Obama, the Squanderer in Chief
— Gabriel Malor

The president was skewered by Republican columnist Jamie Kirchick in today's L.A. Times. It has all the right people squealing and it's definitely worth a read:

At a stop on his grand global apology tour this spring, President Obama was asked by a reporter in France if he believed in "American exceptionalism." This is the notion that our history as the world's oldest democracy, our immigrant founding and our devotion to liberty endow the United States with a unique, providential role in world affairs.

Rather than endorse the proposition -- as every president in recent memory has done one way or another -- Obama offered a strange response: "I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism."

This is impossible. If all countries are "exceptional," then none are, and to claim otherwise robs the word, and the idea of American exceptionalism, of any meaning. Besides, American exceptionalism is demonstrable -- Cuban journalists, Chinese political dissidents, Eastern Europeans once again living in the shadow of a belligerent Russia and, yes, even some Brits and Greeks look toward the U.S. and nowhere else to defend freedom.

It gets better from there; click over and read the whole thing.

1 Of course America is exceptional...it elected me.

Before that? Meh, not so much.

3 I just posted this on the last thread, but since you are all sheep of the flock, you most likely have moved to this thread, so I will post it again to get the best reaction: The whole HHS nomination process represents precisely what is wrong with the GOP - that the Republicans in the Senate voted along strict party lines because of her stance on abortion. It clearly defines just how beholden the GOP is to religious conservatives, and shows in no uncertain terms how hard it is to be a moderate Republican. 31 GOP Senators voted against her strictly because she is Pro-Choice. I would venture a guess that the Senators who voted for her did not do so because she is Pro-Choice, but instead because she is qualified and believe that she will do a good job. The defection of Arlen Specter further demonstrates the problem at hand - you can't be a moderate Republican anymore - you will be pushed out of the party by fringe-right conservatives. How is this inclusive? How is this supposed to grow the Republican Party? How is this going to satisfy anyone but the hard-core right and religious fanatics? That is what the GOP is turning itself into, and that is why more and more people are turning away from it. Social issues once used to be the business of pussy little Democrats, and Republicans used to say "Sorry, we simply don't care about your stance on social issues. We care about limited government and low taxes - and that inherently excludes us giving two damp steamy shits about social issues." That GOP is DEAD, and died somewhere in the mid-90's, when they feared permanent control by Bill Clinton. And sold themselves to the religious right to regain control. The GOP isn't dead, but it is certainly on life support at this point. And you fucking freakwings that frequent this site are helping to shovel on the dirt on the coffin. I am a LIBERAL - but i believe in the need for a rational, reasonable Republican Party, because the ideals of Barry Goldwater and others of his kind are important to this country. It's just too bad that the GOP has turned to the darkside - the darkside that consists almost solely of people holding up signs of dead babies, who fear-monger over homosexuals, and televangelist preachers who in their spare time smoke methamphetamines and have sex with male prostitutes. I know there are some reasonable Republicans left out there, but they are now represented by the Sean Hannity's and Ted Haggarts of the world. All of you pig-fucking neo-con goons can eat my centrist dick.

After all, The Republican Senate total swelled to 55 seats and the GOP House total to 232, the highest post-election total for the party on the House side in nearly 60 years and equaling the GOP's highest post-election total on the Senate side since the eve of the Great Depression in the late 1920's Continue on in your silly blather now...

Obambi is a product of modern education – you know, nobody fails, we don’t keep score, there are no bad children – just bad parents. Worship of the earth has replaced God, feeling good matters more than doing good and ancient notions like honor, courage and loyalty mean absolutely nothing.

In a society that has lost any pretense of right and wrong, where “do your own thing” is the prime motivator and pretending to care about everything is an excuse to care about nothing – we get a President who has no real world experience, no business ties and no military background to counter that training.

If Obama scares you now, just wait 20 years and see what manner of mindless, cowardly, spineless troll we get for CIC. Rome failed because it lost its courage then it lost its soul. Finally, it lost an empire.

23 I am not a Democrat. but the GOP has about eaten itself at this point, and I certainly don't want our country run by a one-party system. That is what will lead to things like Germany in the 1930's. we need the GOP to be strong and healthy, and not prevent people from aligning themselves with it because of who represents it. How are younger people and moderates supposed to join a party that only caters to either A.) the Super-Rich, or B.) the uber religious-right? All these people who showed up at tea parties were great, I'm happy they exressed themselves - but where were they protesting massive government expansion, rampant government spending, and erosion of civil rights for the 8 years of the Bush Administration? All of these things add up to a weakened and discredited GOP by the centrists of America. I'm sure I'm getting ripped right now by the Neo-Cons on this site, but those people aren't going to elect the next POTUS. The moderates are. And fewer and fewer moderates want to be a part of the GOP. And how could you blame them? You people have no idea what it is to be a moderate, you listen to Rush Limbaugh too much. Admit it - none of you even want any moderates included in your party. And if you pay attention, 31 GOP senators were blocking her nomination because of her stance on abortion. It's a fact. They're all religious nutjobs, who couldn't give a hit less about actually getting anything done, they only care about pandering to their fucking nutjob voters. It's a racket, and you people have bought into it.

Don't forget that, to liberals, abortion is a sacrament. How dare even one get an inkling that someone might not like someone because of it. It's the old gay marriage! Abortion is sooo yesterday.

Specter switched because he was going to get murdered in the primaries for being a pussy.

Moderate republicans don't win because they lack an idealology, a base, and a backbone. They also taste like chicken.

What the hell is a "religious fanantic"? Someone who believes in God and doesn't hold abortion as a sacrament? You've just defined most of the nation and the world.

Social issues, i.e. socialism are still for pussies. Life issues: marriage, death, life, medicine, etc. are not. You can't destroy the nation we once were without destroying the family first. You and your pussy friends have made a great start.

34 Bammer is pretty obviously of the "citizen of the world" generation of coddled post-WWII children who have never suffered through invasion, starvation, or serious catastrophe. These children are ahistorical in that the consider the past to be irrelevant in a large sense to how the future unfolds. Postmodernism and multi-culturalism are true religious ideologies to most of these people: not just commonsense approaches to societal problems, but ex universalis Truth to be adhered to even in the face of inefficiency, failure, and even defeat. It is a religious creed, and it's all of a piece: environmentalism, transnationalism, postmodernism, and so on. It's an effort to level everything, to smooth everything out, to bring everything and everyone under control.  The hard-power version of this is totalitarianism, whether in the guise of Communism or Socialist-Nationalism; the soft-power version (more insidious) is the heavy-handed machinations of the EU and the USA under Obama.

The problem with these children (some approaching old age now) is that they think that every human being on earth thinks just like they do -- or if not, then those people either do not understand, and must be educated; or are evil, and must be suppressed. They cannot comprehend an enemy who wishes neither dialogue nor co-existence. Chamberlain considered Hitler a civilized man, a cultured man, a man who surely would act in a civilized way. Gullible Western journalists and acadmenics toured the Soviet Union of the 1930's and gushed over how Josef Stalin had rasied his country into the industrial age; they carefully looked away from the millions of corpses Stalin left behind him. Likewise Mao Zedong.

Obama is not evil -- he's just clueless, self-involved, and a little stupid. The biggest fault I find with him is that he apparently really believes the nonsense he spouts. Men like him do not murder millions of innocents -- they only hold open the door for the monsters who do.

I don't believe in proportionate action; I believe in disproportionate action. If you shoot one of my I'll kill ten of yours. Burn down my house and I'll destroy one of your cities. You pull a knife; I pull a gun. You pull a gun, I drop a fucking bomb on you. If you hate me, that's fine: as long as you fear me as well. In fact, if you hate me I want you to be so fucking scared of me that you sit up nights thinking of ways to avoid pissing me off. I want you to warn your friends about what a crazy asshole I am. I want you to have nightmares about the shit I'd do to you if you ever do me or mine wrong. And if by some reason you lose your mind and actually try to hurt me, or someone close to me, then I'll make it my purpose in life to hunt you down and erase you from the planet. You will become my hobby, my sole interest, my sole topic of conversation."

And I would take this philosophy to any government office. If you are my friend, I will defend you with my life. If you are my enemy, I will hinder and harm you as long as I have breath in my body.

If he continues at this pace given the structural debt he's adding, we'll have added $94 trillion to the national debt. Add the ~$55 trillion in pre-existing debt obligations. It proves my point exactly - the people here want nothing to do with reasonable, inclusive, centrist policies. A few of you can spout off some rhetoric that sounds intelligent, but overlooks a lot of truth and reason, and ultimately amounts to neo-con spin. The problem is that you believe it. "The problem with these children (some approaching old age now) is that they think that every human being on earth thinks just like they do -- or if not, then those people either do not understand, and must be educated; or are evil, and must be suppressed." I can't think of a better way to describe exactly how the Bush Admin. operated - under the pretense that they were not only logically correct, but divinely correct, that God supported their every move, and anyone who disagreed needed to be silenced. The flipping of sentiments between the party in charge and the party not in charge is incredibly predictable. All of a sudden those who preached executive power under Bush all of a sudden think Obama has way too much power and will lead us to an array of places: hell, communism, fascism, socialism, Nazism, etc. It's all over-dramatic sore loser bullshit that gets really old and does nothing for your party or side of the political spectrum. At least be consistent. If you were okay with executive power, massive government sending/expansion/control under Bush, at least acknowledge that now and admit you dug your own grave. You let this happen. Perhaps if a few pussy little "tea Parties" had been thrown under Bush, we might still have a surplus, and we might not have been in a position for the country to elect a 41-year old black dude from Hawaii with no experience to try to get this shit straightened out, for no other reason than that he was a complete departure from what had taken place for the last two terms. Not that any of this would change your minds, I'm not sure why I am even arguing with people who amount to redneck pricks in trailer parks fucking their mothers and sleeping in cars...

idrinkwhisky, you have one thing right. I don't want "moderates" in my party like you. I only want people who respect the Constitution and the Declaration. You don't. I want people who aren't bigoted against me or some other bunch of people due to their Constitutionally protected faiths - you, sir, are a frothing bigot who I would watch like a hawk around churches, synagogues and Sunday School kids. You and your ilk are likely to hurt them deliberately.

I do hope you "moderates" go fuck yourselves sideways with a broken stick, sir, because I don't give a shit about people who hate me because I think differently and pray often.

You try to cloak your rancid frothing hatred in code words like "right wing fundamentalists crazies hurr" but don't know what the fuck you're referring to - you're just labelling the people you despise. That means you should definitely join the Democrats. They're nearly all bigots just like you, punk.

#37 what complete BS

McCain picked Palin, not the GOP base.  That said she was more popular with the GOP base than McCain was.  And as noted above McCain was the epitome of a moderate GOPer and he got trounced

Steele was a former Lt Governor of a blue state and was well regarded.  He was not a color pick - the Dems are the ones who do that

Only fake conservatives like Meghan McCain are pushing gay marriage for the GOP

Finally the comments about paving and napalming forests and imprisoning minorities are far lefty troll rants that have no basis in reality.

BTW, just because you fuck your mother along with everyone else doesn't mean that rednecks do it. Whatever a "redneck" is? Another class defamed by the left. The original rednecks were southerners who picked their own cotton to make a living. They fed THEMSELVES and didn't depend on socialist tyrants to steal the money from others.

72 I can't stand hypocrites who don't even understand that "Small Government" would not include trying to regulate abortions or gay marriage or any other social issue. A truly limited government would never try align itself with a religion, would never try to prevent two adults from getting married, and would never try to tell people what they should or shouldn't believe in any capacity. It would say fuck that, believe what you want to, we don't give a fuck. But that isn't the GOP- the GOP has made a mockery of the Republican brand. And I for one am pissed about that. They mocked and ridiculed people like Colin Powell and Lincoln Chafee and other moderates, who weren't concerned with evangelicals, abortion, god or gays. Everyone here can pretty much eat a dick. And another thing, idrinkwhisky, you've shown your true colors. You're not a moderate, not a conservative. You're a mind-numbed socialist regionalist bigot ("redneck pricks" "trailer parks" "fucking their mothers").

You're not an American - you're a proto-aristocratic urban drone. You're worthless to America and to all your former neighbors. You're the epitome of Modern Liberalism - unable to see fellow citizens as citizens - you instead think of yourself as superior to them.  That's an anti- and un-American attitude, inculated by years of bowing and scraping to leftist propaganda promising that you're the New Nobility, Destined to be Better than those sub-humans (conservatives) you've been taught to hate all these years.

You're a faithful slave, idrinkwhisky, but all you'll get is a pat on the head from your owners as you trade your onlly precious thing, your vote, for an expression of hatred and power by your owners - the Democrats.

You are right - you won't convince anyone here. It's because you aren't a free man anymore - you're a willing slave, an obedient bigot, and a fucknut troll all rolled up into one shit-eating, bootlicking package of cringing, fawning servility.

75 A few of you can spout off some rhetoric that sounds intelligent, but overlooks a lot of truth and reason, and ultimately amounts to neo-con spin.

Ah, "truth" and "reason". How sweet to the ear! And yet how fungible to the leftist brain. It always boils down to, "If you disagree with me, then you're eeeeevil!" Not, "I disagree with what you say, but I understand where you're coming from."

I'm always amused at people who label themselves "reality-based" and yet find it impossible to discuss things like race and human sexuality in a non-hysterical manner. If you are against gay marriage, then you must be anti-gay! If you believe certain people are disproportionately more likely to commit crimes, then you must be racist! Produce facts and figures to back up your positions? Then you must have fudged the numbers! Or you are simply lying about them! Or the studies were done by other wingnuts!

As I never tire of pointing out to the more clueless lefty ranters who crop up: a theory that explains everything explains nothing; but it is likewise wrong to turn nothing into a creed in and of itself. Keep your mind open, but not so open that your brain falls out. Nature is conservative; conservatism is the default mode of the natural world.

83 You know, IDW's powers of persuasion are so overwhelming, I've decided to abandon 40+ years of political principle and just vote for whomever he thinks I should.

Let's take an example of "small government" thinking of his- abortion. Prior to 1973, abortion was a matter for the states to decide. That's the federalism part of conservativism at work there. It was the liberal, activist court that expanded it into the sphere of the federal government, by finding rights that no one had ever found before, using poor logic. Were that the limit of expansion of the federal government into that arena, it would be one thing. But now we see an expansion from the position that the government may not interfere with the right to abortion to the positive duty of the government to provide funding to execute these abortions. How again is that the small government position?

Re Small Govt - what #77 said

"A truly limited government would never try align itself with a religion, would never try to prevent two adults from getting married, and would never try to tell people what they should or shouldn't believe in any capacity".  A) religion has been an important part of this country since its founding - it is the Dems who are tryin to trash this heritage.  B) Most GOPers wouldn't be that concerned about gay marriage except for the Dems/MSM/Perez Hilton's getting in their face all the time about it and watching unelected judges deciding it is fine and even overriding voters to make it happen, C) The left/Dems have a much longer and well documented history of trying to enforce thought control - go read Liberal Fascism.

Chafee was opposed by the GOP base because, like Specter, he voted more often for the Dems than for the GOP.  Powell was well liked in GOP circles until he was shown to be a Colin first, party second type of person (again like Specter) - he could have had the GOP nomination anytime from '96 onward but didn't go for it.

In sum you have already identified yourself as a liberal and yet here you are trying to tell the GOP how to change itself to appeal to more liberals?  That's not gonna work

You know what gives you away as a left-wing infiltrator, idrinkvirginpinacoladas?  It's your use of "neocon" as a synonym for "far right."  Neoconservatives are actually moderate Democrats, most--but not all--of whom switched to the GOP because of the far-left tilt of the Democrats, especially on foreign policy.  The only people who use "neocon" to describe the right wing of the GOP are people who have not only spent the last eight years foaming at the mouth over Bush, but, more importantly, did so simply because they associated him with the "rednecks."

In short, you are a lying piece of shit.

144 IDW- so much stupid, so little time:

"...but divinely correct, that God supported their every move, and anyone who disagreed needed to be silenced."

Exhibit A, I smell a moonbat. Nice try on implying the bible thumper crap- but your imply-fu is weak and obvious.

Pray tell, who exactly was "silenced" over the last eight years, and how could you tell given the wall of screeching about "Chimpy McBushitler" that went on during that time? Was Tim Robbins silenced? Cindy Sheehan? Was anyone put on a homeland security alert for airing their displeasure, like napolitano put those eeeeeevil right wing tea party protesters? Nope, I guess not.

Further, people on this blog raised unholy hell over the Myers nomination, the stupid Amnesty plan, TARP, and other shite I'm too lazy to look up- we didn't get silenced, we're still here, and none of us went to gitmo, sport.

"If you were okay with executive power, massive government sending/expansion/control under Bush"

No, we weren't, but good try. Lots of howling about NCLB, the stupid health care shite with land whale kennedy, and again TARP around here. And what is this "control" you speak of? Again, you're showing your moonbat bonafides... if you're going to masquerade as a "concerned centrist", best not to hint at your Bushie fascist wet dreams and bible thumper fantasies (see above). Nice strawman though.

"and we might not have been in a position for the country to elect a 41-year old black dude from Hawaii with no experience to try to get this shit straightened out.."

First, you dummy- the plastic messiah is 47, he was born in '61. Second, we were in a position to elect this cypher because he committed election fraud at an unprecedented level to get past (barely) Hillary Clinton. Yeah, it's completely normal to hold the roll call of the delegates via phone and not on the Democratic convention floor...right.

Shit straightened out? Oh, you mean the landslide of horseshit brought on by skeletor pelosi and harry "land baron" reid- you know, when barky the bonehead was the junior senator from my state. Yeah, somebody needed to straighten it out...shame barky has exacerbated all this nonsense- always a grand idea to take a 445 billion dollar deficit and turn it into a 1.6 trillion dollar deficit... yeah, that'll straighten shit right out.

Dude, you need to up your game. You're not a moderate conservative, you're a poorly disguised astroturfing tool. Every post you shat up is rife with barely suppressed lefty screechery, and we are less than entertained.

I'm sue that God, Jesus, and all the Apostles are cheering you on with those words, you fucking hypocrite asshole - sounds a lot like "Love thy enemy" to me.

Well, idrinkboonesfarm, the first two are the same. The last 12 are all fucking dead, so what do I care? As for being a hypocrit, I can love you and still tell you the truth about how bigoted you are. Not telling you would be a sin. So, yes, God the Father and Jesus are approving my truthtelling to you, in hopes you realize that you are no better than any other bigot.

As for hoping you fuck yourself with a broken branch, that was sincere. Doing so would show you how empty and meaningless sexual activity is without it being with your opposite sex marriage partner (in your case, I'm going to guess that it might be a female). Plus, it indicated the depth of righteous anger you have generated by your hateful, intolerant, and disgusting lies.

Also, I am told to try to love my enemy. That doesn't mean my enemy (which you are) is ever going to automatically be my friend. And it does not mean that I am perfect - I'm expected to despise my enemy's wickedness and vileness. And sometimes, I don't love my enemy until he is defeated.

But talking sense to you is like talking to a wall. Once the person's propagandized enough, they can't be reasoned with nor spoken to as a free human being. Too bad, I'm sure you almost were a decent person. Now, though, you're just a willing, bigoted, lickspittle slave.

150 It never ceases to amaze me.  If you read Monty describe the beliefs in -isms of Obama and his ilk-- transnationalism, multiculturalism, etc. you have a 100% accurate view of the Ivory Tower lounge chat view of how the world would be if only everyone were as smart as they.   Something that takes 4 yrs worth of indoctrination for only the brightest students to begin to get is firmly in his grasp and described in a paragraph or two.   They cannot even do that themselves; listen to the longwinded sayer of nothing, Obama, for the prime example.   Monty gets libs better than libs get libs.

Then you read Whiskey and you hear a string of half baked drivel that proves the accuracy of his nic, and nothing more.

The Right truly understands the Left, the Left truly barely understands itself.  Even though it thinks of almost nothing but.  Eventually, there will be strength in that great chasm.   The Left is seemingly incapable of assessing the opposition with any kind of accuracy whatsoever.

162 The Right truly understands the Left, the Left truly barely understands itself.

That's because they have an extremely difficult time dealing with truth and reality.  The truth issue has two aspects.  First, they can't agree that objective truth exists--case in point, check Gabe's original topic above.  Second, the truth of leftist performance in the world over the past century was abysmal.  They can't face that or the countervailing fact that conservatives were right on everything from economics to the Cold War.  And before some left c-word returns to scream about civil rights--anyone on the wrong side of that issue was WRONG.  But the current screeching of civil rights "leaders" about the continued presence of toxic levels of racism in a country with a black President is idiotic.

On the reality front, they can't even admit that some things are beyond our control.  Don;t believe me?  Watch the coming months vis-a-vis Pakistan when all kinds of wild shit will be suggested because "we need to act."  Good luck with that.  And they thought Iraq was difficult--I suggest they listen very, very carefully to Petraeus at this point--he's their last hope on that front.  Sweet, sweet irony.

One thing that is perplexing to me about guys like the whiskey drinker is how they try to argue and insult at the same time-- "You should adopt more centrist policies like Goldwater, you racist redneck neocon motherf-ers!"  Has that ever worked to persuade anybody?

Also, what would possess you to go on your ideological opponent's website and ask, "don't you understand how horrible you are?  I am tired from all the hate I feel for you."

Ultimately, I guess, liberals just can't comprehend any intellectually legitimate reason for being conservative.

Posted by: Matt at April 28, 2009 04:34 PM (0z0tO)

167 sis:

Conservatives have their own "-isms" of course; I don't mean to suggest we don't. I think a lot of right-leaning folks tend to be one-issue voters far more than left-leaning folks are. And American conservatives as a group are more amenable to a big central government than I would like -- but this is historical, going back all the way to the post-Civil War years. The Republicans under Lincoln asserted the power of the Federal government over the states, so I guess it was inevitable that the Republican Party would internalize this.

I think you're right, though, that conservatives understand the philosophies of the left far better than the reverse. The political left -- both in Europe and here -- seem to be unable to conceptualize things except in caricature. Years of postmodernism have robbed them of any critical facilities and any ability to truly understand opposing points of view: for all their talk of conservatives have a Manichaean view of things, it's the left that really has trouble with grey areas. (Look at how they twist themselves into pretzel shapes when trying to justify things they previously abominated, like nuclear energy.)

Young people are liberal by default, so I tend to forgive a certain amount of dunderheadedness based on age. No one is ever quite so idealistic as they are in their 20's. But as the political left has taken over the institutions of education in this country, these young people are marinated in leftism for twelve to eighteen years. The bulwarks of the hard sciences are the only islands in a sea of postmodernist gibberish. Young people have few resources with which to think critically upon leaving college, and so they "miss" the transition from starry-eyed liberal to realistic middle age. Instead they turn into perpetual moral scolds, wondering why the bright happy future they were assured back in college never seems to come to pass.

Age is supposed to bring wisdom, not (necessarily) comfort.

4.  You have deeply disturbing thoughts about your mother, which you project onto others.  (Not surprising; after all, she had you, her third child--not counting the four abortions--at the age of 17, and since you're only 17 yourself, the age difference isn't that much.  Plus, she's fucked your friends, so why should you be left out?)

5.  You have lived in a trailer at some point.  By the way, I have too--I'm doing OK now, but I have had hard times in the past.  There's nothing to be ashamed about in having worked your way up.  Of course, in your case, you didn't work your way out of the trailer; you got kicked out when you tried to feel up the wife of the trailer's owner, at which point you went back to live with mommy.

6.  You are copying off a talking-points sheet from some left-wing group, rather than thinking for yourself.

7.  You think of yourself as a tough guy, and have the butterfly tattoo and navel piercing to prove it.  (Seriously, you probably don't have those specific tattoos and holes.  But the tattoos you do have--and you most certainly do have them--even though you think they make you macho, quite frankly don't.  Dude, you're not in the Hell's Angels.  Deal with it).

8.  You like to talk about how many "people" you've slept with (no gender specified).

9.  You brag frequently to yo homies about slappin dat ho longside da haid.  Even though you are pasty white.

10.  You are a cowardly pussy.

Being conservative = supporting the Constitution.

I'm tired of those bastards in washington assuming they have more power than has been enumerated to them in our founding document.  It's been on-going for 100 years, the scumbags in washington taking little bites mostly but HUGE bites when they can (FDR, Carter, Obama).

If I had 3 wishes:

1) Repeal the 17th amendment.  Give the states back their rightful place in this republic.  They relinquished it by choice, but they fucked us all when they did it.

2) Mandate fixed amounts for contributions for all state and federal elections and make them come from a common pool (taxpayer).  No more Obama gets a bazillion dollars from untraceable credit card donations.... WHAT THE FUCK?

3) Term Limits.  NOW.

Wow, too stupid to pretend to be a CCC. That's special, alright.

Dr. Manhattan, you mentioned the Modern Whigs? I took a brief look at their web site and gave up after reading the last sentence in this section:

Environmental Protection and National Security

Why did we lump the environment with national security? Because eliminating our dependency on foreign oil is a national security issue as it takes away a significant amount of cards from our enemies. For example, cartels are illegal in the US but at the same time, we rely on the OPEC cartel for our oil.

They got anything better than that going for them?

Well, many did, of course. But an (honest) professor of the hard sciences knows that a committee of like-minded peers can't make 2+2=5, no matter how chummy and well-intentioned they are.

Biologists are often (and rather surprisingly) some of the most libertarian-minded people you'll ever meet: they know how savage and results-driven the natural world really is; how capricious and "unfair" it is. Engineers and research chemists, computer scientists and mathematicians: they are often what pass for conservatives at many universities. (They still overwhelmingly vote Democrat, however.)

And who knew Jesus was such a centrist?

Oh yeah, he preached moderation in The Sermon On The Mount as he spoke of getting along with Rome and the Pharisees.and the Sadducees.

Jesus was cool like that -- he just wanted to get along with everyone. For instance, when that women was getting stoned for being a prostitute, Jesus said, "Whoa, maybe you guys shouldn't do that. Unless it's really important to you, I mean. But maybe you should only throw a couple of stones, real light like...just sayin'."

I know that I would have voted against Sebelius because she's an anti-gun extremist.  Even more so, IMHO, than someone like Chuckie the Evil Doll Schumer, since he at least comes from New York, whereas she comes from a state that hasn't voted Democrat since 1964 (maybe because they didn't want a moderate Republican like Goldwater ).

BTW, I notice that abortion is the first thing that comes to idrinkvirginpinacoladas' small mind as the motivation here.  This is typical of the low-life, urban trash, punk rock, alternating meth- and pot-smoking losers like him.  His concept of  "freedom" is "free from all those religious hypocrites judging me," i.e., free from having churchgoers being allowed to have their own opinions about his immoral lifestyle.  Abortion is key to that lifestyle.  (Of course, even though he has a hard time admitting it to himself, he doesn't really benefit from abortion, since he couldn't get laid with a fistful of dollars in a whorehouse).

Remember when that great moderate, Winston Churchill said, "We shall fight them on beaches, we shall fight them in the fields, except on Ramadan. Oh, and we probably won't fight them in heavily populated areas."

If we're going to rewrite history to moderate past Republicans, we might as well call it The Mediocre Depression.

269 joan, you can be such a hypothetical, um, hypocritcal, um.... you can be nasty in a nasty way sometimes. Problem is for you, I don't buy it. You aren't a nasty person. It's like the first time I said "fuck you" to somebody. They laughed at me.

The defection of Arlen Specter further demonstrates the problem at hand - you can't be a moderate Republican anymore - you will be pushed out of the party by fringe-right conservatives.

Yeah, kinda like you can't be a moderate Democrat anymore.......just ask Lieberman.

276 D-ling, I'm afraid you got the quote wrong, it's

"We shall debate them on the beaches.  Negotiate with them in the fields.  And let them have our streets, because if we just give them what they want, they'll leave us alone."

278 All of you pig-fucking neo-con goons can eat my centrist dick. Hey, you had your boy Johnny Mac at the head of the ticket this past election. How'd that work out? Free clue: if you pose as Democrat-lite, why should anyone vote for you and not the real deal?
