New York Times to Unload Boston Globe For Less Than 10% of the Price They Bought It At
— Ace

They bought the Globe for $1.2 billion. Seems incredible now, doesn't it? They hope to unload it for $100 million.

Making the sale more difficult is the fact that the NYT is currently on the hook for $110 million in pension liabilities, which a buyer might agree to pay for, but the New York Times wants... cash.

Let me throw my mind back in time to 1993 to see what I can remember. My memory might be wrong on this point, but I believe, at the time, there was quite a lot of belief that a company's brand recognition -- the size it occupied in "mindspace," I think was the sort of buzzword used -- was more valuable than any tangible asset.

There was a belief that all of these media companies were substantially undervalued and that they would own the future -- if "mindspace" is the big thing, then the most important companies would be not only those that cast a long shadow in the public's mindspace but whose business was actually colonizing the mindspace of their programmed drones customers.

If I'm remembering right, there were a lot of big media acquisitions and mergers between, say, 1988 and 1996. I had the feeling that a lot of companies trying to get bigger for the big Keiretsu Wars coming in the near Neuromancer-like future.

Yeah. Remember all the stupid things smart people used to believe?

I don't know how all of these mergers and acquisitions worked out. I think many of the entertainment companies are still profitable, though I don't know if particular purchases (like Sony's then-huge purchase of Columbia Studios) actually wound up making money for the purchaser.

It certainly does seem that newspapers and magazines were the big losers, and most people not named Rupert Murdoch who sunk lots of money into major "mindspace" newspaper properties took a bath.

I hear you can buy Newsweek for nickel.

I was going to say "Maybe I was just watching Rising Sun too much on cable." It turns out the movie version actually came out in 1993, when the NYT bought the Globe.

Now let's go find Eddie Sakamura, kohai.

Oh, and speaking of embarrassing auctions.

Here's the best part:

The Times Co. has rebuffed proposals that exceeded $100 million in the past. In 2011, Freedom Communications Inc. CEO Aaron Kushner, publisher of the Orange County Register and other California papers, offered more than $300 million, according to another person familiar with the deal who asked not to be identified because the matter was private. His offer included the assumption of both qualified and unqualified pensions. The Times Co. turned down the offer because it didn't include enough cash up front, according to another person, who also requested not to be named because the talks weren't public.

104 Sven's post remind me of my first speech recognition test after I got a cochlear implant. The audiologist was saying words, then sentences, and having me repeat them, or what I thought she said, back to her. After one sentence I paused and said, "Yeah, pretty sure I didn't get that one right." She asked me to say what I thought she said so she could figure out what sounds in particular I was getting wrong, so I did. I'm pretty sure she did not say, "Would you like a chocolate reach around." Yeah, we both laughed til tears were running down our faces. Best audiologist ever.

305 So the prosecution is having another great day, right? I think the rest of the Horde might be able to describe it better, what with me not watching and all, but I'm going on the record as saying, "second verse, same as the first." So, let's recap. We have one witness (who also happens to be the defendant) who has a story. As far as the public knows, his story is highly consistent with the evidence. Any claim he has made (or that has been made for him) about that night has not been refuted by the evidence, and in many cases has been confirmed by that same evidence. He says, "dude attacked me." On the other hand, we have a non-witness who claimed she could "hear" whether or not grass was wet who (at least) has proven to have all the memory of a pole-axed goldfish, and (more likely) perjured herself. She says, "asldkfjasdk abgoiwerk boijask" which I think translates to "Yeah, creepy-ass cracka did it, 'cause he's a creepy-ass cracka." And now, there's another witness (for the state) who says, "Yeah, dude was totally messed up," (which further corroborates the defendant's story). Yeah, I'm taking "prosecution has given up" with a little money on the higher pay-out "the fix is in" just in case.
