The downside is that it uses x-ray diffraction instead of millimeter radar. So if you do a lot of traveling, you'll be exposed to a non-trivial amount of radiation though they claim that each scan is 50 times weaker than a normal x-ray. They already have systems like this for scanning checked bags, but they're very slow and can handle maybe 60 to 70 bags an hour. I doubt human scanners will be any faster.

Seeing Barry reminds me of someone in college of whom I have a very hazy memory of once saying she wanted to adopt a black kid. No reason I bring it up, except I definitely wouldn't have called her a liberal at the time. I never knew if it was idle speculation designed to feel me out or a the glint of a relentless waterfall within that would (gently) not have relented till it wore down opposition (towards adoption in general, that is).

As it was, I could not wear down her opposition, so I never found out...oh well. Did manage to graduate, though.

55 Kelli,
Yes, I liked that version of Blackadder the best as well.
We should really consider bringing back tights - and codpieces - for men!

Now for that list this one:
( The housework can wait.
seems really out of place.  Maybe British women are more devoted to housewifery than American wives, but I don't know many (any?) women who are so devoted to housework.
Of course, some take that to an extreme.  A good friend of mine is at his wits end working full time (and bringing in 80% of the family income), taking care of three kids, and doing all the cooking, shopping, and cleaning.  Oh, and he's having major surgery next week.  I spent 1 1/2 with him on the phone yesterday trying to help him come up with a way to broach the subject with his (pretty shrewish, imho) wife without it turning into a trip to divorce court.
I'm not the best housekeeper on the planet, but some women are truly awful.

Elizabeth, ask Mortis to tell you when he realizes his place.

Mine came when I went with my wife for her first OB visit.

We're in the exam room. She's on the table and I'm sitting in a chair near the door.

The nurse busts in, flinging the door open and all but smashing me behind it and runs up to my wife saying "congratulations, how are you feeling". No "I'm sorry, sir" or "are you OK" until I mumbled something about "I'm fine too, not that anyone cares" as I moved out from behind the door.

Told my wife later that sort of underlined the point for me.

Sassy - being without my laptop has really made me slow to be online at all. I have the ability to use the mans computer, but his keyboard sucks... plus he hasn't been working much lately due to a slow time of year so we have been spending lots of time together just hanging out.

I am already getting the icky smells thing. The combo of being prego and quitting smoking at the same time has really made my sense of smell go nuts. Tonight I would have sworn that my body lotion smelled like rotten milk. The man says it didn't but it just reeked so bad to me that I almost took another shower... thankfully that icky smell passed quickly though.

Lacey - lately I have been craving lots of gummi bears. Strange since I didn't like gummi bears for the past 15 years, but they are one of my favorite foods now

>>People in Boston want it known across the country that Chicago has nothing on Boston - politically speaking, of course....

Deval Patrick, and (Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid intend to stall the election certification until the health care bill is rammed through Congress, even if that means defying the will of the people of Massachusetts.

facebook people....

Did you see the "color" trick on yesterday's status updates??

(if you don't have it, there was this mass email asking women to just state the color of their bra on their status updates to stand in solidarity of breast cancer awareness. Of course it was fun to confuse the guys as to why all the girls were posting their colors.)

Well here was the  response from a few guys I've seen today:

URGENT! FACEBOOK VIRUS ALERT. An email recently went out to women asking them to post the color of their bra. THIS IS A VIRUS.To fix it, you must remove your bra, then go to Settings>Enable Webcam> Record Movie. Please repost to your status and let all of your friends know.

113 Scott/Beatdown Dad,
I'm not usually the confrontational type either, I try to use humor to defuse situations.  The whole time I was weighing in my mind whether I should say something like "You know, maybe next time you'll do what I say" in the presence of the nurse.  Wisely I didn't.  This was the same hospital we were going to have the kid in, so not a good idea.

I fully appreciate the pregnant woman being the only thing that matters at the hospital, but I don't like to be thought of as a typical Law and Order or Lifetime Movie of the Week character.

167 Here's a question that someone smarter than me has probably brought up in a much more refined way.  But why is it we need better airport security, more screenings, etc?

Isn't the best, easiest, and most effective method to insure no "profile" terrorists is issued a visa to enter the US, even for a visit?  Sure that will mean "harassing" legitimate travelers who are coming here for perfectly reasonable and legal reasons.

But, it:

 1.  Allows for a much more thorough and thoughtful "screening."  2.  Keeps potential terrorists away from the airport in the first place.  3.  Intrudes less on the thousands and thousands of travelers who have no ill intentions.  4.  Allows those legitimate travelers time to prepare to face tighter visa restrictions.  5. You're mainly ticking off non-Americans and frankly, who cares.  6. Keeps the TSA and other authorities at the airport as a last line of defense, not the main line of defense.

Is it perfect, no, I'm sure there are ways to circumvent even this type of crackdown.  But, coming here is a privilege and if someone wants to do so, they should be prepared to go through some extra legwork for the opportunity.  If not, stay at home.

Think of the billions we're spending on TSA and ask yourself, wouldn't a better investment of that money be spending on beefing up the visa approval process overseas?  Keep terrorists as far away from boarding a flight in the first place as possible.

232 The chief reason abortion is doomed:  pretty much every kid's baby book now starts with an ultrasound photo from about twelve weeks.  "That's YOU in that picture!"

The left will fight, and fight, and fight, but the sand is washing away from beneath them.  Heck, even in movies made by hip ex-stripper directors (Juno) the oh-so-hip girl has the baby.

This is a case where the Alinsky tactic smacks the liberals square in the gut:  make the enemy abide by his own rulebook, and libs keep going on about the sanctity of life whenever snail darters or serial killers are in peril.

I'm not taking any meds now, and haven't taken any since september or october. I was diagnosed with a type of connective tissue disease several years ago, but they never gave me anything more than 10mg a prednisone (a baby dose) and I stopped taking that almost a year ago and everything is still fine. I have my first docs appointment with a normal doc at the end of the month, and I don't think I'll need a high-risk OB (at least I hope I don't because the nearest major hospital with a high-risk doc is over an hour away).

266 @249

It is insanely good with Duck Breast!  Try it in a Crepe with some  Duck (smoked!) and Robiola or Taleggio cheese.

Cheese is really restricted right now (although we had a tiny bit of crumbled blue in the duck salad yesterday) 'cause of Mr. Y-not's diet.  But if/when his glucose comes down - or for some special occasion - I'll check those out.

I cut an imposing figure in the local Hippymart (WholeFoodsType Store).

We have a Trader Joe's here (well, several), but I just don't "get" it.  Their produce is not particularly imaginative (no Swiss chard, for example) and it's all pre-packaged.  I guess the appeal is that it's fresh food packaged for busy people who don't cook or something.

Obama has ruined arugula for me.  Not that I ever had it a lot before, but now I see his ugly mug in every leaf.  So yesterday I just closed my eyes!

The other hippymart nearby is called Sprouts.  Their produce is good and you can get bulk dry goods (like bulgur), but I'm put off by the aisle after aisle of bottled nutritional supplements.  Call me crazy but pills just don't scream "health food" to me.

288 ..  the Sony Open.. and baby names..
Heh.
Liz..
An economics professor recently estimated that Tiger Woods' marital problems have had a whopping $12 billion stock market impact. This bizarre intersection of personal woes and global finance is all about branding. Woods had been the public face of a wide range of products and services. His image of focus, grace under pressure, and peerless performance resonated far beyond sports. It didn't hurt, too, that golf is the pastime of choice of the corporate set. So Woods added value, all of which drained away -- with interest -- over the past weeks.

The biggest corporate victim was consulting giant Accenture, which had made Woods the entire face of its organization. Woods' image equaled Accenture's image, so the company was forced to perform an emergency image-ectomy. And that's where baby names come in.

Naming a child after a living celebrity is risky business. The problem is that the name's cultural meaning isn't yet settled. Just as Tiger Woods "means" something different in our society than he did a year ago, the meaning of celebrity's name can shift unpredictably over time.
(Don't believe the breathless media accounts of a flood of baby Baracks! hehe)

If you had ever spent two days in mid December in the Norfolk harbor on the USS George Washington waiting for the winds to die down enough to dock you, your opinion of that movie would be quite a bit different.  Some smartass thought that it would be a perfect 24/7 movie to play until we managed to make it pierside.

There was some talk about a hostile takeover of the TV studio, but as far as I know it never happened.

309 Garrett - I'm so sorry that happened to you! Yes, my hip pops every time I rotate it. And for ballet, one is supposed to be as turned out as possible (a term that means nothing to people who don't take ballet). But the thing is, I am naturally turned-out, almost 180 degrees, but the pressure it puts on my left hip is pretty bad. I don't feel it during dance, but the next day it's really bad. Also, my left arm socket cannot reach straight up like the right when I lift my arm up. It will not stay straight. So, your massage is sounding better and better by the second.

I knew if I drove the car down the driveway that there was an 80 percent chance I wouldn't be able to drive back up due to the ice underneath all the snow. I'm just so sick of this cold. And then there's my dad in West Palm Beach telling me I should feel sorry for him and his wife because their blood isn't as thick as it once was when they lived up north, and they gave all their winter clothing away, and now that the temps are in the 30s at night there, oh, what will they do? If I had a way to hang myself from the ceiling by my left ankle, I think I would die of pleasure.  I have found that some core exercises and stretching done with the aid of an excercise ball help a lot.  But when that hip joint loads up with gas, it just miserable until it releases the pressure.

You need a good 1/2 hour of elbow in your upper hip joint/lower back with some targeted massage over your left glute, hip bone and down your left thigh.

Next to back pain, this can be the worst kind of discomfort.

424 “This is a stunning admission by Paul Kirk and the Beacon Hill political machine,” said Brown in a statement. “Paul Kirk appears to be suggesting that he, Deval Patrick, and (Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid intend to stall the election certification until the health care bill is rammed through Congress, even if that means defying the will of the people of Massachusetts. As we’ve already seen from the backroom deals and kickbacks cut by the Democrats in Washington, they intend to do anything and everything to pass their controversial health care plan. But threatening to ignore the results of a free election and steal this Senate vote from the people of Massachusetts takes their schemes to a whole new level. Martha Coakley should immediately disavow this threat from one of her campaign’s leading supporters.”

Biden, who had a stuttering problem as a child, spoke of how his mother tried to comfort him when he struggled to get his words out.

"She lovingly would look at me and tell me, 'Joey, it's because you're so bright, you can't get the thoughts out quickly enough,'" he said.

Just throwing this out there, I don't really care, nor do I think it was fair. Some years ago the Lions were doing the replace the coach thing. They fired their coach and IIRC they hired Mariucci. The powers that be got angry because no black men were even considered for the job. The Lions pledged to interview suitable black candidates from that day forward and the issue was diffused. Fast forward to now and the skins fired their coach, hired Shanahan, and not a word was said about it. Do they have short memories, selective persecution, or what? Yes, I know the Lions still suck!!

Worse still, it's NFL policy that teams have to interview at least one black candidate for coach. Doesn't matter if they have no intention of hiring him, just go through the motions, life in a PC world.

Yep...

Seattle must interview at least one minority candidate before hiring a new head coach, according to NFL hiring protocols. The Seahawks requested to interview Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, who is African-American. There were conflicting reports Friday on whether he would choose to interview for the position.

Yup. And, if I remember right -- they actually interviewed the guy before the last game, then pretty much set up everything with Shanahan, but to actually satsify the Rooney Rule, had to re-interview the guy again after the season officially ended.

If I were that position coach I would have told them to f#@& off.

--Frazier should be good enough to do it on his own merits.  I'm torn about the rule, since sometimes good coaches may not interview well, and at the very leaset it gives them practice at it.  Still, if there's not good faith in both directions, I am not sure whether it even gains them any real practice.

Although there are qualified black candidates out there, this rule is pretty much a stick in the eye to any minority who may interview for a head coach position. Most team owners already have a new coach in mind before they fire the old one anyway.

596 A lot of people will be paying attention to Coach Morris in Tampa Bay.  Since Dungy built them up to their previous greatness, he has a big job before him and like Dungy it may be a subsequent coach who harvests the benefits even if Morris does succeed.

I can't read hearts, but I would hope that the success or failure of coaches speaks more to any owner more than skin color.  With a critical mass of black assistants now built up, there should not be a problem finding one who is due for a shot.

647 "the dems pissed away a once in a decade chance to enact a progressive agenda but since they're not a progressive political party, or even a particularly liberal one, this should surprise nobody that's been paying attention to what's been going on the last 30 years."

"Well, Of Course.
It doesn't take a genius to see that there's no way the Democrats keep control of Congress after midterms. They've run off all the Independents and the Republicans sure as hell won't be voting for them.

Given that Obama can't get anything done NOW, with a Democratic congress, his last two years, with a Republican congress, are going to make his first two look like Disneyworld in heaven.

It's going to be excruciating to watch."

666 "Thanks for the post. Yes, Carter was one of our best presidents......only time in my life I came close to feeling proud to be an American was when Jimmy Carter was president. Jimmy Carter stood firm for human rights, with the dictators of the world understanding he was their enemy and thus favoring Reagan. He forged a lasting peace between Egypt and Israel, one of the reasons he would later win the Nobel Peace Prize. He gave Panama back its canal, and showed by example to the nation the desirability of conservation. (I hope Obama puts back the White House solar panels next year). Jimmy Carter got the American hostages out ALIVE (if Reagan had been president, they would be dead, along with 100,000+ Iranians). He established the federal departments of Energy and Education, broadening the federal role in these important realms. He let the Russian people know that we disapproved of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Those with materialistic concerns often unfairly blame him for things outside his control: high gasoline prices (as if OPEC didn't play a role in that), high interest rates, stagflation, blah, blah, blah. In my view, people sometimes think a president has more control over the economy than he actually does. He did mess up, however, on the male-only draft registration (no need for that nonsense).

Heck, John Denver liked and admired Jimmy Carter, so Carter must have been good!! "

So, all the electronic drinking I want, just no real stuff.

I mentiond Robinson Crusoe On Mars earlier.  Just looked it up on Rotten Tomatoes.  It pulled a 91% rating!  Wow!  I always thought others considered it crap.

I looked it up because it seemed like it had to be rated better than I thought.  I was just watching the spaceships attacking Friday as he ran away from the slave camp.  Inadvertent great effect.  The way the ships sound, and the way they move.  They flit around like dragonflies.  It was freaky when I was a kid, and it's freaky now.

I always wanted to eat some of those hotdogs that Mona discovered.

Okay, here's a question for some of you older Morons: I remember watching a Western movie in the 70's on TV about two buddies, one white, the other black, who used to go around the Antibellum South and sell the black friend to slave-owners, then the white friend would free him and they'd run the scam again somewhere else. Of course, what happens is the white friend is prevented from freeing the black friend and he finds out what it's like to be a real slave--whippings, hanging, hobblings, etc.

Now, I must've seen this movie about 4 times (this was before video, ya young punks!) although it must've been broadcast at least twice a year for about 10 years, but I can't for the life of me remember who was in it, or what it was called! Can any of you film freaks help me here?

Thanks in advance...

You can go back to acting like you can hold your liquor and occaisionally get laid.

Anyhow, I'm for bed, one of the grandkids is having his seventh birthday party tomorrow and I'm going to get several years off my life in a housefull of sugar crazed munchkins. If you don't see me here on the ONT tomorrow night, I probably ate my gun.

When I was moviong up to Saratoga Springs, NY I heard endless litanies about how I was going to have problems driving in the snow and ice.

I never had a single problem. In fact the only people I saw that had problems were the locals.

The fact is there are stupid drivers in the North and in the South.  The biggest difference between the North and the South in driving is the ability of the local government to deal with snow and ice removal.

In the North they spend huge suns of money for snow plows and salt spredding. Not so in the South. What they do down here is call out the road scrapers that are used for dirt roads.  That turns a snow covered road into a a packed ice road.  They manually spread sand on black ice which provides about zero good.

Most intelligent people realize that the roads are bad and drive accordingly. However there are always idiots.

Posted by: Vic at January 09, 2010 08:56 AM (QrA9E) I wouldn't blow up a city. That is one of the few things that might actually create terrorists, rather than in just the fevered minds of the left. But you're absolutely right about the leadership. Just blow up their government buildings. Reduce as much of the symbolism to the general population, and increase the symbolism for the leaders. That's why I thought Tancredo was so stupid to talk about nuking Mecca. Mecca only appeals to the suicidal morons, so seeing it blown up isn't going to do anything for them. Destroying the government buildings in Tehran (preferably just the Mullahs' part) and Syria would send a much better message to the right people.

As soon as I wrote this, I began to sort of doubt it. But I do think it's the wrong thing to do. There really are a decent number of people in these countries who hate their leaders but feel powerless to do anything. Even if they wouldn't be moved to terrorism by the destruction of a city, I don't want them slaughtered like that. They (meaning only the good ones) are our friends.

Posted by: Popcorn at January 09, 2010 09:07 AM (OOehk) I've been thinking about this lately. I think there is a key difference. There may be a huge number of terrorist sympathizers in the Saudi government, but right now, I think the people at the very top are on our side. Make war on them and we lose that. And if they surrendered, what would change? Moreover, there are two giant elephants in the room, Russia and China. An out-and-out war against the whole middle east pretty much guarantees they turn to the those two places. I think that's what prevents us from a lot of the tougher actions. That would give two totalitarian states a huge geo-strategic advantage.

Until you make it extreemly painful for the places like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Syria to support terrorists we will continue to have terrorists.

My intent was not to limit the list to Iran and Syria, that is why I used the term "like".  But, there is a difference bwteen Iran, Syria, and Saudi Arabia. The body of "public evidence" for Saudi Arabia is that the terrorists from there are not supported by the State, whereas Syria and Iran make terrorism public policy.

I think that when a country has active terroism support by private interests though they should be forced to take action to combat those private interests.  Then if they do not we can take action against thjose proivate interests ourselves.

There is precedence for that. When Panco Villa crossed the border to attack U.S. towns we dispatched the military in an expidition against him into Mexico. A few cruiise missles launced at the Madrassas in Saudia Arabia may be required if they will do nothing.

If we built more nuclear power plants and thereby greatly reduced our dependence on Middle Eastern countries for oil, seems to me that would reduce frictions and spare everybody a lot of grief. But I could be wrong.

BTW, This windmill idea is loony. It just puts money in the pocket of the environmentalist people who own the company that makes those goofy windmills, and guess what? That company and its owners and its lobbyists are huge financial contributors to the Democrats. No surprise there. Greed is good.

But I could be wrong. Posted by: Mystery Guest at January 09, 2010 09:38 AM (ITzbJ) I think that's a very long term solution. Whether we buy oil from the middle east or not isn't really relevant. There is a global energy market that determines all energy prices. Decrease the supply of oil, and it isn't just oil prices that go up. So as long as mid-eastern oil is a significant portion of the world's energy supply, we're going to be stuck there. I don't know the numbers, but I'm a bit skeptical that Nuclear power can rapidly dwarf mid-eastern oil supplies. Maybe other people here know more though. Or maybe I'm just totally full of it and don't know what I'm talking about.

Building Nuclear Power Plants is a good idea but it would do little to reduce the use of middle eastern oil. We generate very little electricity from oil these days. (Truth in advertising I retired after 30 years in the nuclear buiness)

The use of windmills for large amounts of generation is also stupid for a large number of reasons:

1. Too expensive

2. Very few locations where it is feasible

3. On a large scale it simply will not work because the output varies greatly. If we actually ever did put out these things on a large scale it would destablize the grid.

It really is obscene. The only possible reason for setting up such an agency in the way this one is set up is to allow the Left to publicly fund a private political police force with Government money while exempting it from the rule of law governing disclosure and access.
It's an evil tactic being used by evil people for evil ends. Here's hoping someone in the UK stands up and does something about it. They're well beyond the slippery slope stage already, and they need to rapidly start climbing out of the hole.

811 Wow Florida is in a deep freeze.  Jacksonville 22 degrees, Orlando 27 degrees, Micky Mouse is freezing his butt off.

Frozen orange juice all around.

@ 820

Curious, the link is below the first vid at the top of this post.

And yes, we're getting sleet here in Orlando as I type this. First time in my 22 years here.

815 I love Orange Juice, I am seriously worrying about the trees.  Sure someone told me the crop has been picked already but what about the trees?  How badly could they be damaged by a continuous frost?  I mean screwdriver drinkers must be really worried...

Er, it's noon.

Guess Ace and the Morons got drunk last night, again.

Gabe no morning thread for us?

How about some NFL cheerleaders??

HELLO, TESTING?? ANYBODY THERE?

817 Yesterday was in the car listening to the radio.  Apparently some heritage group which the guest labeled "rich elite liberals" is fighting MA on putting giant wind turbines in the ocean off the coast.   It seems they feel it will damage their billion dollar views.  So the host said "wow, the green libs are fighting the heritage libs, how funny."

818 Kemp, wish you could post a thread.  I read every post of yours.

819 So based on Drudge's headline, am I to assume Obama lied again the other day?  It sure sounds like the buck stops with Bush and not Obama.

820 Kind of a bummer for the NFL playoffs after this weekend for those of us who like the games played outdoors.  Chance of snow for the Bengals/Jets game.  After that it's dome city in Dallas, Arizona, Minnesota and Indy.  The outdoor game after that is in San Dog.

821 Lately I've been saying to my lib/dem friends "I'm an independent cause to me, I see no difference between BO and Boosh".   OOOO do they get angry...lol

"Ace is unreasonably irate, and has a poor memory."

823 Ace should set up a site where the commenters can send him posts that they wrote.  Then when he isn't feeling well or can't write a post he can choose one of the commenter posts to let everyone know he is around but can't write a post at that time.

824 Have heard a lot of passengers say they will not fly if they are forced to endure a body scan.  Been thinking "how will that impact the airline industry, which is already on thin ice?"

826 Curious(ly), I've been thinking the same thing.  I'm really sick of this crap.

Unrelated: Finally watched the six-part, HBO miniseries, "John Adams."  Wow.  Definitely recommended.

827 Just wait until they use the body scanners at all public events like sports, plays, Disneyworld, etc.  It's only a matter of time before terrorists realize that it's much easier to blow up a bunch of families at Disneyworld or the mall than another airplane.

Friends are considering buying their season tickets.  Been in their family for eons.  However to buy the right to buy the tickets is ridiculously exorbitant.  Then the tickets have gone up a lot.  This could very well encourage some to buy a really great big screen, some lazy boy loungers and a surround sound system and to buy the season ticket option on their cable and just stay at home.  That will definitely impact the stadiums as they are paying for new stadiums with the tickets to some extent.
