42 We are such pussies today. The hardest work any of this types ever did is nothing compared to what it used to be like. It was get up at the crack of down and toil until dark. If you didn't, you didn't eat.

Take any of my grandmothers. Both were born in the 1890s, and they knew what it was like was before modern technological convenience. Either one of them could, whip up a full meal from basically scratch for 6 people or so with a moment's notice.

I'm old enough to remember the stories, but never had to experience it. No one much today has even heard of it.

I'm just trying to imagine what either of my grandmothers would've thought of modern feminism and what they claim is "hard" for them.

82 Even my parents picked cotton by hand as children. These lefties would be probably deem it child abuse. But no, it was what was required. As a girl, my mother jumped in a hay wagon where her brother had left a pitchfork turned up and two tines went through her foot.  She remembers my grandmother raking both her and my uncle out, and cleaning the wound with something that burned terribly. She wrapped it up, and my mother was back to work. They were worried it would get infected, but it didn't.

They didn't take her to the doctor, modern people would wonder? Well, there wasn't a doctor close by, and he wouldn't have done anything different than my grandmother did.

110 @42, I've lived without electricity for about 8 years (living in the burbs now, but I do remember.) And I have done a lot of physical labor, picked apples, worked in fruit packing sheds, etc. I can tell you that having electricity is a huge time saver. So much of the hard work people used to do can be done in minutes with electricity. It really is marvelous stuff. Used to know an old timer that worked in the wheat fields in the Palouse, back in the 20s when he was out of high school.. He broke his ankle. He laced his boot up tighter and kept working. It was what people expected of you.

117 my Dad's father died when he was 18. he did farm chores and then went into town because he worked 2nd shift in a factory. he had to do it - he had a mother and 2 little sisters to support. Not that they were siting around on their asses either. My father used to say, with awe, that his sister Mary was the strongest woman he ever saw - she could pick up bales of hay and toss them on the back of a truck all morning long. But yet she was a pretty girl, sturdy, but pretty. They would laugh at our idea of work. Hell, so would most people throughout history.

143 Reminds me of an illustration our pastor used last Sunday in his sermon.  He had a pumpkin on his little table he uses, with the top carved off.  He opened up the top of the pumpkin and scooped out some of the goop inside.  He said one of the first things Christians have to do when they want to be carved into God's image is to let God scoop out the insides.  He labeled the goop inside as "Entitlements".   We aren't "entitled" to anything.  Everything we have is a gift of God to us.  We are not "entitled".  We are "thankful".

Anyway.  I thought it was a good way of looking at things.  Thus endeth the lesson.

150 The Left's only real economic plan, ever.

1. Attain absolute political and informational power. Maintain at all costs.

2. Promise to party 1 an entitled future of prosperity without effort.

3. Increasingly lay taxes upon party 2 in order to get money to support party 1.

4. When party 2 can or will no longer pay, use force of government to force compliance or jail them.

5. When Step 4 fails and party 1 is angered at its loss of prosperity, blame party 2.

6. When Step 5 fails, kill off party 1. Replace with a new party 1 if possible and treat the first party 1 as you did party 2.

7. When Step 6 fails, force all parties to work to support the real party 1 the whole time: you.

8. Maintain at all costs.

152 The excess men is problematic, I remember reading something about the male to female ratio and when it gets above a certain value, things go sideways.

But the main thing is the working age cohort in China is now shrinking, which is a worldwide trend. Some economist wrote a piece about this, saying the world experienced a one-off labor glut due to a simultaneous baby boom and increasing life expectancy.

Labor's share of GDP was ever decreasing, and this dynamic created a little paradigm that is now breaking.  It's why the elites are pushing for open borders and MOAR immigration.

Also, the "dependency ratio", the ratio of those not in the workforce to those who are is on the upswing worldwide as well, after decades of decline.

This is why China had to end the one-child policy.  And this is what is concerning to the financial elite.
