New Year's Eve Afternoon Open Thread
— DrewM

It's snowing where I am so....starting a fire in the fireplace and settling in for a Band of Brothers DVD marathon. Out of respect, I'll let the fire die before Bastogne and The Breaking Point (if I get that far).

I wish the DVD extras were a little better with the series but that's a minute quibble when you consider how great the series is.

Interesting note...Band of Brothers premiered on HBO the night of September 9th...2001. Certainly a timely reminder just as we were about to need to call on the dedication and sacrifice of another generation of heroes.

What do you guys have going on today and tomorrow? FTR- I don't really care, I'm just trying to start the thread off.

Oh yeah....Happy New Year to all you wonderful degenerate morons!

Worth every minute of your time, plus there is romance for couple watching.

Fabulous mini-series....should be run in every junior and high school...it would combat the I hate America and I hate Jew junk that is being taught there.  There is nudity (of the jews) but these kids are being taught how to "fist" so seeing people going in to be gassed without their clothes on shouldn't stop this viewing.

76 We are soooo screwed;

On December 26, two days after Nigerian Omar Abdulmutallab allegedly attempted to use underwear packed with plastic explosives to blow up the Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight he was on, and as it became clear internally that the Administration had suffered perhaps its most embarrassing failure in the area of national security, senior Obama White House aides, including chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, David Axelrod and new White House counsel Robert Bauer, ordered staff to begin researching similar breakdowns -- if any -- from the Bush Administration.

So the first order of business wasn't to find out where "the system" broke down, but to look for mistakes made by the Bush administration they could feed to Keefums?

Happy New Year to you and all morons, Drew.  I'm awaiting 'The Pacific', due out in March 2010...the story follows 3 Marines through the Island Hopping Campaign, among them Medal of Honor recipient John Basilone.  Same production crew and HBO...ought to be fucking amazing, like Band of Brothers.  (I hope...dear Lord I hope...praying that Jar Jar Binks doesn't make an appearance, or Sophia Coppola dying on the opera stairs...)

Loved, loved, loved Band of Brothers, apart from the Crossroads episode where Hanks and Speilberg couldn't resist sermonizing about how horrible war is.  To their credit, I guess, they allowed a clip of Winters (the real one) saying the German SS kid flashbacks were a load of crap.

Here's hoping Pacific doesn't wind up a craptastic "War-is-bad-m'kay?" homily.

My wife and I are going out on NYE for the first time in many years. I figure that we'll have dinner then head into San Francisco and see what's going on. Maybe there'll be some anarchists rioting while the police stand by under orders to not interfere. Maybe there will be some dykes on bikes or leather guys out, some trannies with razor stubble. Perhaps the bike riders will be out harassing drivers while the police stand by under orders... Hey, we might go watch the sea lions if they haven't all left. A typical night in San Francisco.

134 @129 - My point wasn't made clear, then.  I'm not saying war isn't bad, just that there's a difference between showing what happens in war, and sermonizing about it.  I defy anyone to say that Band of Brothers 'celebrated' war.  Nevertheless, Hanks just had to insert a sappy, mawkish, MASH episode in the series that felt (to me) completely out of place given the portrayal of Winters.  And for the antiwar folks, the line between war-is-bad and war-is-unnecessary can be hard to spot.  Yeah, war is bad, but like some poet said, it's not the worst of things.  And while we shouldn't celebrate war, we should celebrate those that wage it on our behalf.

Oh, just something for whereistherum.

I lived in LA for a long time.. One night I was working on New Yrs Eve, and was talking to a pair of Canadian nurses. I asked them what they were going to do the next day and they just said something like spend the day off. Turns out they lived in Altadena. I then inquired if they had to drive thru Pasadena in order to get home.

"Yes, we do, why do you ask?"

Imagine their chagrin when I told them what they were about to go through.

I learned later that it took forever for them to get home that day.

But Middle America likes to bring their campers, RVs and other assorted large vehicles onto the tiny streets of Pasadena. And they don't know how to drive among angry CA drivers. Rather than get out of the way they panic and drive even slower.

I remember being at a very crowded bar. There was a great band playing and everyone was having a great time. But when the clock struck midnight I just remember sighing and thinking "I'm dreading this year". Unfortunately my fear(s) were realized and it was truly a shiteous year. However...

We made it through and we're probably stronger than we could have imagined. I *never* imagined what has transpired in the conservative movement over the past year. And that gives me hope for the months to come.*

186 175 My dad is a former (I know, no such thing) Marine. He served in Korea. He survived Chosin. Having listend to his stories for nearly 50 years, it waspretty ugly over there. It was war, after all and not a lot of good things happened. One good thing, he came home and I live in a country where we can talk about anything we want. Some say he was not fighting for that. That is a pretty miopic view of world politics, if you ask me. But to my Ol' Marine, Salty Dog, Leather Neck dad and all that follow in his boot prints....SEMPER FI IN 2010!     Holy Crap, Rightzilla!  Your dad is a fricking hero!  Chosin was horrible, the fact your dad survived is incredible.  I read a really good book about it over Thanksgiving, "The Last Stand of Fox Company" by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin (I bought it at the airport to read on the plane ride to Philadelphia).  It was so good, my brother and my 12 year old nephew read it while when I was done.  If you haven't read it, you should.    Thank your dad for his service, and please give him a big hug from me!  And a big thank you and hug to all you morons who have served or are currently serving.  The U.S. military absolutely rocks (always has!)

The other thing about shooting guns in the air. There used to be a video of the LAPD taking cover under a freeway overpass as all the guns went off on nrys eve.

The local stations in LA showed that for years.

188 shiteous? Can I borrow that term?

Posted by: hutch1200 at December 31, 2009 10:57 AM (mk0vS)

189 I have had a year for sure. As many, lots with the economy, family stuff, work. But even with the state of this union, I am rallied by the sheer fall of this administrations support and the hope it brings in the next election. I don't just want us to win. Winning means nothing. I want us to prevail with the mores and values of the true America we all know and love!

191 jewells,
Thanx for the warning and advice. He doesn't drink (that I know of), but he's eighteen and first year college and all the things I remember are coming back to haunt me.

On the other hand, I got through it - marginally okay.

192 Hutch, Oh, I wasn't talking about you guys. Not worried about y'all since I know you're responsible people. I'm talking about the idiots in Mexico LA who fire guns in the air every new year's. Every year the LAPD and LASD has to announce it's a felony to fire your weapons into the air.

194 We have all seen the bad guys in the Iran,Iraq,Syria, and displaced groups of people from Israel, ETC All firing AK47's on full automatic up into the air.. I wonder how many of their own people they have killed. I bet nobody confronts them about this when it happens.

195 For the fourth consecutive year, watching the ball drop from 45th Street. It's neither as fun as you might imagine nor as bad as you might fear, but it's the one night a year where living inside the cordoned zone pays off. My guests and I get to cross police barricades at will, popping out the front door to join the throng at 11:30 and back home by 12:30.

Flirting with happy, polite and comely tourists, up to our ankles with bottles of frozen pee, the envy of teens across America convinced that standing on a cold streetcorner would be the epitome of cool, classy fun -- what more could a girl ask?

Flash- he'll be okay.  It was by Gods grace that my son made it thru that New Years several years ago.  Been thru alot with him, but he's turned into a great young man.  He's been unemployed for over a year now and that would tear down the spirit of even the strongest person.  He always stays positive though and I'm very proud of him.

200 178 What in God's name compels a person to think it's a good idea to shoot a gun in the air? I know most people have zero knowledge of physics, but even the dumbest shit person knows what goes up eventually comes down.     I don't know, but for some reason, those idiots in the middle east are always doing that when they celebrate anything.  I bet more Palestinians have been killed by their own people shooting off  their weapons in the air than have been killed by Israelis.

Posted by: runningrn at December 31, 2009 11:04 AM (CfmlF)

201 LMS, you could not pay me to be in Times Square on New Year's. I like watching from the comfort of home. Or I'd be in the hotel watching from my room, lol. Damn, I miss NYC. If I don't pick up any jobs in the next couple months I think I'll fly out there just for the hell of it.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 31, 2009 11:04 AM (gofDd)

204 All right, morons. I'm going to bull my way into Pasadena. I'll see y'all later. And if I don't have a happy and safe new year's! Slainte!

Posted by: wherestherum at December 31, 2009 11:11 AM (gofDd)

205 202 jewells,

I've raised two great sons all by myself I might add, #1 will be 40 and #2 will be 27 different Moms, put them both through college and threatened them with death if they ever got in trouble while growing up (never happened), both are hardcore Conservative and making sinful paychecks every month, proud? You bet! There is a time you just have to trust them, it's hard but you have to for their sake. Not bragging at all just fortunate.

Posted by: 'Nam Grunt at December 31, 2009 11:13 AM (nmfvn)

206 You obviously did a great job with them Nam and you have every right to be proud.  My son is coming around to the conservative view as is my daughter.  But hubby and I are political junkies, they really just don't have a chance lol.

Posted by: jewells at December 31, 2009 11:17 AM (lv7H+)

207 jewells,
Well, you can't look out for the other guy all the time. I'm glad your son made it okay. Mine won't be driving, but I hope he at least remembers the seatbelt.

Gawd, it's like I'm an old fart worry wort here.

Happy New Year

208 Happy New Years!!

Posted by: Raven at December 31, 2009 11:37 AM (O66tS)

209 So, I go into Honey Baked Ham (TM) to buy the obligatory New Year's day spiral cut beauty.  The guy (and I use the term loosely) who was ringing me up was sporting his hipster hair and tats.  Trying to make small talk, I said, "I guess you must get pretty tired of all this ham during the holidays."  And he threw me a look and said, "I don't eat meat.  I'm from Denver.  We eat healthier than you people here.  I've been sick ever since I started working here."

So I left and ran to the Fresh Market, where they always thank me for my business.

Happy New Year morons!  We'll be staying in tonight, resting up for a bunch of people over tomorrow.

211 You go, Jane. Hair and tats don't bother me none, cause I have a little of both. but that kind of rudeness  makes me sick. That's why I always go out of my way and comment on service, both good and bad. I actually get a little thrill out of letting the manager know when that cute little cashier just made my shopping experience better.

Posted by: Tommy Gunnar at December 31, 2009 11:44 AM (rQTdM)

212 Tommy, you got that right.  And have a great New Year (although it's all I can do to even imagine what 2010 holds).

214 Anyway, I know one thing I won't be doing:

The annual New Year's Eve fireworks show over San Diego Bay has been canceled after an environmental group threatened to sue over pollution concerns, it was announced today. . . .

"This, of course, raises doubt about the future of the July 4th fireworks as well," said Sharon Cloward, president of the Port Tenants Association. "Fireworks over San Diego Bay may be a thing of the past."

Yeah, arhooley, gotta protect against global warming.  It's going to get into the 20's overnight beginning this weekend in Savannah.  For at least a week, maybe longer.  I can't remember a winter quite like this (although it's 70 today).

I wish the DVD extras were a little better with the series but that's a minute quibble when you consider how great the series is.
