Ron Silver. Speaks fluent Mandarin. He's no dumb actor, either; he is, I think, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and he's been on consular missions to China.
Trouble is, I fucking hate this guy, and I always will. I look at this guy talking about winning the war on terror, and the only thing I can think of is that sleazy senator he played in Timecop.
Nice guy? Brave guy? Smart guy? This fucker killed Jean Claude Van Damme's wife, the delectable Mia Sara. What, we're all of a sudden just giving people a pass for that?
Sorry. Not this cowboy. Not on my watch.
But seriously, this was great stuff:
We will never forgive. Never forget. Never excuse!
At the end of World War II, General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Allied
Commander of the South Pacific, said:
"It is my earnest hope - indeed the hope of all mankind - that from this
solemn occasion a better world shall emerge out of the blood and carnage of
the past, a world found upon faith and understanding, a world dedicated to the
dignity of man and the fulfillment of his most cherished wish for freedom,
tolerance and justice."
This is a war we did not seek.
This is a war waged against us.
This is a war to which we had to respond.
History shows that we are not imperialists . . . but we are fighters for freedom and democracy.
Even though I am a well-recognized liberal on many issues confronting our
society today, I find it ironic that many human rights advocates and outspoken members of my own entertainment community are often on the front lines to protest repression, for which I applaud them but they are usually the first ones to oppose any use of force to take care of these horrors that they
Somewhere in New York, Danny Glover just said "Fuck Ron Silver."
Danny Glover says that now. But he was conspicuously silent about Mia Sara's murder, wasn't he?
I will give Silver credit, however (for something other than that great speech). He's a very underrated actor. Know why? I actually thought, for a moment, that Alan Dershowitz was a *human being*, you know, with feelings and stuff.
THAT'S a master thespian.

Ron Silver is a good actor.
He won a Tony while on Broadway.
He was also in one of my favorite films, Enemies, a Love Story (screenplay, by Roger L. Simon)
But last night he was not acting.
He was passionate, angry, defiant.
The guy's got major balls.
I'd like to think that there are many more like him in the Celebrosphere, especially ex-New Yorkers.
OK, now I'm upset.
Like, where the fuck is Matthew Broderick? He has spent his whole life in NYC, and what, he can't come out and say something, anything, like, "Hey, good thing those Army guys closed the terrorist training camps and stuff in Afghanistan or wherever, 'cause we wouldn't want another whole section of Manhattan vaporized or another several thousand people killed." Is that asking too much?
Or at the DNC, they light candles to memorialize 9/11? Like that's gonna' help? On what fucking planet to these people live?
How about this? We go to where these bastards trains and live and we kill them so they don't kill us?
Ever think of that one Brainiacs?
Do we really need to see for the umpteenth-thousandth-fucking time some jerk-off screaming about "Fascist Repugs!" or a lame photoshop placard that "Bush is the Real Terrorist?"
Is that really necessary to show us your art project again? We got it the first time, you're an asshole. Now, go home and kill yourself before you hurt someone.
I mean really, are these people joking? or are they really that fucking stupid?
OK, the Republicans are Evil, they're corrupt. Democracy is in jeapordy. The Constitution is being shredded. OK, you're right. You win, you're right. Just go the fuck home because there's a war on you idiots, and the adults here still have work to do.

I actually saw Ron Silver on Broadway (or off-Broadway).
I think it's the only play I ever saw-- David Mamet's Speed the Plow, with Joe Mantegna and Madonna.

Here are Ron Silver's crimes:
His portrayal of Alan Derschowitz in Reversal of Fortune. Caveats: 1, he didn't write the script, and furthermore, Dershowitz was a real egotistical dick about having anything negative about him in the film and 2, even Alan Dershowitz is pretty good on the WoT these days.
Killing Mia Sara, who every heterosexual man has been in love with since Ferris Buehler's Day Off.
Being a gonzo Clinton lover in the nineties. Worst of all: during Clinton's 1992 inauguration, there was an overflight of military aircraft. Ron Silver said in an interview of the jets, "I can't believe these are finally ours," or something like that.
Playing a dick in just about every movie he ever made.
Looking like a dick, generally.
All those crimes are expunged from the record due to his successful rehabilitation, however.
I loved his speech. It was good, tough, and yes, the guy's got big cajones for delivering it.
