Mitt Romney Threatens America: If Jeb Doesn't Run, I Will!
— Ace

Actually this is only according to a "source" of CBSNews' Bob Schieffer, for whatever that counts for.

“I have a source that told me that if Jeb Bush decides not to run, that Mitt Romney may actually try it again,” Schieffer said...

I like Romney, as a person, probably more than most readers do (and definitely more than some cobloggers do!).

But... eh... I dunno.

I don't like this idea of running as the Alternate Jeb Bush.

4 He will be a strong candidate because of the marked contrast between him and Obama. People have already done the comparison, and many will admit that they were wrong.

But yeah....Compassionate Conservatism with the Kung-Fu Grip is not what we need now.

Rick Wilson has more knowledge of FL politicing than all of us put together.

I'll defer to his judgement on this.

My opinion? Jeb's wife is shy and he is very protective of her. No way he runs.

Going to be Walker, Jindal, Perry, Paul and maybe Pence in the primaries.

My money is on Jindal.

Posted by: davidt at April 28, 2014 02:03 PM (PAplM)

38 I kind of like the idea of Romney running again. 1) He's already been through the wringer once, so he knows what to expect and we know all the attacks that they will use. 2) He knows that the consultants who advised him last time were wrong, which hopefully means that he'll take a different approach this time. If anyone can realistically look at what happened and critically evaluate what they did wrong, it would be him. 3) He's a known quantity for voters, and they know that he was correct in a lot of his predictions. Hopefully some of those voters are experiencing buyers remorse over Obama and are more likely to look favorably on him, especially in light of 1 and 2 above. Obviously he has several major drawbacks, but I do think that the way we cycle through fresh meat every election leaves the power with the DC consulting class and the big-money donors who have networks already in place. A candidate coming even from the Senate or a governorship has to rely on those people to help provide the organization and funding, which in turn leaves the candidate at their mercy.

77 "Perry has looked and sounded good in the interviews that I've heard plus he has a great record to run on in TX."

The fundamental Perry problem is that he displayed a horrible lack of good judgment last time round, by proceeding into the primary debates while impaired.

There he was, totally stoned out of his gourd on pain pills, and didn't stop to say to himself, "Geez, I am wasted. High as a kite. I really shouldn't be doing this right now."

Instead he plowed ahead and made a meandering fool out of himself.

Now you can put this down to a guy who was not in his right mind failing to realize that he was not in his right mind. Sure, that happens.

But, critically, his hand-selected campaign manager and aides, who were not themselves trashed on pain pills, didn't have the brains to warn the boss that he was about to make a meandering fool out of himself, and keep him off that stage.

Indicating a poor job of hiring on Perry's part. Campaign pros exist to make sure the ship stays off the rocks in bad weather. Or if the captain is on drugs.

No, if there's going to be a Texan in the race for 2016, it's Ted Cruz.

This is the problem with people who believe that they "have to give back to society". No, you dont have to. You are not indispensable. Please dont matyr yourself.

111 I'd be all for this if last time Romney had fought his hardest all through the campaign- instead of folding like a pee-soaked sheet of toilet paper. But, after the 1st debate when he'd trounced Oblahblah, that's exactly what he did. No. Thank. You. Romney had his chance but had neither the manliness nor the patriotism to fight for his country. I really like Ted Cruz. I do.

But he wasn't born here.

Is it too much to ask to have a President who was born here?

I'm not ready to throw that requirement out the window altogether.

It doesn't matter if he is "technically, legally" eligible.

If we elect a guy who wasn't born here...it opens the door to anyone who wasn't born here.

118 This is the problem with people who believe that they "have to give back to society". I hate that phrase. It implies that anyone who earns money has done something wrong. Anyone who is wealthy then has some sort of debt to the public that can only be repaid through charity work. It's piffle. Some guy that owns a farm producing oranges exchanges oranges for money. The customer has received what they paid for. If the customer is unhappy with the exchange, they are free to patronize another source. The debt is settled on delivery of the goods and the payment. Society at large has no interest in the matter once taxes are paid.

131 So I posted the other day about Lamar Alexander's official Republican response to Obama. In which Lamar invited us to imagine a world where federal monoliths like the IRS, FDA and Labor Department "enable" us to "achieve" things.

I said to myself, "Jesus H. Christ on a pogo stick. This sounds amazingly like Al Gore's big push for 'reinventing government' in the 1990s. Is this what we've come to?"

Then I said, "It also sounds a whole lot like goddamned Newt Gingrich."

Well, as I related, it turns out Lamar ripped off this malarkey about federal agencies "enabling" we peons from Gingrich's new book. And Gingrich in turn appropriated that brilliant idea from Tim O'Reilly.

I went looking for the original Tim O'Reilly piece, and I found this:

http://radar.oreilly.com/2008/10/why-i-support-barack-obama.html

A more slobbering piece of tongue bath of Barack Obama you will seldom find. It's practically as bad as the Mark Morford piece about "the Lightworker".

So, ladies and gentlemen, this is what the modern GOP have come to. Their big ideas about how to govern are ripping off a stale piece of Obama fanboi cultist idol worship from six years ago, warming it up in the microwave, and then stealing it from one another.

Just like the racist Clipper's owner, it's something to distract the masses from paying attention to Obama's many failings -- foreign and domestic -- as we gear up for the midterm elections. The Romney-may-run-in-2016 one has the added bonus of getting people on the right -- the same Einsteins who said that "reelecting Obama would be the best thing for conservatism" in 2012 -- all riled up and vowing to not even *vote* in the midterms for the GOP candidate. 'Cause cutting of their noses to spite their faces is their specialty.

191 Romney did not do the groundwork for running for president before the 2008 campaign nor did he do it prior to the 2012 campaign.

You can't start a few months before the election; you need to start years before the election. You have to generate cultural momentum above and beyond the media's influence and define yourself.

The GOP's brand is worthless and has been for a while. Just showing up on  TV in April of an election year guarantees that the media/Left will freeze and polarize you before the primaries. You need to have an identity outside of that forum that you've cultivated years prior.

And, no, no one on the Right is close to achieving that right now.

I have to say, I don't ever really want to see the guy in public again, no disrespect, I think he'd probably have a made a competent president in light of the circumstances we are now in, I don't think he'd have repealed Obamacare, but everything else we'd be in better shape.

Despite initial objections, I'm willing to play wait and see. Depending on the calvacade of losers that enter the race on our side, and what the democrats do, he might be a good sacrificial lamb.

Cruz has not basically come out for open borders like Walker has.

I've seen Walker say several times that anyone who wants to come to this country and work should be able to do so.

Cruz actually polls about the same as the other GOP candidates, despite having had much worse press.  The most recent Marist poll actually has him doing better vs. Hillary than Bush and Rubio, and only one point worse than Paul. Also, other than Jindal, who has no chance, he's the only candidate that could at least partially counter Hillary's "historic" card.

292 @253 Incorrect. Sort of. Prez and VP can be from the same state, but that state's electors couldn't vote for both. Snopes gives a very good rundown and the Wiki VP article has the explanation. This came up with Bush/ Cheney because Cheney was a TX resident and working at Haliburton at the time. To solve it, Cheney moved back to WY (he maintained his house there to whole time, so it wasn't a big deal).

Hands down the most intelligent post in this cesspool of a thread that mirrors what's wrong with populist conservatism. Half the the chosen candidates mentioned in this thread stand no chance what-so-ever. Sarah Palin will never amount to anything; Ben Carson is a fantastic neurosurgeon. Of the more realistic choices, Ted Cruz is intelligent and fights, but will never get to 50.1%. Marco Rubio is interesting from a demographic stand-point in a potential match-up vis-a-vis a Clinton; Rand Paul is ideologically closest to me and actually building a nice campaign hierarchy but hard to simulate how he'd fair nationally. Rick Perry has no shot, sorry man, you don't recover from intellectual self-inflicted wounds. Ask Sarah. Romney has, and will continue, to be mentioned because he's a serious man in a serious time with a serious resume in the private sector as well as government. None of the other candidates, sans Bush, have a sense of gravitas or natural role-fitting. My hunch is Romney's play is to lay low, but ever present and let the field develop. He either emerges as the elder to stabilize the platform of a new player who wins the primary with a lesser record (Rubio, Ryan, Paul) as VP. In this way a Romney Vice-Presidency can counter-act the Clinton attack against inexperience; paralleling what Biden did, sans the stupidity of Joe. Or in the more unlikely scenario, emerges very late if the republican field attacks each other to shreads (which they'll likely do as this party is filled with idiots, as exemplified by the people in this thread who call themselves conservatives and proudly admit they didn't vote in 2012).

372 Teri, what's stupid to me is how we -- as conservatives -- berate Obama for his pop-star qualities and pandering to the masses. Then turn around and want the same thing delivered to us, just packaged in our own version of the ideal -- where as Obama's disciples want bike helmets, ebonics, hand-outs, slow-jams and mom-jeans, you desire the persona of 'unpolished suburban power-mom goes to Washington'. Nevermind she never picked up Federalist 51. And the sad part is after 2009, she could have went home and studied her cute ass off on foreign policy, domestic issues, debating and articulation skills. Then emerged in 2012 or 2014 as a huge player. But, as I contend, why should she? The base doesn't desire that. You sure as shit don't. Douchey co-blogger Drew never did, oh, he'll profess to be a Reagan follower (the guy who spent the '60s and '70s building strong intellectual arguments against communism abroad and socialism at home), but when it comes time to pick between supporting Romney, whose book underlining conservative positions from Russian and Chinese geopolitics (that's more detailed than current Obama policy!) to contemporary education reform based on data from McKinsey/UMichigan/etc, to tax reform.... he'd rather pick the guy from Texas who can't remember which three departments he'd entirely eliminate. And then, to this day, never unite behind him. Our base is just as bad as Obama's. We just want to be entertained, want the dopamine rush; as long as we're rotting our brain on our channel.

373 Jindal is a dyed-in-the-wool conservative but he isn't a great manager. I say this as a Louisianian....he has filled his cabinet posts and government with the right wing equivalent of Obama's teeny-bopper know-nothings. He is ideological but not practical, and the staffers are rude, crude and not terribly bright, and they had/have no experience in working through governmental issues. Besides, I don't think he has a bit of charisma and blacks here hate him. So it can't be Jindal.

374 I give Shieffer's story about the same consideration as every flotsam-chasing CNN story. But if it were true, well, Romney is legendary at fixing financially troubled organizations of every kind, and we could really use that kind of talent. Not that he's perfect in every way, but we could do worse.

375 Romney is too stiff.  He could have slaughter 0bama in debates, hearts and minds had he been less bookish, stilted, well-trimmed etc.

Note to Mitt staff:  You do NOT starch and iron a crease the cuffs in  a rolled up shirt in a heavy industry photo op. You do NOT make a candidate's hair immovable in the firm October wind of an Eastern Seaboard shipyard shot.

Now, had Mitt taken Perry's meds when he was campaigning, that might have actually really helped.

376 You know the odd thing? Mitt Romney campaigned against Ocare with more confidence than Rand Paul is currently showing. Bizarro.

I came to really like Mitt in 2012 -- and I believe he won, but "lost" due to voter fraud and wusses in his campaign (remember he had 4 jets fueled up and ready to go to swing states to contest? But he was told by someone not to bother).

He was a great candidate up til Candy Crowley scared the mud out of him. He was doing really well before that, but it was not good to back down from Candy.

I don't want him to run again simply because I want Cruz. But Mitt's better than Jeb or Christie, that's for sure.

Mitt did win the 1st debate. Everyone agreed. He came out gangbusters. Next debate was a different story because he let Candy skeer him.

378 One more thing: if Mitt still campaigns on the promise that he will undo Ocare on his  "first day in office" like he did in '12 -- he's already a better candidate than Rand.
