Obama Gives Speech On Patriotism
— DrewM

It's being billed as a major speech but listening to it now, it's pretty much about Obama and how "I will never question the patriotism of others in this campaign. And I will not stand idly by when people question mine.”

Now he's into the 'American can be made better' is really patriotism stuff.

Fearless prediction...Andrew Sullivan will LOVE this speech.

He does have a lapel pin on. I can't tell if it's one of those false patriotism flag pins or not.

He's broken it down to 3 elements...a 'gut love of country', a willingness to speak up when the government is wrong and sacrifice/service.

There's absolutely nothing new or interesting about this speech but it will be hailed as some sort of revelation about what it means to be patriotic.

In the sacrifice section he takes a swipe at Wesley Clark, without naming him, for his remarks on McCain.

You can read the speech here.

One favorite quote:

And it is up to us to teach our children a lesson that those of us in politics too often forget: that patriotism involves not only defending this country against external threat, but also working constantly to make America a better place for future generations.

When we pile up mountains of debt for the next generation to absorb, or put off changes to our energy policies, knowing full well the potential consequences of inaction, we are placing our short-term interests ahead of the nation’s long-term well-being. When we fail to educate effectively millions of our children so that they might compete in a global economy, or we fail to invest in the basic scientific research that has driven innovation in this country, we risk leaving behind an America that has fallen in the ranks of the world. Just as patriotism involves each of us making a commitment to this nation that extends beyond our own immediate self-interest, so must that commitment extends beyond our own time here on earth.

Enacting a Democratic domestic agenda is the highest form of patriotism! This was interesting...

That is the liberty we defend – the liberty of each of us to pursue our own dreams. That is the equality we seek – not an equality of results, but the chance of every single one of us to make it if we try. That is the community we strive to build – one in which we trust in this sometimes messy democracy of ours, one in which we continue to insist that there is nothing we cannot do when we put our mind to it, one in which we see ourselves as part of a larger story, our own fates wrapped up in the fates of those who share allegiance to America’s happy and singular creed.

Thank you, God Bless you, and may God Bless the United States of America.

If only he meant the liberty part. It's somewhat at odds with his collectivist and redistributionist policy prescriptions.

Wow! So we won't be comparing outcomes anymore? No more counting white noses and black noses to determine when racism is/is not at play?

The Wesley Clark swipe at McCain now seems perfectly timed to coincide with this speech.

It attempts to put some doubt in the minds of Americans about McCain (another swipe was made by some other guy I just read about at RightWingNutHouse) to counter all the legitimate doubts about Obama and allows Obama to be "generous" to McCain and appear to be above it all. I noticed he 'rejected' this in a far more unequivocal fashion than all the others.

What a guy.

A little too convenient for me. Obama might be the author of the whole thing. He's that ruthless and that big a creep.

6 I really don't think the Obamessiah will denounce Clark. The nutroots would hate him for it. They never really cared about Wright or that wigger Catholic priest, but Clark they adore.

Andy McCarthy @ NRO nails the phonyness of the O:

Obama: "I will never question anyone else's patriotism in this campaign"

How admirable!  The only other "anyone" in this campaign is John McCain.  He's not gonna question McCain's patriotism?  What a tremendous concession!  Tune in tomorrow when Obama announces he will never question whether Shaquille O'Neal is really tall.

Those who disagree, suck cock by choice.

12 He actually was shameless enough to use the "dissent is the highest form of patriotism" line, but at least had the good grace not to attribute it to Jefferson, which is what Dems typically do when they make shit up.

Let me fix that for you, Senator.

"I didn't serve my country in uniform, but my opponent did.  However, it's just as noble to go to Harvard, join some church for street cred, be a community organizer, hang with unrepentant terrorists and criminals, do the Chicago city council bit, run for congress against a guy whose sealed divorce record must not have been sealed quite well enough, have no discernable accomplishments, and run for president.  That makes me a patriot, right?"

20 "I will never question the patriotism of others in this campaign."

O RLY?

“Somebody noticed I wasn’t wearing a flag lapel pin and I told folks, well you know what? I haven’t probably worn that pin in a very long time. I wore it right after 9/11. But after a while, you start noticing people wearing a lapel pin, but not acting very patriotic. Not voting to provide veterans with resources that they need. Not voting to make sure that disability payments were coming out on time.

“My attitude is that I’m less concerned about what you’re wearing on your lapel than what’s in your heart. And you show your patriotism by how you treat your fellow Americans, especially those who served. You show your patriotism by being true to our values and our ideals and that’s what we have to lead with is our values and our ideals.”

For most people on the left, patriotism really means love of the America that could be rather than the America that currently exists. That's why they usually include criticism or dissent in the definition of patriotism, so that they can be patriotic while criticizing the country. Now you can be patriotic (in the classic sense) and still criticize the country, but criticism in itself does not imply patriotism.

To paraphrase Jonah Goldberg, if a man continually criticizes his wife and declares that he loves the woman that she might become one day, it would not be unreasonable to conclude that he just doesn't like his wife all that much.

...when we fail to educate...

...when we fail to invest...

There's a certain rhetorical pitch that Democrats take that's like a dog whistle to me: the "we need to" construction.

Whenever I hear some patronizing Democrat tell me what "we need to do," I know the purple probe is coming, sans Crisco. This nifty little device intimates a relationship (who doesn't want to be wanted?!) but actually reeks of collectivism, of sublimation to the herd. One of the more annoying aspects of this is the implicit blame--I haven't failed to educate anyone, because I haven't tried to and don't intend to, thankyouverymuch Senator Candyman.

For these folks, "you" and "your" are dangerous concepts, pejoratives to be applied to selfish, inconsiderate conservatives. The Constitution might as well be Goldstein's forbidden book to these collectivizers.

I've been hearing a lot of "what we can do" BS from Brockobomma. I expect to feel it in the wallet five months from now.

Fraggles, the future you dreamed of is near. We, as patriots, will make America the place that it should be.  It will be just like you think Europe is. Not what Europe is actually like, just what you assume europe might be like after seeing a few statistics and groveling to some jerk-off about how sorry you are about some random thing (mcdonalds, global warming, not stopping the crisis in _____ etc...).

It will  be a bold new world of arts and crafts, "free" healthcare, peace (not the real kind, the "if it wasn't on the daily show it wasn't important" kind.), global cooperation because I am so cool, small group work, talking about our feelings, saving animals, men will want to date feminists rather than just ditch them for actual women, all people will get along because we will all be unified and agree that my vision for the future is only matched by how awesome I am.

All hail the lightworker. Do not think too much, just feel.
