Nancy Pelosi Stopped One Useful CIA Operation in 2004. So, Um, If Waterboarding Was So Bad, How Come She Couldn't Stop That?
— Ace

She "came unglued." Unstitched might be a better metaphor.

In mid-2004, then-House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi learned something from a CIA briefing that made her blood boil. Pelosi reportedly "came unglued" at the revelation and had "strong words" with national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, demanding that the CIA abandon its plans. As a result, a top-secret finding that President George W. Bush signed to authorize the CIA's activities was revised. Pelosi succeeded in stopping the agency from moving forward with the controversial operation.

What drove Pelosi to action? Not the CIA's waterboarding of suspected al-Qaeda terrorists. In a 2009 interview, a former senior Bush administration official directed me to a little-noticed item from Time magazine. According to this 2004 report, Pelosi objected to a CIA plan to provide money to moderate political parties in Iraq ahead of scheduled elections, in an effort to counter Iran, which was funneling millions to extremist elements. "House minority leader Nancy Pelosi 'came unglued' when she learned about what a source described as a plan for 'the CIA to put an operation in place to affect the outcome of the elections,' " Time reported. "Pelosi had strong words with National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice in a phone call about the issue. . . . A senior U.S. official hinted that, under pressure from the Hill, the Administration scaled back its original plans." (Her role was also reported on this page by David Ignatius in 2007.)

Why is this important? Because on May 14, 2009, Pelosi, now speaker of the House, declared in a Capitol Hill news conference that she had opposed CIA waterboarding but was powerless to stop it. A former senior intelligence official told me in 2009 that he was shocked by Pelosi's claim because, he said, "Speaker Pelosi herself has stopped covert action programs that she has been briefed on by going to the White House. In that very same time frame [after she learned about waterboarding] Pelosi had gone back to the White House [over] a separate covert action program, expressed strong opposition to it. And the remarkable part to me, the White House backed off the program, changed one aspect of the program . . . she was particularly opposed to. And literally, the finding was pulled back and revised." If Pelosi had truly opposed waterboarding, he said, she had numerous ways to stop it -- but she didn't try.

That move -- stopping the funding of moderate parties -- seemed to have no other point than to try to sabotage the entire war effort, by the way.

No, Madame Speaker, I'm afraid I'm not terribly shaken up by the idea that the CIA attempts to influence elections with money. How old are you, for crying out loud? Your face says 90, but you seem stuck in 2nd grade.

Thanks to Mark Thiessen, who wrote this book right here.

But Democrats were not always this detached from reality.  It became so, when the idea's Democrats once fostered were proven not to work.  It became a freak show, when libs realized they could only have an office or power, if they pandered to the least common denominator.  It grew into the Star Wars bar scene.  The MSM has tried to paint the GOP or Conservatives as extreme.

Greyson?  Pelosi?  Obama?  Sebellius?  Napolitano?  Jennings? Van Jones?  Steven Chu? Al Gore?   On and on and on.  Democrats INVITED and WELCOMED NUTS.

So we are left with a MSM that is by it's very nature liberal.  Then add the MADDOWS, MATTHEWS, OLBERMANS and BEHARS.

THEY ARE FREAKS!!! And now mainstream Democrats.

99 When Obama is elected, it will validate in pure numbers the fact the number of people taking from the government has become greater than the number giving to the government. The game is approaching an end phase. I think most people sense this like a dog senses an earthquake. Except in slow motion. And yeah our enemies are all set to apply the coup de grace when we are at our weakest. I'd say that will be sometime into the second or third week of rioting. And we are most definitely in a political box, unable to free ourselves. Meanwhile the little Emirates keep buying super jumbo jetliners and training pilots. Just doing their part for their team getting ready for game day.

If you missed Beck this afternoon, he had three historians on who told the sick, sordid truth about "modern Progressives."  You'll feel like you're living in the Twilight Zone compared to what the Founders envisioned.  Try and DVR it this weekend.

It was fascinating to say the least -- esp. the part about the Harvard Law prof in the '20s who decreed we needed to make decisions not on Constitutional Law but case law (thereby basing our decisions forever on decisions liberal judges made earlier!).

Posted by: gus at January 29, 2010 09:12 PM (MaqIC)

I think the issue is the collapse of the Soviet Union. Prior to 91, the left defined itself as somewhere between capitalism and international socialism.

Well international socialism spectacularly lost to capitalism, so it becomes hard to sell yourself as in between success and failure...

So they looked for a new model - and they found it by dropping most of the internationalist trappings. National socialism has historically done much better economically then international socialism because it is less dogmatic. Controlling industry is fine - it really doesn't matter much who owns it.

So now they have a new model. One that people should be rejecting out of hand...but the Left has deluded people into thinking fascism is some lassiez faire 'christianist' government type...not exactly what they are peddling.

We've had the discussion around  here about the High Speed Boondoogle. I'm in the transportation engineering field and know a little about it. Where in the hell are they going to get the expertise to design, inspect and build this crap? We voted that down in Florida, as I'm sure you recall. That stimulus money will go down a rathole, never to be seen in Florida. It'll go to Japan or Germany or even (cringe) France.

Don't get me wrong. If we could make it work I'd be all for it. I've been enjoying the benefits of funemployment for a year (almost to the day) and would love to work on the project. But, all the funds will be exhausted before it can ever be built.

160 The high speed rail between LA and SF is supposed to use existing freight rails.

*cough* bullshit *cough* they lie *cough*

Freight roadbed is simply not designed to handle high speed.  They might be able to use the same right of way and add a few sidings here or there, but they're going to have to redesign the ballast, rail attachments, ties, etc or it will be a constant source of maintenance problems.

A heavily loaded slow train needs a different trackage design than a light weight high speed one.   A fair amount of flexibility is designed into slow/heavy trackage.  That same level of flexibility in a high speed application could easily result in derailments.

I rather doubt you could sustain much more than 80mph on typical freight track before the passenger train has stability issues due to the track.

' " Time reported. "Pelosi had strong words with National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice in a phone call about the issue. . . . A senior U.S. official hinted that, under pressure from the Hill, the Administration scaled back its original plans." (Her role was also reported on this page by David Ignatius in 2007.)

ok, i see her part , but why did others cave to her treachery

191 Evening all.  I'm not surprised that Pelosi would this as all of her actions show what she is (limo liberal) and what she is capable of (just about anything).  What does surprise me is that the Washington Post would print it.

Posted by: scr_north at January 29, 2010 06:18 PM (Kn4gu)

192 I'm really suprised they printed it too, but hey, anything that could possibly take the vile bitch down is ok with me.  I think I might detest her more than el precedente.  I'd love to see her tried for treason...and have it stick.

Well, this is really rich because it's exactly sorta kinda pretty much what the fuck Obama planned with the Taliban in Afghanistan instead of killing them!

Was Nancy pissed then??

I hate this bitch. I hate these damn people.

194 So, it's OK for us to shoot terrorists in Iraq, but if they run for office and control of the Iraqi military, Pelosi won't let us support the good candidates?

And we know the sick fucking game she was playing.  If Bush fought her on this, it would be public that the US wanted certain candidates to win.  And that would destroy our efforts and get terrorists in charge.

It's yet another example of the worst level of blackmail, and it absolutely got US  Soldiers killed.

Thanks Pelosi.  Us not funding the good guys made their elections that much messier and the resulting Iraq that much more theocratic.

This kind of game was played in a millions ways.  Bush either caved on something or our war effort was screwed with.  Once the democrat leadership learned how to play this... well all of a sudden their spending went insane and... oh, they could even blame Bush for it.

This is so sad.  The dems and GOP used to have their arguments without treason entering the mix.

195 Willow, why did we cave?

Because as soon as they fight Pelosi on this, it leaks.

And that gets our boys killed.  And leads to hysteria in a paranoid culture.  That's what Pelosi leveraged.

She's beyond words, really.  I think this should be discussed in a hearing of some kind.  But she's the result of democracy, whether I like it or not.

196 189 Isn't the high speed rail supposed to be between Miami and Tampa and Orlando?  Heard some explanation that this was the only place with enough free and open land to do this but then also heard the floridians think it is stupid.  So, that's great.  The very people being bestowed with "the gift" don't want it, so then why spend all that money for something the recipients don't want.

On another thread someone said no US makers can supply high speed rail equipment, so if true we are going to borrow money from China to buy equipment from Japan to build a rail line no one wants. This stimulates what? Some day when we can afford it a well planned high speed rail system covering the US could be a good thing, but at this point we don't have the money, it will provide very few jobs in the long term after construction is finished and this is another bridge to nowhere.

No, Madame Speaker, I'm afraid I'm not terribly shaken up by the idea that the CIA attempts to influence elections with money. How old are you, for crying out loud? Your face says 90, but you seem stuck in 2nd grade.

When the hell did she get the vapors over the CIA trying to influence an election?  She certainly applauded leaks from the CIA which tried to discredit George Bush.  Old Prune Face was right on board with each and every one of those leaks.  What a flaming douchebag dummy!

Arrogant, possessing an attitude of total entitlement, spoiled, protected by the media because of her status as a far left Democrat, insulated so well in her elected position that she has no need to compromise or even to tolerate anyone who disagrees with her. Politically correct in all regards, a leftist's liberal who is a true winter soldier for the cause. Not overly intelligent, but cunning enough, like a rat who has figured out a maze, to thrive in her world.

George Bush welcomed her graciously when she became the Speaker. Peggy Noonan wrote an editorial congratulating her and wishing her and her fellow Dems well as they took power in 2006. Pelosi's response was to call George Bush incompetent and gloat that she could say those things becase she was a woman, and that she intended to keep on bashing. Truly a nasty piece of work.

A heartfelt thanks to you moderates and "undecided voters" who have foisted her and her likes on us. Elections have consequences.

204 I find it fascinating that a woman who has a person insert a substantial needle into her face filled with poison, considers anything else torture.  And that that same woman does this voluntarily.....doesn't just that make you question her mind?
