NATO: Hey, We'll Bomb The Rebels, Too
— Ace

National Review linked this with a "Who's on first?" quip. But I don't know.

Members of the NATO alliance have sternly warned the rebels in Libya not to attack civilians as they push against the regime of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, according to senior military and government officials.

As NATO takes over control of airstrikes in Libya and the Obama administration considers new steps to tip the balance of power there, the coalition has told the rebels that the fog of war will not shield them from possible bombardment by NATO planes and missiles, just as the regime’s forces have been punished.

“We’ve been conveying a message to the rebels that we will be compelled to defend civilians, whether pro-Qaddafi or pro-opposition,” said a senior Obama administration official.

It certainly sounds like a clusterfark, but...

If America wants to enter other states and declare a monopoly on sanctioned violence, well, that's a good way to keep outrages against civilians low, but comes at the cost of using American troops for every damn fight in the world.

If you're going to go a different way -- supporting indigenous fighters with air capabilities and intelligence -- you have to accept that there are going to be some vicious slaughters of civilians by "freedom fighters," but certainly you want as few such massacres as possible.

What do you do? You can threaten an end to air cover and supply. But that doesn't thwart a slaughter in progress.

I'm not sure a threat to attack the rebels we're supporting is necessarily a bad thing. We need them to keep it clean. The temptation in any war, especially a civil one, is to get dirty and vicious as soon as possible and then keep topping yourself. Our troops don't do that (except for the occasional psychopaths who are then court martialed), but we don't want to have to insert our troops into every situation where we might want to flex some military might.

If we're going to fight in this limited fashion (and I think the old Cold War model of limited support is well worth revisiting), we do need to let our "freedom fighters" know that there are some things we just won't/can't countenance, and there's no way we can stay in a fight if our "freedom fighters" decide to unleash their inner Al Qaeda.

As for actually bombing them, though: I really can't think of a more preposterous situation than bombing both sides in a civil war.

Oh, and meanwhile, SecDef Gates said there won't be any ground troops in Libya as long as he's serving in his job. So, like, implicitly, he's threatening to walk.

People point out that we already have had troops on the ground -- one of those shot-down pilots was almost certainly evacuated care of a SEAL team in a helicopter, and I'd imagine they touched boots on the ground during the operation.

I think he means apart from such things.

Although, of course, any time you have pilots in a war it means you're just one shoot-down away from a hostage situation.

Why this sudden change?  Guess what?  The rebels are birthers too!

From AOL News:

What if the biggest mystery surrounding Col. Moammar Gadhafi had nothing to do with his long, brutal reign as the world's most eccentric and violent leader turned pariah?

And what if a long-lost letter from a
Catholic cardinal who knew Gadhafi's true identity was evidence that could have solved the mystery?

To many Libyan people, the biggest question mark about Gadhafi does not involve his repressive and dictatorial rule, delusional statements or brazen lies. Behind closed doors, for years, they've wondered if he is Jewish. Last week the issue came out in the open, as
NBC's Richard Engel reported from Libya that one in five rebels was fighting Gadhafi because he believes the leader is Jewish.

Conflicting reports surrounding Gadhafi's birth have circulated since about 1970, two years after a Gadhafi-led coup made him the de facto leader of Libya.

In a handful of biographies from years ago, mostly written by Europeans, Gadhafi is almost always described as being born in a tent in Sirt, the son of a poor, illiterate Bedouin sheepherder and his wife.

But the hushed-up rumors in Libya about Gadhafi's parentage involved his mother being Jewish. The stories have conflicted over the years, and the narratives are different. One had her converting to Judaism at age 9. In another, Gadhafi's grandmother is Jewish but leaves her husband for an Arab sheik.

A more specific claim, backed up by a Libyan historian, is that Gadhafi was born out of wedlock to a Jewish woman and an Italian soldier in a village east of Tripoli. Because of the shame surrounding the birth, the baby was given to a Catholic cardinal who in turn gave the child to the sheepherder and his wife.

Heh!

It sort of feels as though they don't really care about the libyan people per se..so then what exactly is the point to all this if you assume the rag tag bunch of "rebels" who are really doctors, lawyers, students and professors and oh yeah, with a dash of al k da are going to lose to the k daffy bought mercenary forces no matter what.  So, if k daffy is going to remain in control then logically one has to ask if NATO is doing this to get rid of the remaining libyans, the ones not smart enough or wealthy enough to flee in the early days of this debacle.  The very thought of a cleansing of the stupid who stayed makes me nauseous.

I'm not sure a threat to attack the rebels we're supporting is necessarily a bad thing. We need them to keep it clean.

If the rebels turn out not to be the sterling freedom fighters they are portrayed as -- and does anyone think that they are?--then what exactly rationale do we have for being there at all? Kdaffy was no longer a threat to the west--W used soft power to end his ties to terrorism and WMD research. So attacking him now is actually against US interests if we ever hope to convince bad actors to reform without direct war with us.

I understand differences in magnitude of slaughtering matter, but if the rebels are already getting into the swing of things without power what makes anyone think that they will be so much of an improvement once with it?

If Libyans can agree on nothing but the desire to slaughter each other--fine, what's it to us?

117 First there is this: Clinton To Congress: Obama Would Ignore Your War Resolutions

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA), who asked Clinton about the War Powers Act during a classified briefing, said Clinton and the administration are sidestepping the measure's provisions giving Congress the ability to put a 60-day time limit on any military action.

"They are not committed to following the important part of the War Powers Act," he told TPM in a phone interview. "She said they are certainly willing to send reports [to us] and if they issue a press release, they'll send that to us too."

The White House would forge ahead with military action in Libya even if Congress passed a resolution constraining the mission, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said during a classified briefing to House members Wednesday afternoon.

Then this:

Sullivan Prepared for Impeachment of Dictatorial Obama
That's a gauntlet for anyone left in the Congress not in thrall to the emperor's growing power-grab. I fear, as Yglesias notes, that the Congress doesn't even want to exercize [sic] its powers or even go on the record ... because they're a bunch of pansy-ass losers. But I hope that some of them actually care about the Constitution (hello, Tea Party!) and fight back. If the Obama administration is refusing even to abide by the War Powers Act, then the Congress really needs to vote to defund their adventurism at least or impeach them if it comes to that. Going to war outside even the War Powers Act qualifies as an impeachable offense, it seems to me.

...

We are governed by an executive that goes to war in secret and at will, openly contemptuous of the democratic process and even minimal transparency. and when you realize that that executive actually campaigned against this kind of secretive, dictatorial presidency, you realize how this has become systemic, and the anti-democratic rot is deep.

And we already arm and train the Egyptians, so we can just setup camp across the border. There, no boots on the ground. Just a couple of allies (US and Egypt) doing some training together. And then a hundred yards on the other side of the border are another set of allies (Egypt and the Libyan rebels) doing some training.

Problem solved.

Heh!  From Fahreed Zakharia (or however you spell his name):

The tendency for a president is to be pushed to achieve a decisive victory, no matter the costs, no matter whether the interests at stake are vital or secondary. Presidents want to be leaders of great causes, and the Libyan mission is certainly a good cause. But the more grandiose the rhetoric and the goals, the broader the military mission. And then the United States takes responsibility for the fate of Libya — a country riven with tribes, lacking strong institutions and a civil society, and destroyed by four decades of Gaddafi’s madness. Do we really want to own this, and largely alone? Is it such a bad idea that others should be involved? One liberal commentator noted ruefully that crowds in Benghazi were chanting “Sarkozy!” and not “Obama!” Apparently it is not enough that Libya is rescued; we must be the rescuers because ultimately this is about us, not them.

O/T but a USAID official whining that the evil Republicans budget would cut off aid to children in foreign countries and result in 70,000 children dying..

We estimate, and I believe these are very conservative estimates, that H.R. 1 would lead to 70,000 kids dying,” USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah testified before the House Appropriations State and Foreign Ops subcommittee.

“Of that 70,000, 30,000 would come from malaria control programs that would have to be scaled back specifically. The other 40,000 is broken out as 24,000 would die because of a lack of support for immunizations and other investments and 16,000 would be because of a lack of skilled attendants at birth,” he said…

This coming from a liberal who I'm sure would love to  have less people populating the earth and using all its resources.

So the Dems newest line "It's for the children...in other countries"--wonder how that will play in Peoria?

Qaddafi must go, so we're sending in our military, who won't actively try to remove Qaddfi.  Instead we're relying on local rebels to do so after we enforce a "no fly zone" that includes bombing non-flying tanks and artillery.  The rebels are fighting civilian both Libyan regular forces and civilian militias hired by Qaddafi, but if the rebels kill them they'll be bombed too.

Yeah, the best part of that show was when Kenzie was with the bad guy in that huge, cavernous wharehouse, and he was able to just climb up a conveniently placed ladder to retrieve exactly what he was looking for.

I didn't like that episode much--the part where Heddy watched the bad guy just cold bloodedly murder his cohort, and she refuses to have him picked up for murder because there's a greater national security issue at stake--I didn't find real believable.

At this point, with no consultation or approval by Congress, when does the stink get so bad that military officers question when they are actually getting legal orders?

Their oath is to the Constitution, not the President.  As Commander in Chief, Obama's authority is from the Constitution, and is based on consent of the Congress, even to wage "kinetic action."  Where is Congress?

At some point, I would wager that some very senior officers are going to come to the conclusion that they are not getting legal orders, and will start to say "NO".  They are either faithful to the Constitution or the cult of Barry Obama.

This stinks on ice.

The thinking goes something like this...in their shared hate for us, they'll find "common ground", make their peace and unify to fight us.

1) War
2) ???
3) Peace

At some point, I would wager that some very senior officers are going to come to the conclusion that they are not getting legal orders, and will start to say "NO".

Never happen. In today's military, you don't get to be "very senior" by having your own thoughts and taking some kind of stand.

What you fail to realize is that a LOT of the upper echelon of the Military are the ones who have 'bought into' the political correctness crap over the last 30 or so years.

Anyone with Nads either quit, or was shoved aside as the PC crowd took over.

When Mullens, in front of Congress, says DADT will be implemented and anyone who does not like it can find another line of work??? You begin to get a HINT of what has been going on for the last 30 years.

'IF' Congress would question these orders, some Generals may find their Nads... but short of that they will continue to follow orders, no matter how Unconstitutional.

Note, the Army Col. who tried to open the Obama Birth Cert. question was not even allowed to use that line of defense at his trial.... Fix is in.

The problem though it that every attempt at this case has been decided on terms of 'Standing'... ie you must proove that you will be damaged or you cannot bring suit.

So, he had to wait until he was ordered to do somthing which 'could' damage him... and then he could question the validity of the order...

Problem is, it was a Military Court, not Civilian Court... so while he had 'standing', the court did not allow his arguement even into court... which was interesting based on the outcome of the Nuremburg Trials, the My Lai case, AND the current training which says you should NOT follow illegal orders...

So... the precedent was just set that you should not question the validity of orders, until AFTER you have complied with said order??? or that you can question the order, but then have to do it anyway?

Whole things a mess... but I lay it at OBAMA's feet... he could have easily just released his documents...

But based on the fact that he could not even present his defense, I still contend that the Military Chain of Command is in the tank (or at least the Legal Beagle parts of it).

The only way to win these sorts of battles is to let the bloodthirsty bastards kill each other to their heart's content, or to take a side and demand it be made worth our while.

I stated early on, before we got involved, the only way I was cool w/ getting involved is if we got to write their constitution & enforce it, and we got paid in cold, wet oil for our expenses.

Posted by: iknowtheleft at March 31, 2011 03:15 PM (G/MYk)

291 I'm not sure a threat to attack the rebels we're supporting is necessarily a bad thing.

Oh, for fucks, sakes!

It's a federal CRIME! Lets make noise over this so the MFM demands a justice dept investigation. Except perjury has a statute limit of 5 years. No amount of yelling will get the MFM to care; And Eric Holder runs the justice department.

But you keep running with that ball! We can get him impeached for a crime past statute limits that he didn't commit in office; or use the inaccuracy to actually get standing in court that has been denied already?Right will probably have our grubby little hands on the birth certificate the 4th year of his second term.

Unless you can come up with a sure fire way to gain standing; or come up with conclusive proof he's not a US citizen. (Not "The stuff he used to prove he is a citizen is false" proof, real proof he isn't. Without standing you need decisive proof he isn't) You're pissin' in the breeze.

Let me help you out.
You need one of:
An actual birth certificate or other credible birth affidavit from another country.
A signed oath of renunciation of his US Citizenship.
Or an actual way to gain standing.

Call me when you have any one of those three.

it's business, they all give to both candidates rather than pick one.  But they make sure when they give to make the person think they are the only one he is giving to and then have an underling give to the other campaign, nuances lol.

Look, today someone said that trump is doing this for the president because this is the only issue that really could mar what could be a perfect campaign.  That he wants to get the issue off the table. Ok, that's fine.  If it puts the issue of his birth certificate to rest and allows him to save face then I'm all for trump getting involved in it.

I think though that people aren't looking for a ideologue as president.  They don't want someone making decisions for the country based on polls and whether or not the base and the big donor will revolt, we've been through that will wild bill the aspirin factory bomber.  People are looking for a whole sale change of how government is conducted.   Like do what you promised.  Have real transparency.  Get rid of the influence of k street.  Make sure that anyone can become president not just the wealthy among us.  Little things mean a lot and a lot of folks are remembering how he didn't keep his promises and those promises could have been kept in the first week.  Therefore he is going to win but it's going to be close.  He'll have to convince people to trust him again and that will not be a walk in the park.

Once people decide they like someone, and vote for them, they will continue to vote for them even when they do a poor job as they do not wish to admit they were wrong.

We need to PROOVE that Obama was telling lies to them before the election... so its not their judgement in question, but that they were lied to.

Even though I think it's extremely stupid to be waging war for the rebels which are allied with Al-Qaeda, the Western world has really got to stop being such pansies about killing civilians during wars.

War is not some silly little game with rules and penalties for misbehavior. War is about dominating, crushing, destroying, and enforcing your will on your opponent. Killing civilians isn't just a part of that it's really the main focus of what wars should be.

Yes, I said it. Civilians are a legitimate target in any war and if you can't stomach that idea or think it's too barbaric then your too much of a sissy to be wanting to wage any war.

414 From The Belmont Club:

Update:

The AP reports that Khadaffi’s forces have adopted rebel-like battlewagon vehicles, adapted civilian transport and other strategems essentially aimed at emulating the physical signature of their enemies. This has proved so successful that unnamed sources have suggested that NATO must arm the rebels or come in on the ground to ensure the defeat of Khadaffi.

Reporters described a pell-mell rout of rebel forces traveling east at 100 miles per hour, their vehicles loaded with mattresses and other impedimenta, bringing the contagion of panic with them. Startled civilians watching the headlong flight began to join the exodus. Soon, the road to Benghazi was packed with demoralized rebel families heading east to get away from the Duck’s forces. The rout also adds to the “humanitarian” burden of NATO, which will soon have to feed and care for the battered crowds.

Khadaffi’s tactics echo the “grab the enemy by the belt” methods of the North Vietnamese Army in Vietnam. Their solution to US air dominance was to intermingle, insofar as possible, with US units. Once in close proximity, there was nothing for it but call down stuff in danger close proximity.

Of course it is useful to remember that there are some around who are actually combat effective. Unfortunately they may belong to an organization which starts with “a” has a hyphen and then ends with another “a”. Of all the ironies of war, none may be as great as a ground force of the a*-****a acting as spotters for AC-130s and A-10s for the destruction of forces which until recently was the recipient of military aid.

425 Ah. From the linked AP article mentioned in Belmont Club Rebels had advanced overnight to the west gate of Brega, a town important to Libya's oil industry that has gone back and forth between rebel and loyalist hands. They were in Brega at dawn, but they soon pulled out under heavy shelling from Gadhafi's forces. Black smoke billowed in the air over Brega as mortars exploded. "There were loads of (rebel) wounded at the front lines this morning," said rebel fighter Fathi Muktar, 41. Rebels fired back from sand dunes, chanting "Allahu akbar!" or "God is great!" with each rocket fired. Spotters with binoculars watched where they landed and ordered adjustments. Brega was deserted and Jabbar Ali, 25, a rebel aviation technician, said Gadhafi's forces were at its eastern gates and controlled much of the city. Many people also have fled Ajdabiya, a rebel-held city about 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the east, for fear that government forces were on their way. The fighting has highlighted the rebels' weaknesses: Some ran screaming to cars after being frightened by the outgoing fire from their own side. Typical war run by Democrats. Like admiring Satan in "Paradise Lost," you almost end up rooting for the bad guys. Trouble is, here both sides sound like the bad guys.

432 In our silence, Muslim Americans essentially collaborate with the Islamists

I am a woman who practices medicine and Islam. Islam took me to Mecca and Hajj. Medicine took me to Riyadh and London. Each capital hosts communities espousing Islamist neo-orthodoxy. Both spawn violent jihadist ideologies. Listening to counter-terrorism experts and examining the ugly underbelly of contemporary radical Islamism has taught me what Muslims in Mecca, Riyadh, or London could not: the difference between Islam and Islamism.

Rep. Peter King (R) of New York’s Senate hearings seek answers to these and other questions, while attacks of “Islamophobia” and “McCarthyism” threaten to suffocate this vital discourse. As a Muslim, watching Islamists at work lends me rare perspective. Mr. King’s hearings offer the public this same perspective, just when it is needed most.

Suicide bombers should be called homicide bombers Islamist terrorism places martyrdom at its center, distorting Islam into a false faith valuing death above life. Islam reviles suicide, yet suicide operations are now synonymous with Islamist terror. This is deliberate.

Read it all....

437 355, ya know I have heard that. Businessmen donate to everyone etc. Well I call BS on that. If you believe in life, and are pro life, as Trump CLAIMS HE IS, and has said recently he "always has been," and then donates to radical pro abortion, including partial birth abortion politicians who use taxpayer money to fund planned parenthood among other schemes, then he is just lying his ass off. You can't be one thing, and then do another. Look up his statements on healthcare in the past. He said we MUST have universal healthcare! He says the government is too big now, yet he has supported big government politicians forever! He is very skilled and shifts with the times. When Bush was riding high in the polls, you can find Trump praising him. When Bush went down in the polls, he roasted Bush on EVERYTHING. In 2008, he publicly praised Obama and Hillary Clinton at the hight of the democrat wave, now when Obama is in some trouble, he is all over Obama. This is not the type of guy I want as President. He seems to put money above even basic principles. So what if the far left is destroying America, he will still donate to them and help them get elected so he has influence with them to protect his billions in business ventures. Wow, thanks Donald! Not impressed.

445 actually, they can say "we went in and tried to help" and "we went to the UN and did all the diplomatic stuff first (contrary to some of our predecessors) and then handed it off.  We didn't go to congress cause we weren't required to go and now, now that we are here they are pulling us out.  So, we tried and k daffy is in for the long haul and remains in control but we did what we could.  And the American people won't care if k daffy is still there.  They just don't want to be fighting on another front, they want out of there.

Now, the revels are said to have the oil so, if they turn out not to be garden variety libyans and instead, al k da and they end up with the oil well then during the campaign the question will be asked "so you essentially handed lybia to al k da.  So why have we been fighting in Afghanistan for all these years if you were going to hand over the oil and the oil money to al k da?  If trump is in the race, this will be asked.  So they are so between a rock and a hard place here.  the best outcome would be that k daffy agrees to go off to Brasil and retire.  The revels turn out to be freedom loving libyans who want a democratic republic, not just a democracy and everyone lives happily ever after and BO gets the credit.  Then hopefully the Egyptians would see a democratic republic in action and push back on the bros.  But if is a very big word.

OMG so I'm talking to my friend in LA online and she says "well I have my bag of popcorn so I'll know if the radiation is dangerous".   So, I said "what does radiation have to do with popcorn" and she types "well, I met this guy saturday night and he told me that he was a nuclear physicist and that the best way to tell if there was too much radiation in my apartment is to leave a bag of popcorn on the kitchen counter and if it started to pop I would know I have a problem".

Thank God it was not video chat.  So I told her she might want to double check that and gave her the link to here and told her to read all the posts on here about that.

459 461 posts here, and I'm sure somebody up-thread said it better, but what I've been trying to tell everyone who will listen, NATO is not a real military force! It's a phantom, it's an idea. There is nothing like our current concept of what a modern military should be, except for what we, the United States, brings to a NATO operation. So what I read here is the NATO power structure essentially saying we can't guarantee we won't bomb rebels as well as K'daffy's forces. They can't because that would require the kind of precision bombing we Americans have come to expect. Honestly, nobody except us can do it. Not our friends, not our enemies. I'm not sure why we pretend they can, but they can't. We'll see.
