Quote of the Day

Those of long memory may recall that my bestest chicken ever was mille fleur (who, sadly, has joined the choir eternal), so this is a bit of a science experiment: seeing how much of Lucia's personality was mille fleur personality.

There is something to this, you know. Different colors (and certainly different breeds) share personality characteristics. It's uncontroversial in livestock circles; you get into trouble when you apply it to people. Except gingers.

Mark Steyn on His Critics

So I'm disinclined to get into a Who's Got The Biggest Swinging Islamophobic Dong? contest with you. In that Easter piece I said that Islam cannot abide the other and is incompatible with a pluralist society, and throughout last week I reiterated my call for an end to mass Muslim immigration. If that's insufficiently butch for you, if that's "hampering attempts to stop the Islamization of the west", then please bugger off and get on with stopping the Islamization of the west your own way. And then you wouldn't need to mischaracterize what I wrote and put your words in my mouth, would you?

By the way, this campaign to "stop the Islamization of the west that I'm "hampering", where is it? Is it a club you've formed? Are you the chairman? Can anyone fill in a membership application? Or are you blackballing?

If I sound a little tetchier than usual, it's because Sebastian Faulks' farewell to The Independent put me in a wistful and somewhat elegiac mode, mourning my carefree younger self. So I hope you'll forgive me if a guy who lives with death threats, and "human rights" complaints for "flagrant Islamophobia" with attendant legal bills, and tedious expenses like having to switch hotels at the last minute for security reasons, and US State Department and British Foreign Office advisories warning their nationals it's unsafe to go anywhere near my events, and even crappy restaurants deciding it's too dangerous to honor dinner reservations resents being told he's not puilling his weight and is "hampering attempts to stop the Islamization of the west".

'It Was Like Locusts': Parents Trample Kids, Steal Eggs During Easter Egg Hunt

An Easter egg hunt in Connecticut turned into a shoving match on Saturday, March 26th and ended with broken baskets and children in tears. In this case, it was the adults who could have used a "time out."

The field adjacent to the PEZ Visitor Center in Orange, Connecticut was the site of a holiday Easter egg hunt that was free and open to the public.

..."When it came time for like 10:30, the parents just bum-rushed that area," Nicole Welch said.

"So we started talking to folks and, 'hey, you know, this is supposed to start at a...directed time that we've posted. Let's wait. We'll give a whistle. We'll give the signal to start this.' And that lasted about a minute. And then folks just rushed the field and took everything," Shawn Peterson, PEZ general manager said.

"When my son left he had a broken basket and was hysterically crying," Welch said.

Peterson and his staff tried to regain control, but things quickly spiraled out of control.

"It was like locusts. Everybody just descended and then left," Peterson said.

CDR Salamander on an Unremarked Detail of the Brussels Attacks

Brussels, as the HQ of the EU and NATO is the premier target in Europe along with Paris and London, closely followed by Rome and Berlin. The backstory to the attack in question; this was an inside job. That is the nuance.

The attackers were not part of wave of million+ military aged males from radicalized Islamic nations that crashed over the borders of Europe in the last two years. No, these were native born Belgians, the end result of decades of wrongheaded national policies that had no historical record of success. Just the opposite, all of written history showed where polities being supported in Belgium would lead, but history was ignored in the arrogance of the now.

...The next question is; will the Belgian people hold their government accountable? Can they? As we outlined during the 2007 Belgian crisis, the entire nation can be held up by less than 25% of the nation's voters - specifically in this area by the Walloon Parti Socialiste. This sub-plot in the general European disaggregation in the face of waxing Islamism will only get worse.

NYT Columnist: It's Just a Giant Mystery Why People Become Terrorists

"After all this funding and this flurry of publications, with each new terrorist incident we realize that we are no closer to answering our original question about what leads people to turn to political violence," Marc Sageman, a psychologist and a longtime government consultant, wrote in the journal Terrorism and Political Violence in 2014. "The same worn-out questions are raised over and over again, and we still have no compelling answers."

Why The Government is Fighting The Little Sisters of the Poor: Control and Domination

It has nothing to do with providing contraceptives as even the government admits.

One of the most telling moments of oral argument came during General Verrilli's final two minutes, when Justice Alito highlighted a key government concession-that because some of the petitioners, including the Little Sisters, have a self-insured church plan, the government actually lacks authority under ERISA to make their third-party administrator provide contraceptive coverage. "In that situation," Justice Alito asked, "will the Little Sisters still be subject to fines for failing to comply?" General Verrilli's response was astonishing: "No, we don't think so." In other words, the government said it has no plans to actually enforce the mandate against the Little Sisters-and, by extension, any of the roughly 500 other religious organizations that have self-insured church plans. And even if the government coerced these organizations to sign its form, this would not make contraceptives flow.

This raises an obvious question: If the government has no plan to enforce the mandate against the Little Sisters, why has it been resisting their case for the last three years? Apparently, the government knows it would be senseless to fine the Little Sisters $70 million per year when the forced compliance would not make contraception coverage available anyway. Why did it wait until oral argument in the Supreme Court to make this crucial concession?

At a bare minimum, the concession establishes a complete lack of a compelling interest, or any interest at all, in forcing the petitioners with self-insured church plans to sign a form that will have no legal effect. More broadly, if Congress did not vest the agencies with authority to make the mandate work as to roughly 500 religious organizations, how compelling could its interest be with respect to the others?

Your Daily Hate Click: The Price of Union: The Undefeatable South

In order to become the richest and most powerful country in the world, the United States had to include the South, and its inclusion has always come at a price. The Constitution (with its three-fifths compromise and others) awkwardly registered the contradiction between its democratic rhetoric and the foundational presence of slavery in the thirteen original states. The 1803 Louisiana Purchase-by which the U.S. acquired more slaveholding territory in the name of national expansion-set off the dynamic that led to the Civil War. The United States has declined every opportunity to let the South go its own way; in return, the South has effectively awarded itself a big say in the nation's affairs.

The World's Most Prolific Twitter User Tweets Mostly About Nothing

As Twitter celebrates its 10th birthday today, @VENETHIS will send approximately his 37,771,000th tweet. He's by far the service's most prolific user, according to Twitter Counter, a statistics and analytics service powered by Twitter that tracks the accounts with the most tweets.

Many of the other top tweeters are bots or brands or both - a Venezuelan news curator, an astrological-data provider, a credit-card company pushing offers. @VENETHIS, though, appears to be a real person in Japan2 who today mainly uses the site to find partners and opponents for online games. He looks like any other tweeter, a member of an online subculture lacking in contextual clues for outsiders: He tweets a lot to his 43,000 followers about games such as Splatoon - things like seeking a tag-team match or crowing about a new weapon.

Apple Made Another 4-inch iPhone Because 'Some People Simply Love Smaller Phones'

At an even simpler level, there was still customer demand for a small phone, and Apple decided to respond to it. "Many, many customers have asked for this," Apple CEO Tim Cook says.

The iPhone has gone through quite a few size changes at this point, which has made things a bit awkward for Apple. The original 3.5-inch iPhone was the perfect size because your thumb could comfortably reach every spot on it. Then the 4-inch iPhone was the perfect size because, well, your thumb could still reach every point on it, even if it wasn't always comfortable. Then the 4.7-inch iPhone was - oh who even knows, Apple just announced a bigger phone and then an even bigger 5.5-inch one. There was no explaining it.

Count me in with these people. I've held on to my iPhone 5 because it fits nicely in my pocket and because I can text and reach any point on the screen one-handed, without having to adjust my grip. My wife's iPhone 6 is not nearly as ergonomic. So for me the new iPhone SE is the next model.

47 Expedition Journal, Day 29

The world is flat.  Conceptually, I know what a mountain is.  There is a definition, a word, sometimes in my dreams even an image.  But it is like the memory of a painting: cold, distant, an imperfect representation of an artist's mad dream.  I have forgotten what a mountain truly is.  Smithers has gone half-mad as we progressed, day after day, through the undulating grass.  barely rolling hills break the monotony, but they are not enough.

We found ourselves lost as we entered a part of the plains where the hills rose above the surrounding countryside.  There, amidst small gullies and draws, we were turned around and lost.  We spent nearly half a day retracing out steps before we found the right path.

The village nestled next to the river is a strange place.  We approached at dark, and were greeted with the lights of fires and the occasional villager.  The locals worship some strange demonic god that they call the Jayhawk.  I've only heard rumors of such a religion.  Despite my apprehension, a part of me longs to observe their rituals, only read about in books long hidden away in the back of libraries.  It is said that their warriors engage in ritualistic combat in honor of their gods, and if victorious the natives fill the streets in drunken revelry.  Couches are reportedly sacrificed to the holy pyres.

Tomorrow I begin the final leg of my journey.  I will leave Smithers behind; I fear that his fragile mind would not handle the horrors to come.  I will venture west into the lands referred to by the locals as Ri'leigh, "The Place of Dispair".  The suffered wails of the damned can be heard even this far out.  I've met a young warrior preparing his journey into that desolate place.  He was drinking a local spirit, and muttering a prayer against his cursed fate.  The language was unknown, but it sounded like two words, "Airborne Qualified".

I go with God.

83 So it appears that last Tuesday night's Atlas V launch sending a Cygnus cargo ship to the ISS came very close to failure. http://preview.tinyurl.com/jhyxj4h There was some sort of problem with the fuel/oxygen mixture in the first stage, and the engine shut down 5.4 seconds early when it ran out of liquid oxygen. This meant that the much smaller second stage engine had to burn about 80 seconds longer than planned to make up for the performance shortfall. The second stage shut down, the spacecraft separated, and a little while later the second stage reignited for an 11 second deorbit burn. It lasted only 3 seconds before running out of fuel. It did deorbit, but came down outside the target area. This means it was running on fumes when it shut down the first time to put Cygnus into orbit. It has been calculated that if the first stage had shut down one second before it did, the second stage would have been unable to achieve orbit.

106 "8 daily feminist activities for boys."

The SF Bay Area is absolutely full of that shit, with prog-parents giving the boys Barbie dolls and the girls Tonka bulldozers.

The kids quietly swap toys as soon as they can when their parents are away.

Sometimes when the parents keep giving them the toys they don't want, the toys get repurposed in politically incorrect ways. Barbie takes on COBRA in the hands of the boys, mowing down the evil hordes in fusillades of bullets. While the girls have the Tonka bulldozer busy excavating the foundations for her Dream House.

I don't want for a minute to discourage this. I foresee a bunch of these kids turning conservative at college just to annoy the parents who did so much to try to meddle with their childhoods.

157 This city is afraid of me. I have seen it's true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"... ...and I'll look down, and whisper "no." They had a choice, all of them. They could have followed in the footsteps of good men like my father, or President Truman. Decent men, who believed in a day's work for a day's pay. Instead the followed the droppings of lechers and Communists and didn't realize that the trail led over a precipice until it was too late. Don't tell me they didn't have a choice. Now the whole world stands on the brink, staring down into bloody hell, all those liberals and intellectuals and smooth-talkers... and all of a sudden, nobody can think of anything to say.

Parents were yelling at their kids to grab as much as they could, and they had no idea what it was we were giving away, they just knew "free shit". Worst part? 15 feet away from where we were set up, they would just drop the samples on the ground when they saw what it was. So, not only did we not give it out to as many different people as possible, about half would just drop the samples and then we had to go clean it up. Oh yeah, a few of the assholes decided that dropping it on the ground wasn't enough, they started throwing them back at the people handing them out.

260 Our local town Biloxi MS decided they would do an Easter egg drop in the stadium, using a helicopter. When my mom told me of the plan (she's the local news watcher, me, I mostly don't give a fug), I went off.

What a stupid idea. If children are present, well, helicopters don't always stay in the air; if they aren't present during the drop, what's the point?

(and as an aside, a couple days after this event a medi-copter went down in AL with all 4 aboard killed)

So they did the drop, kids WERE present (mom told me they wouldn't be), shit got blown all over the place, kids got scared, it was a fucking minor disaster. City officials say they won't be doing that one again.

Assholes. I swear to God, I thought city officials could fly.

"Listen, man-cub," said the Bear, and his voice rumbled like thunder on a hot night. "I have taught thee all the Law of the Jungle for all the peoples of the jungle--except the Monkey-Folk who live in the trees. They have no law. They are outcasts. They have no speech of their own, but use the stolen words which they overhear when they listen, and peep, and wait up above in the branches. Their way is not our way. They are without leaders. They have no remembrance. They boast and chatter and pretend that they are a great people about to do great affairs in the jungle, but the falling of a nut turns their minds to laughter and all is forgotten. We of the jungle have no dealings with them. We do not drink where the monkeys drink; we do not go where the monkeys go; we do not hunt where they hunt; we do not die where they die.

So, I'll be ready for a drink on Friday. Posted by: BC ------------- Once upon a time in my alcohol-centered younger days, I stopped in at one of my local haunts (this, by the way was a nightly activity) and ordered a beer from the bar tender. We knew each other by this time, in a barfly/bartender way. She put the beer down in front of me, and I looked at it for a second, and said "You know, I'm drinking this beer for the wrong reason...". She picked it back up, looked me in the eye and said, "Then don't drink it." I went home and thought about it. A lot. Alcohol can and does ruin lives. Anyone who has had an alcoholic in their family knows. This doesn't mean that I quit drinking, I just quit drinking compulsively.

Maybe (probably) they made some bad choices, but I know many many remarkable people who struggle with (and sometimes lose to) their addictions because they are strong, not weak.

295 287 BC, for children of alcoholics, from old studies, the rate of children of alcoholics becoming alcoholics is much higher than the general population's rate, even where the child was not raised by the birth parents. 301 Free will still reigns. You have to take that first drink. And the next. And the next. And the next. And you have to refuse to see yourself and realize there's a problem. Genetics didn't do that. You did.

Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at March 28, 2016 11:47 PM (GEICT)

Nailed it.  And that's why I don't believe in treating addiction like a disease.  It's a choice.  You didn't choose to infect yourself with a flu virus, or any other condition.  But you do choose to put something down the hatch, light up, or whatever else you might do.  That choice has consequences.  You can also choose not to, and that choice might also have consequences.  I'd know.

I'm an ex-smoker, and I used to justify my smoking with fatalism - that nobody in my family lives long enough for it to matter, and with depression - my life was pretty miserable and I didn't particularly want to live to see 80.  And then my life changed, 80 didn't sound so bad, and I wanted to stick around.  No more smokes and I'll try to defy genetics.

I'm also a reformed alcoholic.  I went through the binge drinking early twenties, to teetotal, to usually but not always having one cider after work.  It's a choice, every time.  That choice, either way, will have consequences.  But the important part is that it's a choice.  Addiction isn't something that just happens, and treating it like it is denies agency and responsibility.

oh I don't know.  I think that is overly cynical.  I don't like the disease-ification of everything either, but there are some really severe cases of addiction where the addict is just doing everything for the sake of getting high/drunk/stoned once again.  you really ought to watch the show Intervention some time.  there are some people there who are just entitled hipster types who get in over their heads, sure, but there are also some people there who are trying to cover up some unbearable pain in their past.  so their choices are either: (1) confront the awful abuse/torture/grief from their past, or (2) continue down the spiral towards eventual death from drugs.  it's not pretty either way.

370 Despite failing to find the time to attend the funerals of the likes of Justice Anton Scalia and Dame Margaret Thatcher, Barack Obama has managed to find the time to lead the US delegation at the opening of the largest mosque in the United States. As reported by Turkey's Yeni Safak newspaper and also in a separate video report update, both on Mar. 25, 2016, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and his American counterpart Barack Obama with both be present when the mosque officially opens for business later next week.

President Erdogan will be on US soil at part of a state visit from March 29 until April 2. There has been scant whispers of the American Chief Executive planning to meet with Erdogan at the Islamic facility, such as the April 20, 2015 report by Fox News. However, it was noted at the time that Obama had agreed to attend with Erdogan "in principle." It was also cited "If Obama's schedule allows at the time of the opening, he will accompany Erdogan."

383 There are a lot of things that are more complex than supposed. For instance, there is a species of parasite that lives half its life-cycle in terrestrial isopods ("pill-bugs" or "sow-bugs")....and the other half in birds. Can't live a full-life without some of each. Now it's pretty easy to go from bird to isopod -- birds crap all over the place, including where isopods feed.....so eggs in the bird crap are easy-peasy. But how to get the larvae from the isopods into the birds? Turns out, infected isopods lose their fear of wandering around without cover, and of being in the light. The only evolutionary glosses left to be added to this would be a back rash in the shape of concentric circles, and some auditory emissions tweeting "bird food, bird food, bird food" from the isopod -- but evolution hasn't gotten that far......yet. But the poor little isopods probably say, "I have my lifestyle totally under control -- I can choose where to put my foot and where 23 others will follow, and I choose to investigate grazing opportunities in the middle of the sidewalk." Even though, y'know -- larvae ate their brains.

396 Deep down, people in Connecticut are mostly assholes.  That Easter Egg fiasco reminds me of a Gotye concert at Mohegan Sun I attended several years ago.

This was right after that one hit he had was getting play.  Everyone is acting pretty normal as the two warmup acts go through their sets, and while Gotye performed a couple of his other songs....

As soon has he launches into the hit song, every asshole in the building, i.e. about ten thousand of the fifteen or so thousand in attendance, whips out their phone and starts video recording-in most cases after migrating as close to the stage as possible.  As soon as the song is over, off go the phones, out of the arena goes half the crowd.  Gotye does the rest of his set, which was pretty extensive, and the encores-which were also pretty lengthy, to a mostly empty arena.  Only in Connecticut....

Started tailgating, pulling up beside me to make threatening gestures, pulling in front of me and slowing down. Serious hassling and I couldn't shake him. I had the family in the car and so it was concerning. I finally pulled off onto the shoulder and stopped. He stopped a ways in front of me. He got out of the car and started walking back. Instead of getting out and bumping chests, at the last possible moment, I just pulled our car back onto the road and took off at a good clip. I took the first exit and drove the back way home. Clean getaway. Like I said, I have no idea what the guy's provocation was, but a) I'm glad he didn't have any kind of weapon, and b) that kind of thing really leaves a bad taste in the mouth for the rest of the day. The person in front of you just had their's and won't do anything bad the rest of the day so suck it up and suck it in and remember all the times YOU screw up during the day while driving.

I've had only one incident on the Eisenhower in Chicago in the morning. I really got wound up and then realized how close I was coming to causing an accident with injuries and possible death so backed off and never had another like that since.

It comes from frustration and being frustrated while watching others get away with practically murder all the time.

I'm quite familiar with that area. It's filled with Italian social climbers from West Haven and Fair Haven (that's a neighborhood in New Haven) and East Haven.

They combine the aggressive anti social attitude of the 2nd generation immigrant with the sense of responsibility of petty criminals especially about anything concerning their children.

They have a very protective attitude to the point of being dangerous. And Orange county (used to be countryside) is filled with them because of all the new construction that was going on there in the '70's, 80's and probably the '90's. All the families that finally made it that were living in Italian enclaves around and in New Haven (and some from NYC) moved to Orange once they got some money.

I have nothing against Italians per se. I just know a lot of them from there and they most all have some nasty attitudes.

They have so much more to lose and they have the potential to wield life or death and they are aware of it at all times.

Some don't and get blase about it and they should have their carry licenses suspended (not taken away).

I say if they want to use a driver's license as an analogy for carrying a gun, then they should make it real easy and only fine those who violate the rules without injuring or killing anyone and they should make it easier to get your rights back.

But then that would be too logical. Something liberals are intrinsically unable to do.

People don't know how to handle kindness and are most times too shocked to say anything.

It makes me feel better so mission accomplished. If they say thanks or smile then that's just a bonus.

438 I mention the chickadee because they inspired me once when I was at a low point. I watched them bouncing around through the trees looking for anything to eat. They didn't have it so good but kept on keeping on and with a little song to let the others know where they were.

Made me realize that you must keep going no matter what because if you stop and give up then everyone loses. Especially yourself.

I don't hope anymore though. Hope is a killer. Hope makes you think things will get better and then it destroys you when it doesn't.

Better to have as a goal to just keep on regardless of what happens.

I'm basically a pessimist. That way I'm never disappointed and sometimes I get pleasantly surprised.

The reason there are so many power plants burning natural gas is that gas is the standby fuel.  There is a lot of CAPACITY but not so much production from gas.  Gas plants are started and stopped daily as your consumption changes.

That used to be an iron rule but now that gas is so much cheaper more actual PRODUCTION is shifting to gas.

Big coal plants and nukes are "base load" plants.  They like to run 100%, day and night.  They make a lot more production relative to capacity than gas plants have historically.

As someone who moved to Texas from Florida, I have to recommend Texas.  South Florida has become a Leftist social experiment, Central Florida has a rampant and toxic drug problem that's responsible for most of the "Florida Man" news stories.  While I was there, both areas had a problem where all of the job postings were fake, consisting of an employer wanting 5+ years of experience or certifications that can only be acquired on the job as preconditions for getting the job.  This was an excuse to be able to go "see, we can't find Americans to do the job, we have to import more labor!"

My mom and brother say it's not as bad as it used to be, but I have no desire to find out.  I'm doing better than I ever have in Texas.

I am sorry for being so unworthy of your threads in the past. - And the same goes for ace. I'm sorry for being a total jackass.

I just finished watching the film _Sling Blade_. And it really touched me again.
I guess I just need some kind of release. Something something something.

I saw the film when it came out in the late 90's. I was at UVa. I saw it on the Downtown Mall at the Jefferson - which I think is closed now.
It was a very powerful film for me then.
But somehow it means even more to me now.

It's one of the few perfect films in the world. I can't say.
Anyway, it was really good, and I just wish Mr. Thornton (or someone else) would make another movie that good - or even close to that good. (Not a sequel, of course.)
I don't know how end credit music could be that powerful, but somehow it is.

I've kind of lost interest in this question. Now that they've made it an existential issue (contra Obama) by carrying out mass slaughter, I say just kill these shit heads. We can figure out causes afterwards.

482 Back again. I went over to the storage locker place to deal with more stuff. I ended up notsorting as much as I intended but did get the small locker completely empty and whats left stuffed in with my mother's stuff in her much larger locker around the corner and down the aisle in the same building and floor. So much work remains to be done but as of tomorrow a notable monthly expense is ended.

One thing that was kind of a drag was realizing the three boxes full of vintage porn from the 70s and 80s had nowhere to go. I kept the half dozen Playboys with signed centerfolds but was at a loss to think who might want the rest. I was almost tempted to see if I could sneak into my long ago junior high and leave them in a place that was a sort of secret hangout for those ditching class but not leaving campus. It probably wouldn't get much appreciation from kids who've grown up with broadband. The more literate stuff, like the Playboys and Penthouses would make for an interesting history lesson, nekkid pictures aside.

490 "This isn't something we do very often now," he said. "It was more common in the old days, where young people gathered on the beach during the summer and drank heavily. But now and again we meet a group of Swedish teenagers that want to party." That's one upside to the demographic death spiral. Fewer people, fewer disorderly drunks. But these Swedes were a bit dim, even considering their intoxication. If they presented themselves as gropey jihadis, they would have been allowed to stay.

Shorted switch or wire. Since it was abrupt, I'd say a switch somewhere (another safety switch perhaps) has shorted to ground.

That doesn't happen often, they usually short out open but they can under certain conditions short out to ground. Or a motor winding or timer switch has shorted out.

Got a volt ohmmeter? you can most likely trace the circuit. Start by removing wires to isolate the fuse so you can find out what branch of wiring is connected to the short. then find out what is grounded or shorted in the case of motor windings.

You still may have to call a tech in to fix it but you can eliminate a lot of time by tracing it yourself.

Good luck.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at March 28, 2016 11:26 PM (Xo1Rt)

492 Some safety switches are actually set up to blow a fuse if the power is turned on while they're closed. Say if a housing or panel is protected this way due to the danger to anyone starting the machine while the housing or panel is removed.

Usually there's a wiring diagram somewhere on the machine or with the installation brochure when it was purchased. Or you can get the manuals online with the manufacturers name, model and serial number.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at March 28, 2016 11:29 PM (Xo1Rt)

Philip K. Dick wrote a story in reaction to Roe v. Wade called 'The Pre-persons' in which abortion was legal up to the age where a child was considered fully sentient. This was regarded as the point at which basic algebra could be mastered, typically around the age of twelve years. This, of course, meant low IQ offspring were fair game until they were no longer minors. (I don't recall the story delving into whether they were more likely to receive capital punishment as adults.)
