NBC News: Washington DC Higher-Ups Involved in Targeting Scandal
— Ace

Although Lisa Meyers is reporting this at NBC, here's a link to Breitbart.

We've actually known this -- those of us outside the liberal bubble -- for a week. But now maybe a few people inside it know it now too.

Jay Sekulow is a one-time trial lawyer who represented the IRS in tax-exempt cases. Today, though, he represents 27 conservative groups singled out by the IRS. The lawsuit he intends to file includes letters to his clients that come from "Department of the Treasury / Internal Revenue Service / Washington, D.C."

Sekulow told NBC News:

“We've dealt with 15 agents, including tax law specialists -- that's lawyers -- from four different offices, including (the) Treasury (Department) in Washington, D.C.,” Sekulow said. “So the idea that this is a couple of rogue agents in Cincinnati is not correct.”

Fifth Amendment Enthusiast Lori Lerner's signature is on the cover letters of many of the partisan inquiries-- and those inquiries continued through 2012.

BTW: Schulman called it perfectly normal to visit the White House 118 times in a two year period.

Know how many times the Bush appointee in his position visited the White House from 2003-2007?

Once.

So 118 times does not seem "normal."

Among the reasons Schulman offered for visiting the White House so much -- he said that one time he was there for the Easter egg roll.

28 Foseti's theory (he works in DC) is that bureaucracies resent politicans' interference, and that if Obama had wanted the bureaux to move against the Right they would have been even LESS likely. Might be true of Foseti's office, but the IRS is Obama's vanguard.

I think a better way to think of "118 times in two years" is like this:  that is more than once a week.

Imagine that at work, you had a weekly meeting scheduled for a period of TWO YEARS.  A weekly meeting scheduled at a remote office location.  That location being the corporate HQ.  This would mean that you were working on something significant, obviously.

It doesn't matter if they have signed confessions, nothing is going to happen.

Obama doesn't give a shit.  He's been reelected and the press will not turn on him.  He can order a blanket pardon to everyone involved and issue an executive order to all government employees to not participate in any further investigations - so that they can get back to the "people's business".

61 You know, once upon a time I had the great misfortune of becoming the office expert in Federal Tort Claims Act procedures. Let's just say that sure, sure, sovereign immunity has been waived but there are all kinds of hoops through which you must jump. However, built into the FTCA is a provision that if a determination has not been made on a matter within six months of receipt of all the initial claim form, the claim may be deemed denied and suit filed. Why? To prevent exactly the situation that is going on with the IRS. Oh, we won't deny anyone's application, because that would open up appellate avenues. No, no, no, we'll just sit on the applications and there's nothing that can be done.
And people wonder why I am so cynical about single payer healthcare. Oh, we aren't denying treatment, we are simply reviewing more documentation. That someone dies while that occurs is just an unhappy coincidence.

He's making the recommendations for which witnesses are called when and briefing the Republicans on the committee on what questions to ask. Makes sense. He is slowly and methodically building a very strong case before he gets the really big fish in the crosshairs, just like a good prosecutor would.

75 so, I hope that at this point, the GOP realizes that this fucking guy has used every tool in the federal government to harass republicans and conservatives. It's war. Not only should they be going after the IRS, but also those fuckers from the other agencies that harassed the Tea Party groups. And I mean war. Like Breitbart said. The congressional GOP should not focus on anything. I know, I know, there's the whole issue of merging with Mexico* and other Trojan Horse Liberal issues to surrender on, but before we do that, we should focus on the F word in America. * and again, 2012 was a broken glass election, if you recall. That means, we got EVERYONE to vote. And it wasn't enough because Mexico and Somalia also got to vote in a few key swing states. Otherwise, if we hadn't surrendered on changing America's demographics, TFG would have lost worse than Mondale. But whatevers, I'm sure that the GOP will be able to reach out to all the other new "naturally conservatives" coming in from the 3rd world in the next decade, just as well as they did in the last decade.** ** and note that the donkeys successfully made the voting choice very easy for our new brethren.. cough cough race.

Of course the orders came from higher up.  Some low-level person doesn't dream this up on his own and keep it running for months.  Supervisors would be asking why his files never close and would want to see his work.  And then would come the explosions.

So the higher ups ordered it and being the higher ups they could sign off on all of the irregularities witht ehfiles, just long enough for it to work.

From what I can gather, what they did was pretty illegal. The paper trail   provides the proof.

Also, the net results of their targeting was to throw a national election by drying up the monies Tea Party groups needed to get their message    out. If the lawyers can get enough evidence that Lib/Prog/Com groups were approved in a timely manner and TP groups were deliberately slow-walked, that would make their case for  political discrimination.

It appears  that this was the case. We are  all Chicago now.

98 Would this apply to all the drilling companies in the Gulf who have had their permits "under consideration" for roughly 4 years now? Posted by: Brandon In Baton Rouge at May 29, 2013 01:28 PM (zA7Zp) Nope. Speaking very very very generally, unless there's a deadline provision in the statute, there's nothing to prevent an agency from considering matters or requesting information forever. Hell, even under the FTCA, you have to made sure you used the right form and sent in the right documentation or you'll get thrown out of court and told to go through the administrative process first. There's a reason why I'm all delegation doctrine, motherfucker, do you speak it.

99 "This was a very serious leak, a very grave leak" that "put the American people at risk," Holder said. He called it one of the two or three most serious such episodes he had seen since he became a prosecutor in 1976 but did not say specifically how the disclosure of information about the plot had endangered Americans.

So, naturally, Obama's Holder had nothing to do with the subpoenas and targeting of the press. I mean, who in their own job notes the second most significant event in his career and then opts to stick fingers in his ears and completely ignore the event... besides everyone. Naturally.

Our Federal Gov is a criminal enterprise.

The existence of several rich hucksters like Kevin Trudeu and the guy in Texas with his anti-neoplastics (intentionally misspelled and obfuscated because they love to run Google searches and get sue happy) seem to point in the opposite direction on that one.

Medical treatment is really freaking weird.

Having said that, the FDA is horribly constructed and concentrates power in far to little of a footprint, which leads to the oddities like remarkably slow approval of generics.  Also it's getting easier and easier to manipulate rendering it less and less useful.  (Heck I finished a case study a few years back where they accepted a drug even knowing a chunk of the data was made up whole cloth.)

I think a better way to think of "118 times in two years" is like this: that is more than once a week.

I was told there would never be math on this blog.

Probably just meeting with some low level flunkies that never told the boss he was even there.  Is Obama even at the WH one day a week?  He has such a busy schedule what with all the golfing, photo ops at the Jersey shore and Monroe, OK, parties with Jayzee and Beyonce and those endless speeches and fundraisers.  I think that the frequency of Schulman's visits definitely gives Obama plausible deniabilty.

181 It's probably better for the GOP to just shut up about this and Benghazi and all of the other purported Obama "scandals", lest the party be portrayed as a bunch of partisan Bachmann type crazies. The GOP needs to cut its losses and run.

I disagree.  All the scandles should get as much press and attention as possible.  Every conservative should spend every waking minute telling everyone they know.

However, if anyone thinks someone is actually going to be held responsible and lose something in the process, they will be disappointed.

147OT but wondering if anyone else is an Edward Jones customer and received the very interesting email today re interest rates going up. Basically a "DON'T PANIC" message wrapped around a what goes up must go down (stock market) message all tied up with a "its been a pleasure to serve you" bow. Posted by: farmersusie at May 29, 2013 01:48 PM (ydb8s)

I'm with Edward Jones. I was about to delete the e-mail when I read your post. Opened it up and read it. I'd agree it read like someone trying to soften a blow. I think we're going to see a market "correction" sometime in the not so distant future. I'm still fairly young so (hopefully) in the long run it'll work out. I'd be more worried if I were shortly about to be or were retired.

184   I'm actually sorta of two minds on this. The existence of several rich hucksters like Kevin Trudeu and the guy in Texas with his anti-neoplastics (intentionally misspelled and obfuscated because they love to run Google searches and get sue happy) seem to point in the opposite direction on that one.

The existence of real problems does not make gov't a good solution.

FDA is more of a placebo than a cure.   Is there a chance we could structure a gov't agency that could do the job right?  Perhaps - but the track record is that bureaucracies do not have the incentives to do the job they're supposedly doing.

186 Jay Carney and jumping the shark.

There is this image of Jay Carney on this red bicycle with these little tassels on the handlebars.  He is making an obnoxious laughing sound.  He peddles madly down the ramp and then he is on the up ramp.  Next he is catching air traveling to land on the other ramp.  Below him is a pool with hungry sharks, the water is red with chum, and you can see each shark is tagged ABC, NBC, CNN, CBS, and Fox.  He is still laughing like an obnoxious twit.  The he is abruptly silenced in mid-snort as this giant shark tagged 'The People' leaps into the air and swallows Jay and his bicycle whole.

I've asked for a citation on that, and never received one. I do not doubt that Lerner went to work for the IRS (or some Fed agency) during Bush's tenure...., but did he personally select her for a job? Until there is some evidence, I reject the assertion as empty.

I think Ed's  point  is that the window for the IRS malfeasance having actual effect against the Administration passed in October 2012.

Some of us were pooped on in the morning thread for wondering why this couldn't be a campaign issue for 2012 if congresspeople were issuing a bunch of questions/requests for information about it even a year or so ago.  Hence Ed's post...per Gabe and others, we apparently didn't have evidence before the 2012 election, and now it's apparently futile to pursue this since no one will be held responsible.

So what, exactly, *is* the threshold for action...?

214 Targeting Scandal, the other kind when police use old men for target practice, shoot to kill the guy in his own yard. Woodhaven Country Club, East Ft. Worth, TX [Mr. Waller, a grandfather who armed himself before checking on his neighbor's alarm, was shot and killed in his own driveway by Fort Worth police responding to a burglary alarm. “We heard five shots,” (the witness) Haskin recalled. They were just rapid fire one after the other.” Fort Worth police Cpl. Tracey Knight said, “Officers felt threatened by the man with the handgun and he was shot.” The two officers involved were not hurt and have been placed on administrative leave.] Worth a bet, these policemen did not announce themselves and order the old man to drop his gun and identify himself before they killed him with five shots. Not one, two or three. But FIVE. Is that because they missed their target? The old man would likely have fallen with the first shot, whether he was hit or not. So where did those bullets end up penetrating? Through a window, wall, car, tree or lawn since no other report of injury. Count blessings, only one shot dead accidentally on purpose. If the police didn't identify themselves before shooting him down, did he return fire?
