Hold on to your butts morons, even though tomorrow is the first day of March, old man Winter is bringin' some more stormage. SoCal is getting a soaking and possibly a Sharknado. And there are indications of another storm that may have a surprise for the southeast/mid-Atlantic by the end of next week.

Tax Tips

It is tax season so do you know 14 red flags that will get you audited (besides being a registered Republican).

Maps Galore

Oh my. 25 maps and charts that explain America today.

Most Quoted Movies

So what movie do you think is the most quoted? Make a guess in the comments and then find out here.

Heavy Metal From Botswanna

Pretty cool to hear that metal is rising in Africa. Kalahari metalheads pursue a dream.

Oscar Swag Bags

Do they pay taxes on these $80,000 swag bags?

State Sponsored Nannyism

Government doing what government does best. OH Democrat seeks fines for people who idle their car too long. I assume that cops will be exempt.

If temperatures exceed 20 degrees Fahrenheit, residents can run their cars just five minutes in a one-hour period, according to House Bill 458. If it’s 20 degrees or lower, people get an extra five minutes.

Exceed that allotted time, by even a second, and you could be charged with a minor misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $150 – and court costs.

Repeatedly commit the “crime” and your violation escalates to a fourth-degree misdemeanor, a maximum fine of $250 and up to 30 days in jail.

Food Stuff

7 foods for better sex. A steak dinner probably works too. And a sandwich after.

Not the recipient. The donor can give up to $14k per year to a recipient, with a lifetime max of a million or so, after which the donor owes gift taxes.

So for sure that $80k price tag becomes $8k.

111 Nascar Mexico race in Phoenix tonight live stream http://msnlatino.telemundo.com/deportes/extra/live_stream/en_vivo Ruben Garcia, Jr was the rookie of the year last year in Nascar Mexico. This year he get to make his first Nationwide race at Phoenix. He's only 18. Daniel Suarez is another young Mexican driver trying to make the jump to the bigger US national series. Nascar is determined to find a young Mexican driver they can market like hell and there's a huge competition to be that guy. This is only the 2nd year that the Mexico series comes to Phoenix to race. It's a big race for these guys cause they all are trying to move up to the US-based series, especially the young guys. More money, more fame. They all know what Nascar is looking for -- a young, good-looking Mexican dude who drives fast and is bilingual and can work Spanish and English media. So when they come to Phoenix it's also a chance for them to sell themselves to the big team owners and sponsor people and all that. It''s just a reality of how modern motorsports work. And the rest of the season is in Mexico, so a weekend like this, where both the top Sprint Cup series and Nascar Mexico are at Phoenix on the same weekend, is a huge networking opportunity for all the Mexican drivers to try and make a name for themselves. Nascar has had tough times in US in recent years, but has really grown a lot in Mexico -- mostly thanks to Nascar Mexico, now in it's 10th year. Smart long term investment in their sport.

222 I heard the other day that Hillary can't run for president because Bill gave her the clap that he got from a teenage hooker in Mena. For decades people have assumed that Hillary was an energetic "go gettter" who thought and worked on her feet. What I was told though is that her hoo haw looks like a catchers mitt crossed with a baboon's backside. Every time she sits down the critters start itching and crawling all over and the constant oozing from dozens of open sores leaves embarrassing stains on the upolstry since the crusty seepage from the last bought tends to crack when the folds of her scaly vagina contract while sitting down. I was told she decided to step down from sec.of state after a particularly embarrassing incident involving a valued throw blanket from Karsi's mother's dowry and three pekinese lap dogs that tried to clean up the festering mess.

Or something like that. 3 days, you pick one park per day (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom or Hollywood Studios) for $125 and you can add a 4th day for an extra $20. Yeah, we're staying on site. My dad insisted we stay at the Contemporary since the freaking monorail runs through the thing. He's got a bad hip and that makes it convenient for him.

I've seen the Godfather movies a bunch of times and the scene that always, always gets me is the one where young Vito arrives at NY Harbor and all the raggedy-assed immigrants gather at the deck to stare at the Statue of Liberty. Gave up flying some years back, just not willing to put up with the nonsense. What can I say, you all know the drill. Goodish pile of ham radio gear in there too. But the point I was getting at was, all those prepacks include a 1/2 pint of something-or-other in case of dry county or suchlike. All first-aid kits have a 1/2 pint of everclear (or as I like to call it; campbells condensed vodka). -

582 Oh they are shaking in their boots [with laughter] in Moscow tonight. Can't somebody show up to work at the White House and tell this Jello-spined juggalo that his warning and threats just aren't making it? I mean really. This tough guy spiel is just an embarrassment: "The Obama administration is evaluating whether President Barack Obama will go forward with plans to attend an international summit in Russia this summer amid reports of Russian intervention in Ukraine. A senior administration official says it's hard to see how Obama and European leaders would attend the G-8 summit in Sochi, which is scheduled for June. " So let me get this straight. The "penalty" for Russia if it keeps its hold on the Ukraine is that it doesn't get to waste precious summer days in June in the presence of this cowardly little narcissist and his entourage of fluffers and fellators? Well, yes, that would certainly make any leader of Russia give up the security of his fleet's access to the Crimea, the Black Sea, and from there into the Mediterranean. Let's not forget that Russia lost the Crimean War in the middle of the 19th Century [not that long ago in the Russian mind] which took about half a million lives on all sides. In that war, most of the fighting took place for control of the Black Sea, with land battles on the Crimean peninsula in southern Russia. Deja vu all over again? Why not? That's the history of Russia writ large. http://americandigest.org/mt-archives/5minute_arguments/oh_yeah_you_and_what_army.php

My dream diplomatic development:

Putin, fresh off his easy victory in Ukraine, has the inspired idea of a bombshell overture to Japan - return of two of the Kurile islands, occupied since WWII.  Japan, already showing understandable signs of resentment and low confidence in the US, welcomes the gesture ...... and this breakthrough leads to serious talks among Japan, Russia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and India about mutual security cooperation (i.e., "CHINA!!!!!").

OK, let a guy dream.  Japan IS about fed up with us, for good reason.  A few more idiotic faux pas by our bimbo celebrity ambassador to Tokyo (itself an unprecedented slap in the face and signal of an unserious attitude) might help, too.

"We estimate our losses at 10, 20 million tops"

"General Turgidson, do you realize what you're saying? That's mass murder"

"Well I didn't say we wouldn't get our hair mussed"

(paraphrased a bit, but surely a candidate in our movie quote thing)

634 A partial quote, but not from a movie we can turn off. on Obama and Ukraine, emphasis added: "It occurred to me they might have gotten the idea from Obama himself who has a way of selling different buyers the same bridge in Brooklyn. He did it to the Saudis. He's pulling the same stunt in Iran. He's the king of selling pet rocks and empty boxes. But what happens when people go home and find nothing but sawdust inside? "Well there's bound to be trouble. And here he is again, rambling on in his vague way. Raising hopes with the Ukranians and probably secretly selling them out to the Russians while reassuring old Angela and David in Europe that they can go on as Soros had planned. "Kick the can down the road and edge toward the door so when they open the empty box, you'll be halfway to the corridor. That's the story of his life, the secret of his shabby success. Obama's problem is that he can't deal from the top of the deck if his life depended on it. He's a compulsive liar. That got him to the top of the political heap. But now it is also getting him into trouble... Link in sig.

That is interesting.  I remember a few years ago that the Indian air force considered buying F-16s or F-18s but they decided that although they liked the airplanes and even though the US would help them set up facilities to assemble them in India, the politics of the US is too chancy and they might have some asshole in the White House who would refuse to sell them spares just when they needed them so the went with the Russians again.

My personal take is that if they had gone with the F-16 they could have gotten spares from Israel or Venezuela or Holland or somewhere but whatever.  I thought we should have sweetened the deal for F-18s by offering them the Kittyhawk and as many F-4s as they wanted from the bone yard at Davis-Monthan.

I hear Obama will challenge Putin to a Game of Thrones trivia contest.

I heard it was "Words with Friends'.

Just catching Kerry's comments from Wednesday on McGlaughlin.  What a chimp.  He said something like: "We're hoping that Russia will not see this as ah fuh (Sic) sort of continuation of the cold war.  We don't see it that way.  We do not believe this should be an East/ West Russia/United States this is not Rocky IV believe me".

He is so sexy when he says big word likes "territorial integrity" or makes a cultural reference like Rocky IV.  For "territorial integrity" he tossed his head to the side and smiled like he was expecting praise from his homeroom teacher.  At the end of the stated quote he put on his "I so seriouse suys" face and bobbed his head on "believe me". Jesus Christ on a cracker this is our leadership?

- - - - - - - - - - (stupid unbroken text rule) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

From Merriam Websters:
Fascism:
a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

I am becoming more and more convinced that Putin is in fact a Fascist.  It's obvious really.  Read the definition of what a Fascist (with a capital F) is.  Do you see any points of divergence with the stated intent or the actions of Putin over the past 2 decades?  I don't.  He at least payed lip service to protecting Russians in Georgia and now in the Ukraine he's issuing Russian passports to anyone who speaks Russian.  I'm sure various assets sweeten the pot a bit but when he sits down with his top men I bet they talk about " Народ, область, лидер"

The problem with Fascists is that they remind me of junkies.  I don't know if you've heard the saying "A drunk steals your wallet and runs away but a junky steals your wallet and then volunteers to help you look for it."  Junkies and Fascists (and many others) have their own moralities based around their own gods.  A junky's god is heroin and a Fascist's god is his own race.  All other morality has no bearing in their world.  Obama and Kerry can try to talk tom him.  Face to face Putin might even let them scold him.  He doesn't care.  Putin knows that Obama and Kerry's words are empty and that they'll take him back so he'll voluntarily engage in more "honest and open dialog" over a crisis he both created and has already won.  He's not going to give back Barry's wallet but he'll pretend to look for it; but he's already thinking about ways to swipe the next one.

779 So, apropos of nothing, I got really tired of digging through the drawer full of sockets for my socket wrenches whenever I attempted something, got some $1 organizer widgets from Harbor Freight, and sorted those bad boys out.

....and I noticed something very peculiar.

So, let's just start SAE 3/8" drive.....You'd expect 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 -- right? It just makes sense.

You might expect 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/5, 3/4, 7/8....that's pretty logical.

Knowing how socket sets get padded, you could even believe (1/4" drive) 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4 -- but they also dropped 7/32, 9/32, and 11/32 on me. In 12-point sockets, no less, so there's not really room for approximation.

I'm suspecting that there's some weird "high pressure Nitrogen line" standard that requires a 9/32 socket, so random idiots have trouble opening it. I have no idea what it is, though. Does anyone know what field(s) of endeavor requires socket wrenches denominated in 1/32"?

Yeah, I suspect that they're "real" (my set is Craftsman) -- the question is, real for what?

There are a lot of standards set up at odd sizes so that it's difficult to screw things up. For example, a dishwasher air gap has a 5/8" connection to the dishwasher and a 7/8" to the garbage disposal, so it takes real talent to install it backwards -- although I'm sure it would work fine 3/4" in-and-out.

Similarly, SCUBA regulators use 3/8" (24 thread) ports for low-pressure outlets (about 140 psi) and 7/16" (24 thread) ports for high-pressure (tank pressure....typically 3000 psi). As you can imagine, it is bad for equipment and people to plug things into the wrong ports.

So, I'm wondering -- what safety bit involves 7/32"? 9/32"? 11/32"?

We finally got are getting some rain this winter, but we'll have to see how it plays out. There is a reservoir where the BH and I go hiking, and a section of the path runs along the bank with about a 6' drop to the waterline.....and currently, no lie, it's more like 60'. It's more like a puddle than a lake.

The last seriously nasty drought in California was in something like 1977....and the population of the state has doubled since then while all the infrastructure investments were diverted to light rail and carpool lanes and maintenance was robbed to benefit Dem cronies. You can hug as many trees and sasquatches as your little proggie heart desires, but stuff gets real very quickly on a water ration of 3 gal/day.

Bottom line, they were caught flatfooted and their answer at the time was ro go back to 1800s law and try to move the state borders to include a new mile of the Tennessee river. Worthless azzholes....

LA goes insane every time it gets a sprinkle, anyway. They have freakin' ice-storms in Cleveland on a regular basis and manage to deal with it, but any time there's enough mist on LA freeways to lift the oil drips into contact with tires, people totally go nuts. Not that I'm unaware of my own limitations, mind you.

Posted by: cthulhu at February 28, 2014 10:52 PM (T1005)

811 And that last major CA drought was exacerbated by politicians deciding to shut down and stop maintaining part of the reservoir system because the period from the late 60s onward had been unusually wet and apparently voters have the memory span of goldfish. Then we had two incredibly rainy years in '78 and '79. The hill behind my aunt's house in Benedict Canyon collapsed and came down. Filled a big swimming pool and kept coming. By the time I first saw it the mud was still waist deep around the front door. This was a pretty big house but it was a pretty big hill. A hill that had been bare when they first moved there but had a row of houses along the top by 1978.

And you put me the other half. Standard screws like "4-40", "6-32", and "10-24" are based on wire gauge and threads per inch -- and, of course, wire gauge (AWG) would result in odd-size nuts and bolts.

838 There's always something to be grateful for -- in my case, it's that I don't live next to a major city or a nuclear weapon site. Because with That Fucking Guy in charge, there's liable to be ICBMs in the air any day now.

He's just that good. At last, Sanger and Sunstein will be happy about world population reduction.

Null, why were you exploring the wonders of the American health care system?

839 Damn. I need to be up in 4 hours to play in a golf tournament. Weep for me, as the expected high is only 68.

840 Still not one single tear for me.

I'm seeing how this is going to go down, and its barrel ugly.

844 I've got some tears for you.

You can lick them off my balls where they slid to.

But you go ahead and make fun cause when summer comes around and it's 128° F in the shade and your face has melted into your soup, we'll all be nice and cozy at 78° F or so.

No, we rarely exceed 95F during the summer; then again we rarely go under that temp either. At least it's a wet heat.

Oh wait....I hibernate during those 3 months.

848 What a day ahead. Wife just left for the in-laws, back on Monday. I have to go to the horse farm right now, come back in time to move some yard crap out of the way so the roofers can put a new roof on, wait for roofers to arrive, deal with them, and then hopefully wriggle out of here in time to go crosstown to watch BC play at Wake Forest at 4, then back to the horse farm before 7.

849 Thoughts which drive me from my bed, Mar 1: My older sister's birthday was early Feb. All month I meant to write to her. All month I didn't. Thought about writing her that our childhood house is up for sale. There's pix on the real estate website. A nice picture of her old room, where I would sneak in and listen to her 45s. A picture of the bedroom I shared with my brother before little sister was born. You could see right into the bathroom to the old green freestanding sink where I used to brush my teeth. Divorce changed everything, and along with the rest of the destruction of the family, that house got sold. Repercussions of family tragedy rippled right through to my own family and kids, as well as my sibs and their kids, and their and my kids' relationships and families. The visitation of the sins of the fathers upon subsequent generations is not some mystic punishment; like gravity's punishment for not seeing the edge of the cliff, it's intrinsic to the dynamics of reality. When I think of little me in that bedroom, mom reading bedtime stories, many decades ago, I am deeply sorrowful. The thought of brushing my teeth at that sink makes me nostalgic as a physical punch in the gut, in ways photos & old home movies don't do. Whatever Is is, I accept Fate; but I still mourn for that family and its unrealized potentials. Drove me from my bed. And how are you, this morning? Nood up yet?

850 Reuters,
"Ukraine's prime minister said on Saturday his country would not be drawn into a military conflict by Russian "provocations" in the Crimea region. . ."

Well, it is the best policy when armored vehicles and infantry appear on your city streets to ignore them, and tweet out a protest on how 'unacceptable' it is.

It's not like you're going to war because someone parked a tank in the middle of a street intersection. Who would do that?

852 I just expect if I write a long one, a new thread pops up. But it's Saturday. The rules are different. § Putin three on two, Russia into the Ukraine. Take a Risk card.

853 " I just expect if I write a long one, a new thread pops up. But it's Saturday."

Usually like clockwork.

Except for Saturdays.
And sometimes Sundays.
And occasionally holidays.

Unless Willow posts something.
Then *Bam*, new thread.

854 There is an ad here for a Yoshimura Power Package RM-Z, with a picture of something that might be a battery-powered tentacle. I have no idea what I'm looking at.

860 Thank you, Molly k. Don't know that song, but that house really did shape us. It was almost a member of the family. The earlist memory I can dredge up is standing in our driveway, looking up at the place, thinking, this is my home. Milady likes lookie-looing at real estate, and mentioned she'd like to tour it, after decades of hearing me talk about it. Don't think I could stand it. I did take the kids to the front door one year trick-or-treating. A glance through to the front hall was almost overwhelming. No do-overs, no reset, in real life. Ooo, look! Incipient sunrise!

861 Loved that vintage ad.  It's so amusing to look at old ads from days gone by and wonder why anyone thought they were a good idea.  Let alone the products.  Lysol?! for feminine hygiene.  Um, no.  I have a small collection of old turn of the century housekeeping books.  They are hysterical.  One of my fondest memories of my late mother is when we sat on the edge of the bed one day and read from them...laughing so hard we actually had tears running down our faces.
