Overnight Open Thread -- 9/29/2014: Corpulent RINO Edition
— Open Blogger

Good evening, 'Rons n' 'Ettes! It's been a spell since I was last permitted to darken the hallowed pages of AoSHQ. But, since your regular ONT provider purportedly has something more important to do, and I called dibs for tonight's iteration, I reckon you'll just have to swallow hard and accept whatever half-assed excuse for infotainment I manage to cobble together in the next couple of hours, or so.

Some of you may recall that I was a bartender the last time I encroached upon this otherwise estimable space. Well, thanks to a shitstorm apocalyptic proportion, I was unceremoniously relieved of those duties a little over a month ago. Since then, I've found employment in a somewhat different industry -- that is, chicken farming. I learned a lot in my first few weeks as a farmhand, first and foremost being that I'm too damned fat and out of shape to be a farmhand. Here's a fair approximation of the physical activity I typically engaged in prior to my unexpected career change.

But, after a few weeks of perseverance through searing agony, my body has adapted to the demands of the job. Yes, I'm still dog-tired at the end of the day, but I can manage a full day of carrying feed buckets the length of eight 520' chicken barns, doubling back several times in each one. And I'm doing it largely without pain. The only problem is, I'm old. And, being old, I didn't seem to be shedding the considerable beer gut I'd developed over years of tending bar. And, frankly, I'm highly skeptical of recent studies showing that the ladies quite dig men sporting the distended abdomen look.

According to a recent study commissioned to mark the DVD release of “Bad Neighbors,” starring Zac Efron and Seth Rogen, three in four British women prefer men with a bit of a belly over one rocking washboard abs when it comes to relationships.

----------

The full results of the study are here, but the basic verdict is women prefer relationships with a man who makes them feel confident, not threatened. A man with a bit of a gut is likely not as concerned with appearances as a gym rat may be. Ergo, we feel less judged.

While that may be a comforting thought, experience has taught me otherwise. You don't just stroll up to some babe at the grocery store with a John Goodman physique and expect David Beckham results -- at least not of you're a blue-collar schlub like myself. And, with that in mind, I've decided to make some minor lifestyle adjustments.

Now, let me just stipulate that I'm not angling for the washboard stomach that's all the rage these days. That doesn't strike me as a realistic goal at this point. You see, I'm a man of appetites with an unfortunate tendency toward inertia in my downtime. I'm no Glenn Reynolds; this is about as close to six pack abs as I'm likely to get anytime soon:

But, I do have reasonably good muscle tone for a dude with four-plus decades on the planet -- especially for one who's spent as much time holding down barstools as I have. And I have no plans to eliminate that [in]activity from my admittedly debauched lifestyle. But, I have made some adjustments -- like cutting back on the beer and going back to a couple of old favorites: cheap scotch and gin and tonic. For those of you who may also have a taste for cheap scotch and have yet to try it, allow me to humbly recommend Hankey Bannister.

As I said, I am a man of appetites, and I'm not keen on denying them. And, yes, that does make losing the gut a bit of a challenge. But, some years ago, I came up with a system that worked pretty well for me. Essentially, I stopped all between-meal eating and started eating less fattening foods by cutting back on bread, potatoes [my greatest weakness], and sugar. Not foregoing them completely, mind you, but eating them in smaller quantities while making an effort to eat more of the things I like that are actually pretty good for me. I do this Monday through Saturday. And then, when Sunday comes around, I eat whatever the hell I want to eat, and as much as I want of it.

Obviously, that won't work for everyone. But, it worked for me the last time I tried it, and it seems to be working for me now. But, there are other ways of dropping a few pounds that aren't tantamount to masochism. Some scientist at Cornell thinks he's come up with a few.

“One thing that happens with people who are overweight is that they often feel their situation isn’t solvable, and they are on the verge of giving up,” explains Wansink. “What we’ve found over and over is that making one small change, like eating off a smaller plate, leads to a small weight loss, and then that triggers making more changes. Within a year, a person’s lost 35 pounds without ever ‘dieting.’ That’s our goal.”

-------

“It’s so much easier to be ‘slim by design’ than by using willpower,” Wansink says. “You make one change, it’s done. Willpower is a 24/7 unending job.”

I have no idea how much weight I've lost. I don't even own a scale. I judge my weight by simply looking down at my waist from time to time, and by which holes in my belt I have to use to keep my pants up. I've cinched my belt up two holes over the past two weeks. That's probably a hundred pounds. Idunno. And all I've had to do is eat more green beans and salads, drink unsweetened tea and water (sometimes with lemon) instead of sweet tea and soft drinks with meals, and not run to the freezer for ice cream just before bedtime.

And, with a little diligence, maybe the next time I find myself on vacation in Panama City Beach, I won't be mortified at the notion of walking around shirtless on the beach. Speaking of which, here are a few shots I grabbed while I was there about a month ago:

26

My compliments sir, on a superb ONT.

Substantially agree, and am in synch with your weight loss plan.  Ours vary only in minor ways.  Works, too.  I'm on a 6 week, No Bourbon phase, in order to get that last bit of progress.

Then again, I only had to get down from 215 to 185, so I didn't have the same hurdle as you.  But, it's all the same when it has to be done.

My primary motivation, is that I'm too much the cheap bastard to buy a whole 'nuther set of clothes, in a larger size.  Health plays into it as well.  Looks?  Subjective, as always.

Do some more ONTs, sir.  The Florida photos were superb, and evocative of my visits to those coasts lo these past few months.

65 It might depend on the size of the belly, too. A couple weeks ago the disk-jockeys on one of the local radio station were discussing the study and taking calls, and a couple women called in to say that they themselves felt more comfortable with a guy with a little extra weight, because they didn't feel pressured to watch their own weight so much and because they thought it likely that a man who was not too obsessed with his appearance would be pleasanter to be around.

73 Dave Casper infamously "fumbled" the ball when being tackled, so as to advance it to his teammates. It was kicked around for some twenty yards before he recovered it in the end zone. The ball is dead at the spot of the fumble, should the original team recover it. No advancement can be achieved by the original controlling team.

77 Absolutely correct on one change making a difference. I was in charge of the Overeaters Wing at NARC Miramar years ago. The common diagnosis for overeaters was "morbid obesity due to dietary indiscretion". Push back from the damn table. Eat only what your hands clasped together will hold at each meal (basically, the size of your stomach). I can remember clearly being grossed out at hearing some of the eating stories from the patients. And, like booze, "eating blackouts". Saw the "one change" thing work for some; others just stoked garbage down the gullet like booze into a wino.

113 I had an odd experience today. I ran into an acquaintance's wife in the grocery store. We exchanged pleasantries and chatted about about neighborhood things, and then out of the blue, she asked me if I thought her husband had been acting odd lately. Well, he and I are friends, but not close friends. We'll stand around his garage or my garage every now and then, and talk about various projects, usually car things. I don't see him more than a half hour every two or three weeks. At any rate, I hadn't noticed anything. He doesn't drink, or do drugs, a real straight guy..., mid-late 50's. She says that lately, he has been a little more outspoken when in the company of others, friends, family. Occasionally making marginally rude observations, or saying things that should be left unsaid. She said that she was becoming worried about mixing with other people. Does any of this sound symptomatic of anything to any of you?

194 It's been quiet here ever since the Marines left El Toro. We had a Marine Corps field here. The Dems have sought to wipe out it's existence so much that they changed the name of the city there from El Toro to Lake Forrest. It is now the Great Park. And it's not so great. We also had the LTA base in Tustin, you know, for blimps. They used it for helos before they shut it down. Those hangers are the largest wooden structures on the west coast. My grandfather was hurt while building them, fell off but got saved by his saftey line. He wore a truss the rest of his life. His company also helped build Disneyland, we got free passes when I was a kid in 62 and went for the first time.

He will get elected no matter what but I wouldn't be surprised to see him resign after the elections and work with his buddy Kasich to find a suitable replacement. The Canter loss rattled a lot of cages, as it should have. In the meantime, my plan is to enjoy my family, ballooning and good scotch. It's to dark to be ballooning, my wife is asleep on the couch and I have a glass of Abalour A'bunadh, single cask, 61% sent directly from Scotland. Life is good. For my parents it was administered by a psych nurse.

294 "Did you see that they are actively trying to spread the rumor that whites invented ebola?"

If you have lived anywhere near any large concentration of urban African-Americans during the last thirty years, you will have heard the line that whites invented HIV to "depopulate Africa and steal its resources". It's a constant background theme.

The fact that whites have poured HIV drugs into Africa by the metric ton, giving them away, must have been, um, well, geez, I dunno, some sort of diabolically cunning misdirection by Whitey.

Oh! Wait! I've got it. The real germ warfare agent invented by whites is Ebola. HIV was just the _excuse_ to have white Western doctors running around administering lethal "medicine" to the locals.

301 So, I'm now officially an ex-customer for Intuit. Got AceMoney -- minutes later I'd ported all my Quicken info into it (took four tries, but it was still less than 20 minutes), 10 minutes after that I had it downloading transactions. Still haven't set up all the accounts for transaction downloads.....because....

I had such a huge feeling of relief when stuff started working. I guess I was a lot more stressed about it than I had realized -- but I've been getting increasingly nervous. They turned the updates off in June, and I gave 'em a month to turn 'em on again.....but after July, the fiancee and I have been traveling and I hadn't been able to spend the time to fix things. So, I'd been feeling increasingly blind as to whether stuff was going off track.

And every time I saw a news story on credit-card fraud, I kept thinking "how can I keep an eye on all this STUFF?!?!?" Now, I can just settle in to my usual routines of lazily keeping an eye on what I see after an update.

It wouldn't surprise me unduly to find that the Feds were behind this dickish move -- but whether Intuit thought of it on their own or were forced into it, I never want to hear from them again.

353 Did you see that they are actively trying to spread the rumor that whites invented ebola? By "they" you mean Africans? This from the same folks who believe raping a virgin will cure them of AIDS? Rosie O'Donnell would be considered a brilliant intellect over there. Posted by: puddleglum The KGB started that rumor. No really. After the USSR fell, one of the insiders in the KGB admitted it. That still hasn't stopped the madness, because some people want to believe stuff like that.

But even beyond that:

Students can't give affirmative consent if they've been drinking. So ANY encounter involving both parties consuming alcohol, not that that ever happens in a college situation, pretty much is an open door to a rape prosecution.

Hey, Commiefornia college dudes? Date townie girls. Stay way clear of your female classmates.

Posted by: Bossy Conservative riding the comfy chair at September 29, 2014 11:51 PM (+1T7c) I was at the range once a while back with a couple people including the very tiny, very cute Asian chick who had found a wonderful surgeon. The shirt she was wearing was a little too open, but the odds seemed very slight. Uh huh. She's using my S&W .40 and shell goes right down the front of her shirt to nestle between her most glorious bosums. She screamed and immediately started to turn for help, while she bent over at the waist, pulled the "neckband" of the shirt even further away from her body and shook the hell out of her shirt. I gallantly stepped for, grabbed the gun and took it away from her, although getting a good look. Twas a good day at the range.

362 Best way to lose weight is get a little bit more exercise (walk more, by parking further away, taking stairs instead of elevator, etc) and cut something out of your diet, such as sody pop or candy. Just one thing, pick the thing you're eating or drinking too much of and stop, try something else. It sucks for a little bit, then you will find you actually like the alternative. Carbonated drinks are the biggest culprit. Just drink ice cold filtered water. It will taste bland at first but you'll soon find it tastes like heaven and that cola tastes like overpowering syrup. Easy way to knock off pounds, slowly, and in a healthy way.

427 Quitting drinking worked for me. Was losing 2#/week doing nothing else. Lost about 50# this year alone. High protein/low carb is also key. On CNN saw this advice which a woman used to drop 200+lbs.
1. Eat eight oz food every three hours.
2. No sugary drinks.
3. Do not skip meals.
4. Don't tell anyone what you're doing.

BTW, I personally count booze as a sugary drink.

He's right to be upset, but what I told him was true at the time, or at least it wasn't codified differently (They've changed the laws and regulations so many times, and to this day if you go to the IRS website it says that buying a health insurance plan directly from an insurance company will meet minimum essential benefits requirement. It won't, but that's on CMS), and he doesn't want to take advantage of the easy hardship exemption that anyone can get (*bitter laugh* Maybe I should start spamming the web with banner ads "This one weird trick can allow you to avoid the Obamacare tax!"). I may sit around here and make fart jokes like everyone else, and anyone who reads one of my Swiftian garden threads knows that "weird" Dave may not be a misnomer, but I do take a great deal of pride in my professional acumen. All due humility aside, when it comes to this shit I am the pro from Dover. I looked him right in the eye and apologized, told him I had made a professional mistake. I still feel like shit though.

463 Incidentally, WeirdDave, you've mentioned that you know several military men. Ask yourself, how often does it happen in a war that some commander thinks, "I can take that hill with 200 men" in the morning, and finds that night that 300 of his men lie bleeding in the fields around it -- while the enemy still holds?

And yet, those commanders can rise the next morning and set themselves once more against the enemy -- even as many they had lead before will not see that day. They do this by being resolute, by keeping their minds focused on higher principles, and by being canny-sons-of-bitches that learn from their mistakes.

473 So I have concluded once again that my long-held, most-basic premise is correct:  I am a goofy fucker.

For some reason I find it interesting to try to follow the stats arguments at ClimateAudit.

I don't actually know shit about stats.  I had one engineering science class with a prof that decided it was reasonable to give us a 15-week stats text in 5 weeks so he could cover 2 other topics that semester.  So I did all the work, got a passing grade, and couldn't remember shit about 2 weeks later.

The only use I got out of the class was a larger vocabulary for using stats terms as punchlines to impromptu jokes.

But for some reason, even if all that stuff at ClimateAudit is flying over my head a supersonic speeds I find their arguing about the minutiae to be fascinating.

Go figger.  Goofy fuckers do what goofy fuckers do.

486 On another topic, I'm listening to (of all things) Scritti Politti doing "The World You Understand (Is Over + Over + Over)" [sorry, no YouTube available] -- and the very happy little pop piece has a chorus that goes: "I'll tell you who we are / Heloise and Abelard".....

And it just cracks me up [which is why I play it].

Green Gartside is obviously using "Heloise and Abelard" as a shorthand for "a deeply held -- but forbidden -- love.....whose worth showed the shallowness of the time." Except: (1) Abelard seduced Heloise when she was 17 and he was 36 [approx]; (2) She gave birth to a son -- who, weirdly, disappears from history despite a very distinctive name; (3) Abelard attempted to appease Heloise's legal guardian with a secret marriage -- which was then repudiated when it became public; (4) After the repudiation, her guardian's men broke into Abelard's lodgings and castrated him; (5) on his way to a monastery as a eunuch, Abelard insisted that Heloise be shipped off to a nunnery for the rest of her life.

And, yet, Heloise and Abelard exchanged correspondence regarding theological matters afterwards.

Y'know, if I didn't understand how sacred their love was, I might think this was a couple of lust-crazed youngsters spurning the wisdom of their culture and suffering the consequences.....

491 Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword....wait there's even more Now what if i told you there was a simple Wordpress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That's right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin
