Next Step: Does Obama Request That Dingy Harry Host Him In The Senate?
— Ace

Although joint sessions of Congress take place in the House, there's not any particular reason Harry Reid couldn't invite Obama to the Senate.

Unfortunately for the GOP, this would result in increased coverage and public interest, as this would now be drama.

But unfortunately for Obama, it would still be Obama speaking. The same droning SCOAMF that never budges the public opinion needle when he talks.

If something like this were to happen, the story line would be Crazed House Declares War on President and the like. Not that I think the media has much power to budge the needle, either.

Our response would be to call attention to his delays and vacations. Is this the only day Obama doesn't have a late-afternoon tee-time?

Meanwhile, Obama's defenders are "fuming.

Republicans say Obama’s timing was intended to eclipse a major GOP presidential debate.

By the afternoon – as word of Boehner’s request leaked — Obama’s defenders were fuming over Boehner’s cheek in suggesting Sept. 8th — which would conflict with the NFL’s opening night matchup between the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints.

Update: At Hot Air, Fox's Ed Henry reports the White House claiming they did clear the Wednesday date with Boehner, who lodged no objections when it was discussed.

This could have been Boehner saying "Let me check," or it could have been him making an error and not asking anyone else first.

He already asked for the joint session, and Boehner took the "House v. Senate/President" element out of it when he offered him the 8th.  Using the Senate alone for a speech but one day earlier would be too baldly political even for them.

I think the public is done with Dick. He still thinks another speech is going to turn things around for him, but it never does. As a matter of fact, he usually shoots himself in the foot.

The public's tuning him out.

17 Careful ace they are going to start saying you are curious. Obama did not just stumble his way to the Presidency, that Alinsky stuff works. The President assumes he would win the PR of the House not inviting him. I am sure that the Grey Lady and various nightly newses are willing to play along. The way to do it is invite him on a different date. Yes, it will look like politics but that is what it is. They are doing it and do not care what the independents are going to "feel" about it. Boehner needs to say sure, the 8th is open. Or whatever day his next fundraiser is.

57 Barack Obama is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure.

Also, no, I don't think he could ask Harry Reid to host him in the Senate.  For one thing, I don't think the chamber is arranged in such a way to make that practical.  For another, it just shows, again, how basely partisan this move was in the first place.

It was Obama's choice to request a joint session of congress (something not even normally done for SOTU until relatively recently) for what will basically be yet another no-policy speech.  It was, further, his choice to do it specifically to coincide with the GOP Debate.

Now, he's stuck.  If he moves it to just the Senate, he a) doesn't get the same optics and b) is shown for the complete partisan he is (remember, that's still a bad thing for him, and his advisers know it, even if he doesn't). If he accepts Boehner's terms, he has taken some political damage (being shown to be "subservient" in some ways to the Speaker), and if he just says, "fine, I'll just hold my own address" everyone is forced to ask, "Then why did he want an address on the 7th during the GOP debate?"

Remember that, right now, what he can say is, "Yes, this is urgent, but I can't do anything anyway.  So I was waiting for Congress to be back in session- I just didn't realize the scheduling difficulties that existed."  Something it's easy for the MFM to paper over.  If he does anything other than accept John Boehner's invitation (perhaps with a "scolding" letter about how important this is, but understanding the necessity of the delay, or somesuch), he blows through any feeble illusion he had been able to establish.

66 This whole thing is an attempt to set up Perry, because the Administration/Politico/BSNBC thinks he might be susceptible when thinking on his feet and having to respond to Obama's lawyerese jibber jabber would be difficult, although I think Perry holds up fine in that situation.

The debate will center around trying to catch the participants in a gray area of what Obama said earlier, and when that goes too well for them it will shift to that plant, Huntsman, bringing up social issues to try to make them look out of touch and dumb.

I don't understand why media outlets have to be the ones running these things, it is not like they would fail to cover it if the candidates all got together and had an honest and open debate. What we really need is a (R) debate hosted by Ace!

95 Let us remember the last Oval Office address, when SCOAMF came out looking like an Ommpa-Loompa with a glandular problem; barked and whined from behind a podium for a while, and then slunk back into his cave.  Somebody at the White House must have decided their only hope to get a message across is with an audience clapping at the applause lines.  Too little, too late.

1- it's obvious the request was meant as counter-programming to the GOP debate

2- if 0bama declines another date, it looks like the speech isn't that important- just obama wanting his way

3- if the 'speech' happens on Thur 9/8, only MSNBC junkies will see it

4 if the content of the 'speech' - 3 words- J O B S- is really so important, then 0bama should accept the earliest available date- he won't, of course

Someone needs to point out the Financial Impact on this issue. In the first place, the debates are being held at the Reagan Library which is located in CALIFORNIA, which is a Union Only state governing contracts for:
Staging
Lighting
Cameras
Sound
Satellite trucks
Transcribers for Close Captioning
Security
Production Assistants
Grips
Gaffers
Sound Crew
Camera Crew
Caterers
Stylists
Legal and Insurance
Advertising Production and Schedules

and booking Satellite Time

+ plus a million more things involved in the “over 1 year of planning and promotion” of the event. All of these contracts have already been drawn up and signed for some time. In a Union state, there are significant penalties for “running late” or rescheduling. IF and that’s a BIG IF, all of your staffing is even available. Nor does it include the costs that the contracts and expenses the campaigns have already incurred for travel, lodging and on site staffing.

This is a very big Financial hit that Obama is asking a number of people to take on his behalf.

Another set of costs on this, is the loss of advertising dollars that will be experienced by the Networks as well as the local affiliates when he does finally give this speech.

Seems to me that rather than play polite politics with this dunder headed move by the Obama Campaign, that a really smart reporter (or Speaker of the House) would be on the phone with the Accountant for the Debate and put a number of people employed and $$$ involved to Obama’s little temper tantrum.

Talk about a jobs lost issue!

That's why it's so frustrating to the MFM.  They know when they attack the "Tea Party", they're attacking a national mood, a national movement so to speak, not an organization.

Well, I suppose you'd be the resident expert on being an ass.

So, brey tell me, why is it that Boehner "is just being an ass" because he won't let the SCOAMF overshadow the long-planned GOP debate, but your man-child idol isn't "just being an ass" for asking for time specifically to conflict with his opposition's debate?

Wait.  That would require consistency of thought for you to answer.  You have neither.

I withdraw my question.

And, I quote, "get your shine-box."

What?

Obama came up with a weird request out of the blue without a private discussion, which happens to preempt a presidential debate, which is more important than Obama repeating last year's jobs speech.

'No reason'?

What a stupid summary.  There's a lot of reason to stand up to Obama's stunt.  It's Obama who is being an ass for the sake of being an ass.

As for solutions, that's what the debate is for.  Obama is standing in the way of the real solutions by trying to interfere with democracy again.

Enhancements in our nation's highways, railways, water systems, electrical grids, and delivery networks for information and for energy have been rebuilt to accommodate the dynamic activity we will see in the years and decades to come. In short, it was 800 billion dollars well spent."

208 Gotta love it.  Obama makes a request in private and then instantly goes to the press about it, before there's any time to respond, whining that the GOP never responded.

And the lefty troll is upset with the GOP?

What for?  For daring to have a debate?  Is it that scary to think the GOP would want to explain its solutions to the American people that Obama has to try to interfere?

We all know Obama is probably a one term president, so the debate is very important.  One of those Republicans is going to be the president who tries to fix Obama's failures.  We need to know what they have to say about it.

Obama needs to know his place.  He's a lame duck.  He can have his chance to debate and speak at times other than when the GOP is having debates.  All other US Presidents knew how to work with such schedules.  It's just basic respect for the country.

Obama's smart enough to know he's messed up.  Selfish stunts are not helpful. If he ego can't take a resignation, the least he could do is shut up while the adults debate the real solutions.

Sounds like something a fucking communist would say about a fucking dictator.

Do democrats have any arguments that aren't dumb hero worship?  Obama has decided it's time to 'lead' on jobs many times and it's always failed.

Obamacare is the reason the jobs went away.  That's well proven.

Troll can't be serious.  No one, but no one, believes that this speech has any more economic significance than the other seven or twelve or fifty he's already given.  Even troll doesn't.  The debate will have more of an effect on the economy than more gum-beating by Hussein the Hapless.  More shovel-ready BS like high-speed rail projects and ethanol plants, more windmills to tilt at.  More platitudes.  Have at it, Zero.

It was a COMMAND from a falling-poll-numbers-enraged SCOAMF, and when some above-average-IQ spear-carrier tried to kinda, ya know, respectfully suggest that, Mr. President, I think that maybe...and got bitch-slapped back into his chair for his trouble, 'Downfall'-style.

But seriously, nobody in this forum, much less a paid-to-think advisor, would've wandered into this minefield.  What are they going to do to counter what looks like a pretty dam' fine play by the Speaker?

Concerning the debate at the Reagan Library I give you the following to ponder:
1) It has been scheduled for months.
2) People have planned to travel to the event for months.
3) It's insulting to Nancy Reagan.
4) It's insulting to President Reagan's memory.
5) It will cost the hosting network a ton of money to change the date and time now.
6) Do you really want to piss off more people when you don't have anything to say?

honest question...is anyone on this site seriously engaged in the goal of finding solutions for our country? or do y'all just enjoy mucking in crap all day with nonsense and mocking our President?

Honest answer: Both.

Barack Obama is a failure as President. Ace, his cobloggers and many, many commenters daily offer serious ideas that would alleviate many of the country's woes. Here's my input for the day: High gasoline prices are hurting people and our economy. President Obama, however, wishes to keep the current high gasoline taxes in place. Where I live, gas is almost $4 a gallon. Barack Obama went on record saying $5 a gallon would be better. He could reduce the price of gasoline tonight if he wanted to, but he won't. So, honest question: Do you agree with me or with President Obama?

As for the mockery, most of the material comes from the White House itself. Consider: Obama said he wants to bankrupt major players in the coal industry. He also wants more electric cars. But half of the electricity generated in this country comes from coal.

I reach one of two conclusions. The President of the United States is either a sorcerer or a clusterf*ck. I deem the latter to be more likely.

If there's a third possibility, please let us know.

None of it matters.  If he wants to do that, let him.  This (the setting for such a gathering) is such inside baseball there is absolutely no "drama" for most of America.  Everyone is going to be watching - figuratively, if not literally - the Republican debates.  Anyone swayable wants to see if Perry is the real deal or if one of the others, especially Romney and Bachmann, is an acceptable alternative to Obama.  (Actually, many - enough? - have already decided Romney is an acceptable alternative to Obama based on recent polls.)

Of course, there is one counter move for the GOP.  Sarah Palin could also speak at 8 pm on Wednesday.  That would be fun.

Why bother mocking Obama when he makes an ass of himself and the country on a daily basis.

What hasn't Obama fucked up?  In 2009 Obama touted the green energy miracle Solyndra. and today it filed for bankruptcy.  It was the beneficiary of $535 million in loan guarantees from the federal government.  Translated, Obama purchased votes with taxpayer money to the tune of $535 million and the green solution went teats up.

Obama’s defenders were fuming over Boehner’s cheek in suggesting Sept. 8th — which would conflict with the NFL’s opening night matchup between the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints.

OK, so NFL > Gaseous Platitudes About Jobs With No Follow Through > Debate.

A debate is a political affair, the President's speech is a national one that is critical step in building this country's economy. It's clear one is more important than the other.

Boehner did fine.  The people who are paying attention know what the score is.  The people who are not paying attention are only thinking "Another speech?" and then going back to trying to figure out how to pay their bills with no job and grocery and gas prices sky rocketing.

360 Obama has lost the country. It really doesn't matter what he does anymore. His policy DNA is all over the place and the populace notes, "Jeeze, what kinds of mutations are these? Kill them!" He simply cannot and will not change who he is because he's a reflexive ideologue steered by puppets to politick messaging over substance. America is simply rejecting him because the consequences are so evident. The detrimental impact cannot be spun anymore (much as the MFM and Democrats, BIRM, try).

Events out of the Administration's control are the only hope Obama has. Anything he touches now is practically doomed to fail whether by accident or design.

But, of course, she's a typical white person, so that excuses it I suppose.

I'd love to see Nancy record a message to the President asking him to reconsider his choice of dates.

I said politically speaking.  But I was wrong.  Because Obama is losing Independents, so actually more than half of the people who are participating in the country's political process are interested in the outcome of the GOP debate because more than half of the country is entertaining the possibility of not voting for Obama.

BTW, did you just call Obama an idiot, because he's the one who wants a joint session of Congress and the last time I checked Bachmann and Paul are both in Congress.

So either Obama is so out of touch with what is happening that he is totally unaware of the fact that there was a debate being hosted by former First Lady Nancy Reagan or Obama is playing political games.  You can choose which, but either one does not help him with voters.

The Speaker received a letter from Obama requesting a joint session. (This usually occurs after the president consults with the leaders of both chambers but did not happen in this case.) Since the Speaker makes the invitation, it was to his (Boehner's) discretion to then invite Obama to address the Congress. He did not do so, which means he did not accept the date.
