined with the closed door I had a bubble of clear air but my sister was in the bathroom when the smoke started coming through the vent there.

We made my mother sit outside rather than allow her any more smoke inhalation, then got every window open and got the fans out that normally would have stayed packed away a few more months. (Especially this year.) Throughout all of this none of the smoke alarms made a peep. I pressed the test button on the unit near the kitchen and it screeched strongly, indicating the battery is good. (Most of you likely know that smoke alarms are designed to drive you up the wall when the battery falls below a certain level, forcing you to take action.)

So why the hell did none of the alarms go off? In the past we've had incidents where they were far too sensitive to normal cooking, now they've gone to the other extreme. If we had a fire there would have been no alert and those of us upstairs could have been trapped.

Something to look into this week.

I was kind of surprised the guy waited as long as he did to drop to the lower floor. IIRC, he is not a young guy, 50-something, so he may have needed some serious melting glass motivation before trying that maneuver. At an earlier age he may have felt able to get all the way down on his own. I imagine that ledge looked terribly narrow from his perspective.

413 So why the hell did none of the alarms go off? In the past we've had incidents where they were far too sensitive to normal cooking, now they've gone to the other extreme. If we had a fire there would have been no alert and those of us upstairs could have been trapped. Something to look into this week. Posted by: Epobirs at March 31, 2014 12:15 AM (bPxS6) Smoke alarms require significant particulate matter to go off. They use interruption of Americium alpha particles by smoke particulate matter to set them off. Perhaps the smoke was not that packed full of particulate matter? Maybe the batteries need changing? I'd test them with smoke or perhaps blowing fine sand or powder on them. If they do not go off then, then have them inspected and/or replaced.

What sort of gear do you have in mind? For something like yellowstone, you'd be pretty much covered with gas masks + spare filters, sealed water and rifle. Either you're won't have anything to worry about if you're close, or, if not, it'll be a shit load of ash. Breathing and water will be the main concerns.

I don't recall if it is the unit that was here when we first moved in almost ten years ago. I vaguely recall the HOA or the property management company replacing them all at one point. (We were originally renters but my sister now holds the mortgage. Long story involving the owner being dead for two years before the bank noticed.)

The smoke should have been far more than adequate to cause a reaction. It was getting visibly cloudy downstairs before we got the windows open.

It would have really sucked if this happened a month ago when it would have been far colder outside..

426 Smoke alarms require significant particulate matter to go off. They use interruption of Americium alpha particles by smoke particulate matter to set them off. ---------------------- Not exactly. Normally, molecules in the air are ionized by the radiation (Americium) source. The ionized stuff allows a small current to flow between the cathode and anode of the detector apparatus. When smoke particles enter the ionization chamber, the ionization (and current) is disrupted, BING! Alarm. Optical detectors, of course, merely sense a reduction in the transparency of the air.

I think the 2 halves of that emitter detector marriage degrade over time. And just like going deaf ( think of grandma as the emitter and grandpa as the detector) as one gets old but slowly compensating for it. They just go to crap on communicating with each other. So you end up with a lot of false alarms or total ignoring and no alarm. They say (or some say) replace your smoke detectors every 5 years for this reason.

Yeah a bang stick will probably be required. As for the rest of the stuff, regarding yellowstone, it'll be lower tier priority. Depending how close to the caldera you are and winds and stuff, a lot of day to day stuff won't be terribly affected. You will likely be able to still get that stuff. An immediate use supply wouldn't hurt, though. If it happens and you're in an affected area, you most likely won't be hunkering down. You'll be on the move away from the ashfall. You could well be able to still get that stuff as you go. Unless you're in the super heavy ashfall area and you can't move... you should check on that. It likely won't be particularly destructive outside the blast zone, what with surges and flows and stuff, so there won't be huge infrastructure damage. Unless yellowstone starts to build up massively before it goes kerblooey. If it does you'll know to get the fuck out pronto, anyway.

If it does goes super explosive it'll take it'll be bleeding obvious for awhile, beforehand. But yeah, it could be a near extinction level type dealie if it decides to get it's krakatoa on.

Ever have a nosebleed that just wouldn't quit?

Damn sinuses.

It's no big deal...it happens when my allergies act up, and I take stuff to dry me up then blow my nose too hard.

Lying down with a cold pack on my face usually stops the nosebleed.

Was here earlier...and was remiss in not saying:

Thanks for the great ONT, Mætenloch.

Lots of juicy content.

Even though I don't always comment on it...doesn't mean I don't read it all and appreciate it.

It's humbling to read about men like Admiral Denton.

Doing what he did in that interview...blinking the Morse Code message...was an incredibly brave thing to do, knowing what would surely happen to him if his captors found out.

And when they did find out...the all-night torture sessions that he was punished with, were so severe that even the guards "shed tears they could not hide".

Wow.

Rest in Peace, Admiral Denton.

May we be worthy of your sacrifices.

553 The fucking cat used to be happy killing a mouse overnight and leaving the corpse in the middle of the kitchen floor to be admired and celebrated by wave after wave of breakfasters. Now, he's decided it would be more fun to haul the near-dead critter to the bedroom of the house's earliest riser, taunt and torture the wretch in the dark with a vigorous 20 rounds of catch-and-release, then let the bastard take refuge behind the bookcases. Can't go back to sleep knowing that another round of mayhem could erupt at any second. And it's dark and cold outside, and I'm bound by the house's quiet rules, which exempt the cat and the wind rattling the windows. There will be no sun at sunrise. Winter will never end. In terms of quantity, that lost hour is equivalent to the season two episode of Continuum that sliced the other end off the baloney of sleep, but that last hour is always so much tastier.

556 I learned Morse for R with the mnemonic picture of a Formula One racecar. Dots represent wheels at either end, with a dash in between representing the car's body. So I can blink out any message that can be spelled with the letters R, S and O. I'm off to search the web for the rest of this memorization system.

Posted by: Little Miss Spellcheck at March 31, 2014 01:05 AM (a5ljo)
