Overnight Open Thread (28 Dec 2013)
— CDR M

This is a good question. When will insurers ever say enough's enough? As it stands, I have little sympathy towards insurers. They willingly got in bed with this administration on this.

How can anyone run a business this way? This is worse than being a federal agency. No federal agency would be expected to stop and start on a personal whim like this. These aren’t rules, they aren’t regulations, they are dictates based on nothing more than Kathleen Sebelius’ momentary feelings.

These are only the “glitches” that have been made public. God knows what orders and threats are being issued in closed-door meetings.

How long will the insurance industry abide being treated like shoe shine boys?

Shoes

Alright 'ettes, here's my penance for the spider video last night. Crazy high heel designs.
h/t mpfs

Flower Ammo

A 12 gauge shotgun shell that lets you fire flower seeds with a shotgun. Um, yeah, OK. 4 shells for $50??? Must have marijuana seed in it. Jeez.

Naval Aviation

Marine Corps Standards

Suhprise, suhprise. OK not really. US Marine Corps has quietly pushed back a deadline that requires all female Marines to do three (yes three!) pullups. I'm sorry, but if one cannot do three pullups, then perhaps seeking employment in something combat related should not be considered.

Famous Movie Scenes...

...done with animals.

Obama vs Israel

Jeez. Now the administration is telling Israeli generals to stop being so concerned about Israeli security concerns. Umm, that's their job and is essential to their survival and existence.

Global Warmists Trapped

Australian ice-breaker closes in on trapped global warmist ship as Chinese ice-breaker retreats to open ocean. Guess they should've consulted actual weather reports and not AGW models to plan their route.

Aurora captain Murray Doyle said it was always possible the ice would be too thick for the Xue Long.

''We were always option B,'' he said. ''We were always going to be sent on until the end.''

Reports from the Chinese ice-breaker and the Akademik Shokalskiy say pack ice in the area is 10/10ths, which means the vessel is surrounded, and some ice floes are between three and four metres thick.

The Aurora could comfortably slice through ice up to 1.35 metres thick, and crash through thicker slabs by reversing and ramming.

But Mr Doyle was unsure how the ice-breaker would handle ice thicker than three metres. ''It's not what we're built for,'' he said.

Did You Know....

....that this administration believes it has cut the deficit in half since 2009? Just wow.

63 They fully expect to be reimbursed by the Gov't. It's the reason they went along in the first place.

It's why they tried to make the law unrepealable because it would ruin so many insurers if it was.

This is nothing more than the largest transfer of wealth from the citizens to a few companies and their controllers.

That's the way Hillarycare was written and that's what happened here.

It should be called the Health Insurers Retirement fund.

89 Do you know why Insurance Companies A, B, and C went onboard with obamacare? So Government would grind Ins Companies D, E, and F into dust, thus eliminating competition and increasing their market share. Nevermind that it is obvious that A, B, and C are next on the chopping block, the important thing is that for a while those Execs will rake in big $$. And the only thing that matters to these Fools is the here and now. Theyll let others worry about the future as they sip umbrella drinks on the beach.

122 You know, I get not feeling sorry for insurance companies, really I do. I've been saying for years that they were being played for suckers with the temptation of new mandated customers. I said all along that they would regret playing ball with JEF, and I have watched thousands of smart, dedicated people devote literally millions of man hours and hundreds of millions of dollars trying to comply with Obamacide, retain some shred of profit and still offer coverage to their clients. It's been a huge, monumental waste of time and effort. However, there is one thing I think everybody chuckling over their misfortune now that they're trapped in the maw of this monstrosity, and that's this: Rent seeking is a logical, free market response to government over-regulation. So, you're an insurance company. The Obama mob comes to you with the carrot of requiring everyone to buy your product. That's nice, that's attractive, but what everybody forgets, everybody, is that behind all of that was the mailed fist of government with the stick: "cooperate or we'll regulate you out of business". What do you do? Do you defy them? Ethically we'd all like to say of course, but that's a monumental risk for a company or an industry to take, with very low probability of success. So, ha ha, stupid insurance companies tried to rent seek and now they're getting screwed. Yup. That's true. JJ Sefton was gloating about this the other morning, and panzershorn plays it like a one note band. They're not wrong, but the real and true problem is a government so massive, so intrusive, so overreaching that insurance companies really had no options but to go along. What do you do if your options are to rent seek or fold? Hobson's choice.

161 GGE, some companies did that. One I know of stopped offering health insurance and is making a killing selling supplemental insurance products that pay for the stuff Obamacide doesn't cover. Going Galt is fine for an individual, but for the really big players it isn't possible. United Health Care insures 1 in 5 Americans one way or another and employees 70K people, it's a multi-billion dollar corporation. It's simply not possible to shut that down or change lines on a whim. Aside from all that, do you think the government would have even let them? I don't and I know they were told as much, if not in so many words.

166 As I understand it, Obamacare has subsidies/bail outs dialed in for the insurers. In other words, tax dollars. Posted by: Mike Hammer The applicable term from the Obama Regime is "risk corridors". For the short term, they will guarantee their profitability. So no matter what, the co-operative ones will still make money. At some future time, the HHS Secretary will collapse those "risk corridors", and the insurance companies will go belly up. Much financial dislocation, etc. and then Government Single Payer. The continuing theme of Obama and the rest of his Party of Looters is destruction of capital. They did it with the "cash for clunkers", and with EPA regulations shutting down coal-fired power plants, and will continue to do so. Because wrecking stuff is their way of tearing down the America that works, and replacing it with the America of dependency, that can be ruled by Executive Fiat.

174 I believe that as in NY, the CT'rs have already got their weapons on record so it's just a matter of sending out letters to those who don't comply.

And, Yeah, the canoe stories are cute and all but for real, you'll have to provide some sort of evidence and in some places if you didn't file a report at the time of loss, they can stick you for that.

They ain't gonna buy the lost overboard stories.

If you claim you sold them all, you're required, required mind you to tell them who what when where you sold them. ON PENALTY OF LAW.

Meanwhile you're house and environs will be subject to search warrant and seizure of any "contraband" with arrest likely.

So good luck with having acted as a good citizen all these years.

Just hang a sign on yourself that says: "DUMBASS".

It has its upsides. 3 and 4 day work weeks mean 4 and 3 day weekends. 'Course, I haven't worked a 3 day work week in a while, we're on mandatory overtime so they've all been 4 day work weeks for some time now. This week I'm only doing 3 cause I'm going on vacation. Still...3 day weekends every weekend? I can live with that. (Plus, I'm kind of used to the 12 hour workday, been doing it most of my adult life.)

Well my sympathy for the insurance companies can only be measured as a negative value, but let's throw in AARP for fun too. They didn't have to climb in bed with 404Care, and their 'mission' is to represent seniors. Except that 404 explicitly takes money from Medicare. Why the support? They figured they would get to sell a bunch of new Medigap policies out of the deal.

Moar rent seeking; in this case from a scrunt making over $400k per year as prezzy of AARP.

Insurance companies have long been in the pocket of gubmint. Let's take a quick look -- Flood insurance (required to get a mortgage, co. gets a piece for writing policy)

Auto insurance -- Mandatory to drive in many states. Includes uninsured motorists as mandatory coverage too.

Title insurance needed for mortgage.

Mortgage default insurance if you put less than 20% down.

I'm sure I can think of others if I think about it a bit.

189 122 You know, I get not feeling sorry for insurance companies, really I do.

What do you do if your options are to rent seek or fold? Hobson's choice. ---------------------------------------- Back when Hillary tried to force HillaryCare, the insurance companies fought back. They aired commercials showing consumers how bad HillaryCare would be for them. And it worked. HillaryCare blew up on the launching pad. So the insurance companies decided this time the time was right to get in bed with government. And they decided wrong.

Over the past oh, twenty five or thirty years, I've sold or traded uncounted dozens of firearms on nothing more than the cash or trade transaction, a handshake and a smile.

This is by God TEXAS, and that's all the law requires.  No federal bastard is going to get any more records out of me than that, and IF that.

The only records of those transactions are the satisfaction in my heart, that each and every one of 'em absolutely fcuks the federal paper trail, whether the transaction was inbound our outbound.

Frankly, I have nearly no idea what I have or don't have, anymore.  So many exchanges, I may have nearly sold 'em all, just to pay for Christmas.

No heavy ammo that could get wet and become useless.

My comment @189 relates to just such an impossible box....and the answer, however cruel, is to allow monumental miscarriages of justice to occur....because only then will the even more heinous builders-of-boxes begin to see justice.

And, were I in the insurance biz, I'd want my company to be structured in such a manner that I could "go virtual" on regulators, cronies, and looters. It'd never be perfect, it'd never be a job completely done, but all those folks who got shafted out of their plans by Obamacare and saw their premiums double would be happy campers if a company with the same reputation that was headquartered in Singapore could offer them the plan they used to have.

Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with a good air rifle and they are certainly an alternative to gunpowder powered firearms in certain situations (cities, etc). I was just surprised by their cost is all. But, as Mike Hammer pointed out, there's just as much machining involved if you have a rifled barrel, and for the higher powered ones, match grades and such, I'm sure the steel has to be a similar quality as well. Not much like the old brass tube Daisys at all I'm guessing.

The better airguns are VERY high quality. I had a BSA .22 stolen from me a few years ago. I would put it up against my Marlin model 60 for accuracy and quality. The key is pellets - you can get wadcutter, hollowpoint, etc

Depends on the Vo, and there's college a la carte....if he's looking to be a machinist, there is all sorts of potential for him; if he's looking at legal transcription, not so much.

I'm an odd sort, in that I was probably "better educated" in a broad sense going into college than were most of the people that I graduated with coming out. Besides my major, I mostly took courses about things I knew about anyway to rack up credits....which is how I managed to graduate in 3-1/2 years when many in my major were taking 5. But it is important to have a classical education. Think of how rich this place is, and how much the right kind of education allows us all to bridge the gaps, so that we can take lessons from the ploughmen of the fields and apply them to the bricklayers, how the military has so many lessons among the peaceful....a classical education (not the current propaganda camps) aids immensely in putting things into a variety of perspectives and situations.

So I would very much encourage you to strongly urge your son towards a classical education if he goes VoTech....but in the most cost-effective manner possible. JC, online courses, and just the right book-list can make him a better man than Four Years Among the Moonbats, and with VoTech he'll be worth employing.

328 Yeah, all International and NCAA air rifles use the team tank now. You can get the onboard removable tank charged at a dive shop, but they are very difficult to transport on an airliner. For several years, there were decent bargains on Anschutz and Steyr "side-pumpers" as teams converted. IMO they are just as accurate, but of course you break firing position on each shot, and in competition that's huge.

There are many more moving parts inside a precision air rifle than in a firearm, and of course there is valving too so tolerances are critical. They are always more expensive than a comparable gunpowder rifle. There's just more to them.

I'm not much of a soda drinker, either, but, jeez, this is grog we're talking about. Priorities. Get the coke, stat! Or, drink yer rum straight. Get some bloody vodka, tout desuite, also. BTW- have a crack at a dirty black russian. Vodka, kahlua and coke. Awesome.

356 Watched the first episode of "Lilyhammer", which Iowahawk pointed at on his Twitter feed, and I think I'm a fan. Basic setup is a wiseguy from New York (that guy on Sopranos who's also in the E Street Band) gets witness protection and is relocated, at his own request, to Norway. So New York Wiseguy meets super-PC Norwegian snow society. Hilarity definitely ensues.

Iowahawk called it something like the most anti-PC show ever, and I can already see how that might be true. Worth checking out if you have a Netflix sub. It's a Netflix production and available on their Instant service. I enjoyed the first episode a lot and will definitely check out more. I'd like to tell you more but it would spoil things. Interesting thing is that the producer and writer names look Norwegian to me, which hints at the idea that some Norwegians came up with the idea of importing a Mafioso into their odd society and watching the results.

The audience were all members and were furious about the support with their money of OCare. The AARP rep literally told them that she was running the meeting and they needed to shut the hell up. 2) My mistake was buying a big enough house that they could all squeeze into. The next one is going to be a 2 room shack, or maybe a small RV, and no one that isn't sharing my bed gets to live with me. Right now, that means my dog and that's it. (fml)

478 So. Think those scientist stuck in the ice are getting a little . . . nervous?

That ain't like McMurdo. No air stirp, no supplies good for a year, just a cramped cold steel hull to sit in.

And no matter how well insulated, steel gets effing cold.

Did I mention condensation? Humans breathe out warm moist air. Contacting cold steel causes the moisture to condense out so everything's got a coat of wet.

494 You did not miss anything except Hefler as a Toaster with a body to kill for or die as many of Twelve Colonies found out.

Ron Moore of Star Trek: The Next Generation did the reboot.  And you see the Cylons aren't aliens.  But the resentful and rebelling creations of humans.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Unexpurgated Edition) at December 29, 2013 12:31 AM (LSDdO)

496 Not because I have a problem with a female in a fighter jock role or something. But the original had him as a male. They shouldn't have screwed around with that.

And secondly, they did it for one reason only: political correctness.

It's like the freaking hobbit got done in for the same reason.

That and money.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Unexpurgated Edition) at December 29, 2013 12:34 AM (LSDdO)

497 Well the reboot also lacked Athena, Cassiopeia, and Sheba.  So they turned Starbuck and Boomer into females.  And then Boomer is also a Toaster skinjob sleeper agent.

The ending of the series will make you have a desire to hunt down and exterminate the writers.  Friend thought from the Wiki entry it was like Gall Force.  Told her nope, Apollo convinces all the survivors to renounce technology and wave good-bye to the 'good Cylons' who keep their technology.  In Gall Force the Solnoids, Paranoids, nor Humans or MME got out alive.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at December 29, 2013 12:38 AM (zb54T)

498 At least when they did Star Trek, Kirk was still male.

Want to add characters, fine go ahead. Do it right and you got a winner.

Don't substitute female for male.

Gonna turn Luke Skywalker into a chick?

Or reverse. Let's make Buffy the vampire slayer into Billy.

505 GGE this should cure any desire to see the new series.  From the Battlestar Galactica Wiki on the new series -

The Cylons themselves celebrate a monotheistic religion with a deity similar to the God of the Abrahamic religions. The Cylons and Colonials consider each other's religions to be false, reflecting the current Islam/Christianity/Judaism strife between the Western world and the Middle East, or clashes between colonizing forces and many indigenous or native populations throughout the age of exploration and modernity.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at December 29, 2013 12:55 AM (zb54T)

506 You want to know how a female fighter jock should be, read Sabrina Chase's excellent Sequoia series. I gots no problem with strong women, in fact I find a lot to admire about a woman that can do a tough job (like fly fighter jets and kill bad guys, or build fighter jets for that matter) and still be womanly. I just don't get a woman doing a "Man's job" that tries to act like a man. You aren't one, you are a woman, be PROUD of that.

510 I don't know about rl but on tv they always show women acting like they THINK men act. (and some in rl will do the same)

Since they're women, they don't have the perceptions of what they do from the male veiwpoint only from the female viewpoint.

And of course it doesn't make sense.

Women don't make sense to the majority of guys for the same reason.

The only difference I can see is that men don't spend a lot of time telling women how to act like women. (at least I don't or ever did)

I may have hinted at some different ways to act like a freaking human being so maybe I'm guilty too.

Possibly, of course a lot of it is knowing when to hit the bridges eh?

It's like the Indiana into Louisville KY Jam.....

yeah it gets sporty but at least once you are through the metaphorical birth canal you are free in those two examples...

the ATL is the perpetual birth canal.... I mean DC is worse at peak and Columbia is dumber pound for pound but the ATL strives to be Lost Angels East

559 Was in ATL for Christmas. What do all those fuckers do down there? I love the lane pricing idea, why isn't that used everywhere. Pay to play.

Heh Nip I think the Democrat's idea now is to destroy the economy so people can't afford to drive and wean the middle class extant off the roads....

I still want my goddamned air car the 50s promised me.

It's my night to stay up all night so I can sleep today and get up for my 12 hour work shift tonight. 3 days and then it's vacation time.

562 Ha ha. I was in Vinnings and son said Cobb Co will not let the subway/Marta train come to the county because they don't want Obama voters coming up there. Made sense to me.

563 Atlanta driving is awesome (at times). I left Six Flags one night (many moons ago) and drove East on I-20 through downtown. Drove by the capital building at 115 mph and got PASSED by a BMW and a Beetle!

Posted by: weirdflunky at December 29, 2013 03:02 AM (WnG9C)

564 @559 GGE, man that sucks. I'll never forget going to Pittsburgh in the 70's with old college roommate. We got up early went up the tram to a bar just outside US Steel. At eight AM it was jammed with workers doing shots of rye and Iron City beer kickers. We were drunk by 9:30.

Possibly, of course a lot of it is knowing when to hit the bridges eh?

The fact that some genius traffic engineer figured that it's always better to merge to interstates together as you pass through an OH town.

Cincy 71/75 on the bridge, then 71/Rt50

Culumbus 71/70

Of course you have this rule to follow:

If you come into the highway merge on the R, you must cross 4 lanes of traffic and exit far L to continue on the HW you are travelling

Has that subsided any now that there's a toll?

Going to Nashville today. I don't remember why we picked Nashville.

yes we have to thread the middle but El Paso Texico and the ATL are the homes of the quadruple and quintuple lane change.....

571 Posted by: Nip Sip at December 29, 2013 08:05 AM (0FSuD) Yeah NS that seems to be the case. I pay taxes for every lane so if you want to pass me, f-off pass on the right.heh

We didn't have a lot of trouble, but I wargamed it so we'd go through three hours off peak...

It was a lot lighter than when we drove down here six months ago.

574 I pay taxes for every lane so if you want to pass me, f-off pass on the right.heh Posted by: weirdflunky at December 29, 2013 08:08 AM (WnG9C) Great story. Going to Daytona 500 about 10 years ago and a redneck in caddie convertible from AL with tag that said PoolDr was kicking ass down I-95 and a car of Obama voters kept cutting him off. It was bumper to bumper. After about 50 miles, he'd had enough. He flipped them the bird, pulled into the right curb lane and passed 20 cars. Everyone was fucking impressed. The Obama voters were left holding their dicks in their hands.

576 Freeway traffic. I remember that. Meanwhile, I am really wondering how bad the local road traffic will get when Sam's Club opens near by.

I will admit that I am normally just passing through ATL on the way to FL - so I get to just stick in the fastest lane and roll. No need to worry about getting to any particular place in ATL.

I grew up in GA, transplant to OH. Now I look at GA as 357 miles of billboard hell on the way to the beach.

What is the billboard  advertising  budget for Cafe Risque?

578 I was in Vinnings and son said Cobb Co will not let the subway/Marta train come to the county because they don't want Obama voters coming up there. That's pretty much why Baltimore's light fail project ground to a halt. The first leg was very successful at bringing the cast of The Wire to suburban malls and neighborhoods where rich progtards live and they demanded an immediate halt to it.

yup she's a hottie but:

1) I doubt she is as hot since she has been the poster gal for what 22 years now?

2) I am on my way to points east and west...thanks for reminding me I am in a box zipping along at 70MPH and as such unable to imbibe.

584 These aren’t rules, they aren’t regulations, they are dictates based on nothing more than Kathleen Sebelius’ momentary feelings.

How long will the insurance industry abide being treated like shoe shine boys?

Good question. It doesn't sound like it would be such a difficult lawsuit to win, if Sebelius is truly being so lawless. Where is the legal action?

585 The few corporate officers that own their company are the ones fighting back. The other companies are owned by thousands of people, none of whom serve as officers. If the officers spend the resources of the corporation fighting the federal government, they can be fired and sued for breach of fiduciary duty. The sort of people who buy huge chunks of insurance companies do it to make money. If they can't stand the new business model they are more likely to sell out than risk it all to fight the government.
