ONT 9/30/14 - Homework Edition [krakatoa]
— Open Blogger

YeeIkes. Tuesday already.

Time flies when you have a 7 month old. Some people say it's the added responsibility, the extra work just to get an extra human being through the day, or even just a defense mechanism against remembering in vivid detail what just came out of your perfect little mini-you.

I say it's all the Scotch.

Or in this case, Bulleit Rye, which is my new favorite. It's not terribly pricey, it has a unique flavor, it's smooth, and after the first sip or two, it completely dulls the pain of Val-U-Rite Vodka's well known side effect, open throat ulcers. Or, according to science, Cancer. But then you give a moron enough of anything *, and he or she is sure to get some disease.

So I volunteered to be your Tuesday diversion. Your regularly scheduled ONT host has better things to do, although we promised to tell the regular readers that he misses them greatly, and it is with great regret that he had to foist you off on guest bloggers so that he could pursue "job responsibilities". And then he said something about some tentacle pr0n conference, and a asked whether "these rhinestones make my Cthulothario costume too 'effeminate'". We assured him it was probably the Freddy Mercury mustache, of all things, that was making people uncomfortable.

Anyway, on to the festivities.
Let's get the ugly out up top. After that opening, I know what everyone is thinking: "Homework? Double-U, Tee-Eff?"

I don't know how many of you read the sidebar.

Hell, I don't know if any of you can actually read. Much less type. I certainly don't follow up on the comments and try to decipher what most often can be charitably described as the crack-addled spasms of a 3-fingered epileptic. **

But for those of you that can read, and can form complete sentences, did you happen to check out the sidebar item on creepy "true" reddit stories?

I blew more time than I like to admit there, having experienced my share of crazy stuff in my life. Haunted house, haunted apartment, UFO sighting, the drive by Area 51 complete with crazy giant jackrabbits vaulting our vehicle while we did 50 mph and ghostly flying creatures that could best be described as albino giant bats... and I know it's all true because I have super-explicit memories of them. You might say those memories are scientific.

So tomorrow, I want you to blow off work, or slut-shaming, or whatever your day job is and read some of those stories to get in the mood, and then tomorrow night, just crap all over that ONT with your own creepy stories.

Or hell, be a real go-getter and post them here tonight for extra credit.

I got nothing with meat to talk about. Slow news day, and you can only talk about Obama's snowballing sideshow of a presidency so often.

Maybe some fun pictures to soften the experience.

Obama's response to various scandals, crises and golf junkets as described by the MSM:

reporter tackles tiger.jpg

Obama's various solutions, in reality:

unrealistic-expectations.gif

I had this in my back pocket --- apologies if this made a previous ONT, but it segues in with the concept of unintended consequences when the government decides to DO ANYTHING! Among other things, more cobras than you can shake a press secretary at.

But that's no fun. Let's see... how about something that will provide some distraction from the existential nightmare that is the contemporary Western world.

I know what you're thinking. Family Feud, amiright? This is a list of FF answers that "Caused Steve Harvey to Lose His Faith In Humanity."

That said, I think the response to this one was about as affirming as you could possibly hope for.

I attended a demanding institution, which shall remain nameless to protect it's honor. On Saturdays we had 'White Glove' inspections, during which your bedcovers were likely to be measured by upperclassman officers. Corners were to be tight, at 45 deg. angle, blanket was bounce-a-quarter tight, the cuff (turned down collar) was 18" from the head rail, and the cuff itself was 6". Any deviation from the above, and you would find your mattress and etc. scattered on the floor, and receive demerits. The consequence was that many guys would carefully make their bed the night before, and sleep on the floor. Because reveille 05:55. Formation, 06:00.

104 As for my recommendations for the AP Framework, I'd set Samuel Adams up against governor Thomas Hutchinson any day. The reading material would include Stedman's "History of the Origin, Progress, and Termination of the American War". Oh, and, of course, Peter Oliver's "Origin and Progress of the American Rebellion": "I have done Sir! for the present, with my Portraits. If you like them, & think them ornamental for your Parlour, pray hang them up in it; for I assure You, that most of them justly demerit a Suspension." I'd have them singing "God Save The Queen" by the end of the term.

They seem to be the kind of things you have to think back to, something maybe you age out of or ghosts don't bother with old guys because prank wars in the afterlife suck, whatever. I do recall after my grandfather died, must've been around when I was 3-4 years old, I used to have dreams where he'd show up until my early 20s when my grandma, his wife, died. And he was always trying to teach me stuff in oddball circumstances. Among the last ones, he was trying to tell me about how everybody had different points of view and everybody got to wherever they were going, yet we had met in a large underground train depot, like penn station, and it was full of dead people getting on trains with the placards reading crap like Gehenna and Hades and such.

211 Warner's ads also have a very noticeable figure missing, Obama. He now touts his "bi-partisanship" and his ads feature pictures of GOP senators.

There was a major outbreak of Leprosy in the middle ages, which suddenly stopped. When they started doing reviews of burials of the time, they figured that what happened was that leprosy was a slow disease, that weakened the immune system, and when TB showed up it pretty much blew through the lepers like fine in lint.

As a response to my little rant someone sarcastically asked what I thought about flu shots. To which I responded "do you mean their efficacy"? To which they retorted "no do you think they are effective"? At which point I just shut up before I really offended anyone.

290 Swatara, when I am drawn out on the subject I merely say that every year about half way through the flu season a notice comes out saying that "gosh darn it, we got the wrong strain this year!" Then about six months later a presser comes out saying that the inoculations were a wonderful success and everyone should get another one next year.  A) I am tired of being lied to, B) obviously disease control is not how they define success, and based on that C) I am starting to feel like this is Moscow, circa 1980, where you are pretty sure the medical system is not out to kill  you, but the whole point is no longer your continued survival.

At this point everyone decides I am a crazy loon and should be shunned.

319 I don't recommend pagefiles on the SSD because they have limited write life. SSDs are wonderful for repeated fast reads of the same data, such as when booting, but aren't so good for writing. Each sector can sustain only about 10,000 writes until it wears out. (For the same reason never put a write-intensive database on an SSD)

339 So I found out that since the civil war messiness in Liberia about ten years ago, we stopped deporting them. Amnesty for humanitarian reasons. It was about to expire. Last Friday the JEF wrote an executive order freezing all deportations of Liberians for at least another two years because of Ebola. Dallas Morning News is reporting this patient wasn't visiting here. He moved here. Last week. So now we have ebola amnesty. And just like other amnesty it will encourage immigration. What could go wrong. Right now liberians main exports are terrorism and ebola. By the way there is terrible ebola in neighboring Sierra Leone. Liberia has a policy about illegal immigration from Sierra Leone into liberia to escape ebola. They shoot them. The army has been instructed to shoot them. Another factoid I learned today. There is now a huge black market in liberia for the blood of people who are alleged to have survived ebola. Not sure what they do with it. Can't be good

340 I understand both sides of the DH/no DH thing.  On the one hand, each team has 9 players who are on the field and also bat, therefore the pitcher should be one of them.  On the other hand, if the pitcher is generally weak at batting overall, why make him bat when for the most part it's a wasted out (or a strategic one, like a bunt) unless the miraculous happens?

359 HDD brands are like wine vintages. 2005-7 WD HDDs sucked eggs. Hitachi also had some bad years. Check Newegg and avoid models that have above average early-death complaints in the reviews. And on RAID-5, always use 'Enterprise' class drives, not retail OTS ones. The Enterprise drives keep retrying longer before giving up, which prevents the RAID controller from marking the drive bad prematurely. If you rack up OTS drives, a single hiccup will cause the HDD to get blacklisted too quickly and you'll be running through replacement HDDs a lot most than actually necessary. In the long run Enterprise HDDs will save you $$$.

410 290 Swatara, when I am drawn out on the subject I merely say that every year about half way through the flu season a notice comes out saying that "gosh darn it, we got the wrong strain this year!" Then about six months later a presser comes out saying that the inoculations were a wonderful success and everyone should get another one next year.

Posted by: Kindltot at September 30, 2014 10:37 PM (t//F+)

Every year for the flu shot thing, I did the flu snort. First, it's produced quicker -- so it is more likely to contain the right virus. Second, it's not a shot, and I'm phobic. And, third, I figured if I was an early-adopter and supported the technology, it'd be there for me later.

478 I knew an old newspaper reporter when I was a kid who said there was a guy, and this was in the 50's or 60's, who would come down to the paper printing plant and get linotype slugs and mail them off in return postage guaranteed envelopes.  Eventually the post office asked him to stop because they jammed up the equipment.
He then went to gluing them to the sides of chunks of 2 x 4's he got fir free from the mill and the guy I knew lost track of him.

Cash is definitely king. Any online purchases I do are pretty much 100%  music related. Guitars, amps, tools for guitars, tubes for amps, parts, etc. They have no fucking clue what to make of me, so I get sent squat. The few things I do get are a few catalogs from music stores or music supply companies. I get to look at cool pictures. lol

Meh. When the fiancee and I spent quality time at the Kuakini Medical Center's hyperbaric chamber, they'd recently been using it to treat cases of flesh-eating bacteria. (1) It's not like it was a cab and people were hopping in-and-out-of-it for convenience; and (2) there are protocols to clean the thing up between uses.

Mind you, it creeped me out at the chamber -- and, whatever those protocols were, I'd personally have gone further (e.g. -- "immerse entire chamber in bleach for several days")....but I'm not going to freak out too much on just that.

I'd be more concerned that the Ebola patient's bathroom might be plumbed into the regular sewer line....

On the good news/bad news front, your Garmin is pretty good.....and its limitations are probably not Garmin's fault.....because government maps suck balls sideways. As an example, I live on a corner -- two of my neighbors on the corner live on the same street that I do....one lives on the cross street. There is an area within easy walking distance where neighbors across the street live in different cities.....it is entirely possible that the address was mapped to a stake in the ground when the place was first being constructed, before roads and buildings were set in.

So many different species, including both the reservoirs and the susceptible hosts for Ebola virus. That is to say the fruit bats and gorillas and chimps," said Cameron. Yeah, you just go with that. It's found in all sorts of bodily fluids from its victims, but doesn't like the water that comprises 98% of those fluids.....

On the flip side, it probably wouldn't last long in a sewage treatment plant....and the reason is kind of fun.

Ever wonder how they come up with antibiotics in the first place? After penicillin, scientists were sittin' around scratchin' their noggins and going, "Bread mold -- the fucker gets a Nobel and worldwide acclaim from moldy bread.....where do I get something to top that?" And, after a few conferences, they came up with a brilliant idea that they're still using today.

Find someplace that has horrible, nasty, highly communicable diseases and look "downstream" from there -- along actual streams, canals, roads, carrier species, whatever -- and see where the infection stops. Then send parties of highly-expendable grad students to sample the daylights out of that area to see what stopped it.

This sort of thing is pretty much exemplified by the development of cephalosporin antibiotics....which were discovered in a sewer pipe in Sardinia, where it was observed that beaches where the outfall washed up didn't necessarily develop typhoid. http://tinyurl.com/5sv3d4s The only thing that keeps this from being a perfect example is that the guy went there himself and did the work.

Yes, they laugh off antibiotics in a host.....but that doesn't mean they aren't efficiently recycled into their constituent amino acids in nature. To the right kind of bacteria, a filovirus in a sewer looks like a ham sammich -- which is why I wouldn't be particularly worried about outflows from a modern sewage treatment plant.....things are pretty thoroughly digested by then.

I was thinking of making some sort of joke about "especially certain about infected semen", but then I thought of a practical joke from High School and where I live.....and it's more like, "hmmmm".

So, first, the practical joke. Back before you could ruin people's reputations on FaceBook, I went to a High School where there was a prissy, uptight, socially-inept math teacher named XXX ZZZZ, who taught the higher-level math classes [including a pre/semi-calculus class called "Mathematical Analysis"* -- that was unfortunately shortened to fit on report cards as "MATH ANAL", and was inevitably referred to as "anal math"].

Anyway, during my senior year**, a group of students latched onto some new technology (the "printing press") and ran off a couple of zillion pieces of paper with "XXX ZZZZ whacked here" with a downward arrow. Printed on 4" x 6" papers in portrait format, these found themselves adorning bathroom stalls, phone booths, the back of cabinets, ceilings...not only on-campus, but in local businesses...

As an isolated incident, it's amusing.....but when you consider this along with Babylon-By-The-Bay just 50 miles north.....even without the to-do about towels and skid-marks.....

So, yeah. I'm going to be extra vigilant. Ewww.

* In point of fact, math faculty is about 50% algebraists (including matrix, vector algebra), 5% geometricians, and 45% analysts (calculus, differential equations) -- according to my mom, who was a math prof.

** No, I wasn't involved in this one. Although I laughed, even though I was actually somewhat fond of the guy involved -- at least, he wanted you to actually learn something.

Me, I was more of a 'shop' class sorta guy; I discovered later on in life that math and I got along (I was forced to take a math class in college for a 'necessary credit' and got a B in Calculus... hadn't taken any math in years before then). Oh well, the road less traveled and all that...

My dad has three STEM degrees, my Mom has two. I hit college-level Engineering (despite being an Econ major) Calculus (with prep from XXX ZZZZ's "anal math") and did OK.

Oh, sorry -- did I say "did OK"? I stomped the curve and had the highest grade in the 200+ person class. The instructor made a personal pitch for me to shift over to the "Calculus for the anointed Math students" track, but I decided not to.

Instead, I stuck with Engineering Calculus while they shifted the class three hours earlier in the morning.....and ended-up "no-passing" it the next quarter, to the great shame of my parents. Those familiar with my hours on the ONT are nodding their heads, unsurprised....

Posted by: cthulhu at September 30, 2014 09:45 PM (T1005)

737 Incidentally, I find that I'm becoming more-and-more of a 'shop' class guy in my dotage....I just flung brass chips out of my mini-mill last Sunday, for instance. There's an innate satisfaction in just doing something, rather than arguing the number of angels dancing on the head of a pin.

Perhaps our Governor implemented a "Color" tax on leaves, to go with the rain tax on water, and the trees are rebelling.

763 236 Holy Shit. Just saw a local (boston) story about 4 kids being treated at Childrens Hospital with polio symptoms, possibly or not possibly related to entero virus which they are inundated with.

So, we have Ebola, enterovirus, TB, possibly polio, random non-islamic islamic fanatic beheadings, Bagdhad is about to be overrun...and its only Tuesday? Jesus fucking christ!

In Denver we have (at last count) about 10 kids with "paralysis symptoms", presumably from this enterovirus-68 thing that "coincidentally" started popping up as the UAC's started attending US schools.

Absolutely NO POSSIBLE CONNECTION, of course.

Our Betters In Washington, whose sole raison-d'etre is to protect and defend the interests of the United State of America and the well-being of its citizens, would never let that happen.

Our Betters In Washington are terribly afraid that somebody, somewhere, will mis-use hydrocone and/or oxycontin.

So, just like with guns, they ratchet up the pressure on the law-abiding.  You know, since you can't FORCE CRIMINALS to abide by the law, you lean harder and harder on ordinary citizens.

Got crime?  Punish the innocent.  Makes perfect sense.  (... If you're a "Big Government Needs To Fix Everything"-type twat.)

WHY did Microsoft ever go the "registry" route?  (I know, I know:  to keep people from "stealing" their "intellectual property".  Still... -->  Bah!)

The old style was, each program lived in its own folder and all its "necessary ingredients" were right there.  You could save each folder to another drive or write to a CD or whatever, and when your hard drive failed, restore the folders as-is to the new drive.  NOW, when the hard drive fails, you have to go find the original install CD's, and the original keys, and re-install and re-register everything.  PITA.  God alone knows where all my originals are.  Upstairs, downstairs, still in some random box where I stashed them when I moved the last time.....
