He literally sleeps with his best friends daughter who, and I can't really remember, is likely underage to boot. HBO played that movie on a constant rotation and Michelle Johnson is a feast for the eyes. Demi Moore shows up as well as her friend. In one scene they're both topless. Favorite 1980s Caine movie is Educating Rita. Might be my favorite Michael Caine film of all time.

Posted by: kallisto at February 28, 2018 07:48 AM (rpZ5G)

68 Seriously, I once saw an hour-long "master class" in acting by Michael Caine in which he taught people who already thought they were good actors how to REALLY act. The entire lesson was about acting with your eyes only. One assignment, performed live on stage, was to act "scared." All these other actors came on stage and did this hammy overacting of gasping and cringing and screaming and running around. Then Michael Caine, watching from the sidelines, said, basically, "No, you flippin' idiots! THIS is how to act scared!" And he proceeded to sit in a chair completely unmoving, stock still, just occasionally flicking his eyes nervously to the left, each time with growing anxiety, as beads of sweat broke out on his forehead. And he was correct: Just watching him made me feel afraid, whereas watching to other actors just made me aware of their acting. Seeing this video convinced me that Michael Caine was a genius at acting.

140 I had a thought last night about culture and I want to toss it out here for the Horde to bat around a bit. Suppose that there are two cultures: an overculture and an underculture. The oversulture is the stuff of Hollywood, the media, the academics - all of the groups with the big megaphones and institutions. They drive a lot of things on the surface, make laws and proclamations. By all appearances it is the only culture of the land, through and through, except for regionalisms like funny accents and local foods. The underculture isn't reported very much. It is not represented in the institutions, and if those with the big megaphones even notice it all they do is insult it. The underculture, however, persists. It is not a static thing, it changes over time, but it contains the attitudes and character of the people. Because it is so widespread amongst so many, it runs very deep and very quiet. And being deep and quiet the underculture persists with far more tenacity than anyone - whether of the overculture or of the underculture - can actually appreciate. The only way to eradicate it is to eradicate the carriers, the people. That understanding, only dimly perceived by some at this time, is starting to really drive events. Thoughts? Witticisms? Trenchant Commentary?

His stage name was inspired by spotting a theater marquee for The Caine Mutiny. He hates high taxes. Supported Maggie Thatcher, but also Tony Blair, but now is a Tory again. Married to his current spouse for 45 years. Some quotes: "Be like a duck, my mother used to tell me. Remain calm on the surface and paddle like hell underneath." "I'm the original bourgeois nightmare - a Cockney with intelligence and a million dollars." "The best research [for playing a drunk] is being a British actor for 20 years." "Do I believe in God? Yes I do. When you've had a life like mine, you have to." "It was a gentler time when I was young. There were vicious gangsters but they were professional gangsters. They chose who they hit and what they robbed. But the drug addicts today have to kill anybody - it doesn't matter who - to get the money, so you get this incredible random violence. When I was young you fought the guy in the next street. But it wasn't so vicious then. We fought with our fists. Now they fight with knives and guns." "I stayed in Britain, but they kept putting the tax up, so I'd do any old thing every now and then to pay the tax, that was my tax exile money. I realised that's not a socialist country, it's a communist country without a dictator, so I left and I was never going to come back. Maggie Thatcher (Margaret Thatcher) came in and put the taxes back down and in the end, you know, you don't mind paying tax. What am I going to do? Not pay tax and drive around in a Rolls Royce, with cripples begging on the street like you see in some countries?" Could be a moron.

202 191 #143. The first two Harry Palmer (what a name) were good but Billion Dollar Brain was very silly. He made a couple more in the 90s that were direct to video and pretty forgettable Posted by: TheQuietMan at February 28, 2018 01:06 PM (OLCnA)
No disagreement about the quality of the Palmer movies, they went downhill. I just thought his spy character was so much more believable than Mr. Bond. The only good thing in Billion Dollar Brain was Francoise Dorleac's figure. Sadly, she died in a car accident soon after before she could go on to further stardom. She was even hotter than her sister, Catherine (Dorleac) Deneuve.

203 Uncharted territory, racist. That's never happened before in the history of anything. I think it will work out fine, and I'm returning to my NYT crossword puzzle. Say, anyone know a word for an affluent Russian peasant? Five letters. Something like K_L_K it looks like.{/I] It is interesting there is nothing on the BBC website about the expropriation story. The Daily Mail story notes in passing that "land reform" in "neighboring Zimbabwe" was "botched."

Where in the FiretrUCK is Sessions?

All of this Mueller "work" is the investigation that will be used by the new 2019 House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, to Impeach DJT.

If Mueller was indicted in his coverup of the Uranium One - Clinton Foundation money laundering and influence peddling in 2009-2011, this would end.

I try not to imagine the depth and breath of the riots by average Joe and Jane America if this crap were to actually happen.

Do the math, only 2% to 5% of teachers - and that includes staff, administration, janitors, coaches - would have to carry in order for this to be successful and effective.    No teacher that does not want to carry would have to.

Posted by: ScoggDog at February 28, 2018 01:29 PM (fiGNd) I'm upper end Gen X and this is what I've been saying for years. Gen X are the kids the older Boomer had. Gen Y aka the Millenials are the kids the younger Boomers wanted. It should be the Boomer raised Gen X and Gen X raised the Millenials but due to women pushing having children until their 30s, it's Boomers raised Millenials and Gen X is raising Gen Y. It's very interesting. Also I do believe that Gen Y feels about Millenials the way Gen X feels about the Boomer, namely, dude, you fucked everything up. Shut up and go away.

350 Wasn't it Dickhead's Sporting Goods that halted sales of AR15s after the Sandy Hook murders, even refusing to complete sales started weeks before? The CEO is the son of the founder. He lets himself be shamed and ordered about by a little punk high school political operative. I wonder if he's seen the video of the punk and the other members of his HS drama club backstage at the Ellen Degeneres show, yucking it up at their new found fame, without a care in the world. Probably not.

In the Obama gun grab of 2012, Dicks quit selling AR 15's back then, too.

So Dick's is just a Bag of Dicks.

372 315 My observation- Gen Z thinks Millennials are a bunch of pussies. I quite agree. Posted by: Puddin Head at February 28, 2018 01:26 PM (2LelM) So ... which Generation raised what ? I remember getting out of college and not being able to stand working with most Baby Boomers. Their thing was all about Time Served ... nothing much about what you actually did. I'm Gen X ... I think. Did Gen X raise Gen Z ? Are Millenials the kids of the Boomers ? ------------------ It's gotten confusing with subdivisions in cohorts. Cohorts were normally grouped in twenty year sticks. Boomers were 1946 to 1965 in birth years. Some have called them Boomer I and Boomer II, recognizing two different coming of age landscapes economically and culturally. But generally Boomer means 1946-1965 birth years. Gen x = 1966 to 1974 birth years Gen y = 1974 to 1994 Gen z = 1995 to 2012 Millennials are generally understood to be Gen X and Gen Y. Gen Z begins a new cohort. To be honest, I've never found a definitive source for these terms that everyone agrees to. Most everyone recognizes Boomers.

376 I would say, for the most part, Gen X kids were in large part raised by "Silent Generation" (to young for WW2, too old to worry about the Vietnam draft) parents. Now middle aged and often caring for their now decrepit Silent parents. i should know. :-( Millennials, or Gen Y? Boomer birthed brats, also the spawn of Generation X who got knocked up too early. Generation Z? Starting to unfold now.

He mathematically determined the ratio of highly armed bait ships to transports needed to make piracy unprofitable. Pretty much the same thing.
