Overnight Open Thread-Gladiator Edition [CDR M]
— Open Blogger

Well, my moron friends, this is my last guest ONT host gig. It has been a pleasure and an honor to have served my fellow morons in this capacity. It's harder than you think but fun nonetheless. I want to thank Ace and Maet for giving me this opportunity. That shock collar you made us wear to prevent us from posting naughty things is damn strong though! Hopefully, myself and the other scab-bloggers kept you enthralled and if not, well, I was gonna write something up but figured I'd let my man Russell Crowe address you.

I keed, I keed! On with the ONT! Online Gaming
Now, those of you who did not participate in the ONT last night missed out on the Moron Penguin Home Run Derby. I present to you the opportunity to hit a penguin with a big spiked club and see who can hit it the furthest. So far, ChemJeff has the longest DOCUMENTED shot of 1157.2 feet.

Heh. Here's a list of the Top 10 Video Games you'll never see. I'm sure we could think of few new ideas for this list.

Movie Quotes
Whew! So much was made of the fact that not one movie quote from the movie Tombstone was included in that video of 100 greatest hollywood quotes on the ONT the other night that I had to include this little montage in this ONT.

Now in keeping with the movie theme right now, it's always fun to review some the 100 Greatest movie insults of all time.

Fine Art of the Day

Since it is Black Friday, I figured I may as well throw up the greatest Golf Shot of All Time by someone wearing black. You didn't really think I would talk about shopping did you?

Of course, if you want this golf outfit, it would seem that this outfit is still available.

OK, speaking of shopping, here is the latest price on Amazon for StarCraft 2

IMPORTANT FOOD ALERT!!!
Gentlemen, you might want to have another slice of that scrumptious pumpkin pie or at least smell it. It would seem that it increases median penile blood flow by 40%. One caveat. You need lavender mixed in with that pumpkin scent. Here's the full report.

Here's Nine Ways to Use Leftover Turkey.

The Mother of all Thanksgiving Concoctions!

How many of you made this Thanksgiving Meal? The TurBaconEpic is it's name. It's a 20lb pig stuffed with a 8lb turkey, a 6lb duck, a 4lb chicken, a cornish hen, a quail, bacon croissant stuffing (WTH?), and 10 lbs of bacon wrapped around all the layers. Hmmm, hmmm. 79,046 calories and 6,892 grams of food coma inducing fat.

Tales of the ER

Several of the news outlets in my area re-printed essentially the exact same AP article about how people were out in force for Black Friday deals and that they have more money to spend this year so are spending more etc. Which, in the bizarro world we live in I take to mean that the stores didn't actually do as well as hoped today.

I don't understand reality anymore.

111

What was their explanation for this, along with the vineyards in Greenland and the Vikings able to cross the Atlantic?

My understanding has been that the best hypothesis involves the NAO getting 'stuck' in a semi-persistant positive state for an extended period of time, combined with the AMOC being stronger than normal.

When the pattern reversed, the opposite happened (the so-called "Little Ice Age" - although I believe volcanic activity also played into that - the so called "year without a summer" in the northeast & the reports of frost in the summer down to the Chesapeake Bay & such).

Coincidentally, the NAO has been somewhat more positive than normal during this "massive" warming of the past few decades, although there is some indication that it is entering a more negative phase.

Of course the NAO cycles don't tend to be "locked in" events. And the NAO is far more determinant of weather patterns in the Northern Hemisphere in winter than it is summer. (the medieval warm period wasn't actually "warm", it just was mild enough to allow vegetation & crops to survive in places they no longer do).

But, I doubt Mother Nature is through bitch slapping us yet, they say this winter is going to suck like a, well make your own damn analogy you pervert.

I think the next 7-14 days will be colder than normal for most places east of the Rockies. The NAO has really tanked and the Ensemble models show it taking about that length of time for it to get back into neutral territory.

I do think the worst blast of cold air will be this one for most areas. There is a secondary shot coming next week but the models don't show it being as cold as this one.

However, this particular pattern (the current one but not what is forecasted for the winter at large) tend to push the coldest air down into the central & eastern US. I don't think you'll see it end up quite as bad as you dealt with the past few days. Won't be warm. But it's never warm in Seattle in the winter so heh.

That would not account for LA, though, PGiS.  My neighbor was all over the mall stores at 3:00 am and said she never had a line at the cash register either.  Although she did see a line around the block at Best Buy an hour before they opened.

So far they haven't mentioned anything really that bad. Last year some girl in Woodbridge got trampled to death at a Wal-Mart. Granted these are the same people who beat the shit out of each other when the state had a surplus laptop sale a few years back.

as I recall - Wal Mart, being the efficient store they are, did not allow the woman's untimely demise to interrupt the shopping expereince!

In the late 70s, Cincy had these huge Ice Storms that put several inches of ice on all the roads. In late March or April they had to send earthmoving equipment to crack it off the streets and throw it onto the verge, since it wasn't melting even though the air temp was in the 40s. 219 I'm proud to say I did absolutely no shopping today at all. I'm a little tired of the retailers trying to guilt us into buying stuff like it's our patriotic duty to stimulate the economy or something.

Every year we get the same shit from them: the consumers aren't buying as much as they should be (translation: as much as we want them to). It's all the fault of: Bush/Climate Change/The Internet/Bears/Jews.

Here's a clue for retailers. Maybe people would buy more stuff if you weren't selling crap. And if your stores weren't laid out like some kind of psychology experiment. And if everything didn't cost so fucking much. Maybe I didn't buy my kids genuine Harry Potter vibrating broomsticks because I don't like the idea of giving them Satanic pedophile sex toys.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not some Adbusters hipster sneering at "consumerism." I'm just tired of retailers acting like their problems are anybody's fault but their own.

Ouch. I suppose it's the weather pattern. To get a prolonged ice event here (and they rarely are prolonged..) you basically have low pressure to your southwest and CAD (cold air damming) with a high over New England - generally over the Gulf of Maine. That pushes cold air over the surface as warmer (moist) air overruns it to the east of the low.

But things don't remain static. There's usually a warm front nearby and it either clears the area and the temperature shoots up 20 degrees before the next cold front comes through...or the low (progessing west to east) moves in such a direction that the moisture is short lived anyway.

I actaully can't fathom that amount of ice.

I do recall seeing piles of snow so high last year that driving was an uber pain in the ass. I mean this honestly was the worst winter I can remember. Not as far as temperature but as far as snow. Ugg. I took pictures of some of the areas figuring it's not something (hopefully) that will be seen again soon.

The first night after the storm was over I got stuck twice on the way home - both by cars who had gotten stuck in the snow and blocked traffic. That's after one of the most hellish mornings I can remember.

*shiver*

make sure you keep your receipt, 360 is not a system you want to buy used as it's easy to burn the system out and then wrap it in a towel with it on to get it to work so you can trade it in. Personally, play it and if you like it, take it back and spend the extra for new console (only $100 more for the basic one for $200 for the 250 gig hard drive package)

283 Ok, so I know this is an ONT and all, but I've been thinking through the following through my second thanksgiving food orgy today, and I'd like to see what people think...

One of the biggest problems we face in cutting the budget is that left has managed to create a working majority of interest for every stupid line item in the budget from CPB to mohair subsidies. Essentially, the people getting the $$$ aren't going to abide by it going away and the much larger number of people paying $ in taxes don't care enough.

The solution to this is to nominally find some way to force the groups feeding at the trough to fight each other for dollars instead of combing to rip off taxpayers and their grandchildren. But this is hard...the left knows what is at stake, and this is why you see thinks like union goons fighting for environmental laws...

So, let's try something different...let's try localization.

Some parts of the federal government can't be localized - the DoD, the Treasury, etc, but a lot can.  Let's give individual states the ability to choose, in two year blocks, which federal "services" they want and then send the states the bill for them.

Iowa may want the Agriculture Dept. New York may want HUD, MA may want the CPB. Well, fine, let them pay for it.

Suddenly there is a much smaller distance between paying for the services and getting them. Liberal states may indeed choose many such expensive programs and try to tax their way to prosperity. Moderate states will get to see up close and personal how much these programs are costing them and make a rational decision instead of "saving Big Bird". And conservative states can enjoy welcoming all the jobs fleeing the liberal states.

Further, this lessens the room for new deficit spending. Instead of a federal boondoggle like Obamacare adding trillions to the debt, states would have to pay up front for them...and they can't print their own money...

Resident Evil 5. When I was younger they were my favorite games. They've really changed the format. It used to be about strategy as much as shooting, not its more of a shooting game. Crysis really hurt the genre. It's the only game I've ever seen that brought top of the line equipment to its knees. (ok ok there were older ones back int eh day). But the thing is, even as the hardware improved, the performance remained shitty. The Crysis folks will tell you that's because of how futuristic it is (it has a DirectX 10 pathway you know!!1) but even in DX9 legacy mode the perforamance was abyssmal. At some point the answer becomes: shitty coding.

They also built one of the more assinine multiplayer architectures I've ever seen someone throw together.

Alot of people figured "Why bother" at this point.

However, the landmines can give you enormous bonus momentum. So I think the optimal angle is actually lower - perhaps as low as you can get and get over the initial barrier...

#333  Resident Evil 5. When I was younger they were my favorite games. They've really changed the format. It used to be about strategy as much as shooting, not its more of a shooting game. You don't really have to conserve ammo, get a bunch of pass keys, solve puzzles, etc. You just kinda go through each stage with a partner shooting zombies.

Isn't RE5 basically RE4 with different characters, different location, and some new weapons?

So far it's similar, yeah. However there is less wandering around. There is a confined area you stay in until you pass to the next stage. It's nothing at all like RE 1, 2, or 3 where you can wonder everywhere for hours trying to figure out what you're supposed to do. I remember RE1 took me about 40-50 hours to beat.   I think I may have this one finished by 4 am or so. I plan on going back in about 10 minutes.

also the weapons are different in that you find gold or money when fighting and you can buy weapons at the end of stages or upgrade aspects of your weapons.

348 The answer to the core question dates back to the P4 and rather than elaborate I will just say Intel got burned & went in a different direction. They did not believe with the new direction that higher clock speeds would be viable so they went with parrellelism & AMD, which had never had much success with clock speed ever because of its tight pipeline structure - followed.

Chris, how did Intel get burned?  are you not allowed to say?

Craig Barrett will haunt me if I do! Nah. I just figured ya'll didn't want a long elaborate explanation...

How familiar are you with the happenings in microprocessor technology over the last 10 years? (not a dickhead question btw just trying to develop a structure of the paragraph(s) in my head)..

Intel's entire premise going into 2000 was clock speed clock speed clock speed. They "lost" the battle to be "first" to 1GHz (remember that?? seems like forever..) and that really irritated the hell out of them. The new architecture (which was the backend to the Pentium 4) was dubbed "NetBurst". It had an exceptionally (radically) long pipeline which allowed it to scale further - the first one was 1.4GHz iirc whereas the fastest chips of the time were around 1GHz or slightly over (Intel had actually had to pull the 1.13 Coppermine due to thermal issues).

A large pipeline has benefits & drawbacks. (again why this would be a logner paragraph). All things being equal & perfect longer = faster MHz = faster performance but only if the pipeline can be kept "filled" and there are no errors (processors "guess" the next steps in instruction process - a technique known as branch prediction) If a) the pipeline is not fully filled or b) there is an error or "miss", the process gets repeated.

If pipeline a is 10 stages and pipeline b is 20 stages, then pipeline b will be faster when everything is optimal because it scales further. But if it misses, it will take twice as long to "redo" whatever it was doing because there are 10 more stages. (each stage does less work something referred to as instructions per clock - how efficient the processor is).

Intel thought it could counteract this by going stratospheric in clock speed and would have the added benefit of being able to say OUR PROCESSOR IS 2358907294567 GHZ & the other guy is 1.5 - his penis is nonexistant! - or something like that.

It worked for awhile. But the 90 nm die shrink & revision known as Prescott had numerous issues. Again several other sidebars could be added here but to sum up Intel ended up in a pposition where they could go no further in clock speed.

They ended up ditching NetBurst for a revision to their previous architecture (what became "Core") and this wasn't as expected to scale as high so in addition to simply making the processor "faster" in other ways, they went with parralelism.

The Prescott experienced changed their philosophy. If it hadn't failed, they would be at 10GHz Pentium 6's today - bank on it!

The world record was 8.something on a Cedar Mill P4 with liquid nitrogen. The last batch of NetBurst chips - which were 65nm (they were just die shrinks to test Intel's 65 nm fab process) were capable of 4+ on air, but Intel was no longer interested in that. The thermal issues were mainly with the 90 nm Prescotts. That was part of the reason they could push no further - the things overheated out of the box.

There have been processors that ran hot throughout history (which sounds like an odd word choice for this discussion) but the Prescott & its Xeon derivitaves were probably the most recent (and extreme) example. Most Intel & AMD chips did pretty well as far as heat since then.

A Prescott box doubled as a space heater.

That men, if left to their own devices, would buy towels in exactly one color: white. We would not pick towels to match the wall paper in the washroom. In fact, we would not have wallpaper in the washroom, it would just be painted. One color. We might, if we felt particularly artistic that day, paint the ceiling another color.

397 Anyone know what the line is on Auburn-South Carolina?

Should be interesting.  In the game earlier today there was a graphic of how poorly Auburn has defended big receivers, and sure enough Julio Jones was having his way before he was injured.  The 'Cocks' Jeffries is a 6'4" receiver who also had a solid game against Auburn.  To that, SC has the advantage of being the only team playing Auburn twice, so I'm sure OBC has been doing a lot of work prepping.  The 'Cocks played  a close one in Auburn. . . .

I hope South Carolina wins but I wonder what Vegas thinks.  +6.5?

"Intellectuals" are basically fantasists who really believe that just because they THINK it, it'll absolutely work because they and their friends are super geniuses

Americans are RESULTS oriented, while the elite are "credentials" oriented. That's why all that Brooks can yap about are the degrees and awards he and his coterie have. They never have any real world accomplishments they can point to, no successes that benefited anything other than their own bank accounts

I think Wisconsin is set for a BCS game aren't they?  They're the highest ranked Big 10 team in the BCS I thought, and in a threeway tie that will be the determination of who get the top spot for the Big 10 team.  Its Michigan State or OSU that might not be able to grab an At Large spot.

But the rules change in the case of a Three way tie which happens if MSU Wisconsin and OSU all win tomorrow.  The head to head would only be a factor if its a two way tie at the top.

588 Wisconsin and Michigan State are tied, with Michigan State owning the tie breaker (as they beat the Badgers earlier) Posted by: The Dude at November 27, 2010 02:06 AM The tie-breaker, unfortunately (for MSU), does not come down to head-to-head for who wins the Big Ten and goes to the Rose Bowl. The tie breaker is better BCS ranking. Wisconsin is ranked higher in the BCS than MSU. People ripped on the Wisconsin coach for running up the score on IU, but that's what this stupidass BCS system forces teams to do in order to 'impress' the computers and improve their ranking. I doubt Bielema runs up the score without the dumbass BCS system in place.

595 I actually used to root for OSU against any team other than Illinois, but several years ago a guy moved here from Ohio, and he was the most obnoxious s.o.b I have ever known. He has moved on, thankfully. But I still don't like the Buckeyes. Posted by: Land of Leakin at November 27, 2010 02:11 AM I became a fan of Ohio State out of spite when I moved to SE Michigan and the Wolverine fans were the most obnoxious SOBs I ever had to deal with. They all whined about OSU fans being assholes to them, yet they never looked in the mirror to realize they were just as big of assholes to everyone else. After dealing with enough of their obnoxious, arrogant and condescending BS at work and among friends, I quickly became a fan of my alma mater (Purdue), Ohio State (out of spite) and anyone who played Michigan.

Oh colleges do.  Hence the FCS which is the level of NCAA below the FBS.  They're just afraid doing it at the top level could would kill their little money operation of Bowl games.  Which is retarded, because its not as if the NCAA basketball tournament is preventing the NIT from being played.  And all you have to do is set up some of the later bowl games to include the losing teams from the playoff games.

Posted by: Land of Leakin at November 27, 2010 02:14 AM Yeah, it was 83-20 or something like that. 45-10 at Halftime I think? And I completely agree about supporting playoffs. It is ridiculous that college football determines their "national champion" in such a stupidass fashion. Imagine if all other sports did that. Decided who would play in the World Series, Stanley Cup Finals and Super Bowl by a bunch of coaches and sports writers ranking the teams and then the two with the most votes get to play for the title. It's assinine. I read somewhere a while back that the whole "rankings" started out like the current "Power Rankings" they have for the NFL on some websites. It started out as some sportswriters' niche thing he did for his weekly article each week in his paper. It was simply his own "power rankings". Somewhere along the line, the geniuses in college football decided to take that and give it even more importance and then decided "national champions" by this stupid "power ranking". And the rest is history. I've always thought the college "national champion" was retarded. With no playoff, there is no national champion, as far as I'm concerned. This isn't figure skating, it's football. Football champions are determined by the players on the field in playoffs. PERIOD.

He's just seems so horrible at times.  I remember watching I think the Florida game, and seeing the corners playing off the receivers like 5 yards or more from the line of scrimmage.  So what does Florida spend the game doing?  Passing to their receivers at or behind the line and then they've got a nice easy 5 yard gain or more.  And they did it the entire game.

I think it used to be that they chose a national champion before any of the bowl games were even played.  They were all straight up exhibition games for bragging rights, and probably additional practice time for coaches to evaluate players for next year.

Of course, they've been a thorn in Purdue's side back when we were competing in the Top 25 years back. I remember one game we played at Iowa and were winning in the last moments of the game and then TE Dallas Clark caught the game-winning TD with seconds left. Pissed me off. Hated Iowa after that. But they they started pulling off upsets against the 'big boys' (PSU, OSU, UM) and I started to like them again. Purdue was f'cked from the get-go this season when we lost the Big Ten's best WR (Smith) to a season-ending knee injury before the season, lost our starting RB (Boldin) to a season-ending knee injury before the season and then lost our starting QB (Marve) 3 games into the season. Kerrigan has been a BEAST on D the entire season, but with a castrated offense, we just haven't been able to compete game-in, game-out. We should have beaten MSU last week, but blew that one in the 4th QTR with the bad INT and then the blocked punt. Figures that we'll get our good offensive guys back next season, but we'll lose Kerrigan to the NFL draft. So we'll go back to being good on offense and crap on defense.

Well for years they basically were the dominating forces of the conference, with Wisconsin Iowa or Penn State putting up resistance at times but never in any real consistency.  It seems like Rodriguez at Michigan has killed their potential for being the counter dominating force to OSU in the Big 10.  And who knows how its going to be now with Nebraska coming in.  If this was happening 5 years or longer ago, we'd pretty much be saying that Ohio State and Michigan are going to be playing eachother two weeks in a row.

It is thought to be the most significant arrest of an American citizen planning to kill fellow Americans since the would-be Times Square bomber.

Do you idiots in the news (PR) industry see a trend here?  All these jihaddi SOBs are always born in one of those "suspect" countries and immigrate over here and get citizenship so they can do this kind of shit and get their "rights".  Yes we need some "comprehensive immigration reform". How about this:

First revoke this asshole's citizenship and give him a "Saudi Punishment". How about flogging with a twenty foot snake whip?  Throw salt on him and dump his ass on the beach in Somalia and warn him he will be shot on sight if he tries to come back.

Second take some of those stupid TSA assholes and use them to conduct investigations of other "immigrants that you incompetent assholes have given citizenship to that come from these countries.  Never mind, instead fire all the TSA searchers and use IRS investigators.

Third stop ALL visas and immigration from these countries period.
