Overnight Open Thread (11-30-2013) - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

Welcome to the Caturday version of the ONT. Forgive me for what I am about to do to you.

In football news, these two items cannot be ignored.

First, it looks like both Tomlin and the sideline official will be disciplined following this chickenshit move on the part of Tomlin. I'm a lifelong fan of Pittsburgh, but trash like this should not be tolerated.

And, ICYMI, this is noteworthy. Get your jollies now because this kind of fail isn't likely to repeat itself with one of the greatest football programs in our generation. They are the home team but, still, failure this epic deserves special mention.

Last week, the Florida Gators were beaten by Georgia-Southern by a score of 26-20. Worse, GSU won without ever completing a single pass. Could it get worse still? Yes. Yes it can. Did I mention that this was supposed to be a paid hit for the Gators? They paid $550k for the pleasure of this embarrassment.

From tweep Jamie Jones, this letter from NASA.

Dear Mr. Jones

We thank you for your interest in our work. Unfortunately though, we have no interest in your attached sketch entitled "A Breakthrough in Awesome Space Rockets, Now Give Me Some Money". We've long been aware of the science behind the reaction that occurs between Coke and Mentos, so believe us when we say that there's no practical use for it in our work - even if we did use "a shit load of Coke", as you so eloquently put it.

The rest can be found here. My new most-favorite vid on You Tube. Even a dog needs someone to talk to.

To anyone who hasn't yet tuned into the Showtime series Masters of Sex, you don't know what you are missing. The writing and acting are superb and, well, there's lots of boobies. Plus, they have the best intro on television right now.

From tweep JavaJoe comes this simply delightful Thanksgiving greeting to President Obama.

This ONT brought to you by pinups of the feral variety:

3 The “Privilege” of Being Discriminated Against One of the basic assumptions of the Progressive notion of “privilege” is that it is so pervasive that it becomes the overwhelming factor that leads straight White “cis-gendered” males (AKA the “Kyriarchy“) to be oppress everyone else. This, of course, is peddled by those who themselves see only in terms of treating people unequally, and viewing them as innately different, and become the monsters that they accuse the “Kyriarchy” of being. The notion of “privilege” and the belief that straight White “cis-gendered” males are always the oppressors, while everyone else is oppressed for being straight/White/&c. or is perpetuating the “Kyriarchy” through “interlocking hierarchies,” has been previously dismissed. 15 6 Good one, NDH. TMZ is reporting that Paul Walker was killed in a car crash today. Posted by: no good deed at November 30, 2013 09:44 PM (HsJeN) Might be a hoax. There was a car crash reported in the Santa Clarita Valley Signal and one of the fatalities was supposedly Walker, but I haven't seen that confirmed yet. But still, Paul Walker of Fast and Furious movie fame dying in a car crash? Seems a bit too ironic - need to wait for confirmation.

86 http://wafflesatnoon.com/2013/06/11/mediamass-fake-news/ You may have looked up information on your favorite celebrity and stumbled across an article posted by the website Mediamass.net. This supposedly-satirical website offers untold numbers of fake, duplicated stories regarding celebrities in the name of humor. There are two primary problems with this scenario, however: the stories aren’t funny and real news sites have been fooled by these phony articles. ... As stated above, one type of story that can be found for every person on Mediamass “debunks” a death rumor supposedly circulating about that celebrity. Aside from basic details which vary for each celebrity, the rest of the “death hoax” article is duplicated verbatim.

91 Unfortunately, this means "Fast and Furious deaths a hoax" will be what the LIV associate with 'Fast and Furious'.

I'm pretty sure that's why they chose that name for the illegal gun thing...

"You hear about this 'fast and furious'?"
"Ya dawg, it's a movie."
"But this was about, like Mexico or something?"
"Lawl, na brah, it's a movie."

Etc.

Posted by: HeatherRadish at November 30, 2013 05:11 PM (hO8IJ)

92 So the mediamass site publishes death hoax debunkings about every celebrity possible. That's how they get traffic. When somebody actually dies they get traffic. Or when an actual hoax happens, they get the traffic. Dirtbags.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at November 30, 2013 05:11 PM (ZPrif)

98 “Death Hoax” Hoax http://wafflesatnoon.com/2013/06/11/mediamass-fake-news/ One article which exists for all celebrities on Mediamass claims that reports of a celebrity’s death are merely a hoax. In a few cases, these articles have confused fans when a celebrity actually passes away. Recent celebrity deaths such as J.J. Cale and James Gandolfini were initially rebutted by fans who posted “death hoax” articles by Mediamass. On October 27, 2013, news of the death of Lou Reed was “refuted” by readers who found the fake “death hoax” article posted by Mediamass – unaware that it was not a true news story. 206 Busy writing but with Walker's Porsche. what model was it?  A 930?  Or a Boxster?  IIRC the gas tank is up front.  And if the speed and force of the impact is great enough no crumple zone will save you from a catastrophic failure of the tank.

The low-light Karmann Ghia community lost a member that way last year in SoCal.  His black 58 hit an SUV at a good rate of speed head on and the gas tank failed.  A fire erupted and burned up the front half of that car plus killing the driver/owner.

Not really. Their celebrity dies and they go on, often for decades. They're the ones whose obituaries produce one of two thoughts. Either 'never heard of them but supposedly they were famous once' or 'he was still alive?'

Kind of like lottery jackpot winners. Because a few have spectacular public flameouts, we begin to assume that this is the natural consequence of sudden immense wealth. But we forget that the number of jackpot winners who lead quiet lives far outnumber those whose downfall makes the news.

269 The cult of James Dean is a matter of timing. He died just as he was reaching the top of his arc as a bright young thing. The point at which somebody shows they have a long term talent or are just flavor of the month. So he is forever frozen in that moment. Consequently a whole generation could pretend they were still in that moment as well.

Dean never had to show he could play any other type of role than the small sample in his resume. He never had to face career doldrums and become a sitcom dad or some other letdown from movie stardom.

At least with the lighter men's weight classes they fighters speed up as they go down in size, so you get a trade-off of power and speed. Kinda fascinating to see if UFC succeeds with this.

My liberal boss gushed about the Masters of Sex program and how "progressive" Masters and Johnson were - which kind of wrecked it for me.

What I know about Masters and Johnson is that they shocked the nation by revealing that (supposedly) a very large percentage of straight men had had homosexual experiences. In fact, their stats were skewed because they had interviewed men who had spent time in prison. Their dishonesty paved the way for later lies, damned lies and statistics - like the one about 10% of the population being gay. It's really more like 3%.

Jumping Jehoshaphat!

Different suspension and materials is why.

Semis beat the crap out of asphalt. Ever see a section just before a stop that's all rippled up?

That's from the semi tires bouncing as they stop (maybe because of a light or no load or maybe not) pound the pavement and/or the weight can actually shift the asphalt a little as the brakes are applied.

IMO trucks should pay a lot more road taxes as they do over 50% of the damage.

427 UFC just had the men's Ultimate Fighter season championship fight. 2nd rd choke victory. Bantamweights - 135 lbs. Probably fight at closer to 150. UFC's lightest weight class is Flyweight @ 125 lbs. They are reportedly gonna add Strawweight for both men and women -- 115 lbs. That's super tiny for dudes. I probably haven't weight that little since the 6th grade. UFC is really hoping for some asian and latin fighters for the lower weight classes. Especially asian. Japan has a bunch of mma fighters. But every time they come to the UFC to fight they keep getting their asses kicked by Americans and Brazilians. UFC hates that. Japanese fans lost interest in UFC after about the 12th Japanese dude got knocked out.

Metallica jumped the shark with the Black Album Megadeth got better, IMHO in the '90's and their three best albums are post-'80's. The Grunge crap destroyed a lot of good bands, but as Grunge has faded, Metal remains. A lot of good bands have popped up in the last decade.

The thing about 'ettes is that girls in High School tend to get clique-ish and only talk to about 10% of the young hoodlums wasting four years of their life at political indoctrination camps. Which means that 90% of male-gendered types hit their 20's just trying to remember what it was even like to talk to a female -- just talk. Turns out, if you can avoid saying, "ewwww, girly stuff" about knitting, many of them can discuss life, honor, projects, politics, cars, sports, firearms, and booze  -- y'know, important stuff -- just like anyone else.

At least the ones around here can. Then, again, at least 3/4 of the guys on other blogs are metrosexual-types who don't know jack about stuff.

Not much on conversation-- I'm not "ed-juh-caded" and don't live in a major metro.  There's a lot here that goes over my head, but I'm learning...

Consequently, often I can only sit by and laugh my ass off to someone else's witty remarks.  Or simply think:  "I agree."

Yeah its an actual series they are running. They made a les paul, a V, an explorer, an SG, and a 335 type thing. They originally were supposed to be gunmetal grey, but I think they are doing them in that desert tan, and they come with an olive drab case. I thought it was supposed be 100 of each, but I'm not sure. I ordered the frigging thing in april, and I guess they are just starting to deliver some.

The last batch of dishes (#four or #five) are in the dishwasher as of about 15 minutes ago. The counter on the sink side is reasonably clean. The counter on the cooktop side is still covered in junk, supplies, and detritus. They managed to get a bunch of chocolate on the floor that I have to get up before it migrates to carpet.

Just to illustrate the dealio -- a truffle is made by making a chocolate shell, which involves taking a block of white, dark, milk, or flavored chocolate and chopping into bits (uses a cutting board, sprays stuff everywhere). Then you pop that into a bowl and melt it (carefully) in the microwave [soften/stir/repeat]. Using a clean paintbrush, you paint the insides of the truffle molds (which are made from clear, stiff plastic about 1mm thick) with the chocolate and put the painted mold in the fridge to harden.

After the shell is done, you make up the filling -- usually ganache, but you can include nuts or caramel chips and whatnot (more bowls) -- and stuff it into the truffle (spoons). After the truffle is full, you paint more chocolate over the bottom to seal it up and cool it again to harden. When you're ready to make boxes of candy, you pop 'em out of the molds.

Dippin' things to make truffles -- they old; that's old school truffles. We in a new school, our generation, my generation.

Painting truffle molds lets you make stuff like this -- http://tinyurl.com/owgc8ss -- easily. The even newer method is to use silicon molds (still painted) so (a) you can just tug on the ends and have everything fall out, and (b) you can run the molds through the dishwasher.

You'd probably faint if you saw my kitchen six hours ago. Everything from powdered sugar to chocolate shavings and stuff piled in the sink, on the counters, open bottles of liqueurs.....

When we rebuilt the kitchen in 2004, one of the design considerations was that we could pretty much have an egg fight in it and be able to clean it up rapidly. The counters are granite slab; the backsplash is Corian; it's an undermount sink; the floor is resilient sheet vinyl and there is only one seam in the whole installation (and only I know where it is).....if I only had to haul crap out and wipe it down, I'd've been done hours ago. It's cycling all the stuff through the dishwasher and making it nice for next time that is all the work.

We've got an ice-cream maker (not the kind where you freeze the bowl, the kind with the built-in freezer) -- just bring some whole milk and/or cream.

By the way, if anyone has ever wondered, ice-cream makers and temporary generators are convenient, nifty, functional, and LOUD. As in, "you want several closed doors between you and the widget" loud, and you don't want it outside if your neighbors are touchy.

Heh. When the BH and I were staying in Taveuni, Fiji, at the former Travelodge (bought out by a private concern), we'd hear "fumpth" regularly -- it was the geckos falling off the walls or ceiling. We loved it, 'cause it meant that they were on-the-prowl eating nasty buggies -- used to crack us up.

If you stayed out late (not as common as you might think, because "island"), you'd stagger back to your room and hit the light switch, and easily a half-dozen geckos would lose their footing and fall to the floor -- after which, they'd frantically attempt to get to cover [as if we were gecko predators]. So it'd be "fumpth, frdfrdfrdumpthf'dmpth/scurry, fumpth/scurryscurryscurry....fumpth, scurry." -- and then this weird silence, as if all the hidden geckos were holding their breath and thinking "you didn't hear that, did you?"

680 I was going to do a warp drive, but my Dad didn't want to.

I know that you should never end a sentence in a preposition.

I've ignored the wrong thing.

Xbox 360 owners will soon be able to download either "Gears of War" -or- "Shoot Many Robots".

...Depending on which is available for free download on either the First or Sixteenth of the Month.

They'll probably be available by Noon EDT.

Okay.  I'm really going to bed now.

690 I also think I dreamt about a conspiracy with Paul Walker's death - like that reporter who died a few months ago. I guess I shouldn't listen to Coast 2 Coast AM when I am sleeping.

Words to remember!

Of course it was much more mightmare-ish when teh Art Bell was on. Dude could give ya the creeps reading a commercial. In comparison, George Noory is just some nice voice comin' out of the radio....

Thought I read somewhere that Bell is planning to go back on the air. Can't wait. The Weirdness Quotient on radio has dropped way too low.

702 http://tinyurl.com/px94pab British universal health practitioners forced an Italian woman there on work assignment to have her baby forcibly removed by caesarean section by social workers. And fifteen months later, STILL refuse to unite mother with child. Because in Essex, it takes a village. Just call a pregnant woman crazy, and the baby's yours to take and keep. No consultation with the woman's family or Italian authorities.

705 702 Infidel, I am not surprised at the lengths authoritarians go. Better sooner than later for others to finally figure themselves the ones wearing tinfoil hats for denying just what to expect; as if reading the writing on the wall equates to either "conspiracy theory" or making "false allegations." WE didn't write it. WE didn't vote it. Inalienable rights are worth protecting, more than anything else. I found this well worth the read. 707 Died early. Was part of the Baby Boomer generation. The bad boy of a generation.

I never thought he was much of an actor since his "acting" seemed to consist of a couple of facial expressions. He was the Kristen Stewart of the 50's.

Uhhh, the first "boomers" were born in 1946, after WW2 and all the GI's came home and began making babies. The oldest boomer was 9 when Dean was killed. He was born in 1931, pretty far from being a boomer. A depression era baby.
