NASCAR: Race Day In Martinsville 3-30-14- [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

Welcome to another week of NASCAR racing. This week the action is at the short track at Martinsville in Ridgeville, VA, for the STP 500.

This week NASCAR suffered the loss of a beloved family member as Linda Petty, wife of Richard Petty, succumbed to cancer. ESPN writer Ryan McGee recalls a morning spent with her in 2008.

I was standing just outside the front door to the office, staring out at the front yard of the Petty homestead, and no doubt grinning ear-to-ear. The team had recently moved south to the Charlotte area and the near-empty buildings where the most dominant race cars in NASCAR history were once built was now downright tranquil. But it still gave me chills.

I was so giddy to have the place to myself that I hadn't even noticed the car that pulled up and the woman that started walking toward me.

"Good morning," she called out. "Are you lost or waiting on someone?"

It was Lynda Petty. Wife of Richard, mother of Kyle, matriarch of Petty Enterprises, and to so many, certainly to me, the first lady of stock car racing.

I introduced myself and she was kind enough to act like she remembered me. I told her that I was waiting for her grandson, Austin, to pick me up and take me over to the nearby Victory Junction Gang Camp for a tour. To that she replied, laughing, "If you're riding with Austin, be sure to wear your seat belt." Then she said, "Why don't I wait with you and you tell me about yourself."

Funny, I'd wanted to say the same thing to her.

It's been a tough week for the NASCAR family as another legendary clan lost a loved one. Bobby Waltrip, brother to Darrell and Michael, a Fox Sports announcer and successful go-kart racer, passed away last Sunday.

May God grant the families of Linda and Bobby with peace and the loving support of those who surround them.

Now, on to race day...

The snapshot can be found here. (Warning: There's an auto-play video)

Pole position for today's race belongs to Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin who qualified at 99.674 mph and 99.548 mph respectively.

And, of course, elbows: former Sprint Cup Girl, Paige Duke.

Have a great day and enjoy the race.

1 Mmmm.  Elbows.

As I said down below, the race started, I glanced away for half a second because, you know, first lap and there was a crash.  What the hell?

2 President Obama should end racing because it adds to global warming and wastes resources for no reason at all.

43 Mike look what that RINO Tillis did now, get the NY Slime all upset. Quote from front page story. Democrats in North Carolina are scrambling to fight back against the nation’s most restrictive voting laws, passed by Republicans there last year. The measures, taken together, sharply reduce the number of early voting days and establish rules that make it more difficult for people to register to vote, cast provisional ballots or, in a few cases, vote absentee.

58 The "Nascar Green" logo is really stupid. Don't really get who they think they are fooling. It annoys most fans and it's not like it's gonna convince the eco-nazis to support Nascar. Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at March 30, 2014 09:54 AM (DmNpO)

70 @68 - Ethanol is great for engines that are set up for it, if BSFC as measured by fuel volume is not a factor. It's a great antidetonant and you can run a bunch of boost in turbo motors. But...it's also corrosive to a lot of common materials used in engines and fuel plumbing, it's got a much lower BTU content than gasoline so you have to burn more of it, and I'm still confused as to why anyone thinks any of this represents a good thing environmentally.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at March 30, 2014 11:04 AM (DmNpO)

78 NDH, below is a oink to a youtube video that picks apart common core, to follow on from talking about it last night. As one almost always needs to do, follow the money. http://tinyurl.com/m7e3q7d It's kinda long but worth it.

Posted by: ManWithNoParty at March 30, 2014 11:14 AM (ojnk6)

79 In addition to an oink, there's a link too. ;-D

Posted by: ManWithNoParty at March 30, 2014 11:16 AM (ojnk6)

80 NDH, I think this is close:

44 minus your finishing position (so 43 for first place, 42 for second, etc)
plus 1 for leading a lap at some point
plus 1 for leading the most laps
plus 3 for winning.

Those last three points in previous years weren't awarded until the chase began and if they changed that it wasn't announced anywhere I can find. I think that worked after Daytona, but the thread was long dead when I had a chance to look at it. It seemed to be true for the back half of the field (after 20th), and I didn't have a list of who led laps, but earlier finishers seemed consistent with that.

Another answer you might get is 'Points don't really matter'. If there are 15 or fewer winners over the first 26 races, anyone with a win is in the chase, with as many other folks as needed to get to 16 determined by points (that's going to be a few but not a lot). After that, eliminations every three races will be based on points with immunity for winners over that period. And in the last race, the remaining four drivers throw out the points entirely, and it's whoever hits the finish line first.

Where points matters is who gets qualified automatically each week, but that probably won't apply to anyone the average fan cares about, and only if more than 43 cars show up.
