More Madness: Pomona College Protests the Hiring of a White Professor; Students Charge That Laura Kipness Committed a Crime By Writing Book Critical of Title IX
— Ace

So we're now in a No Whites Need Apply system. Wonderful.

To hire a white professor is an "egregious offense."

Is there any other kind, lately?

Students at Pomona College don't want sociology professor Alice Goffman to work on their campus because of her race, Campus Reform reports. Goffman is white.

The students at the Claremont, California academic institution wrote a letter to the school's administrators demanding that an offer of employment extended to Goffman be rescinded on the basis of the professor's race...

The open letter was produced by 128 "sociology students, alumni, and allies" who wished to express their "anger" and "concern" regarding Goffman's hire -- but not their names.

Meanwhile, Laura Kipnis, that feminist professor put through the Title IX Secret Evidence Court for daring to chide students for being special snowflakes about sex, is now being accused of having committed a crime for having discussed a colleague - using a pseudonym to protect this special snowflake's identity -- because it's mean or something.

By the way, the colleague in question filed charges against Kipnis. That kind of gives Kipnis the right to respond in a book, right? Lord knows she wasn't permitted to do so in a Title IX kangaroo court.

4 Wow! Geez, now I feel obligated to post something.

I was in college within living memory, and it wasn't this crazy. Except the sociology department. Reading this kind of stories always makes me think that the sociology departments are taking over.

5 More Madness" Nah. It's pretty much the same ol' madness. BTW, after perusing the previous posts, I'd point out that a big part of the madness is the overly idiotic "politeness" of the American "right wing" over the past 25 or so years (ok, since the opening days of Booosh 1). "Don't hit back" or "ignore it" are really, really stupid tactics in politics... and war.

53 128 anonymous people penned/signed a letter oppose the hiring of candidate A. And is the administration just supposed to take it on faith that this is not really only 10-12 friends of candidate B or C who didn't get the job offer? Ridiculous. I believe Kipnis has committed the ultimate leftist mob group sin. She did not set aside her beliefs and the facts and throw her friend to the wolves when the mob decided he was a target. 80 As we know, everyone MUST go to a college. On a liberal site with a large number of commenters who worked at colleges, someone once remarked that the dumbest students are routed into education, sociology, and MBA programs. Everyone agreed. No one differed or even yelled "[noun]ist!" so I think there's a good possibility it's true. And when you consider that our society is run by "educators," sociologists, and MBAs, this observation may explain why it collapsed, although it is also possible it was just time. All empires have had finite lifespans. For what it's worth, I think that our society could still save itsrlf if we just got out of the empire business and concentrated on tending to our own business. At Berkeley, back in the day, some STEM prof was bitching about unit inflation for weak sauce sociology courses. (My favorite: 5 units for a course on American pop culture, which course consisted of watching movies. I'm not making this up.) Meanwhile, chemistry students typically got 3 units for a lecture course in the morning with labs in the afternoon. The sociology clowns spluttered that their courses were so demanding, etc. Then the unsung genius combed Berkeley's records. It turned out that HALF of the sociology students were taking (IIRC) 28 units, and that no one in the 100-year history of the College of Chemistry had ever done that. Who knew sociology students were such intellectual titans?

130 Well, we don't have an empire, but no, I see not even the tiniest connection between this kind of internal idiocy and rot and foreign policy. When the US was much, much, much more involved in the world - much larger % of GDP in military spending, even conscription, active (and sometimes large) bases and treaty commitments from Greenland to Pakistan to Turkey to Norway to wherever, nukyler-armed bombers on runway alert, large direct foreign aid programs including capital projects (guess who built the runways and highways in Afghanistan?), and so on - we had ..... Leave it to Beaver pop culture, orderly campuses with large ROTC programs, etc. So, perhaps the wise thing to do is to adopt the posture and involvement of Belgium or New Zealand (seriously), but it won't have jack of an effect on the internal idiocy and rot. But just for once it would be nice to see someone favoring a non-global America (logically) upset with "rebuilding the military". We don't need 50% of the military we have to do the Small America thing. Six carrier groups, even fewer Air Force wings (well the F-35 debacle may achieve some of these cuts on its own, ha), an even smaller Army, and nothing more than a few small afloat units of Marines (for extracting embassy staffs, etc.).

Given that the first unit of the new _Ford_ class carrier was *meant* to cost nearly twice what the predecessor class had cost to build, and then had a nearly 50% cost overrun on top of that colossal figure, six carrier groups may be unaffordable.

The way you can tell you're living during the Trump administration, and not during the Torquewrench administration, is that if I ran the zoo, and a warship named after Gerald Ford had that sort of increase in its price tag, I would be ordering the Secretary of the Navy to permanently affix an enormous "WIN button" to the side of the ship's island.

163 Depending on how each team performs, the Chargers could be the fourth team in LA - in terms of fan interest. Or fifth. USC Raiders Rams UCLA Chargers This really is the pecking order, based on fan interest and history. Actually of course the Chargers have near zero historical following in LA since Eisenhower was president. But people outside the area (understandably) don't usually understand that when USC is a Top 5 program, THEY are LA's football team. Think that was true even back in the days of the original Rams. And the Raiders have scrambled things even further. Just a semi-educated guess but Spanos probably moved mostly to raise franchise value with an eye to selling in a few years. 178 "even fewer Air Force wings (well the F-35 debacle may achieve some of these cuts on its own, ha)"

Trump is being endlessly self-congratulatory about his getting the price tag down a few percent on the F-35 Faceplant.

The thing is, to invoke an automotive analogy, even if someone cleverly negotiates with the sales manager at the car dealership to buy a complete lemon for under dealer invoice, they still end up owning an lemon.

"nothing more than a few small afloat units of Marines (for extracting embassy staffs, etc.)"

During the Late And Continuing Unpleasantness in southwest Asia, it became trendy again for USMC officers to refer to their service as being "America's specialists in fighting small wars".

Okay. What happens to said service when and if America decides it's going out of the business of fighting small wars?

180 169 It will take years to get use to the LA Chargers. They started in LA. Spent their first year there in the AFL (1960). Posted by: tu3031 at April 28, 2017 07:47 PM (qJhUV) --I hope when the Chiefs play the Cowboys in Dallas this year that they wear the throwback Dallas Texans uniforms.

181 I know the Chargers started in LA, but as I said they have literally no base there, apart from the small base that almost all NFL teams have outside their areas (and then there are "national" teams that have a following all over - Raiders, Cowboys, Packers, et al). If they miraculously become dominant in the AFC West or AFC in the next two years, they'd certainly get some traction. But barring miracles, as I noted, and assuming USC stays strong, the Chargers are 4th, or 5th, among LA football programs. When the Raiders are actually playing in Vegas they will probably even increase their following in the LA area - I'm sure a notable part of their season-ticket base will be driving up the 15.

214 Tinfoilbaby, I am the farthest thing from an expert on NFL matters, but the Chargers debacle did put me some knowledge (I think) about the very weird economics of things now. To over-simplify, it's now all about institutional season-ticket sales (they have odd new names for these arrangements, but that's what they are). You sell as many of these for as much $ as you can, and you've realized 70-80% of the franchise-only (not revenue-shared with other NFL teams) revenue you're going to see. Can be even higher. I think I read that the 49ers would lose only 15-20% of franchise-only revenue if their new stadium was empty for every game. In any case, almost certainly because of massive bad faith by Spanos (really a horrible owner, lousy at football, lousy at business, and even worse with fans), San Diego dodged a Mk12A nukyler warhead on a new mega-stadium. Not that it matters. CA brain-death among "citizens" is now out of control in San Diego as it has been in LA and the Bay area for decades. The mayor, a "Republican", is a pretty funny example of the emptiness and irresponsibility of today's political class. He - insanely - thinks he can go higher somewhere in CA, which is of course ridiculous (wrong party, wrong color, wrong gender). Thus he - in a comically inept fashion - attempts to appear as racist and stupid as a typical CA Dem, while trying to avoid adopting the disastrous and idiotic policies of a CA Dem. His magisterial political take on the current president, back during the campaign, when asked about his party's nominee: "that's not who we are".

San Diego HAS a border wall (from the beach to out near Dulzura). Talk to the BP. They'll tell you most of the action starts .... yep, where the barrier ends. And ask the BP in the El Centro sector how life is out there, with no barrier. THIS is how stupid American politics, CA voters and politicians, the press, and the culture have become. Probably mentioned this before, but in southern Brazil, in the 80s, you could hear German and Italian being spoken, and NOT by old people. In smaller towns, or neighborhoods of larger towns like Curitiba and Porto Alegre. Portuguese was only made the national language of instruction in 1942 (?), when Brazil joined the Allies (translation: strong-man Vargas was bribed to join - base rights and a few divisions of infantry in return for steel mills and $$$$), and it was a bit awkward having all 3 major Axis languages (German, Italian, Japanese) being taught in many Brazilian schools .....

Posted by: runner at April 28, 2017 08:29 PM (c6/9Q) No ... and let's not forget "me" and "you" ... because my premise is simple, focused, and direct. I think an Undergraduate Degree in Business is pure folly. Because the notion that one could simply make money in "business" ... without understanding the details of that business ... is ludicrous. It's fool's gold. It's putting the cart before the horse. And it's the exact kind of magic beans bullshit Americans fall for. The only thing more foolish would be a Masters Degree in Business. That would assume - first - that said degree could provide specialized, focused education in a particular business segment matched to enough students able to attend to form a sustainable model. But I have no doubt regarding the value of the credential - to the credentialed. And ... no to another premise you stated. Advanced degrees, or undergrad degrees for that matter, do not necessarily confer greater problem solving skills. They simply do not. I should know. I have a B.S. degree. Did not make me one whit smarter when I left than when I started.

328 Cut the funding with a diamond tipped chainsaw and let the snowflakes pay for ALL of their post adolescent daycare Make the colleges and universities responsible for repayment of student loans. Quite a few administrators discover that boney thing between their head and their ass when money is on the line.

329 In quantifiable terms - how were you educated to administer business
better than the equally intelligent and previously equally educated
employee who spent said two years working in said business rather than
attending said MBA program ?

As far as I can see, all an MBA education gets you that job experience doesn't is a piece of paper that says you have an MBA.

333 Why do they have OCS? Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at April 28, 2017 08:47 PM (IDPbH) Because of the same folly. The notion that a "school" can somehow teach leadership. Or critical thinking. Or business acumen. Or even identify it ... let alone improve such talent. But a School can confer a Credential. And then rest assured that those who've been Credentialed will defend the Credential. And that's all you or runner have done ... defend the Credential. Neither of you offered one instance where the actual credentialing process improved the output of the credentialed. And it should be so easy ... if the Credential was so worthwhile.

I actually know plenty about it, thanks.

That degree, as well as most degrees that are not hard sciences, are a signalling mechanism rather than an experience that prepares you for the tasks of any actual job. Speaking as someone with a MA in Economics, I will say the same thing about most of my education: I learned nothing that I didn't already intuitively know before I ever set foot in a classroom. The only exception to that rule was the higher level math that I absolutely needed to be able to forecast (and understand what I was forecasting).

My son has commented on the same phenomenon in the kitchen where he is training as a chef. He has noted a couple of times that the guys who get jobs there  out of culinary school are unprepared for the job of line cooking and are also horrible at time management. Worse, the do not take direction well because "they went to culinary school".

336 Mayor Landrieu removed a monument recently. It was a Jim Crow monument more than a Confederate monument, but Robt. E. Lee's statue removal is next. That has more than the whiff of the Soviet Airbrush about it, despite Lee's rebellion. There's also kind of a historical arrogance about it. For instance, Washington grew up when slavery was as natural as breathing. Yet by the end of his life, he had trained his slaves in various trades so they could support themselves when he freed them. The question isn't "Did Washington live up to our standards?" The question is, if we were born in his time, could we live up to his? Anyway, if Confederates hated blacks and Yankees, the Left today still hates white people and Southerners. But they also hate Americans, Christians, men, straight people, gun-owners, businessmen, the rich, traditionalists, cops, soldiers, etc. Lefties are more bigoted than Confederates ever were.

But you would if you could. Just to win the argument. But I gotta' admit - I picked this MBA fight on purpose. Do you not see the irony - in yet another thread bitching about the corruption of Higher Education - of Rock Ribbed Republicans defending THEIR Higher Education ? Nah ... of course you don't.

338 Hi, weasel, I carry a styling brush in my purse. On what must have been an unusually active day, it wiggled its way out of its little case and when I reached in, one of the plastic bristles jammed way up under my fingernail. Ow. Ow. Ow. It was sore for several weeks and the mark was still visible 6 months later. I switched to a natural bristle brush to carry around with me, the bristle is more likely to bend than to ram up under a fingernail.

339 Scogg - The complaint is that colleges have been corrupted, not that higher education is pointless. There's no hypocrisy. And this shit has been ratcheted up even since *I* graduated, and I'm pretty young. Most people on this site didn't experience the full brunt of this rot.

340 Well it's supposedly sent by 128 snowflakes--but they won't sign their names to the lettter. Well 128 snowflakes is the start of a snowball. But since I don't know the snowflakes names, how am I to know whether the letter was actually the product of 128 moose turds? Considering the content of the letter, I'm going with the moose turd angle.

Great Wall of China, gunpowder, paper . . . pretty much a clean sweep by the Chinese I'd say. Posted by: logprof at April 28, 2017 08:27 PM (GsAUU) But Whitey took it to a whole new level though.... matchlocks, flintlocks percussion cap, breechloaders, lever guns, bolt action, semi auto, full auto,.50 caliber browning ma duece, electric gatling guns spewing death out the front end of an a10 warthog. Side note, The fact is a whole lot of people have decided to identify "tribally" instead of as americans and have commenced tribal warfare against white people who didnt know they were just chosen as the scapegoat in a giant game of get the designated devil. News flash if white people wake up one day and decide thier survival is really at stake and thier white bread is buttered on the side of joining the "tribal warfare"game there are other tribes who wont know what hit them.
