The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.”; Marcus Tullius Cicero

Quote II

Every family should have the right to spend their money, after tax, as they wish, and not as the government dictates. Let us extend choice, extend the will to choose and the chance to choose. Margaret Thatcher

Quote III

Whoever controls the media, the images, controls the culture. Allen Ginsberg

Quote IV

A narrative is emerging. It is that the new meritocratic aristocracy has come to look like every other aristocracy. The members of the educated class use their intellectual, financial and social advantages to pass down privilege to their children, creating a hereditary elite that is ever more insulated from the rest of society. We need to build a meritocracy that is true to its values, truly open to all. David Brooks

Today in History, June 4, 1940-Winston Churchill's "We shall fight on the beaches speech."

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

Politics over competence. How the Obama administration screwed up at the FAA.

He is back in the news. Bernie Sanders is back rabble rousing on "fair wages".

City officials with the California town of Anaheim blasted failed Democrat presidential candidate and socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders this Saturday after he rallied with Disneyland workers to demand higher wages for them.

“While touting himself as a friend of the working man, Bernie has come all this way to support a measure that will result in thousands of lost jobs for the people of Anaheim,” Todd Ament, the CEO of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce, reportedly said in a written statement.

*****

Arson is frowned upon. Except in Warburton, Trafford and Rixton, Warrington,

A mystery arsonist has been praised a ‘hero’ after an ‘ancient’ tollbooth which only charged drivers 12p burnt down overnight.

Townsfolk in Warburton, Trafford and Rixton, Warrington, were over the moon to learn the hated Warburton bridge tollbooth had been destroyed in a blaze. Tailbacks caused by the bridge, which links the two villages, were so bad children had to do their homework in cars as the waited in horrendous queues.

Why Children Aren't Behaving, And What You Can Do About It.

Childhood — and parenting — have radically changed in the past few decades, to the point where far more children today struggle to manage their behavior.

That's the argument Katherine Reynolds Lewis makes in her new parenting book, The Good News About Bad Behavior.

"We face a crisis of self-regulation," Lewis writes. And by "we," she means parents and teachers who struggle daily with difficult behavior from the children in their lives.

Lewis, a journalist, certified parent educator and mother of three, asks why so many kids today are having trouble managing their behavior and emotions.

Kick them outside and stop trying to be their friend is a start.

Just because a blonde was on FNC once upon a time, that doesn't make them Conservative. PBS has anointed the next Conservative media darling.

If only conservatives were kinder, gentler and more "with it." Who could stop us? Certainly not Democrats.

So the secret to conservative political success today is to act more like liberals, and they will like us more, too.

Anyone who has spent more than ten minutes with any Republican functionary attached to some aspiring Republican office-holder knows the pitch:

Having a set of wheels equals freedom. Or does it?

This week Mary Meeker from the investment firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers released her 2018 annual internet trends report. There were a lot of tidbits in there covering everything from what city is likely to be the next big tech hub to how people are shopping on the internet. It also tackled another interesting topic: where you’re better off using a ride-sharing service.

Need a little spicy condiment at your next picnic? Why not try some shidol chutney?

In the northeastern Bangladeshi region of Sylhet, shidol chutney is more than a mere condiment. It’s a cold remedy, a pervasive scent, and a spicy challenge.

Cooks begin with small, freshwater fish called puti maach. After the creatures have been sun-dried, shidol-makers line an earthenware pot with a mixture of mustard oil and oil from the fish’s guts. This vessel, called a motka, is then packed with the dried fish, sealed, and buried for several months.

Yummy.

If you don't succeed at first try, try, try again. Or kill the protesters.

Out of office for 17 years, Ortega’s Sandinistas managed to regain power in 2007, and since then they’re gotten up to their old tricks, albeit in a lower-key, “we’re no longer backed by Soviet money” way.

Lately, however, the mask has slipped, and the Sandinistas are killing protesters against their regime:

The protest on Wednesday capped six weeks of what has been described as a national rebellion against the government of President Daniel Ortega. The government has denied responsibility for any of the deaths and insists that it is the victim of a vast conspiracy….

“The demonstration was peaceful,” said Juan Sebastián Chamorro, a negotiator on the national dialogue committee. “There were children there. It was a peaceful manifestation that ended up with people shot in the head and killed deliberately by snipers.”

It is hard to believe, California has not restricted flamethrowers. Yet.

A California state bill that would have more heavily regulated the use of flamethrowers has now effectively fizzled out in a legislative committee.
In light of this development, there’s nothing to stop Boring Company customers in California from receiving the company's sold-out flamethrowers.

It appears later this year, December 10th, Libya will hold national elections. Extremists vs. Really Extremists.

The Militia Muddle

The hundreds of militias and private armies operating with little supervision throughout the country are being forced to choose sides. In the past many of them, especially the ones that were Islamic and from western Libya, unified behind what was left of the GNA in Tripoli in an effort to survive. That has not worked because more Libyans want a national government and many Islamic militias lost their most radical members to ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant), which is still trying to establish a base area in Libya. Less radical members joined AQIM (Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb) but most remained with more moderate groups like the Moslem Brotherhood. Thus the formerly Islamic radical militias gradually became more moderate and willing to compromise.

Moderate and willing to compromise? That sounds like wishful thinking.

The accordion. Musical instrument and storage container. Genius Award Winner.

A woman staying at a motel just off South Hosmer Street had seven pounds of methamphetamine stashed in an accordion when federal agents and Tacoma police arrested her Tuesday, Pierce County prosecutors allege.

The 30-year-old woman from Earlimart, California, was arraigned Wednesday in Superior Court on one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. Bail was set at $100,000.

Tourist town helped immensely by tourist is Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Jonathan Dobbs was visiting Alaska last fall from Wisconsin when he saw a sign.

He was in the little community of McCarthy, about 300 miles east of Anchorage in the Wrangell Mountains, with his girlfriend. They were leaving a bar and he saw a flyer outside. It showed a picture of McCarthy's only ambulance, with a rat's nest of wires pulled out of the center switch panel between the driver and passenger seats, and a plea to help find whoever had vandalized it and rendered it unusable.

Churchill could tell stories with the best of them. Plus, they both try and reinforce success, and loath socialists and phonies.

113 A narrative is emerging. David Brooks It appears that David Brooks has no clue what a Meritocracy really is. He makes the mistake of thinking that the current "elite" got there on merit - LOL - and, even better, that a "meritocracy" should be open to the idiots and incompetents - ROFLMAO. Ooooh, they are passing on intellectual advantages to their children!!! Maybe we're all reading Brooks wrong? Maybe he's just a comedian doing his shtick.

154 George Herbert Walker Bush was, at one point, the head of the CIA. In the 1950s, the CIA performed a series of mind-control experiments called MK-Ultra. One of their test subjects was Lee Harvey Oswald, who would go on to assassinate JFK.

Fast-forward to 1981. Herbert Walker is now the Vice-President; and, totally coincidentally, I'm sure, John Hinckley, Jr., a frickin' family friend of the Bushes, attempts to assassinate President Reagan. Had he been successful, Herbert Walker would've immediately become the President.

The media never told you that Hinckley was a Bush family friend, now, did they? No, they reported that he was just some crazy who was obsessed with Jodie Foster, and he was just mimicking the character played by loathesome chode Robert DiNero in the movie Taxi Driver in order to impress her.

Knowing that Hinckley was a Bush family friend, I'm totally convinced that the Jodie Foster angle was absolute bullshit. He knew exactly what he was doing, IMO; he was trying to hand the Presidency to his friend.

166 116 from that dumb article in USA Today by the woman who is supposedly a Republican consultant: "Voters don't know the whys, whens and wheres of the huge Russia/Trump scandal, hence their impeachment reticence." At least she didn't call us deplorables. The establishment politicians just don't understand why we like Trump. They despise us and view voters as a necessary evil that needs to be brought to heel.

167 Considering the doors don't shut properly, Going 0-60 in 2 1/2 seconds you couldn't open the door if you wanted to you have to wait 3 years for one while he has your down payment and you have to carefully plan on charging on a long trip. Yeah it's worth something, not my admiration. Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at June 04, 2018 10:42 PM (3Pma+) He certainly overhyped the cars and production schedule but I'm not anti-electric car. If batteries can double in efficiency then they will be worth getting. At the current state of battery tech they are fun to have but not equal to a regular car, yet. Of course, the Jaguar XKE was the mo0st beautiful car ever to hit the road and drove like a demon but if anyone thought they were going to be able to drive it around on any given day or, even more drastic, take it on any long journey, they had another guess coming. But it was still one of the sweetest cars ever built and, if you had the money, worth owning and driving around - but, most certainly, not for long trips that you needed to be able to depend on the car for.

170 ... this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old. +++++++++ Good Lord, Churchill had a way with words. Solemn, inspirational, and guilt-tripping the ever-loving heck out America. This is one of the greatest speeches of all time IMO. Full speech from which that is excerpted (13 mins): https://youtu.be/1Okt_YrKPdw It is perhaps topped by the speech a few days later, which is often snipped from the end when quoted: the "Finest Hour" speech. This is a remarkable piece of oration. Rarely does one ever get to hear the stark military realities a country is facing and a frank discussion of the odds and the pain that is about to come, and a call to stand against the tide that is rising against it. This speech also contains what I think is one of the most haunting lines uttered in modern history: "What General Weygand called the battle of France is over. I expect that the battle of Britain is about to begin." Full speech (30 minutes): https://youtu.be/jB5wZtV1MWM

My job was to take those incomplete loan files that had already been closed, and track down the missing paperwork to get the files properly shored up.

That was actually the most satisfying job I'd ever held, before I ended up where I am now.

315 Certainly what the FAA does with ATC has an immediate affect on safety but what the regulatory machinery does has a larger long term effect on safety. Around the turn of the century I had a job where every FAA edict crossed my desk since we were tasked with redesigning the products as required for compliance. There was a good solid 18 month period there were EVERY SINGLE NEW FAA REGULATION reduced safety. The congressionally mandated comment period is a joke. Once the bureaucrats have decided to take action X no amount of industry input regarding the danger of X will dissuade them from mandating it. As I always say: Aviation is safe, in spite of the FAA.

330 Didn't James Joyce write an entire 2,000-page novel that was entirely just one mindbendingly long run-on sentence?" - I was watching Unsolved Mysteries (don't judge me!) and a segment was on about Patience Worth. Patience Worth was allegedly a Puritan or other early pilgrim who became a spirit and, in 1912, contacted Pearl Lenore Pollard, a high school drop out, by means of a Ouija board and proceeded to write many novels and poems through Pearl in a style and with knowledge that Pearl could not have had. So I bought one of her novels, The Sorry Tale, of which I have read only the first chapter. It is a story of the time of Christ written in a King James Bible style. The main character is religious Mary who was sold into slavery to a Roman when her father could not pay his debts. She is trying to convert her master who is in love with her and wants to make whoopie which she cannot abide. I find the Elizabethan style beautiful but YMMV. One thing that is similar to the KJV and that I believe is consistent with Elizabethan writing generally is the tendency to start sentences with "And" creating, in effect, a huge run on sentence.

365 @ kalneva. Please do NOT give your nephew any such thing as a Leatherman to take with him to Boot. It'll be confiscated, faster than he can blink. That'll be his graduation PRESENT, if you will. You'll learn what his unit I.D. is from his correspondence. Get it engraved with his Basic Training Unit I.D., with suitable dates as well. For his "going away" present? Take him to the Office Despot store, and have him try the various "slightly better than basic Bic" ballpoint pens. Make sure his is retractable. Get blue and black refills for it. Basic will want one or the other, but not both. He can quickly adapt his with the refills, and discard the rest. A good, comfortable writing instrument will be a great help to him. There's a lot of taking of notes and taking of tests, in Basic, you see. And they won't take it away from him as contraband. If he loses his, or it gets broken, you can easily mail him a replacement. There's very little else you can send with him to basic, that they won't take away from him in the process. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX

373 Here's my take on what went wrong with "Solo": As has been widely reported, the film's original directors were going for a funnier, more improv-y take. And looking now at the finished product, it seems obvious that this was what it was always supposed to be, and more importantly, IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN OTHERWISE. Most of the scenes look as if they were constructed from the start with the primary purpose of giving the actors a lot of room to fuck around and come up with interesting bits. But then Kathleen Kennedy comes along and ejects the original directors and brings in Ron Howard, and he takes the original story and mainly directs it straight. Except most of the scenes were never intended to be played straight - when played straight, they come across as boring and flat and kind of stupid. Even worse, the cast is all wrong for a mostly-straight movie. Alden Ehrenreich in particular is all wrong for this. It's not that he's a bad Han Solo - but he's bad for THIS Han Solo, who's supposed to be more of a serious romantic lead. Go watch his scenes in the Coen Brothers' "Hail, Caesar!" to get an idea of a Han Solo that would have played more to his strengths. Imagine if halfway through the making of "Anchorman," they'd decided to change it from a broad comedy to a more mellow, low-key comedy about the news business, like "Broadcast News." But then they kept the exact same cast and tried to have them do the same script, but now in a more serious vein. That, I think, is what happened with "Solo." So like I said in an earlier thread: It comes down not to SJW madness, but to plain bad filmmaking, and bad filmmaking which can clearly and unambiguously be laid at the feet of the producers. When Kennedy realized the original team wasn't the movie she or the studio wanted, they should have just bitten the bullet and let them finish, because there was no way the concept could have been reshaped to fit their preferred vision without rewriting the whole script and recasting the whole movie. Certain choices made very early on in the process (by the PRODUCER) determined a certain movie which could never be transformed into another sort of movie without fatally damaging it. That's my semi-educated guess, anyway.

379 Ex-liberal, that's a good point. A Han Solo movie is supposed to be fun. If someone wanted to do a comedy Han Solo that was fun and funny, I'd watch it. I could then decide for myself if this was "canon" or if I wanted to keep the darker vision of AC Crispin's Paradise Snare. Or if I could keep both of them. Sometimes an origin story can be multiple-choice, especially for tricksters. Read (don't see) also, The Killing Joke.

425 kalneva: You might give your nephew a roll of duct tape ... the quality stuff, not imitation, and perhaps a roll of clear packing tape. Add shower sandals, 4 or so Chapsticks, 2 bottles of spray-on SPF-50 sunblock (Walmart FTW), a TOENAIL clipper (the one that looks like an overgrown fingernail clipper, NOT the one that looks like a set of diagonal cutters) and a jar of Vicks Vap-o-Rub. I've found that when I start to have foot problems, like excessive callouses, or blisters, filing down the callous, then putting a 2" section of duct tape over the area will get me through the next 12 hours. Toenail care is a big deal, and the large TOENAIL clippers help tremendously. They work extremely well on fingernails. I use only this size. Shower sandals help prevent athlete's foot, and if you ever get the grade that cracks your foot over-night, a thin coating of Vicks Vap-o-Rub usually remedies the problem overnight. Chapstick and SPF 50 (or better) spray-on sunblock can prevent a lot of misery.

great list, and well meant, but most, if not all, of what you listed would likely be seized by his drill sgts.

shower shoes they will make him purchase at the PX, the various meds, etc, will be taken away for a variety or arguments, "you might try to get high, use it to hide contraband, attempt suicide with it" etc...

even the duct tape will likely be seen as contraband.

if they give him a list, take ONLY what is on the list, and nothing more. Basic is beyond highly regulated, and no deviations are allowed.

435 "but most, if not all, of what you listed would likely be seized by his drill sgts." Yes, that's possible for the duct tape, sun block & Vicks. But they're cheap enough, so it might be worth the risk. Toenail clippers and Chapstick seem to me to fall into the realm of toothbrush & toothpaste, safety razor & shaving cream, and soap & shampoo. Shower sandals: If you have them, and have to buy another pair ... ok. I re-learned this lesson at my gym. If all of these items are in a cheap dopp kit, they might all pass. I found, when I was in, very many years ago, that they are quite useful and saved me some misery (or would have, if I'd had them the first time).

they don't want you to have $$$ lying around for people to steal.  back then it was all about money orders.

not sure what they do these days. best thing to do is talk to the recruiter and see what is, and, more importantly, is NOT allowed.

otherwise, you're just throwing money away, and even, potentially, causing grief for the recruit, who might be suspected of all sorts of stupid shit by the lifers, because of well meaning relatives sending what is seen as "contraband".

521 Damn, it is cold outside. 43 degrees and a cold north wind blowing making it feel colder. Damn snow plow left a line of rocks in my yard. Just my yard, not either side of me. High enough the lawn mower can't get over it. Deep enough it is killing the grass. So I finally got mad and went out to rake effin rocks. I'm told old for this. When I was a kid, there was an old guy, don't know how old, but he looked ninety who lived just down the road from us; skinny and frail, but he was out by the side of the road raking rocks out of his yard exactly like I just did. He was leaning on the rake when I went by and I thought to my self, "That will be me one day." That last time I went by that place there had been a fire, and the old guy didn't live there anymore.
