Overnight Open Thread (29 Aug 2014) - Under The Influence Edition
— CDR M

Evenin' morons. I'm back with this abbreviated ONT. I blame the pain killers. Fake threat vs real threat

Probably explains why we have no plan for ISIS. Democrats are more afraid of global warming than ISIS. (Warning: Autoplay video).

Orchestral Funk

Culinary Stuff

Deep fried tequila shots anyone?

Flying Video

Mack Bolan

This could be pretty cool, especially if they make it take place during the same time as the books. Bradley Cooper to star in Mack Bolan movie.

Dog Video

Bonus: Angry dogs wearing costumes.

3 Evening folks. CDR M, I did the fried tequila shots last week. Not bad at all. I soaked em pretty good, ate about a half dozen....was the equivalent of a shot or two of tequila in drunkenness.

120 There has never been a greater opportunity for self-published musicians to release material than now. Any talented artist that signs exclusively to a major label is destroying their potential reach and revenue. The payola and Label dominant music biz is dead, dead, dead, Zed. Posted by: weft cut-loop at August 29, 2014 10:13 PM (kAPuS) True. Before you were limited to what the D/J.'s were told to play, what MTV bothered to play, or what the music magazines told you about. There were exceptions (KROQ and KNAC in SoCal; Headbanger's Ball, &c.). The best way to find new music is actually going through the youtube links. Found many a great band that way. Many of them can get their music out without having to bother with record labels as well. One of the bands I found was Space Goat: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5D8477303A4F3338 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhvXKio2k9I

Husband came to door without pants after about 5 minutes and I launched into a serious tirade about how it was the last firiday and they knew I was coming and I had tried to call and they ignored it....blah blah blah... He looks at me and says, I guess you haven't heard, my wife passed away 9 days ago. I have never been so embarrassed my whole life. Or uncomfortable. Criminy. I had a huge bottle of Darvon round here. (Darvocet minus acetaminophen.)

Tossed it in the med recycling bin at the police department.

In my particular individual biology, it produced nothing at all for pain relief. Zip, zero, nada.

It also caused me absolutely no health troubles at all.

This business with the nosey overbearing FDA has been getting steadily worse over the decades and it needs to be reeled in, sharply. I am happy to listen if the government tells me they advise against my taking a particular med, and I'll even sign a release form if they insist.

But at the end of the day, it's MY OWN GODDAMN PHYSICAL PERSON and I'm the one in charge of it, not some bureaucratic Beltway buttmunch.

His later "Tiger Mann" stuff was a little less compelling, I thought. Also read some contrived detective series about a PI named Donald (IIRC) who had a bulldyke partner who said "well fry me for an oyster" or some such a lot. I soldiered through because WestPac. John D. MacDonald wrote a number of novels that weren't Travis McGee, and they are very good. His single collection of short stories, Seven, is excellent, but surprisingly depressing if you come to it having read only his Travis McGee novels. Other novels I read back then were Earl Thompson's Garden of Sand and the sequel Tattoo, both very good and very different, even though they follow the life on the same protagonist.

A lot of MDs are really paranoid about "overprescribing", because of the fear that if they write one too many scripts for big-gun opiate drugs, even for obvious cases like cancer, they'll be investigated and possibly lose their licenses.

Yesterday, granddaughter shot a 200lb sow bear.  Today, daughter shot another sow that went 235lb.

558 A lot of MDs are really paranoid about "overprescribing", because of the fear that if they write one too many scripts for big-gun opiate drugs, even for obvious cases like cancer, they'll be investigated and possibly lose their licenses.

I think this is the answer to a lot of the drug prescription problem when it comes to people in real need.  An a$$hole Federal bureaucrat with no responsibility checking medical records and persecuting the doctors, just what the patients need. Plus, it is a precursor to Obama-care rules and regulations where "due process" will never see the light of day.

The Costner movie they made of it is a very good western, but the book itself is poorly plotted and shabbily executed. It reads like someone's description of a western novel their uncle told them about one time when they were a kid. Fun Fact: Lauran Paine wrote more than 1000 books. A fucking thousand. 682 I like to believe all computer programs were designed, at least in the concept phase, by a mad 12th Century monk who had himself mured up in a hogshead and only communicates through the bung.
Once the original concept is agreed upon, the initial design-work is done by an office full of mindless drones randomly thrown into tiger teams for morale reasons, reminiscent of Bridge Over the River Kwai, and allowed to communicate only by email and by throwing post-it notes over the walls of their beige and grey Herman Miller cubical walls: all the while being flogged into greater action by a highly paid management group made up of ex-porn producers who last had a profitable project in the late 80's.
Debugging is done by a crew of 13-28 year old aderall addicts who have no real-life experience, and are aided by the one person who does documentation for the entire division who was hired on the basis of actually knowing how pivot tables work.

I could be wrong.

State Motto: Dirigo - "I lead"

The State flag features two figures: Agriculture (Farmer with scythe), and Commerce (Merchant Marine Sailor)

Both figures allude to the fact that Maine built ships that sailed to China and back, before most other states were created.

But it wasn't the real Breaking Bad, But apparently HBO sold the rights to the show and they have an all Latino cast and do the show word for word, scene for scene but in spanish. I'm guessing something obstructed the vents. Anyway, my instinct was to flip the breaker, open up everything to defrost, and salvage what food I could. If I let this fully defrost, will the compressor likely be OK?

We have a Samsung that has a similar design flaw.

They screwed up designing the auto defrost.. frost builds up around the fans and they stop working.  Have you noticed a ticking or loud fan noise lately?

Anyway.. you have to completely empty fridge/freezer and leave it open for at least 24 hrs.  You may get some water on the floor.  Then, it should start back up fine.

We just went thru the second cycle of this with ours.. major PITA.

849 Lynn Dudley, senior vice president at the American Benefits Council, which advocates for businesses, says pensions are difficult to maintain because of frequent regulatory changes and the rising premiums that employers pay to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. (PBGC) to insure their plans. "The environment has gotten hostile," says Dudley."What companies are trying to do is reduce their exposure to risk, from things like market volatility and changes in the law," says Deborah Chalfie, senior legislative representative for AARP. "It's not really de-risking. It's transferring the risk." This transfer began in earnest in 2012 when changes to pension law fully kicked in, making it more attractive for employers to offer lump sums, she says. A rash of companies made cash offers that year, including Ford Motor Co., J.C. Penney, Lockheed Martin Corp. and Archer-Daniels-Midland Corp. ... it also makes sense for companies to shed this liabilities before the fed-enabled stock market drops thru the floor because these companies will have to make up any future short fall.

Out in the boonies southwest (I think) of Nacogdoches, off a very narrow county road about 2 miles (I think, again) from the main road, the number of which I can't remember.  Sorry for the uncertainty, but I'm still a bit spaced out from a 3 day, 1400 mile trip with a cat, doy, and U-Haul.

Poor Mr. Empire is pretty tired himself, since I've never towed a trailer and he didn't think this would be a good time to start.
