Open Thread: Feel-good Story of the Day [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

With all of the bad news these days, it's nice to find a news item that can restore our faith in humanity and make us feel good to be alive.

This is just such a story:

CEDAR CITY - U.S. Sen. Harry Reid is no longer a part of the Southern Utah University Outdoor Engagement Center. SUU President Scott Wyatt decided to make some changes that called for the Nevada senator's name to be removed from the building.

Several months ago, some concerned citizens met with Wyatt, calling for the removal of Reid's name from the center.

"We had people step up and pledge money towards removing his name. In five days I received pledges totaling $40,000 - in just five days," said Cedar City Councilman Paul Cozzens.

The only thing that would make this story more perfect is if the naming opportunity in question had been a daycare center. Amiright, morons?!

This is my favorite quote:

"Sen. Reid is part of the SUU alumni and he was gracious enough to grant the university the use of his name, and I didn't want to offend him in any way," Wyatt said.

MISSION NOT ACCOMPLISHED!

Also, this:

When Reid's name was applied to the center, it was believed donations would be forthcoming, but to this day no money has been given.

"They thought there would substantial donations from Harry Reid's friends," Wyatt said. "But there has never been any money donated for that purpose."

All kidding aside, in philanthropy it is generally really bad form to name something, particularly a permanent thing like a building, in hopes of attracting donations.

Purdue had (may still have) a huge science building that some dunderhead named after Lilly (of Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical company that also runs the largest charitable foundation in Indiana). No gifts ever came and as the building aged it became more and more of a money pit for the University. Finding private money to undertake major repairs and renovations is quite difficult, doubly-so when the building in question is named after someone else.

The trend in higher ed giving these days is to move toward putting an expiration date on naming opportunities for things like stadiums and buildings. It reflects the reality that even a very large gift to build a building does not help the institution maintain and renovate that building twenty years down the line.

Back to the SUU story, in a truly bizarre move, the university has decided to keep Reid's name on a non-existent "center" and eventually transfer it to something when, I suppose, money comes in the door.

I think we should help the university decide on a new naming opportunity, don't you? I'll start the ball rolling...

22 I liked Longmire, but I agree that they were coming of the rails with the storyline.

What I liked about it was the quality of the cast and the feel of the series. But I think it was best when they stuck with a one crime per week format instead of devoting so many episodes to driving the various storylines (Vic/stalker/husband, Longmire's wife, Henry's bar, etc). Also, that was one dangerous county -- people dropping like flies there!

The books are very good if you haven't read them.

37 My college had a policy that it named buildings only after dead people. Then sometime in the 80s some asshole alum donated $2M on the condition that a building be named for him. That opened the floodgates and now basically building naming rights are auctioned off.

Posted by: Y-not watching soccer at August 31, 2014 06:14 AM (zDsvJ)

41 I never got into Longmire. The first episode had him rolling up on local "wingnuts" firing rifles in the desert. Then he literally cries because he has to tell someone he does not know that her husband has died. Then later the grizzled old experienced Western lawman takes a Sharps rifle to a gunsmith to ask what it is and could it be used to shoot someone from 100 yards or so. Never watched it again.

Posted by: Daybrother at August 31, 2014 06:14 AM (KCqmU)

42 . That opened the floodgates and now basically building naming rights are auctioned off. My legal alma mater did that. Some shyster who made gazillions off tobacco litigation gave them a buttload of money and they named the whole damn law school after him. They thought it was great; I thought it was a total embarrassment.

Posted by: Insomniac at August 31, 2014 06:15 AM (mx5oN)

43 The last season of Longmire was focused on minor characters. All the major ones were sort of sidelined. I really like the show (and the books) so I hope it finds a new home.

58 Found out yesterday that a great man I knew had died.  Could but could not believe it.

He was a nearby rancher who I worked for growing up.  He left home at 15 because the home life was shit.  Worked picking cotton and other odd jobs before joining the AF in '47.  Spent most of those years decomming B-29s before getting sent to Korea.  Came home, got married, raised 4 kids, built several local furniture and drug stores businesses, and, ultimately bought the ranch across the highway from us 30-odd years ago.

The man would have a beer in his hand by 8AM and not be without one for the remainder of the day but I never saw him drunk.  He died at 85 and he was out tending his cows until the day they took to the hospital.  He died three days later.

Dammit.  God Bless, Lee.

Not just at Purdue, everywhere. Not that there's anything wrong with it mind you. I had a client about 6 months out of college. My team was on-site and we were on the 4th floor where the accounting people were. It was the typical accounting people. Ugh. Then one day I had to go up to the 7th floor to meet with some director of something or other. For some reason his office was on the 7th floor. Anyway, I get up there and it's like I stepped into paradise. The 7th floor was where all the marketing peeps were. And it was a parade on insanely gorgeous women. So after my meeting, I went back down and like a 13 year old told the rest of my team about this new-found discovery I had just made. And for the next 3 months on that assignment our only mission in life was to interact with the 7th floor as much as we could.

Where'd you get the stompy boots? Do they have a website? I have the worst trouble finding shoes b/c my feet are 'wide', according to the size charts. How else am I supposed to stay upright, I ask you?

Granted, MTP was a prestige property by then as well (even though it was usually second place to This Week with George Will before Russert took over) but MTP is now just about "honoring" journalists by giving them the host position rather than, you know, doing that news thing.

133 While it's true accused child molester and pedophile Harry Reid has never been convicted of pedophilia and molesting, fondling and raping young children, I think this concept should stand in regard to Senator Harry Reid, accused pedophile and child molester: "Regardless of the verdict of juries, no senator, including pedophile Harry Reid, who fondles underage children, no senator, including the catamite Harry Reid, that undertakes or promises to molest a child, no senator, including child sodomizer Harry Reid, that sits in conference with a bunch of NAMBLA members and pedarasts where the ways and means of molesting a child are discussed and does not promptly report to the proper authorities about it, will be considered an evil child rapist and child molester." So it's safe to say Harry Reid molests children and be accurate in that assessment. This was told to me in confidence during the 2012 election by a member of Harry Reid (pedophile)'s own inner circle. He's never proven it's not true.

212 Ugh on the Libya embassy militia thing. We ought to implode the building when we go if we have to abandon an embassy, should never have had an embassy in Libya in the first place and should have told the EU to pound sand when they asked for help in toppling neutered crazy dictator Ghadafi. I want the MSM tarred and feathered so badly for getting the feckless JEF elected.

Meh. More like a combination of physical clumsiness and social ineptness. Some girls look like they should be ballerinas or whatever, I look like I should be schooling polo horses and wrangling escaped cows.

No ego boosting.  I know what self-consciousness does to a person.  Had it my whole life until one I just decided "fcuk you, don't make a shit anyway."  Like it?  Fine.  Don't?  Fuck you.

Tis life.

I don't think so. I've managed to avoid the barrel so far, but I'd expect it to have more mold growing on the walls, unidentifiable things on the floor, and maybe a spam bot sitting in the corner, mumbling to itself in French.

238 'You'll always be harder on yourself than anyone else.'

I keep telling myself that. The trouble is, I don't see the subtle cues- tone, body language, and so on- that everybody else sees, so I expend lots of energy making sure I understand what the person is saying, then finding an appropriate reply. Just part of living, I'm sure, but it does make for some interesting conversations.

Me either.  Just who I am.  Maybe you too.  Ain't no thing, though.  It's who you are.  People gotta love you for who you are and not what you want or wish to to be.

Saw a man with the jinx in the third degree
From trying to deal with people--people you can't see
Take away, take away, this house of mirrors
Give away, give away, all the souvenirs
We're all in the same boat ready to float off the edge of the world
The flat old world
The street is a sideshow from the peddler to the corner girl
Life is a carnival--it's in the book
Life is a carnival--take another look
