I'm Ashamed My Son Likes Football

Peter Beinart is a bad, bad father. Because he allowed his son to watch and enjoy a football game. Which apparently is only slightly less shameful than taking his son to a back-alley cockfight and handing him a starter-flask of Thunderbird.

Last Saturday night, he [Beinart's 8-year-old son] proudly dug out a long-unused Patriots jersey and joined me on the couch late into the night as the Patriots dispatched the Indianapolis Colts.

It was wonderful. And it made me a little sick.

It made me sick because I could see the game through his eyes. And it wasn't pretty. My son, unfamiliar with the NFL's pieties, assumed that hurting the other team's players was the goal. To his untutored eye, the violence that guilt-ridden fans like myself decry was a feature, not a bug. He didn't cheer the injuries; he's too sweet for that. But despite my insistence to the contrary, I suspect the message he took from the experience was: The only thing you need to know about the large man writhing in agony on the screen is whether he's on our team.

Bad British NFL Commentary

On The Intelligence of Football Players

At five-eight, a hundred and eighty-eight pounds, the Bills safety Jim Leonhard, a nine-year veteran, is among the smallest and also the slowest starting defensive backs in the game. And yet, watching him on film, he appears to teleport to the ball. Leonhard's name seems to enter any conversation about football intelligence; he knows every teammate's responsibilities in every call, and understands the game as twenty-two intersecting vectors. "He'd walk off the bus and you'd think he was the equipment manager," Ryan Fitzpatrick said. "He's still in the league because he's the quarterback of the defense."

Obama: I Would Never Let My Imaginary Trayvon-like Son Play Football

But note that Obama still enjoys watching football. Because he can handle it while you can't.

NY Pols Propose Law to Ban Youth Football

So football now seems to have quickly joined smoking and junk food as one of those uncool, distasteful activities that only the underclass publicly indulge in. The next stage will be regulation and legal harassment which are waypoints on the path to eventual effective banning. For the children.

So if all goes according to plan this is the football your kids will be watching:

Rerun: Who Goes Nazi?

It is an interesting and somewhat macabre parlor game to play at a large gathering of one's acquaintances: to speculate who in a showdown would go Nazi. By now, I think I know. I have gone through the experience many times-in Germany, in Austria, and in France. I have come to know the types: the born Nazis, the Nazis whom democracy itself has created, the certain-to-be fellow-travelers. And I also know those who never, under any conceivable circumstances, would become Nazis.

Finding Your Spark of Genius

Many people could be savants at something but go through life without ever discovering it. One of the advantages of the US has long been that we really don't have a fixed path to success and you can always jump from one pathway to another if you wish.

The Snobbery of Rich People's Scolding

Because the proles are just so icky with their fatness and smoking and love of football.

Take note, however, of which economic class Mayor Bloomberg thinks he is saving from themselves. In his mind he's doing poor folks a favor when he assumes the role of portion police, but in reality he's merely showing his prejudice that poor people are disgustingly fat and too stupid to understand why. He must believe that they need the government to ban their bad habits, one after another, until they're eating organic arugula from Whole Foods.

New York's failed expedition into governmental nannying is symptomatic of its class structure. Rich people's scolding is really a form of snobbery masquerading as concern for poor people's well-being. Rather than admit that the underclass repulses them, wealthy New Yorkers try to strip away their repulsive behavior by force of law. Expect the trend to continue through the de Blasio years.

And expect de Blasio to continue the same nannying policies for the same reason.

The Last Holdout Dies

A former Japanese soldier who hid in the Philippine jungle for nearly 3 decades after World War Two died in Tokyo on Thursday. He was 91 years old.

Hiroo Onoda was sent to Lubang Island as an intelligence officer of the Imperial Japanese Army in 1944. After the end of the war, he remained in the jungle until 1974, when he emerged from his hideout and returned to Japan.

Years ago I read Onoda's book, No Surrender: My 30 Year War, and it was a pretty interesting read. One point he made several times is that he was part of a guerrilla warfare unit who were trained to fight behind enemy lines, ignore enemy propaganda, keep fighting no matter what else happened and specifically ordered not to commit suicide. And he and fellow holdouts essentially brainwashed themselves over the three decades that everything they saw and heard was still part of an enemy ruse. Even his own brother speaking to him across a field in the 1970s wasn't enough to break him out of his constructed belief system.

Bill Maher: 'Thug' is the New 'N Word'

Because there always has to be a new N word - otherwise how are you going to make people race criminals when actual racists are so hard to come by?

On his HBO show Real Time on Friday, Maher said Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman made "a great point ... that thug is now the 'N-word.'"

"I think it's a very creative way to point out that racism has really kind of gone underground in this country," Maher said. The comedian then said he believed that whenever whites "see a black guy they don't like: thug."

"Because it's socially unacceptable now--unlike when it once was--to say the 'N-word,'" he said. "So that's sort of the word that they use instead."

So I guess we're gonna need a new word to describe people who are thuggish.

Talking History Without a License = $1092 Fine

The goal was to see if any of the downtown drivers were giving illegal speaking tours of the city's numerous sight-seeing spots.

One of them did, and it cost him a fine of more than $1,000.

City officials have put rickshaw drivers on notice that they can't give unlicensed tours in pursuit of a few extra dollars in their pocket.

As far as police see it, any retelling for hire about the city's past can be delivered only by a city-licensed tour guide, like those generally seen driving horse carriages or leading walking tours.

I take it the Charleston police have already solved all the real crimes.

18 Charleston is really protective of its history to the point that all tour guides are licensed and must retest every two years or so. I get it, but it seems to fall in line with the whole, an established industry protecting itself from upstart competition. I love SC, but that doesn't mean this place is particularly sane.

21 Good evening morons. A few nights of Redbox here in casa hobo.

"Europa Report" was one. It wasn't bad. A team of scientists and astronauts lands on Europa to take readings. Unfortunately they have to land on thin ice in order to get anything useful and, well, watch the movie. The acting was great. And they did a lot with what must have been a budget pickpocketed out of Charlie Sheen's coat. Not entirely sure about the script but meh.

50 So Obama decided to go to the Olympics. He goes to Sochi, and he's asked to give a speech at the opening ceremony. The stadium is full security is TIGHT. The athletes are double and triple checked before they're allowed to enter the arena, but eventually the parade of athletes goes off without a hitch. Thousands of Russian children perform to the delight of the cheering crowd. Finally, the ceremony reached its climax and President Obama steps to the podium to address the world. A hush falls over the crowd as The Lightbringer prepares to speak. Obama begins his historic address. "Oooooooooooooooooooooo" The crowd is confused, but they cheer anyway. As the cheers die down, Obama continues. "Oooooooooooooooooooooo" A ripple of nervous laughter can be heard under the cheers, but still the crowd still goes wild. Heartened, Obama goes on. "Oooooooooooooooooooooo" Suddenly, a nervous aide slips onto the stage and whispers into the President's ear, " Sir, the TelePrompTer is to your left, you're reading the Olympic Rings on the stadium facade "

52 What is Old is New Again: College Leftists Threaten “Physical Action” Back when Leftist campus radicals were more than a sad pathetic joke, “direct action” was one of the methods and threats they used to get campuses to do what they wanted. What is old is new again, as the University of Michigan Black Student Union (BSU) has threatened “physical action” unless their seven demands are met. Among these demands are a demand that people be indoctrinated about how White people are evil, Affirmative Action to raise the number of Blacks by denying admission to others, a free reign to implement “change” according to their dictates, and of course $$$. 89 18 Charleston is really protective of its history to the point that all tour guides are licensed and must retest every two years or so. I get it, but it seems to fall in line with the whole, an established industry protecting itself from upstart competition. Posted by: David at January 30, 2014 10:49 PM (6Oj/Y) ---------------------------------- Yup. And I don't like the 1st-amendment implications either. The city could have official guides, who can display their license where the public can see it and know that they're tested and "qualified." But let free souls do what they will. This ain't medicine, where someone could get hurt.

I find it hypnotic and very affecting. It's so expertly crafted and so completely about its themes (to the actual detriment of any sense of plot and a large chunk of the original characters) that I just find it infinitely watchable.

142 I just found an 18th century description of an Indian (Shawnee?) war whoop: woach, woach, ha ha, hach, woach. Since the writer was Scottish, I imagine that the "ch" is supposed to be pronounced as in "loch." I think that "woach" may be a kind of deep bark from the chest and the "ha" is higher pitched, maybe something closer to a wolf's howl, not sure what "hach" represents though. It is the only actual description of what it sounded like that I have ever run across, so I am pretty pleased - I have been wondering what it actually sounded like for years, and Hollywood's interpretations never sound particularly menacing.

163 From the "Nazi" article. The best description of a labor leader I've probably ever read. True in 1941, true now. "L is a very powerful labor leader. “My dear, he is a man of the people, but really fascinating.“ L is a man of the people and just exactly as fascinating as my horsy, bank vice-president, on-the-make acquaintance over there, and for the same reasons and in the same way. L makes speeches about the “third of the nation,” and L has made a darned good thing for himself out of championing the oppressed. He has the best car of anyone in this room; salary means nothing to him because he lives on an expense account. He agrees with the very largest and most powerful industrialists in the country that it is the business of the strong to boss the weak, and he has made collective bargaining into a legal compulsion to appoint him or his henchmen as “labor’s” agents, with the power to tax pay envelopes and do what they please with the money. L is the strongest natural-born Nazi in this room. Mr. B regards him with contempt tempered by hatred. Mr. B will use him. L is already parroting B’s speeches. He has the brains of Neanderthal man, but he has an infallible instinct for power. In private conversation he denounces the Jews as “parasites.” No one has ever asked him what are the creative functions of a highly paid agent, who takes a percentage off the labor of millions of men, and distributes it where and as it may add to his own political power."

Layer Cake made me excited for Daniel Craig as James Bond.

Two out of three of his films did not disappoint, and the one that did was laid low by the writer's strike.

Posted by: Hawkins1701 at January 30, 2014 11:03 PM (7aJyE)

As I recall, Layer Cake is the movie that pretty much got DC the Bond gig. It's also the best British crime film in decades, at least since The Long Good Friday.

The best part about Children of Men is that when it came out, there were several critics and womyn pundits who were caterwauling about how it was horribly misogynistic.........not realizing that the author, PD James, is actually a woman.

The Machinist is super creepy, but even creepier is Brad Anderson's earlier film Session 9. Skin-crawlingly so.

'sup jackwagons.

All that physical play taught us real world lessons. Don't piss off the big kid. Don't be a whiny bitch. Don't piss off the people that lived next to the open field. Because consequences. Posted by: The Hickster at January 31, 2014 12:03 AM (TI3xG) I learned getting my ass handed to me by the older kids. Once I got good enough, I was able to play with the older kids. In 8th grade we were playing pick up football with the juniors and seniors in high school. At first they ran all over us, after a while, we were able to hold our own. Once we got to high school, we were able to play with the biggest players and not back down. Once we got to be the "big boys", we knew not to take the smaller players lightly.

Needed new power adapter for netbook.  What got shipped will have to return.  The elbow connector that plugs into the netbook actually has a hole in the plastic casing.  A hole that is painted silver so it contracts against the black casing.  So seems QA saw it but it got shipped.  Whoops.

The nine cell battery on the other hand seems to be working.  Came at 45% charge.  Ran it down to about 32%.  And now it is fully charged and indicating 10 hours battery life in High Performance mode.

Ten years ago my mother told Paul they better get here to put in new kitchen floor. Paul told me to buy tiles, size, & how many. I went to,Home Depot & picked out beautiful white tiles with pink/or mauve rose in middle. Tiles were here for over a year before they finally installed it. My mother's Alzheimer's was escalating & I took day off to take her out. She wanted to come home before they were done. I had to use Goof Off to remove some of glue between tiles. I love kitchen floor so much I put shoes & boots on & of f in back hall. I am going to sleep now. Good night, Horde.

311 The documentary showed the Danish one several times too---he had been (ritually) strangled or hanged. The premise of the show was that in the time period of poorer, colder, wetter weather* that the Celts would horribly execute their kings/queens (it's literally called "overkill") for having failed to placate the Earth mother goddess/es when the weather was especially bad for several years. And as part of that, that these were dead nobles and not executed criminals or the like. They know the weather in the peat bands because of the number of microscopic pollen; wood chips; and something that I've forgotten that tells them what the water situation was like.

*Oddly enough, there was no mention of how the weather was influenced back then before the Industrial Revolution or how it's almost as if the weather changes in an up-and-down cycle naturally on its own. Oh, and that the poorest famine times that led to the executions were wet and cold times!

347 "Time Passages" 1977: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smu5AbnQdps Al Stewart had two monster hits in the late 70s, "Year of the Cat" and "Time Passages". Then he dropped off the face of the earth. Or so it would seem. But looks can be deceiving. He has made great music both before and after those hits. A good case can be made that those songs, as good as they were, were nowhere near his best work.

354 The 46 Senators who voted to give US guns rights away to the United Nations- Part One: Now, Which 46 Senators Voted to Destroy Us? Well, let their names become known !! See below . If you vote in one of the states listed with these 46 “legis..traitors”… vote against them. In a 53-46 vote, the Senate narrowly passed a measure that will stop the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty. The Statement of Purpose from the Bill reads: "To uphold Second Amendment rights and prevent the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty." The U.N. Small Arms Treaty, which has been championed by the Obama Administration, would have effectively placed a global ban on the import and export of small firearms. The ban would have affected all private gun owners in the U.S. and had language that would have implemented aninternational gun registry, now get this, on all private guns and ammo. Astonishingly, 46 out of our 100 United States Senators were willing to give away our Constitutional rights to a foreign power.

366 Ive noticed that ONTs are sparsely commented on nights that follow discouraging news days; this one sucked in particular. Not as badly as Election Night (aka national suicide day, which got lots of comments) but when you dare to hope just a little that there's a way out, only to have your own side fuck you in the ass with a pineapple. Those kind of days.

Oops. Was that indelicate? Oh well. It is what it is.

Certainly no reflection on Maet's ONT abilities to inform and provoke, which are as usual legendary.

The newer better Americans will elect amigos and amigas who have NO deference to the founding as well. You're arguing that I need to reward a party that is fucking me completely by my 65th birthday with an unassaliable democrat bobsled course that wil not need to try to use treaties to alter the Constitution. 376 Why would a Wookiee, an 8-foot-tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of 2-foot-tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit, Amanda Knox! The defense rests.

408 Those prepaid phones are all activated with a credit card or bank account that has to have a physical address.  The cops should be able to pull that from the cell provider very quickly.

They're telling me that the cellphone isn't helpful. What argument can I use to persuade them otherwise? Because I'm relying on them.

Go to the state police, the local guys are hit and miss.  Also try that local suicide hotline, they may have more direct experience.

A few ONT's back he said that he lived quite close to the falls. He could he them at times and could definitely hear the fireworks every time they went off. He even said how long it took to drive to falls from his place. It wasn't long. Well under 30 minutes, probably more than 10 minutes. Assuming they've got a few with his name in town, this might help to eliminate those further away from where he might be located. Dunno, maybe narrow it down from say 6, to 2? I know it's a longshot, but ... it's something. He posted it the night he came back after an absence.

Yeah, they're going to look at the potential number of people and decide it's too much of a goose chase for your concern.

416 If you have a small time email provider, and you can get to technical support (and actual person), they should be able to pull the name of his ISP and a contact number.  If your email is GMail or Yahoo, it will take weeks, dont bother.

417 Shit.

My last contact with NFPD, I got transferred to a guy who said that he couldn't provide me with more info because of privacy concerns. I told him that I had more info as to where he might be [ Posted by: otho at January 31, 2014 05:52 AM (9gNQd) ], and he told me that wasn't necessary.

I'm not seeing this as a positive sign.

What the fuck? Are they giving you the brush off? Or, do they know something? It doesn't sound like they'd be on top of this in such a short amount of time. Sounds like they got donuts to dunk. Fuck.

Posted by: otho at January 31, 2014 01:24 AM (9gNQd)

420 cthulh, did they ask if you were related or just say privacy and shut the door.  The latter is far better then the former.

Posted by: Jean at January 31, 2014 01:28 AM (4JkHl)

421 Don't mean to badmout them. They might be in the middle of dealing with shit and undermanned, but, shit...

There is no further location info necessary -- thus, they found him. And, according to him, there's nothing more to say -- and I think we're all aware about when the talk is over.

424 cthulhu - the privacy fence can come down for many reasons - medical treatment, psyche commit, even a wellness check that he passes, etc.

425 Seriously, if anyone else wants to try and call in, please feel free to do so. They know me, so they know what they've told me -- they don't know about the whole blog.

And if anyone gets the faintest flicker of hope, please bring it back. It's cold here.

It used to say something like "the subscriber is not available", for what it says now, reverse each group of 617-989-7537.

I don't know what could have triggered things. He was on the phone to Shredded Chi (who he was fond of) earlier.

Why, so they can learn how to convincingly take a dive whenever an opponent comes near so they can get a free kick?  HELL with THAT.

439 ' Hey, don't be a dick'. If including that pic of Messi leads to Breinart watching BPL this weekend then his son will get the same message out of English football that he does out of American football. After one morning and afternoon watching guys sliding into two footed tackles, studs up onto unprotected ankles and knees, both sports will be banned. And then I won't be able to cheer either the Patriots or the Gunners.
