Overnight Open Thread-Weak Sauce Edition [CDR M]
— Open Blogger

Ah yes, the evolution of a Liberal. Scary.

Evenin' all. It's time for the ONT.

This was a pretty good read last night. Chicks With Guns.

Pop quiz: Name one accessory that grandmothers, moms, girls, wealthy socialites, middle-class females and low-income women might be likely to own — and cherish — all across America.

If you answered “a gun,” you’d be correct.

Based on polling research and gun-sale statistics, an estimated 15 million to 20 million women in the United States own their own firearms.

I can't believe Pamela (picture #7 in the slideshow) has a .454 Casull. That's some heavy duty firepower there. Jersey Girls Don't Pump Gas

The stoopid is strong with these ladies. I hated NOT being able to pump my own gas when I passed through Oregon and New Jersey. In Sicily, they'd rip you off if you weren't paying attention. They'd pretend to be filling up your tank when they were actually filling up a container.

Redneck Repairs

Don't try some of these at home. Ah, who am I kidding? I guarantee you we all have done something like these. Here are 25 Example Of Redneck Ingenuity.

The Worst Products For Men

There are some strange products out there for men. I had no idea that there was even a market for a chest hair toupee. Seriously. WTF? I guess it's better than going the Eric Cartman route as he did with Scott Tenorman's pubes to make a beard. Here are The 10 Worst Products For Men. Scary.

While some men shave or laser their chest to achieve a smooth, hairless look, other, naturally smooth chested men, pine for a manly carpet of chair. For these men, the chest hair toupee was invented. Available in black, brown, or gray, these chest pieces are made of real human hair. How do you even apply this thing? Glue? Tape? At any rate it is perfect for its target audience: middle-age men who like to wear halfway unbuttoned Hawaiian shirts and yet are lacking the tuft of hair sticking out that is necessary to complement their gold chain necklaces.

The Good, The Bad, And Ugly

This came out a few years ago but it's still pretty cool. It is a remix of Ennio Morricone's The Ectasy Of Gold.

Not A Good First Date

Ouch. Man Shoots Self On First-Date. Somebody was playin' with their gun in the car when they should've been playin' around with their date. That would've ended with a happy ending I'm sure.

A-10 Doin' What It Does Best

Pretty riveting video from an A-10 supporting some US troops on the ground in what sounds like a very heavy firefight.

It’s common to be annoyed about people who are famous who don’t deserve to be. They’re not hard to find, are they, Tori S.?

It’s less common to be annoyed about finding that people whom you regard as having earned their fame, aren’t as well-known as you thought and assumed they were.

Which is my way of introducing an article in a Brit paper that refers to the director of the upcoming Avengers movie, which I will see in the theater no matter what any reviewer says, as “Joss Wheldon.”

http://tinyurl.com/6jncz4l

Do the Brits not know about Buffy and Angel and Firefly? Do they unaccountably fail to appreciate the majesty that is Joss Whedon’s oevre?

Charlotte police said the couple returned to the man's car after eating Tuesday at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse on Fairview Road and the man's gun, which was in the car, somehow went off and shot the man, The Charlotte Observer reported Wednesday.

I've heard about figuratively shooting yourself in the foot on a first date, but this ridiculous!  I doubt the gun "went off" on its own.  Given that women covet guns, as per the Chicks with Guns story, the fool was probably waiving his piece around in a vain attempt to impress his date when he accidentally pulled the trigger.

Too bad the wound wasn't higher on his leg, thus preventing transfer of his poor gun safety techniques to the next generation.  And if I was his date, he wouldn't be getting another one after that lame stunt.

It was quite a shock for a Texas gal; my bet is that the station operators have it in state regulations so that they can charge more to their customers....

A former Costa Mesa resident who killed her husband and cooked and ate parts of his body nearly 20 years ago is scheduled to appear before a parole board. Omaima Aree Nelson is seeking early release from her sentence of 27 years to life for murdering William E. Nelson, 56, over Thanksgiving weekend in 1991.

"This is probably one of the most egregious mutilations we've ever had,"  Senior Deputy Dist. Atty. Randy Pawloski, who prosecuted the case, told the Daily Pilot. "It is one of the most gruesome and notorious crimes ever committed in Orange County."

The hearing for Nelson, an Egyptian model who immigrated to the U.S. in 1986, is scheduled for Wednesday at Chowchilla State Prison in Central California, where she's incarcerated.

Nelson was in her 20s when she killed her husband three decades her senior and dismembered and cooked parts of his body in their Costa Mesa apartment. The couple had been married about a month.

No, just continue to call me the God of War.  .  Seriously, the only "real" Drs out there are the MDs - they truly deserve that honorific.

86 Kratos are the leaves changing yet in your area? Or is it too early.

It's still too early. The leaves start changing by mid-October, normally.  The colors should be impressive this year with all the rain we got, providing the trees didn't suffer too much from the excessive rain.

99 yeah gas pumping is stupid, especially at the truck stop type gas stations on busy interstate intersections.  you have to wait to get your gas pumped because it's a busy place and the service is no better than if you had done it yourself.  every once in a long while you would encounter someone who would actually do a good job and clean your windshield or something, but that was almost never.

and then of course to pay for it you have to hand your card over to the gas pump guy...

Too much simplification is bad.  It's about balance - you want enough information to get your audience to speed so that they realize and understand the point and significance of your work, but not so much that you go off on unneeded tangents.  Y-not, who has a prodigious amount of experience reading though primary publications, grants, and proposals, mentioned a while ago that there is a tenancy of younger scientists to over-state their work and make it too "wordy".

135 @110 Most are too young to remember why the passing of pump-jockey job was something to lament, so this will be meaningless. Just the same, those were before mini-wage, so stations were overstaffed. Most days, the kids didn't stay busy pumping gas, so the helped the mechanic. That's right, gas stations had mechanics, and that's how a punk kid would learn how to work on cars. If a guy applied himself, he could make a career of that.

Guy a mile away died the other day; he learned wrenching like that, and owned his own station when he was 20, in 1967. Spent 40 years just wallowing in the car life, hundreds of friends, nice car collection, solid citizen, retired before he was 60. Luck of the draw, he died young.

Now, if you think you want to be a mechanic, you have to do well enough in high school to get into a tech program at CC, and then you're a wage-slave to Mr. Goodwrench, running codes. That' what we lost when we started pumping our own gas.

Not my mechanic, though. He runs a hot-rod shop with his dad. High school seriously interfered with his education, so he quit. Until my kid got into the advanced part of computer engineering, my mechanic was the best practical programmer I knew. As long as internal combustion stays legal, he has a career. He does have trouble finding reliable employees, though. The tech-school guys can't cut it, and kids from the neighborhood are only educable until they discover the pipe. Where do they get on the pipe? At school, naturally. He's a little bitter about that.

One of the best cars I ever owned was an 82 Dodge Rampage (shut up). I paid 50 bucks for it because the Dodge mechanics couldn't diagnose a bad pick-up coil. It didn't have an OBD-II port, you see, so the computer couldn't run a diagnostic on it and tell them what was wrong with it.

I figured it out with a multimeter. My grand-daddy was a heavy equipment Seabee in Dubya Dubya Eye Eye and taught my dad everything. Then he decided he didn't want his kids to be Sailors or mechanics, so my uncle grew up not knowing how to change his own oil.

I'm sure I was a great disappointment to my grand-daddy, God rest his soul.

172 When I lived in NJ, I remember twice when I drove long distance and stopped for gas in VA, and sat there wondering why no one was coming out to pump my gas.

Yes, they were probably pointing at the Jersey plates and laughing, I would too

173 132 Kaykaing in Charlotte Harbor over the summer. 2 A-10s come out of I guess Charlotte County airport and fly over us. I'm yelling and waving my paddle; don't they turn around and come back, about 80 feet off the deck, and give me a wing waggle, I almost wet myself it was so cool.

Posted by: USS Diversity at September 29, 2011 10:53 PM (aD5Kx)

that's coolness right there.  We live just east of Fort Carson, and we get myriad traffic between there, the academy and Peterson.  F-22s, the occasional F-18 with an IFE, U/MH-60s, boatloads of C-130s loaded with jumpers, a few V-22s.

I still miss the sound of an F-4 taking off though...

185 @151, In my day, sonny, car diagnostic tools were for men. Analyzers had vacuum tubes in them. You needed a dwell meter to set the dual points on a Mallory. And they'd hum when you turned them on, heh. The guys setting points and tuning carbs were working on the edge of what the technology would support, just like now, except that, electricity still being as big a mystery to us as it was to Franklin, we hide it inside a non-serviceable black box so as not to be embarrassed by our own deliberate ignorance. Points-and-carb guys with slide rules and cigarettes landed on the moon ISTR; we, with the god-particle in hand, are playing WOW in mom's basement, sweating the Iranian Navy.

So one day in '82 I was using dad's antique impulse-power timing light (ran off the spark plug jolt--it was antique when he got it) to set my racing Alfa; the battery was charging hard, a spark struck off the lead wire, and the sumbitch blew up in my face. Worst part, a little piece of battery case plastic flew under the fuel injector drive belt and slipped one, just one, cog. After I got my vision back, I couldn't get the car to start for the longest time.

I've remained a little leery of hydrogen fuel. It does burn clean, though.

I am pleased to announce that the word (?) SCoaMF was used for the first time in a comment at the Seattle Times tonight.  It was at this story:  http://tinyurl.com/68c8h6e  And I said this:

Ha, ha, ha. All of you very silly people who thought Congress was going to rescue you with their banking and finance reform law, guess what? The bank bases its business on making a certain amount of money. Congress said they could no longer charge Fee A, which was part of their business plan. Therefore the banks will now charge Fee B. This was absolutely inevitable and I take a great deal of pleasure in telling foolish progressive "I told you so."

This was completely and absolutely inevitable. Congress doesn't understand a single solitary thing about economics or business - this is what comes from letting lawyers make the rules. They have no clue about how business works and Congresscritters mostly think that all charges made by business are purely arbitrary and capricious.

Don't blame BofA for this. This extra fee was brought to you by the Congress of the
United States of America and the SCoaMF who signed the bill into law.

So far, I don't think anyone has looked it up because no one's head has appeared to explode but I am nevertheless proud to have played a tiny role in spreading the word.

You may now resume regular programming as I have to go to bed.

Tonight I learned of the passing of a dear friend of many years. A man who was a second Dad to me, ( a humble doggie).

Please say a prayer for the family of a China Marine, Loren (Cap) Varvais.

Thanks internet friends, God Bless.

Prayer said. May your friend be blessed and enter into the invisible Corps of Heaven, under the command of Righteousness Itself. He will always be young and never suffer another moment of pain or weakness, as we know it in this life.

I had a man like raise me.

I am so sorry for your loss. Over 20 years hasnt filled the hole he left in my world by his passing.

How do you think ace feels about Andrew trying to poach his commenters?

Personally, I think ace appreciates the visit and the attention, but is kinda leery of loosing commenters.

But, as someone upstream pointed out, if Andrew really wanted a bunch of morons hanging arround, he'd have to open up / remove his comment registration system.

Dear Mr. Breitbart,

Did you receive my c.v. yet?

I comment here regularly and at times I use compound sentence structure with a variant of topical urban like references; the urban references have legitimized my blog cred.

Just last week I incorporated the term "G" when referencing one of the co-bloggers here. I said something to the effect like, "hey G, that was fly."

I look forward to joining your commenter team.

Sincerely,

Ace is so far just fielding offers from outside firms and the comment 'open blog' format while being discussed will remain in tact however, there is some discussion by one of the lawyers that comments should be limited to no more than 4 metro cycles per impression or 4 MCPI or 13 characters per week per comment.

There has been some additional discussion of creating a blog/character bank where character limits could be traded and carried over each quarter.

All inquiries should be limited to 13 characters and e-mailed.

Racial humor, done well, is some of the best.

But it is real tough to keep it from becoming just simply offensive to the race being targeted.

A movie that had good racial humor was "Undercover Brother".

Laughed my ass off at it, even when it was poking fun at me and my kind.

Posted by: ed at September 30, 2011 12:42 AM (Y2WVW)

Racial humor is fine; outright racism is not. I'm inclined to give the benefit of a doubt quite some ways, depending on facts and circumstances......but some signs are pretty distinct.

In the case I commented on, you have some dialect and a name.....but it would really only be understood by someone who took the time to watch the series, and was therefore unlikely to be full of unreasoning hatred.

On the flip side, I've seen someone casually comment about his sister dating someone in a way that was incredibly repulsive.

452 the ghosts are watching you fap. don't think with your dicks, really, you aren't going to get any,not even a hand job.

You have no idea how much worse the world would be if we didn't think with our dicks.

The caveman who invented fire?  Know what his first thought was?  "This is so totally getting me laid."

Think Columbus wasn't thinking with his dick when he set off and accidentally discovered America?  Hell yes he was- he wanted to be rich, a motivation driven primarily by the prospect of some fine poontang.

Forget all about sports and luxury cars- everyone would be driving a Camry, assuming anyone bothered to invent cars in the first place.

In fact, I'm not sure the human race would've even made it at all.  How many men would bother putting up with women long enough to raise children if they at some point weren't being led around by Mr. Happy?

470 SCOAMF says we've gone soft. Click the link if you want to vomit. http://tinyurl.com/5txcg9x Just saw that on NRO from Jonah Goldberg. Obama speaking in Orlando: “This is a great great country that had gotten a little soft and we didn’t have that same competitive edge that we needed over the last couple of decades,” Mr. Obama said in response to a question about the country’s economic future. “We need to get back on track.” So that's it. President Hard As Nails has let the truth slip. We've gone soft. Any appropriate response to this... thing in a sack of pestilient skin... would earn me the instant banhammer. Just think about where this noxious thing with threadbare carpet for hair and sailcloth for ears arose and where it worshipped. Think about what this thing has done all its life at public expense, from aggrandizing personal excess to excess in public lawmaking and profligacy. If Republicans planning campaigns and in Congress cannot take this quote and use it like a shoe on a cockroach, they need to consider another line of work

551 I like Cain but his 9-9-9 plan is a no-go.  He proposes implementing a consumption tax on top of our existing income tax structure.  That is, a NEW avenue of tax revenue on top of the already existing structure.  That is NOT a solution, its a disaster.  Either our existing code w/lower tax rates (which is half assed bullshit, imo) OR amend the Const. to repeal the 16th Amendment (i.e. existing tax code) and implement a consumption tax.  One or the other but hell no, no way both!

557 I agree Viking. Repeal of 16 should be part of the plan, but I feel like it's early enough for him to rectify that. His plan isn't awful, it's a little worrisome because 9-9-9 would be the base plan. Maybe we could tie it to state's ratification for any changes? I don't know... I *like* it on its surface, but how it might be twisted in future admins is troublesome.

559 I wonder if anybody worked out the 9-9-9 plan math wise, to see how good it is. He says part of it is dropping the income tax down to 9%, so with a reduction that large does it offset a 9% consumption tax enough? It almost seems like it should by a good margin, because even right now not buying shit you lose a good chunk of the income right off the bat to income taxes every week. My only worry is what happens if we get another marxist cock holster like obama sometime in the future, whats to keep them from turning it into a 25-25-25 plan. It would need major major safeguards.

You got it, that's exactly the problem.  Though I am also disturbed by the idea that a conservative would propose a new tax revenue stream without the condition of rescinding the existing one.

Once its in place, there's no ridding ourselves of it for another 100 years, presuming we'd last that long with it.  Its 9-9-9 today and 15-15-15 tomorrow, etc.

573 I lean towards the fair tax just because instituting a new tax (VAT) scares the hell out of me for the future. I completely get the libertarian argument about only having a VAT tax and no income tax, I just don't trust our politicians to push for both after they get a new one.

Posted by: Johnny (John E.) at September 29, 2011 10:22 PM (nRTou)

574 I really suck at math, but thinking of it this way. A 9% consumption tax is probably like having a straight 15-18% sales tax when you couple that ontop of state sales tax. But lets say you make 100K a year, you are losing "around" 30K by the end of the year in taxes. A consumption tax on a new car is $900 per every 10K of the cost of car, so thats about $2700 on a $30,000 car. Taking a 9% income tax in the 9-9-9 plan, a person making 100K would bring home 91K, which saves about 21K. In order to piss away the saved 21K on consumption tax you would have to buy 7-8 new cars in one year . Not sure if any of this makes sense, but it seems like you would save a shitload of money.

Correct.  So long as the rate remains at 9-9-9.  It will be mandated by statute, not Const. Amend.  Therefore, Congress may change those rates, just like they discuss the current rates today.  Do you believe that 9% will somehow become a sacrosanct, never to be touched rate?

Procedure rules.  Being a lawyer (ducks) I can assure you that procedure is the winning hand.  The difference between statute and Const. Amend. is night and day.  A statute can be amended tomorrow with little difficulty.  A Const. Amend. is a tall order.

Posted by: viking at September 29, 2011 10:34 PM (OZymZ)

582 123 Sounds like a strength to me. Too much simplification is bad. It's about balance - you want enough information to get your audience to speed so that they realize and understand the point and significance of your work, but not so much that you go off on unneeded tangents. Y-not, who has a prodigious amount of experience reading though primary publications, grants, and proposals, mentioned a while ago that there is a tenancy of younger scientists to over-state their work and make it too "wordy". yeah well my ideas of a major safeguard would be to make it a constitutional amendment. It just wouldn't work any other way because it IS a new avenue of tax revenue that would get totally abused. Sounds great on paper, but without a safeguard its just like handing a robber a 3rd gun to shoot you with. I was more curious to how big a savings it would be IF it had a safeguard..

Nope.  9% personal income tax (existing code), 9% corporate income tax (existing code), 9% new consumption tax.  9-9-9.

So he keeps the existing code, just lowers it to 9%?  The beast remains, we're just supposed to believe it will eat less. well maybe if every dem was boiled off into space it may work, but as long as even one fucking remains to roam the earth that plan is suicide.

Exactly, only even a little worse cause there would be a new revenue stream on top . . .the national sales tax/consumption tax.  I can see them f'ing the next several generations with "debates" over whether to raise the consumption or personal /corporate tax at what rat, blah, blah, blah (hahaha!)

Posted by: viking at September 29, 2011 11:04 PM (OZymZ)

604 well my thinking is as long as you got entitlement mentality mofos in this country you'll never see a fair tax or consumption tax, because their idea of fair is to live for free and let other saps pay for it. Them having to shell out an extra  9% sales tax would be kryptonite  to them, and the ass sucking dems would spin it that way. Media matters is already on the "it will screw the poor" angle.

The good news there, Berserker, most of those tools don't even know where their polling places are or what day voting is happening.  Without a HIGHLY motivated base to go out and collect them, those people just don't get to the polls.  Black Americans are 12-13 % of the population.  A good deal of them are going to peel of to the Republicans this cycle (I believe).
