Oh, My: Pittsburg News Station Broadcasts Workers' Live Reactions to Changes to Their Insurance Policies Under Obamacare
— Ace

What a stunt. What an idea.

Let it be copied a thousand times.

Will it be? Well, dramatizing the news is generally a TV news imperative. They like moving pictures, don't they? But I don't know if too many people in the news business want to dramatize (and thereby increase interest in) the effect of Obamacare on the typical American worker.

Here's hoping, though.

This is a really amazing report.

MSNBC just tweeted that racists would "bust nut" while watching this, then they apologized and said the responsible party had been fired and also promoted to host of their new weekend show.

And meanwhile in Washington DC we have 'immigration reform,' 'green shoots,' homosexual marriage, light bulb bans, cash awards for the wealthy Lautenberg widow, etc. The disconnect you see there is Crying Out for a political movement. A 3rd party if done right, could be successful in just one election cycle.

This is comedy (in the operatic tragic sort of way).  They've made it where people can get insurance, they just can't get care.  So many people will have totally free coverage through Medicaid, but so many doctors don't even take Medicaid patients.  People like these, might be able to pay their premiums, but they won't be able to get sick because they won't be able to come up with the deductibles.

Ma Pa and 3 young men 18 to 24 6000/yr deductible 0% copay 2013 888/mo 2014 extension 971/mo after extension runs out and we are cast down with the sodomites in Obama care then we rise to $1428/mo with 15% copy and shift from a PPO with our old doctor to an HMO. Currently this is the only plan available after November 2014 for us. We're fucked in the individual market. These are private figures but this kind of stuff needs to be talked about more and more.

Practically speaking, given the average American's ability to manage his or her budget, this would be a terrible idea that would turn so many into criminals.

Much simpler, and probably implementable merely by an executive order or directive, would be requiring the IRS to thank you for your (involuntary) contribution, including the dollar amount, at least annually, at the squaring of your taxes.

95 "The thing about the deductible, if you have kids, you are going to hit it."

Which brings up a pet question of mine:

What the holy mother of heck is going ON with kids these days that they are requiring such colossal use of the medical system?

Every parent I talk to reels off a list of doctor visits that sounds like the kid is already a retired grandparent on Medicare getting ready to kick the bucket.

Individual kids have spent more time in the pediatrician's office by age ten than my entire goddamned NEIGHBORHOOD full of kids had by that age, combined. And we were not shrinking violets in my childhood. We were "free range". Very free ranging. We got hurt. Sometimes badly. We got sick. Occasionally seriously so.

Our playgrounds alone would scare the living shit out of any modern school principal, who if transported back in time would have insisted on their instant removal. Slides! Tall slides! Really tall! With ladders! And no side guards!

Whereas these kids who seldom leave the house save for "play dates" in ultrasupervised, relentlessly safe and controlled environments where it's barely possible to even skin a knee, much less fracture a skull, seem to be at the doctor half the week. What is going on here? Adult hypochondria by proxy?

I say ignore Obama's illegitimate laws, ignore Obama and his democrat lackeys.

We'll do it ourselves, we shall endeavor to persevere. we shall fight on the beaches, in the hills, in the suburbs, in the streets, and we will never, never, never give up.

104 Every parent I talk to reels off a list of doctor visits that sounds like the kid is already a retired grandparent on Medicare getting ready to kick the bucket. Posted by: torquewrench at January 30, 2014 09:24 PM (gqT4g) ________ Part of it is because people in general don't have to pay for any of their health care. If your deductible is only $250 or $500, you don't give a shit if you take your kid to 100 specialists. Hey it doesn't cost you anything, so why not? Which is why I don't mind the high deductible plans. It forces people to think twice before going to the 17th specialist when the first 16 said nothing is wrong with you.

118 torquewrench, unfortunately for us, my husband and I both have serious chronic illnesses. And our daughters have inherited several of those illnesses. That is why my kids see a doctor so often. I can't speak for anyone else. Maybe part of the issue is that there is so much more that can be diagnosed and treated nowadays. One of the things my youngest daughter has is ADHD. She is on a medication that truly helps her focus and concentrate; her friends at school can tell when she hasn't taken it. That alone requires a doctor's visit every three months. Prescribing something the equivalent of meth is still taken pretty seriously.

190 I'll bet a majority of Americans do not yet know they are *mandated* to have insurance, and will pay a *fine* if they don't. *Fine* by me. I don't have kids, I don't have any pre-existing or chronic health conditions(yet)so... until the tax fine tax whatever the fuck it is, reaches a significant percentage of what I could expect to pay out in premiums, deductibles, and copays in one year (should Wiley Coyote ever manage to drop that anvil on my head) it makes no financial sense for me to jump on this merry-go-round. And I'm not one of the 20-something "invincibles" either. I'm a very fortunate (healthwise)gal, who signed up for an affordable and sensible CAT-HSA plan a good 5 years ago when she saw 40 yrs. old on the horizon and all it's concomitant premium hikes. The fact that I had to drop it when the economy shit the bed makes no nevermind. The plan that I had, that worked for me, is illegal now, under Obamacare.

194 I would think that most of these people qualify for a federal subsidy. Maybe they could decline the company-based insurance and go to an "exchange" on their own? Don't know if that is allowed. Of course, who wants to get tangled up with this hideous federal program. Also, the subsidies deal with premium costs, but what about the huge deductibles?

201 Here's the really sick thing -- those bill-sharing ministries, where the members help each other pay medical bills? They can do that on less than $200 per month. This includes people with expensive health problems in the mix (although you must have a healthy lifestyle to join).

Same here, there once was a time when you could take that $345 a month and buy something like a classic car or an airplane, have it paid for in couple years and have something worth value. But thanks to the fucks in Washington the economy is so bad nothing material increases in value anymore.

209 90% of the people under 60 could get by on catastrophic plan that pays above twenty grand. Pay the rest out of pocket. If everybody did it the cost healthcare would plummet and probably worst case scenario, the policy would cost around 150.00 a month. Yep. That's what I had and I'm a female smoker! (Though my plan/State did give me the option of forgoing Maternity Care, which can save you a bundle.)

Leaving the company plan to go govt plan may not help them even with the subsidies.  Those govt plans have huge deductibles too.

In the report they don't really talk about the employer's portion of the employees healthcare that he pays either.  So its even worse than indicated.  Eventually he will cancel and pay them more (but not enough) which is the real plan of obamacare.

It's a rap sheet of every cringe-worthy idiocy he committed and it's a good palate cleanser after constantly reading downer articles. Middle class kid from a prefab suburb in Ontario goes on a wild tear of beer bashes, acid trips, projectile vomiting, inept sex, and punk rock. It's hilarious and somehow elevating. I HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE when people use the word free and medical care together because none of it is free. My yearly mammogram is NOT free, my annual physical and guy no exam is NOT free. 270 189 I'll bet a majority of Americans do not yet know they are *mandated* to have insurance, and will pay a *fine* if they don't.

315 ...the rates of car ownership and electricity usage keep declining! Really? Especially the electricity usage rates... Really? It must be industrial or something. I just can't see that on a household level. I mean, even accounting for more energy efficient appliances and whatnot, we all just have so much more of that buzzing 24/7 in our homes nowadays. It's not like the 80's, where your Dad would yell at you for not turning the damn light out the instant you stepped from one room to another. Or making a mental map of the last time you saw the interior of the fridge before you dast open it to wide or too long and be accused of wanting to air-condition the whole house. Don't even get me started on wanting to heat the entire neighborhood! There must have been a fairly limited amount of potential electricity usages for 1980's parents to keep track of them so tightly as to have a significant impact on the ComEd bill, no? 338 This is what used to be known as journalism.  It is very easy to go to a politician and have them feed you a story.  They tell you everything to print and all you have to do is phone it in.  You only have to make one phone call because it is all centralized for you.  It takes hard work and shoe leather to actually go out and see if the BS you have been fed is true.  You have to call lots of businesses.  You have to canvas areas.  You have to gain access.

Journalists in the US are selected for bias, laziness, low IQ and credulousness.  They are almost to a man worthless... which is why this seems so damn shocking to see.  Most reporters will not venture into a small business for the same reason Hollywood will not make a movie about how bad life was behind the Iron Curtain.  It is not the narrative they want to present.  It is instead reality.

Not jumping on that bandwagon. My disagreement with him was quite simply that I cannot, and will never, feel sorry for them. He seemed to think that meant I wanted them to die. Not true, I just won't feel sorry for them when they do.

354 329 No matter what you do, people will end up suffering. The point of our system was that that pain was isolated. People were free to do as the wished, even going down in a ball of flame. The point was that no one person could take us all down with them. However, we have messed with that system so extensively that most of the checks and balances no long work. Plus, you have a bunch of people who are afraid to be the check that is their job (congress.) We have concentrated more and more power in a place the founders specifically did not want that power (the executive and Judicial... or Washington D.C. if you want to go that route.) By keeping people from suffering the consequences of their own actions, we could have also kept US from suffering the consequences of their actions. The system is not supposed to work like that, but it is where we are.

364 "Unless you're not due a refund. Use deductions accordingly."

Again be careful about this. Just because they won't directly take the "tax" out of your paycheck or bank, they will punish you through penalties and interest on the tax you owe. And it will snowball.

371 I HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE when people use the word free and medical care together because none of it is free. My yearly mammogram is NOT free, my annual physical and guy no exam is NOT free. You, I, and every taxpayer is paying for it one way or another. That's what I tell anyone who uses the F word with me. I'm with ya, lindafell! I have ALWAYS paid these sorts of expenses out of pocket. (Heh,"guy no exam"!) What puzzles me, is the idea that paying a mandated monthly premium of anywhere between $150 to $1200 per month (depending on subsidies and family size) somehow makes birth control more accessible or affordable for women.

Posted by: Deety at January 30, 2014 05:53 PM (D8ONs)

372 20 I still agree with the idea that repealing automatic withholding on paychecks would be the single biggest thing we could do to right the ship.

Can you imagine tax day every year if that happened? "They want HOW MUCH?!?"

Posted by: Aetius451AD at January 30, 2014 09:02 PM (TGgNi)

Practically speaking, given the average American's ability to manage his or her budget, this would be a terrible idea that would turn so many into criminals.

Much simpler, and probably implementable merely by an executive order or directive, would be requiring the IRS to thank you for your (involuntary) contribution, including the dollar amount, at least annually, at the squaring of your taxes.
Posted by: red sweater

Bullshit.  The financial services industry would invent a hundred simple ways to manage that money for you overnight.  Certified check due at the end of the Government fiscal year - then vote on 2 Nov

376 The trade-off for a higher deductible is supposed to be a lower premium. PERZACLY eman! But that assumes one is talking about insuring oneself against a financial risk. I don't know what we are supposed to be doing here but premiums, actuarial tables and deductibles have nothing to do with HEALTH CARE and this bastard monstrosity of the government dictated ACA combined with employer based "Health Plans", Medicare & Medicaid sure as hell doesn't fit any reasonable definition of INSURANCE as understood for fucking centuries.

377 I'm with Deety on the elec bill. It's disgusting. Posted by: Infidel at January 30, 2014 10:35 PM (6bvBO) I was kind of kidding about that, Infidel. Now that I see, 30 years later, the kind of WASTEFUL electricity usage my folks INDULGE in, now that they are retired... (Always on, microwaves, 4 TV's even when they are "off", coffee pots w/ timers, 2 Computers, Cable Boxes for all the TV's, DVR's, chargers for phones and pads, garden path lights, security lights, timers for the drip irrigation system...etc..) I'm thinkin' that the impact on the family's monthly Com-Ed bill of my neglecting to shut off a desk-lamp occasionally in 1985 was either being highly exaggerated by my folks or that Bill Ayers father Tom was even a bigger bastard than his son and just RAPING the poor folks of Chicago on electricity rates!

378 It takes hard work and shoe leather to actually go out and see if the BS you have been fed is true. You have to call lots of businesses. You have to canvas areas. You have to gain access. To give the most generous benefit of the doubt, it's not like News organizations have (or can) give any sort of budget to a "shoe-leather" reporter nowadays. Much cheaper to have some juice-box sipping twats like Ezra Klein or Matt Yglesias burble their Sophomoric "insights" back and forth to each other over the intarwebz in hopes of creating a new revenue stream to replace the one that Cragslist destroyed. That's why it was delicious seeing Ezra get laughed out of the room after his ludicrous demand of $10 MILLION & a staff of 30 for his vanity project. Who the fuck does he think he is? Charles Dickens?! (More than 100 years ago Ezra, Charles Dickens made more money for more newspapers and magazines, in more countries, than you could hope to lightly fondle with the internet, by serializing his "Classic Novels") At least Mark Twain knew that his job was to fill up the spaces in between ads for "Stanton & Son's Black Smithing" and H.W.B. Tellford's Patented Electric Cure for Female Hysteria" and get people to buy the paper that printed said ads. Ezra seems to think that companies exist to pay the operating costs for his Sophomoric burblings by way of ads that his devoted readers will never really see but as a mildly irritating obstacle course to be navigated on the way up the path to the Oracle. Oh, there might be a PAY-WALL? Whatever shall we do? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! (To quote James Taranto) Perhaps it should be by subscription only? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! You'd be just like Ron Paul!
